Why the KETO Diet Makes Diabetes Worse

  • On the surface it can seem that many different diets can offer similar benefits for disease reversal, especially when scrolling through google, UA-cam or any social media.
The truth is that while many diets can appear to give similar results - like weight loss and reduction of HbA1c (measurement of average blood sugar), the mechanism of how the results come about and the impact on overall health between plant-based and meat-based diets could not be more different.
I bring up the example of diabetes today because of a recent wellness appointment for a gentleman with kidney failure who needs my help to reverse his disease, whose wife insisted that she needed a different diet than him because her issues were “metabolic” rather than renal.
I decided to flip on the camera and explain why this is an incorrect and dangerous diet to help others who believe the same thing. Not to stir up controversy, but to save lives.
She has been faithfully using the Ketogenic or keto diet to successfully lose weight and lower her HbA1c, which she believes means she has reversed her diabetes. Unfortunately, as I explain in the video, she has hidden the evidence of her diabetes while increasing her insulin resistance and increasing her risks of heart disease, cancer, and other diseases like autoimmune diseases. Even doctors who rely on the HbA1c test who have not considered the physiology of HbA1c have made this mistake to the great detriment of their patients.
Heart attacks are the most common cause of death, even in people with diabetes and autoimmune diseases, so this diet that focuses on meat and animal fat for the primary food source actually increases your risk of heart attack and death, even while you look slimmer and your labs appear more favorable. I have also had multiple people come to me who developed kidney failure while on the keto diet.
Also important is the lack of vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants on the keto diet which make people more susceptible to cancer, autoimmune diseases, and prolonged infections as the COVID research I mentioned also indicates.

The keto diet made me so "sick" that almost all my Metabolic Syndrome symptoms disappeared and people say I look 10 years younger. I lost 40 lbs and have kept it off since 2016. Triglycerides used to be almost 300 but dropped to under 70. HDL that was under 35 for 25+ years is now in the 60's. My blood pressure slightly elevated is the only part of the Metabolic Syndrome that I still have but I've reduced my BP meds by 75%. My vision even improved. Inflammation tested as CRP is less than .5. I am thrilled with how sick the results have been.

That is wonderful! Short term it can be really great. Long term high meat intake and saturated fats dramatically raise your risks of heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases and more, so if you are doing well, it's time to add back the nutrition with fresh vegetables and fruits. If you don't have metabolic syndrome your sugar levels will be nice and healthy when you do that. Thanks for commenting and glad to see you are doing so well!

People on keto do eat vegetables and fruits. Keto is no sugar, bad oils like soybean oil, cutting out seed flours that also cause inflammation, and no junk food.
Eat more protein raises energy and reduces mental issues.
This man lost his weight 7 years ago, has kept it off, and improved his health but you can’t admit that your flawed out of date nutritional information could be wrong 😳🙄
I also lost 40 pounds almost 3 years ago and my husband has always lost 60 pounds in the last 7 1/2 months doing keto/low carb.
My husband’s A1c went from 9.1 to 5.2. All of our tests results have improved!
Do we eat as much fat as the initial keto program suggested-no, I try follow Dr. Eric Westman’s Phase 1 in his End Carb Confusion book. I also have been following carnivore information from Dr. Chaffee.

    Dr. Goldner,
Your critique of the ketogenic diet is certainly thought-provoking, yet it appears to lack a nuanced understanding of the scientific basis and clinical applications of this dietary approach. Allow me to address your concerns more elaborately and assertively:
    1. Insulin Resistance: While you allege that saturated fats from animal sources exacerbate insulin resistance, it's vital to acknowledge the complexity of this issue. The keto diet's success in improving insulin resistance is not solely due to carbohydrate restriction but also the metabolic benefits of ketosis, including reduced inflammation and improved cellular insulin sensitivity. To oversimplify by branding saturated fats as the sole culprits in insulin resistance is to disregard a wealth of research that suggests otherwise.
    2. HbA1c Levels: You attempt to downplay the significance of lowered HbA1c levels achieved on a keto diet. While it's true that keto doesn't "cure" diabetes, it unequivocally improves glycemic control. To dismiss this as insignificant is to ignore the tangible benefits experienced by countless individuals. Lower HbA1c levels translate to fewer blood sugar spikes, which is inherently beneficial for those with diabetes.
    3. Hidden Health Risks: Your reference to studies linking animal fats to heart disease and cancer requires a more critical examination. Firstly, the quality of animal fats varies immensely, as does their impact on health. Suggesting that all animal fats are detrimental is an oversimplification. Moreover, framing these studies as an indictment of the entire ketogenic approach is overly simplistic. Quality matters, and the responsible consumption of unprocessed animal fats can be compatible with a healthy ketogenic diet.
    4. Pandemic Perspective: The study you invoke regarding healthcare workers' dietary choices during the COVID-19 pandemic is intriguing but needs context. Singling out a specific diet as the sole determinant of viral susceptibility is reductionist. The factors influencing immune function are multifaceted, including genetics, environment, and lifestyle. While a plant-based diet has shown immune benefits, it doesn't negate the potential advantages of a well-executed keto diet, particularly for those who prioritize metabolic health.
In conclusion, while your critique emphasizes the importance of dietary choices in health, it's paramount to recognize the intricacies of nutrition. The ketogenic diet offers a unique metabolic advantage and has demonstrated effectiveness in managing diabetes, supporting weight loss, and improving various health markers. To dismiss these achievements as insignificant is to disregard the evidence-based benefits that many have experienced.
    Respectfully,
    Jens Graikowski

This is quite ridiculous, and a good example of misinformation. One thing is being a vegan, another push for gobbling carbs, which is very damaging to the normal folk that has weight issues and diabetes. Her examples of the risks for not being vegan are based on weak epidemiologic studies where they find weak association with meat consumption. I have never had a weight problem, I'm very athletic, have been following a ketogenic diet, high in animal fat, for close to 30 years and all my markers for coronary heart disease, including Hb1ac, tryglycerides , coronary calcium score, C-reactive protein, are excellent. I will die at some point, but at least I am physically very active, feel great, and take zero medications. If those are not good metrics for health, I don't know what she is advocating for... ah, yeah, veganism...

A report from the New York medical examiner's office leaked a year after his death said that Atkins had a history of heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension, and that at the time of his death he weighed 258 pounds (117 kg).[12] According to Stuart Trager, chairman of the Atkins Physicians Council (a group of physicians who work as consultants to the Atkins organization), this report contained incomplete medical records and that Atkins did not have a history of heart attack; instead, according to Trager, Atkins had cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease that was probably caused by a virus, not his diet.[14] His widow refused to allow an autopsy.[14]"---------The Dr. claiming Atkins had no heart attack history worked for the Atkins organization. Keto is not a high fat, no vegetables diet 🤦...Clean Keto is actually a moderate protein/HEALTHY fats, low carb/no sugar diet (some berries allowed) AND vegetables. Saturated animal fat is not unhealthy if the animal was raised humanely and organically. The fat/protein from animals raised in industrial farms full of antibiotics/growth hormones is the real issue. Organic Ghee butter, which is loaded with K vitamin will not clog your arteries! In fact, it will help do the opposite! People... please research on the 'Cholesterol Myth' 🕵️
BTW... Vegans get diabetes and heart attacks...no animal fat there 🤔🤔 Something else to ponder...the entire Western medical industry has pushed a 'low fat' diet on their patients for decades now but heart disease rates has kept on raising 🤔
Another thing, a vegan "hamburger" is not healthy because it's "vegan"...READ THE INGREDIENTS! What makes us sick is the tons of artificial and dangerous ingredients in foods and how non-organic animals are fed and raised. I know you asked this question long ago, but if you are still battling candida and other infections, my experience might help. I've had candida overgrowth since 2015. I've tried multiple treatments without a permanent solution until 2022. So, yes, I've battled candida for seven years. Last year, though, I followed a protocol in a book called "Jini's Healing Guide: Natural Treatments for Gut Infection." Candida overgrowth was NOT why I followed her method (as I had another chronic condition). Still, I've had no candida overgrowth since completing the treatment. Considering that I did not change my diet (it has been mainly plant-based for years), I am sure it was because of her treatment.
Her natural protocol involves taking high dosages of oregano oil, a natural antibiotic, every day to kill the harmful bacteria that might be causing you gut problems. It kills yeast as well. And the thing with candida is that it is also associated with the presence of other gut parasites. During that time, I've also taken wormwood, cloves, and black walnut (herbs suggested by Dr. Hulda Clark) to kill parasites. I also took the probiotics suggested in her book.
After three months of following this protocol, my candida issues were gone. It's been more than one year now. I saw a lot of parasites coming out too, pretty gross. My diet today is whole food plant-based (I eliminated eggs and milk, which I used to consume in the past), and I still take those herbs occasionally for maintenance.

Palmitic acid gums up receptors, As the name suggests, PA is a major component of palm oil (44% of total fats), but significant amounts of PA can also be found in meat and dairy products (50-60% of total fats), as well as cocoa butter (26%) and olive oil (8-20%). Furthermore, PA is present in breast milk with 20-30% of total fats (Innis, 2016). Its not how you eat , its what you eat. Blanket statements about saturated fats gumming up receptors is WRONG. Certain types of fat are responsible more than others...More proof the person in this video is a quack.

So dr. Atkins died of a heart attack you say? So did my friend's dad at age 48, coincidentally three years after he converted to a vegan diet. The middle-aged dietician gentleman who worked at our GP's surgery also died of a heart attack less than two years after converting to vegan. These events occurred more than a decade ago, thus precluding any conjecture regarding the events that resulted from the big 2020 global illness. At university one of my classmates fell due to an acute iron shortage induced blackout, thanks to a sudden conscience-based vegan diet she had embarked on. Thankfully she was young and not seriously injured. Dr. Atkins was a bold man who bravely challenged the empty carbohydrate big food industry. I vividly recall the way Big Food came after him to discredit his work. Also, for your information dr. Atkins died a result of an injury sustained by a fall and not of a heart attack, but I presume this does not suit your narrative.
    I quote a 2004 news article:
"(CNN) -- The widow of low-carb diet guru Dr. Robert Atkins said Monday that she was "outraged" at charges her husband was obese at the time of his death and denied his heart problems had anything to do with the protein-heavy diet he espoused.
"I was outraged when I first read that because it's totally not true," Veronica Atkins said from Miami, Florida.
"He was not overweight. He did not have heart failure," she added.
Atkins slipped and fell on an icy street April 8, suffering a severe head injury, and remained in a coma until life support was withdrawn April 17. He was 72."
What is really heartbreaking is the big money spent by the empty-carb manufacturing industry in discrediting healthy eating and promoting the pseudo-science "health benefits" of eating their sugar-laced fat-free cardboard products. The latter is the most significant diet-based contributor to the type 2 diabetes & heart disease epidemic. People are catching on though. Being sick and obese isn't pleasant and it's not too difficult to test what diet works long term and which one doesn't. You merely have to read through the comments on this video to get an idea of where the balance of experience lies.

I recently heard this issue acknowledged and addressed by the keto community as follows: After being fat adapted on a keto diet, a reintroduction of fruit will for a short time increase the spike in blood sugar higher than normal. During this period, the receptors adjust to the added sugar intake. A knowledgeable keto doctor advises the patient to ingest a slice of white bread with every meal for about two weeks before the blood test to avoid a misleading lab result that occurs during the adjustment phase.

My mom is not statistically significant or peer reviewed but her experience has had real significance among her circle of friends and family.
Nearly 3 years ago, my 84 year old mother finally had a follow up appointment with her physician which was delayed for months because her doctor has been in charge of treating Covid patients in the hospital and in nursing homes and was not able to meet with her. She had a full blood panel taken for this visit and her doctor was astounded at the progress she had made during the last year. She is now no longer diabetic and she was instructed to stop taking insulin after having been on it for 12 years. Her doctor also praised her kidney function which has never looked better. Also, she couldn't believe that her total cholesterol was only 139, with LDL of 67, HDL of 60, and triglycerides of 82 which is a big improvement for her. According to the Framingham Heart Study, these numbers mean that she is virtually "heart attack proof" as many plant based doctors have noted. Her physician (Johns Hopkins med school grad) mentioned that she is reconsidering the diet for her family based on this experience. She also asked my mom to share her experience with our community after the pandemic. All of these results are exactly what I had hoped would occur. Below is a typical day of eating for her. I plugged her bloodwork test values into the Levine Biological Age Calculator and she has aged minus 15 years during the last 3.5 years. I joke with her that she may be required to give up her Social Security benefits if she keeps going like that. She was able to get off of all blood pressure medications after 3 years, tapering off so as not to over-medicate which is dangerous because it can deprive tissues of necessary oxygen and nutrients. My understanding is that low carb diets are a workaround that do not address the root cause of diabetes which is excess intramyocellular lipids (also fatty liver/pancreas) and the resulting insulin resistance. Excess saturated fats and refined sugar/flour are the most common cause of this metabolic system failure. Unless a person can eat whole food complex carbs again without a prolonged spiking of their blood sugar, type 2 diabetes has not been reversed.
Here is the menu for a typical day:
Breakfast: Organic steel cut oats with some buckwheat and wild blueberries, raspberries, 1/2 banana, tablespoon of ground flax and ground chia seeds, tablespoon of hemp seeds, organic soy milk, cinnamon.
Lunch: Green smoothie heavy on the low-oxalate greens (frozen kale or collard greens, frozen pineapple, banana, orange, lemon wedge with rind, organic soy milk, avocado sliver, amla powder, dulse flakes, apple cider vinegar, blackstrap molasses, nutritional yeast, small scoop of hemp protein powder, fresh ginger, medjool date, fresh kale) with a small handful of almonds and walnuts - or - some soup and salad.
      Before dinner snack: one apple.
Dinner: Variety of simple meals including spaghetti, chili, vegetable soup with beans, lintel miso soup with organic tofu cubes/onions/mushrooms/kale, split pea soup with onions/mushrooms/carrots/celery/potato, roasted vegetables (squash/carrots/potatoes), rice and beans bowl with onions/mushrooms/kale/peppers/salsa, organic tofu scramble with onions/mushrooms/peppers/kale/turmeric/nutritional yeast, broccoli, asparagus, green beans, etc.
Dessert: frozen banana whip with papaya or strawberries topped some days with a couple of macadamia nuts or a Brazil nut - or - some red grapes.
Make sure to include G-Bombs every day for optimal immune system (i.e. - greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries, seeds). Avoid most processed foods. Include tofu perhaps twice a week but not more. Stop eating after an early dinner except for a few pistachios before bedtime.
Good luck and good health to you and your family!

I tell you from personal experience as an ex vegetarian, go Keto Carnivore. You need the protein and fats to restore your kidney and get your body in a balance state. I went from a EGR of 82 to 117. I caught it off lab work because all the doctors told me is that I was ok when I know I was not. Carnivore saved my kidney, took out so much inflammation that I can now move better even with all my bone issues from working 20 years lifting and vegetarianism. Plants have toxins. I noticed that as a gardener what the plants do so you will not touch them. We are the only species that eat plants that do not want us to eat them. Parsnips smell like gas, cucumbers and zucchini plants have all those spines and for a reason. I hope you are better.

I really like the fact that you talk about nutrition because it's rare for an MD to do so. I've used your hyper nourishing smoothie recipe for a while and have others using an entire pound of greens, too and we really like and appreciate it. But the vegan propaganda has got to go. Perhaps a more well-rounded conversation on the dangers of consuming factory farmed meats and hormone-based animal products and such and the amount of consumption would be more helpful. In my years of research and teaching as a medical anthropologist I cannot think of any culture on a global basis who were vegans. In fact, the healthiest and those with the greatest longevity, absence of disease, greater dental structures etc all consumed *fresh* meat sources, including consuming all parts of an animal - the eyeballs, organs etc. I'm not necessarily vying for people to consume animal products, but I just find myself in constant disagreement with narratives like the ones here (and others) with such a stance.

I'm not a doctor but here's the thing....yes saturated fat may be clogging up the receptors however this could be caused by a high carbohydrate diet in the sense that since we are loading up on two types of fuel, we are loading up on carbs all day every day more than fat, our bodies never switch to fat burning mode to use up all the excess fat in our diet much less the stored fat. With a vegan diet by intaking as little fat and fat soluble vitamins as possible the body is forced to use from its stores with the possibility of problems once the stores are used up. With a keto or carnivore diet with normal amounts of fat its essentially the opposite as the body in the absence of carbs will need to use dietary and stored fat as fuel but at the cost of possibly undereating due to appetite suppression and having to become glucose tolerant again, with keto the issue becomes eating enough food.
To me both can work well but whatever you want to believe without fat soluble vitamins and certain nutrients from animal products in your diet the body will eventually go into starvation, i grew up in Jamaica with Rastafarians that wasted away and some who stayed healthy by occasionally drinking milk or eating fish or chicken, modern supplementation can be helpful for vegans however quality becomes a concern. I would say whether you go vegan or keto the idea is to become insulin sensitive then switching to a Mediterranean style of eating getting rid of almost all processed foods and seed oils, my two cents.

It's a good video. The only part I'm skeptical of is the bit about eliminating type II diabetes in 4 weeks. After all, as she herself says, HbA1c (the measure of type II diabetes) is an average of blood sugar over 3 months. So how can you cure it in 4 weeks? I've been WFPB (whole food plant based) for quite a while now and it's been a lifesaver. My HbA1c started at a dangerously high 11.8 and over time - a few years - it dropped: first to 11.2, then to 10.8, then 10.2, 9.5. 8.8, 7.4, etc. Currently it's a perfectly normal 5.2 and I've been off all blood sugar meds for over 3 years now, and I eat basically all carbs, including lots of potatoes and fruits and veggies. My doctor is very pleased. But this was NOT a 4 week turnaround! I think we should be clearer that is is over time. I'm happy staying WFPB for the rest of my life. I've lost 140 lb and am no longer obese for the first time in my adult life. I'm down to just 144 lb. But it was definitely not quick. What's the rush anyway? You're getting healthier over time and eating a way that's easy to live with comfortably forever.

A1C went from 5.9 to 5.7 in 6 months following Dr. G. I don't expect it to happen overnight and I don't want to give up fruit. That means his average blood sugars were so much better that it's skewed his average a1c into a healthier range even in that short period of time. It's been quite remarkable how quickly the A1c comes down. I was surprise myself when I first saw it.

It seems that research (from a pro keto/low-carb-high-fat/animal-based perspective) is beginning to show that SOME carbohydrates in the diet is beneficial, and even Paul Saladino has revised his stance (to his credit). You say that a Harvard study shows that eating meat and animal fats is associated with an increased risk of cancer - were all of the subjects eating a keto/carnivore or heavily animal-based diet? Seems that this is a common misrepresentation within these studies that show animal foods to be dangerous - they ignore the other foods that are eaten by or lifestyle habits of the test subjects. Surely weight loss via keto is better than no weight loss at all, since it might reduce the chances of developing other related symptoms i.e. Sleep Apnea?

NO research has shown that... Paul Saladino sells supplements high in iron and vitamin A, high vitamin a, and iron wrecks the thyroid, and Doctor Saladino has continued to ignore this... Adding carbs is not beneficial, it's just a bandaid, carbs=water retention, and water retention=diluting toxins in the body... You are giving Paul credit for what? He went from vegan, to carnivore, to whatever diet he is on now, and it is very likely that soon he will have another diet, keto by itself was never the problem, if you look at Pauls diet, you will notice that vitamin A levels are completely through the roof, so is iron and copper, and he has even increased this by adding fruits which the mangoes alone are adding even more vitamin A, when things like this are overlooked and you just blame keto, it's really sad because then as a doctor you have people following you and lead them astray, you guys need to realize that most people that started keto were deathly sick from eating carbs, so it makes no sense that they needed carbs that much after such a relatively short time off them, compared to eating enormous amounts almost their entire lives...

The keto diet is the most studied diet ever and the results people obtain on a proper keto diet are surely undeniable. Why when we have been eating animal protein for thousands upon thousands of years is it suddenly bad for us? Eat plants if you wish, not here to change your mind on that but if a diet gives the body everything it needs you shouldn't need to supplement. On a plant based vegan diet or the alternative keto diet, people become healthier because they are not eating junk foods (mostly carb and fat based foods) but on a long term vegan diet you need to supplement to stay healthy and to get all the nutrients that you need.

The proper way of doing keto is to eat clean organic everything, zero sugar, nothing processed. Preferably don't consume your fats from animal fats. Get your fats through nuts/avocados and other healthy options. Eat lean low fat animal proteins or wild caught fish for proteins. Also she doesn't mention anything about fasting and intermittent fasting along with a clean keto lifestyle. Also the point of the lifestyle is to never go back to eating carbs and sugars. Of course people will get sick and possibly be worst then they were before if they go back to eating unhealthy foods that spike their insulin. I disagree WHOLEHEARTEDLY... Keto is key, carbohydrates, and all the foods high in them... Human beings never ate much of these foods historically until relatively modern times, the problem why keto makes people sicker is because when you eat mainly meat, you cut out a whole lot of anti nutrients, you lose weight, you lose water retention, so toxins that the body cannot get rid of easily accumulate, and iron, which causes it's own form of diabetes, is the main issue along with vitamin A, it's not keto that makes people sicker, iron by itself causes heart disease, how can saturated fat cause insulin resistance, when so many people have reduced their consumption of it due to fear mongering yet they are statistically getting fatter and more insulin resistant? Just doesn't add up or make any sense, it's very easy to see why keto would make someone sicker, how about check those same labs that looked better, and see if anything such as iron, vitamin a, copper, etc went through the roof? since there are no more anti nutrients and junk food to delay or interrupt their absorption?

Some doctors don't want you to be that healthy because if you are healthy they won't find enough patients and clients so no job, experience speaks louder than doctors and i do confess keto is a remedy for sooooooooooo many diseases and even for your mind health .
