How a Man in His 20s Started a Rally Legacy - ISSIMI Drives

  • Called the Fanalone for its larger diameter inner headlights, the Lancia Fulvia 1600 HF is the car that started Lancia’s decades long rally-winning dynasty. When people say “make Lancia great again,” these are the cars they’re talking about. The Fulvia was not specifically designed to be a rally car, but to be fair, nor was any other car in the 1960s. At the time, rallying was an activity that people did in competition-prepared street cars and any competence a car had on the slippery stuff was a pleasant byproduct rather than an intentional design characteristic. The Fulvia excelled because of its unusual technical characteristics: front wheel drive, narrow angle V4, and well-reasoned suspension design. In this episode of ISSIMI Drives, Derek Tam-Scott travels to Monaco to drive the ultimate Fulvia, the 1600cc HF Fanalone, not far from the roads where these cars laid the groundwork for Lancia’s incredible subsequent successes with the Stratos, 037, Delta S4, and Integrale.

The niche, $30b industry of collectable and low-production cars has seen little innovation in the past several decades. It’s one that lacked transparency, dependent on traditional dealers, brokers, and auction houses with unnecessarily high fees.
We’re setting out to change that.
We believe our technological and operational excellence can decrease costs while increasing transparency into car quality, building trust between collectors. Give us a shot, and shop rare cars anywhere in the world from the comfort of your own home.

Totally agree. Derek sounds so much more natural doing live commentary. The voiceovers sound alot like staring a paper and reading a script in a very monotone way.

Nicely Done!!! You are exactly correct when you said you have to work at perfecting the proper driving technique to get the most out of the car and I love that. I just purchased a 1.3S and if I drive it correctly…wow!! The Fulvia is a beautifully challenging lovely car!!

Wonderful explanation of the Fulvia's steering! In a 1968 edition Sports Car World said the Fulvia (1.3 Rallye) had the "best steering on any production car in the world." Now someone has finally shed some light on it! Knocking it out of the park Derek and Issimi.

I had the pleasure of driving a standard 1.3S many, many years ago. It was just exquisite, the steering, the balance, the feedback....once you got in tune with the car it was just the best. Sadly was not in a position to buy at that time. Regretted ever since.
l have a car club mate who had a 1.6HF. One day he announced he sold it, I was shocked, but he explained he did so to buy an Integrale, so that was understandable. Saw him a few months ago where he informed me he had missed the Fulvia so much he purchased another HF....- lucky bugger

Wow, the sound is amazing! It actually has a very similar intake tone to my '98 Toyota Corolla Levin, with the 4A-GE 20v that has open ITBs. It's one of the reasons I went after that car. Now I'm m even more interested in the Fulvia than I already was!

@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo Well yes I am aware induction noise is very similar amongst carbed cars and fuel injected cars with ITBs. I can't comment on if Toyota based their early twin cam four cylinder engines off the Alfa units, but I can say that the 4A-GE 16v model (mine is not that, it's instead the later 20v model) is similar in design to the Cosworth BDA. However, it is not a copy.

The Stratos is a beautiful car in the way predators can be. Beautiful but at the same time threatening. The Fulvia is just beautiful. the Fulvia's styling is so close to the Alfa Romeo Giulia (am I spelling that right?) that they could be siblings (or any two 2020's crossovers) but it's just slightly better in every way. It's just so perfect from every angle.

Firstly, nice video with beautiful footage. Unfortunately, there are some inaccuracies about the Lancia Fulvia history and Fessia part in the racing program.
Lancia’s technical director Antonio Fessia was a “Pesenti” man ( Italian businessman Carlo Pesenti took control over Lancia in 1956). Fessia was against any kind of racing activities in the company and was also a very conservative guy for revolutionary technical solution. As was mentioned in the video, in the beginning the Fulvia was not a racing car at all. This coupe was developed as a small upper class vehicle for rich young guys or a family with small kids. It was also advertising as a car for ladies going shopping in the downtown. Its power train derived from the limousine (berlina) version and continuous the Lancia tradition of a narrow V4 engine. This engine was laydown for 45-degree angle to have a lower front bonnet of the vehicle. In the front it has an independent suspension with wishbones and a single leaf spring, on the rear they put an obsolete beam axle with a panhard rod and leaf springs. In the begging they tried some prototypes with independent suspension also at the rear, but the car was unstable. For the first series they put four wheel Dunlop disc brakes system which wasn’t the best solution, but was still better in comparisons with drums breaks on other vehicles. They also mounted a break limitator from the model rally 1.3S. With the second series of the coupe in 1970 the brakes were uprated with larger Girling calipers all round, a brake servo and a better mechanical break limitator for achieve batter braking balance when you put extra weight on the back of the car. They also improved other technical elements (electrical, cooling system, safety elements - Fulvia 3, etc.)
The man behind the racing success of the Fulvia was Cesare Fiorio, son of Sandro Fiorio, former chief of the public relations department of Lancia. Fiorio manage to convinced Lancia management to racing again after what happened in the 50’ with the Lancia racing program (D20, D23, D24, D50). Later on, he was even more successful with the models Lancia Stratos, 037, Delta S4, Delta integrale…etc. The engineer who developed the famous Fanalone engine, serial number 818.540…the one in the video…was Ercole Zaccone Mina. Fessia was so against about racing that Zaccone Mina had to design the engine during his free time (he had done much of it during the weekends). Of course, Fiorio push for it to beat the Porsche and Alpines on the rally track… Zaccone Mina also collaborate with the engineer Francesco De Virgilio, the father of the V6 in the Lancia Aurelia.
The Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF first series in the video is one of the last examples with a short gear stick. I presume it was a normal or “stradale” version not a “reparto corse” - racing model and was modified in a more tuned one with a lot of stuff that is not correct was the period (roll bar, seats, etc.). Unfortunately, there is no footage of the engine, but with the 45 carbs the car has to have 130 hp and above, with the total weight around 2000 lbs…it has to go pretty fast….the raparto corse version has 160 hp, differential lock, compression ratio 11.21, etc.
For the presenter in the video …Lancias are cars for connoisseurs…. medium.com/roadster-life/the-story-of-lancias-last-v4-engines-9773f198ff1
