Nice car. I didn’t even know it existed. As a finishing carpenter, the wooden accents caught my eye right away. It thought it looked pretty good, but when you said it was from Yamaha’s piano division, I knew it was something very special.
One fun story about the 2000GT is how it's central to a rivalry between Pete Brock and Carroll Shelby. BRE was supposed to get the contract to race these in SCCA against 911s and so forth, but Shelby flew to Tokyo and convinced Toyota brass to change horses mid-stream. First thing Brock heard about it was when the cars showed up at Shelby's garage. So, with some Datsun Roadsters he'd secured direct from Japan via a previous connection with Hino, Brock went looking to spoil Shelby's plans. The Roadsters ran in a different class, but they would slow up the 2000GTs on the racing line, while letting their rivals by. Toyota lost the SCCA championship, packed up, and didn't return to sportscar racing for ages. There's a green-and-yellow record car tribute at Toyota HQ, but it is actually one of these Shelby-SCCA cars repainted. The original crashed and burned.
Yes Rocky Auto. Although there are a number of replica 2000GT makers. The club president has a SCCA tribute that is a mix of Nissan GTR and F355 parts, plus a built 3.0L engine.
I remember watching 'You only live twice' as a boy and I was mesmerized by the 2000GT... The next week I went to my local library to learn all that I could about the car(yes I'm old)
This car has always been one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. Everyone has those fantasies of what they woulda drove back in the day, well, if I had the money, you're looking at it
And this is why I have a naturally aspirated 7MGE in my 1983 Supra mk2 instead of a JZ. The sound it makes is divine! Sounds exactly the same as a 2000GT with a decent exhaust.
Got to appreciate the partnership between Toyota and Yamaha in making otherworldly vehicles, especially at making engines for both this car and the Lexus LFA. Looking forward for this kind of partnership again in the future, though chances are unlikely if Toyota decides to go fully electric.
iirc, Yamaha said they will not make car engine again back in 2019 or 2020. At least they still partner with Toyota Group to develop a Hydrogen ICE engine.
Yamaha did NOT make the engines!!! It helped develop the heads and tuned the exhaust; the rest of the engines were completely created by Toyota. Stop spreading misinformation!
Btw, Yamaha also helped develop the heads for the 2jz, while Hitachi supplied the turbos. The rest of the engine was created by Toyota. I've read some people say, "The 2JZ was made by Yamaha..." LoL! 😂 I've also read some people claim the 2JZ was created by a German firm or BMW. 🤣 Toyota came out and said that was totally false. The 2JZ stemmed from the Toyota's M family of engines (all straight-6) from the '60s and had not an ounce of collaboration with any German firm nor BMW's M division. The Toyota's M family of engines started in 1965, way before any BMW's M division was founded (in 1972). 😏
My absolute favorite Japanese classic car of all time. This thing stands among the Mercedes-Benz 300SL and Lamborghini Miura. Toyota has been shooting for excellence ever since its genesis and it still is today. Love the 2000GT and love Toyota!
Uh, no. You may think that, but at the end of the day it is still just a front engine, rwd touring car with an inline 6. That’s a pretty ubiquitous design. The Jags from this era were almost all that way. The 240, 260, 280z were all like that. The TR6 was a convertible, but it had an X frame like the 2000 as well. There was nothing especially ground breaking developed in this car, it was just a decent quality unit. I mean, they even stole the friggin chassis from Lotus…it may have a cool design, but this is simply another decent Asian vehicle that is severely over hyped and under sold, making it rare. And here we come upon the only thing special about it; rarity. The 300sl was ground breaking in design and concept, won many touring car races. The Miura was the first of a breed of cars that didn’t exist before. The 2000 stole its engineering to make a competitive car off the backs of others’ labor and design.
I consider myself a person that knows a lot about cars and history of cars... But they way Jason presents these informations is on level unreachable for simple peasents like me. As always - great stuff :)

Great video guys, outstanding. Entertaining, informative, and so well produced. And the ending shots of the car in the road … just wonderful. Thank you.
The Jaguar E-Type was beautiful. Then this came along eight years later, mimicking the Juguar's lines. Considering only exterior esthetics, I much prefer the E-type.
I can respect that, but feel just the opposite as I prefer the proportions of the 2000GT over the E-Type. Furthermore I actually prefer the aesthetics/proportions of the 240z over the 2000GT and the E-Type both. Sadly, the Z car is seriously let down by its interior among this group. Of course it was the only budget offering of the three. Regardless, they are all beautiful cars that share the same basic visual formula.
@Ali Cuntë I agree with your sentiments. Stating a preference for one thing over another doesn't necessarily downplay the less favored option. We all like what we like, but that doesn't mean that we can't agree they are all wonderful looking cars. I would add that it is not just down to the proportions, but also those things that automotive designers were able to get away with before increasingly restrictive safety regulations were put into place. For me personally, the best looking cars will always predate 1973 (when the 5mph safety bumper regulation was enacted here in the States).

The Toyota 2000GT is definitely the most beautiful car ever made (IMHO). My introduction to this car was in 1967 in the movie You Only Live Twice at age 12 seen at Shopper's World, Framingham, MA, USA. My very first actual close up look was in 1973 at age 18 when living in Kyoto, Japan parked along Kawaramachi near the intersection of Sanjo-dori. It was a beautiful pristine red example. Although I was in a hurry, I had to stop and just kept walking around it over and over and over and over and over again. I still remember this as though it was yesterday!
What would be the donor car? It needs to have an inline 6 with a long hood, the only car I can think of is the BMW Z3 , or if the Z4 is also an inline 6, the new supra might be too complicated to transform into a 2000GT kit car
I am glad that you pointed out the Nissan A550X project. My father was involved in the project, and he used to tell me some of his stories. He passed away last year.

I told the guy at the gas station that I was going to buy this car when I grew up. However, I still can't buy it, and all I've bought are a few scale models. I'm an old Japanese man who loves 2000GT.

Yep, longer driving with us in the car is a must ! In and out sound while shifting is porn !
What a beautiful compliment, I feel this way about it too.
Got to love that level of pettiness.
There's a company in Japan that will make a 2000gt replica with a Beams or even a 2JZ.
Yes Rocky Auto. Although there are a number of replica 2000GT makers. The club president has a SCCA tribute that is a mix of Nissan GTR and F355 parts, plus a built 3.0L engine.
@@brendanmcaleer4058 👍😳
A friend of mine just sold a Shelby Toyota 2000gt for 2.5 M
It’s crazy the amount of amazing content we get. Y’all are doing gods work.
I remember watching 'You only live twice' as a boy and I was mesmerized by the 2000GT... The next week I went to my local library to learn all that I could about the car(yes I'm old)
This car has always been one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen.
Everyone has those fantasies of what they woulda drove back in the day, well, if I had the money, you're looking at it
Agreed- nuff said and well said…
the question is how can we reach a point were we can afford these things
Cammisa's style and delivery is totally engaging and entertaining. One of the very best.
Thank you Japan for making gorgeous cars that were reliable!
Well Jason, You did it again. Cars, history, and driving, what's better than this. Well done!
And this is why I have a naturally aspirated 7MGE in my 1983 Supra mk2 instead of a JZ. The sound it makes is divine! Sounds exactly the same as a 2000GT with a decent exhaust.
This is the BEST UA-cam Automotive channel bar none! Can't wait for the next video :)
Got to appreciate the partnership between Toyota and Yamaha in making otherworldly vehicles, especially at making engines for both this car and the Lexus LFA.
Looking forward for this kind of partnership again in the future, though chances are unlikely if Toyota decides to go fully electric.
Toyota and Yamaha also collaborated on the 2ZZ engine too, their partnership is guaranteed to result in gems being created.
iirc, Yamaha said they will not make car engine again back in 2019 or 2020.
And the best part is Yamaha worked on many other projects for Toyota. Yamaha can tune anything to get the most out of it!
What a work of art. I am, of course, referring to both the car and this episode. Simply gorgeous.
My absolute favorite Japanese classic car of all time. This thing stands among the Mercedes-Benz 300SL and Lamborghini Miura.
Toyota has been shooting for excellence ever since its genesis and it still is today.
Love the 2000GT and love Toyota!
IMO, the most attractive car of all time.
And the Fiero.
Jason, why do I end up with tears in my eyes after every episode!!??
This continues to be one of the absolute best UA-cam channels. Love these REVelations videos! Keep up the great work, Jason and Anthony!
Each episode on this series is better that the previous one, thank god we have real car enthusiasts making car videos
I consider myself a person that knows a lot about cars and history of cars...
But they way Jason presents these informations is on level unreachable for simple peasents like me.
As always - great stuff :)
Im sure
u allready Missleaded or brainwashed
'Snick-snickiest-snick'. I'm using that gem of a quote forever now. I love these car profiles. Ex-execellentiest.
Equally reliable in performance as it is beautiful. Just a gorgeous car. A car novice would think the 2000GT is certainly European.
Except, for me, it looks very Japanese (in a good way).
Is a pathetic copy of european cars
@@ivangamer8022 Far from “pathetic”.
@@ivangamer8022 It looks IMHO better than the E-type for example.
@@ivangamer8022 lmao mad
What an awesome channel. These stories have done far more to get me into cars than any other video on youtube.
Thank you so much Jason!
I've long had a crush on this car, but never got to see an actual modern review video with driving, much less a bit of flogging. Well done as usual.
The 2000GT is one of many dream cars I've had since I was a kid! Always thought the car looked gorgeous, and now this video shows that it's great even underneath that bodywork! Would love to even have the chance to see one, let alone drive one. Stunning car 👌🏻
Jason this was very entertaining, informative and perfect distraction from scheduling and team members planning 👍👍👍
So I’m an old car man that new of Hagerty back in the day at the car dealership. I knew back then they offered really cool replacement value insurance for hot rods and exotics that State Farm just didn’t offer.
Watching these videos and seeing them shoot there relevance into the modern car world to the stratosphere, shows me these are still car people through and through. I have subscribed and decided to get my 2022 GT500 insured through Hagerty insurance.
I was introduced to this car a few years ago and I think it is definitely my favorite sports car of all time. That's a strong statement.
Wow - the drive footage at 11:45 - that engine sound is the sound of the 60s gentleman motoring. Beautiful!
I dont know about you but if I get the cash this will be a collector for me hands down. This is the reason we have a Supra MK3 and a MK4 and its the father of them all. LFA and and LC500 def has the Genetics of it in 1 swell swoop.
Please never stop doing the unmolested outros of the pure sounds and driving of the cars.
It’s by far my favorite classic car
Cammisa, you are an astounding great UA-cam automotive journalist. Thanks to Hagerty for giving you this channel!
Someone needs to do a breakdown of that engine. It sounds so good.
I really effin love this channel, doesn't matter if a YUGO is presented on here or a Suzuki Swift.
Informative, cool,entertaining ,and witty.
Dig it ....
At this point, Jason could make a video about the origin of Coffee and I would still watch it. His style of story telling is beyond ludicrous. Absolutely love it.
I love this car so much. It's prettier than an E-Type, maybe even prettier than a Series 1 Lotus Elan. I wish they weren't so vanishingly rare, because I'd love to own one.
Oh god I’ve watched this video 10 times. This is the most. beautiful. automobile. ever. made.
He had the chance to say toyopet to toyojet
This is one of the series that i wait all the time - Jason Cammisa's REVelations.
I like these documentary-like piece. continue churning out more quality content, mr Cammisa.
Yamaha also designed the original Taurus SHO motor. It was a monster and the 89 SHO ate 89 Stangs for lunch
At one time, All - Amerian Racers (AAR / when it was still a Partnership of Carrol Shelby & Dan Gurney) Also did some Development & Marketing Analysis for the 2000GT. It would eventually lead to Dan's long association with Toyota, in "INDY" Racing.
Finally!! I've been waiting for you to covering this car. Damn it. Love this car
Jason... I ❤️ you
Camissa is one of the best reviewers. Listening to him is really good one can learn so many things about history and the special techniques of cars.
2000GT, the Lexus LFA before LFA was a things, half a decade earlier
You have done an outstanding job reviewing this car. I never knew anything about this car. NICE JOB Jason! If Yamaha / Toyota / Lexus build a car again - it would take over the planet. I love my Toyota.
The grandfather of any toyota sportcars and supercars,no wondered most modern toyota sports car got roof line siluet inspired from this car.
If referring to the new Supra then I agree, the MK5 Supra takes a lot of design ques from this car.
Great video guys, outstanding.
Entertaining, informative, and so well produced. And the ending shots of the car in the road … just wonderful.
Thank you.
THE most expensive Toyota of all time, period.
This has become one of my favorite automotive shows ever!
Props to Jason Cammisa for being one of the best presenters on any media platform today.
Really is a beautiful car!
One of My Favourite Classic Cars All-Time, BEST Bond Car Ever!…
Fun fact: The Toyota Crown is still being sold today in 2022 in Japan. That means the same nameplate (since it's introduction in *1955* , NOT 1958!) has been in production for 67 YEARS! 😎👍
And the Corolla is the most sold nameplate through 12 generations with over 50,000,000 units.
@@fcorivers The Crown grew in size so much in 12yrs that the original E10 Corolla was made to fill in the gap as a small car, along with the Tiara, Corona, Mark II, Cressida, and other models. 👍
i was not a car enthusiast but because of your knowledge and exuberant story teller im becoming one
The car's interior is not tiny...Jason is just the size of a truck 😉
Best car channel on UA-cam by far.
You and your team never fail to impress, Jason. Just wonderful content!
Always nice coming back to classic Hagerty videos about classic cars.
I just got a job at a Toyota dealership. I’m so humble and excited to be apart of such a reliable brand.
I’m shocked someone hasn’t made a “kit car” body kit of this car. Just beautiful !
What would be the donor car? It needs to have an inline 6 with a long hood, the only car I can think of is the BMW Z3 , or if the Z4 is also an inline 6, the new supra might be too complicated to transform into a 2000GT kit car
Can never have enough of these!
Series 3 IS350 F Sport owner here... Genealogy map completed. Thank you !
Beautiful car👍 Jason presents this car with the professionalism and respect it deserves. Excellent again👍
Best Auto Journalism period ☺️🇦🇺
Glad to see this Show back!
I always look forward to these. Thank you, Jason! It’s always an incredible video with incredible writing!
I am glad that you pointed out the Nissan A550X project. My father was involved in the project, and he used to tell me some of his stories. He passed away last year.
When I was a kid in 1970, I saw this car at a local gas station. It was so cool that I fell in love with it at first sight. I told the guy at the gas station that I was going to buy this car when I grew up. However, I still can't buy it, and all I've bought are a few scale models. I'm an old Japanese man who loves 2000GT.
i have a GT86, and every time I see pictures of the 2000 GT I notice more and more design ques between the two. beautiful car!
Ever since seeing You Only Live Twice (at a drive-in, yep, old) I've loved this car. Thank you for covering it and more so, for driving it. The sound is so awesome, nothing beats a tuned inline six! Great stuff! PS please post out takes from your show!
I was looking for a comment on the film. I was just a kid. If a hot Japanese Girl shows up and says get in Johnnysan. I'm on it! Left or right hand drive. I don't care.
While i enjoy watching your series Jason, the true pleasure comes from the small driving segment at the end of each video you (& your team) produce. And i must say, this one, truly had the hairs on my arms standing up with excitement. Just wish it lasted longer though. Yeah yeah, i know that totally set up the "that's what she said!" joke, LOL! Happy motoring!
