The Lancia Flaminia Makes a Ferrari from the Same Era Seem Crude

  • The flagship of Lancia's three model line during one of their greatest periods in time, the Flaminia is a technological tour de force which was built to the company's famously high standards. Employing a V6 mated to a four-speed rear-mounted transaxle, de Dion suspension, and disc brakes all around, it was chock full of innovative features, but the best part of the car is the way it feels to drive it. In this video, Derek Tam-Scott drives a wonderfully sorted 2.8 liter Pininfarina-bodied Flaminia Coupe and extols the virtues of pre-Fiat Lancia, explaining where it fit into the Italian car hierarchy and the sort of buyers who love them.

The Fulvia was the car that made me fell in love with Lancia. The Lancias from the 50s and 60s are so interesting and gorgeous. To me the Aurelias and the Flaminias were among the best cars of that time. Now i am a happy owner of a 68 Fulvia coupe, not a 1.6 as the one from my childhood because they skyrocketed in value, but maybe one day. I really hope to see more from you about all the great Lancias from the past. Thank you for sharing your experience.

How attainable would a 50-60s Lancia be? I’m starting to like the idea of owning a vintage car one day. I’ve gotten tired of fast and powerful cars. This is a completely different side of automotive history/industry.

I really enjoyed this video. The new format is refreshing, but I do also miss the relaxed nature of Derek's voiceovers. Maybe some combination of both, where Derek covers some of the more technical aspects and driving impressions while driving but does the metaphorical and historical discussions on the car with B-roll footage and voiceover?
Edit: By the way, if you are as in love with the opening song as I am, it is "Lama House - Where Legends Dwell."

Only Hyphen could say Ferraris and Alfas feel "cheap and crappy" and still make me stand up and take notice.
Very elegant but it is one car that's very difficult to contextualize. Makes me feel like I should look into Lancia more.

Alfa made little lovely monsters, my mom had a black Giulietta Sprint (very popular with the ladies back then) . my first was a Giulia 1600 Spider I series. Back then they came in black, red or white. Don't believe what they say, changing gears was a dream and it could brake. Lancia and Maserati had the metallic paint as an optional.

@@lorenzomagazzeni5425 Well, I agree. We still own a 66 Duetto 1600. My rememberence of the car was that it was smooth, had a great transmission and rode like a dream, when I used to ride it regularly fourty years ago. As my father did not let anone else drive it for decades, the riding experience got glorified in my mind. Maybe it was the fact that I was young, strong and I had several beautiful young ladies beside me when I drove the car over the Swiss mountains.
Well, l used to drive Army trucks of the Fifties without power steering and with unsynchronized transmission back in the day. Of course the Alfa Romeo was very comfortable compared to those monsters.
Now the Spider is mine, I drove it again. As I am an old man now I was surprised how tough the ride is: The steering is hard, the brakes even harder and very inefficient. It is still fun to drive it. But after many hours of riding in the car my whole body was aching. I remember it having a strong, fast reving engine. But after all the cars I drove over the last 45 years I must say: It is mainly fun because it is NOT very fast and not very smooth at all. The fun lies in the beauty and nostalgia of the vehicle.
The Giulietta Spring was also popular with men. It was a lovely car: Inside and out. My Grandma used to drive several Giulias in the Sixties and early Seventies. It my book it was a good car but not very beautiful at all. The Alfa Romeo GT and GTV of this aera were very, very beautiful though.

I LOVE the classic GT cars of the late Fifties and Sixties! Specially Italian ones.
I come from an Alfa Romeo family. Our Italian neighbours were Lancia fanatics. Nowadays after the downfall of Lancia I appreciate the brand even more.
As a teenager I was torn between a Lancia Fulvia and an Alfa Romeo GT. As I could not afford any of the two I drove FIATS.
But noone who did not experience classic vehicles built in Italy (or Detroit) from let us say 1957 to 1972 knows how great the driving experience of those beautiful cars is. You are actually driving and not being driven. Those cars still had a soul. And few people can believe that each vehicle could behave slightly differently from another one of the same year and model.
Nowadays cars are soulless and are more computers than vehicles.
I think as you do that the Flaminia together with the Maseratis of the same vintage were the best quality ride you could get from BELLA ITALIA.

What a classy classic coupe. From an era when people really understood what good taste was; elegant and simple, well-crafted, good looking but discrete and engaging but without sacrificing comfort. Is like the perfect blend of the things that make a car interesting. I’m trying to think of the modern equivalent of this car but I can’t come up with anything because everything is too flashy these days.

This is an amazing video. Mr. Underwear on the Runway Tam Scott has outdone himself here. This car is basically like a Rolls Royce phantom DHC, but maybe even more unique and rich feeling. I am surprised that a relatively low compression, long stroke pushrod V6 can make such noises. It almost sounds Dino V6-like. From what I've heard, they don't even break that much if cared for in a proper way like the 100K dollar equivalent cars they were back in the early 60's. As a 16 year old, I have a passion for pre-FIAT lancia's, specifically the Fulvia and the B24 that is weirdly uncanny for ppl of my generation lol.

I've owned a Pf cupe like yours, but with Nardi heads and 3 Webers, as well as suspension and brake updates. Glorious car, and I kept it for more then 13 years. I also had a spyder and a berlina during that time...now that's a set that even hard-core Lancia enthusiasts find impressive. The Flaminias were beutifully built and engineered, but finding parts in the US could be tricky (I owned mine in the late-1960s through mid-1970s). I was able to do almost all my own work and realy developed an appreciation for the craftsmanship and quality of materials. While even my hot-rod coupe was not really much faster than an Alfa Veloce in a straight line, it was as fast as my 250 GTE Ferrari on any road with bends in it, and the Lancia had MUCH better road manners. Drive an old Ferrari fast and you arrived drained, but the Flaminia got you there nice and relaxed. GREAT road cars. I've always wondered what happened to the berlina; I've been told by someone who should know that there were only 6 of those officially imported into the USA.

Pininfarina designed a few cars in that era that share a lot of similar features. The Peugeot 404 and Fiat 1500 share quite a lot of the lines and trim with this. Suspension design straight out of Fifties Detroit - with semi-elliptic buggy springs in the rear - bodywork that looks like it was built by a 17-year-old in a hurry, all surrounding that magnificent engine. Whereas all parts of a Lancia were designed and made to their high standard of ingenuity. Except for the wacko sliding-pillar front suspension and the pushrod engine, their engineering is quite up-to-date today.

I hate Lancia, whenever i see a modern one a mixture of sadness and disgust comes upon me. It's criminal what fiat did with lancia and alfa for that matter.

Not true what he says about Alfa Romeo, total nonsense.
Look at an AR 2600 of that era !!!!!

At this point you have to ask yourself, why the interest in old European cars that were more than a decade behind their American counterpart? This car and many other European cars of this time period are essentially worthless to ANY American that knows car culture. This isn't even a performance car of its day.

A decade behind? American cars have always been mostly "chocolate boxes" or "bathtubs", as we usually call them. Putting a 3x bigger engine on a 4x heavier car is not behing "way ahead", its just shoddy and inefficient engineering, doesnt take much skill to do that.

Wow. I've never seen anyone claim that american cars were "ahead". At leasy no one who experienced both US and EU made cars of the same era.
And I wonder how do you want to claim that Lancia was behind US manufacturers when it was the company pushing innovations: first V4, first V6, first unibody monocoque chasis, first 5 gear transmission, first fully independent suspension...

@@fgsaramago You simply don't know automotive history. This car is laughable at best compared to the big three in this time period, and would be considered junk.

Do you know of any american car in 1957 that had disc brakes, let alone as standard equipment?

The title of the video is accurate. Lancia a premier Italian brand made luxury cars with great performance in any decade of its existence until the 1980s , Ferrari made SPARTAN SPORT CARS , and occasionally made a sedate 4 seater sometimes even with 4 doors that attempted to be LUXURY cars . Most often up to present with the exception of engine and drive line Ferrari`s cabins look feel and are junky by comparison to Lancias especially vintage samples like the Flaminia.
