The side by side comparison would have been impressive if you had used the image from the same disc. The upscale feature is to enhance 1080P video. Instead of comparing a standard 1080P image to the upscaled image you compared a 4K image to a 1080P image.
The freezing issue is caused by the player dynamically updating Bluray/DVD info from the internet. Go to Bluray/DVD settings>BD Internet Connection and select 'Do not allow'. I haven't had any trouble since and don't care about d'loaded bluray info anyway.

There really haven't been many new 4K Blu-ray players in the last couple of years (other than the PS5 & Xbox Series X, of course), so don't let the UBP-X700's age stop you. It's broadly regarded as the best bang-for-buck 4K Blu-ray player on the market; it doesn't have the enhanced features of more expensive Blu-ray players, but it's usually the cheapest player that supports Dolby Vision.

Very in-depth video review! The biggest disadvantage of this player is the lack of Dolby Digital Plus support, which is a shame since Netflix and Disney Plus provide Dolby Atmos in a DD+ codec container. This means, you cannot access to their Atmos options. Atmos is supported "only" in a Dolby TrueHD codec basis on discs. Dolby Vision HDR needs to be "manually" selected to output it since the player did not support it originally. If Sony added DD+ support, this device would be the best money could buy. Why SONY? Why?
I've been thinking about buying this unit ... So, if I put my 4K UHD movie in with an Atmos soundtrack through my Atmos enabled 4K receiver, the receiver won't play that soundtrack? Or, am I missing something?

Since we're all watching more TV right now, this is a good thing. Keep up the good work, bro. Stay safe too!
The dual HDMI out lets you run video direct to your projector/TV and the audio output to your processor/receiver via HDMI also. This is the first player that matches the video image quality of my Oppo Bluray, which doesn't stream and has trouble with some new releases. If you switch receivers or speakers, use just the single HDMI to set up so you can use the on screen menu of your processor and when you get it the way you like switch to dual outs for no compromise viewing. You have to activate the audio only output in the 'Home' setup menu under 'HDMI'. I know the video signal isn't supposed to be altered in the pass-thru of the receiver but my OCD tells me otherwise.
This player DOES in fact support Dolby ATMOS so you may want to write a correction. The qualifier is if your speaker soundbar/AVR is HDMI 2.1, is ATMOS compatible and you plug directly into that source. For example from my Sony X700 player I run a high-speed HDMI cable to my Soundbar 2.1 HDMI port. The video is then passed on via the eARC ports from the soundbar to the TV.

I heard that some 4K BluRay players can play disc from different regions (ABC). Now I heard the 4K HDR players are region free for the 4K disc, but what about the regular BluRay disc?
so here's the thing, i already use a sony BDP S3500, i'm not sure if it's been hacked or if it was made by sony to be region free, don't know and don't care, it does exactly what i wanted it to do. however, when i played specifically the droopy theatrical collection, this weird, half circle, transparent type of interface would cover the screen at the beginning of each episode. i contacted sony support and they essentially told me how to disable all onscreen interface which doesn't bother me too much, there is the slight annoyance of things like searching for a specific scene and not being able to see something like the scene counter telling me i'm on scene 1/20 or something like that. is it worth picking this up, or should i stick with my current player?
Does this work with PCs? I'm planning to buy this (Sony UBP-X700) to run blu ray discs. Do I need some expensive software or something. Because this is not really as cheap where I live as it is in some other countries.
I’ve been hearing that there won’t be an 8K Blu Ray. In this case, I think HVD, Holographic Versatile Disc, should be the 8K video format! It was in research and development for many years and can hold up to 6TB of data per disc!
It's because 8K is just a gimmick. To even notice the slightest difference in 8K, you need a 100+ inch screen and you need to be sitting 2ft away from it, which is just ridiculous.
@@richardskelding4528 Not a gimmick for shooting. We shoot in 8K using our RED cameras daily. Future proof is how we regard it along with allowing us to crop. We truly embrace 8K and look forward to a future with it which by then, we'll be shooting in 12K!

@@BarcelonasHotCrowd I agree but that means you have to have good Internet and unlimited data for streaming 4K movies constantly. So you can’t have any data caps which is expensive. The movies are usually slightly cheaper with streaming apps. So you might make up some of the difference.

I bought this player a little over a year and a half ago it only lasted 3 months before it broke sent it back to Sony they sent another new replacement and know that one has started the same thing as the first one don’t expect it to work very long
Can you add applications to this player?
Nope

What are those four buttons for: Yellow, blue, red, green?
hi, i just bought this product, but it only has netflix, youtube and spotify in it, how can i download the others?
You can’t, I mention on the video
I feel like most 4K TVs are smart TVs with these a lot more apps.
can it plays dvds & blu ray discs on it also.
Yes
Will it play DVDs?
Yes
With this player, can you pause the movie & then move forward frame by frame?
Yeap. You have to keep hitting the pause button. But it advances frame by frame
@@Googaliemoogalie Can it play in slow motion too?
Steve can i play CD without switching on the tv? Just control the next track from the remote control.
Sure If you use the outs to an audio system
on one TV I have the UBP-X800 I am getting a new TV will I be happy with the UBP-x700 what are the differences between the models ?
In screen settings instead of auto I set to 4K, that’s ok right?
I have 2 of these their great 4k players
Glad you like them
Does this Sony Player Play Native 4K or 4K Upscale? Thanks for a Great Video!
It depends on the disc, it plays both
This is a great video!! I’am buyin one!
Thanks for the enlightening video, Steve. Can you tell me if it recognizes DTS and Dolby audio (both in 5.1) through MP4 and MKV files through the usb connection? Thank you very much in advance.
Not sure I only had the demo for a few dsys
Dolby Atmos DTS X and Dolby vision have?
Thanks Steve! Just ordered one
mine is a piece of junk. Half the time it won't turn on and I have to unplug it back and plug it back in and sometimes when I do that it reboots the thing to factory so I have to start all over again. When it does turn on I ALWAYS, EVERY TIME have to unplug from the back and plug back in to get it to connect to internet so I can use Netflix. So so disappointed with this thing. My internet is strong so that aint the problem.
Yep. Mine randomly will choose to freeze on 4k discs, thinking that it was the discs but these players are not consistent and not very well built to undergo a movie marathon for sure!
A whole UHD is disappointment and piece of junk
Sell it and save up for the lg ubk90 or the Sony x800m2.
@@thephilosopher5799 why those
@@doyouluvit so late but I’ve been off social media for a while. But because their newer and more reliable. But you might have a defective player. When this first happen you should have returned it and got a replacement, If youre okay with it having minor inconvenience getting it started up you don’t actually need to get a better player if you don’t want. Use your 4K tv to stream. Most 4K TVs have streaming capabilities.
I just picked up on of these in mint condition with the power supply, remote and manual for $10 at a thrift store
Does it play divX format? Thanks.
does this have bluetooth? I think the X800M2 does, but it is $100 more
No bluetooth
I heard that some 4K BluRay players can play disc from different regions (ABC). Now I heard the 4K HDR players are region free for the 4K disc, but what about the regular BluRay disc?
Blu ray aren’t region free. Some players can be region free but they have to be modified for that so it will cost you more for that.
Does the sony bdp-s1500 (1080p bluray player)also output dolby atmos. Can I connect hdmi2.1 cable to that and get output on my atmos soundbar.
usb must be ntfs or fat32?
so here's the thing, i already use a sony BDP S3500, i'm not sure if it's been hacked or if it was made by sony to be region free, don't know and don't care, it does exactly what i wanted it to do. however, when i played specifically the droopy theatrical collection, this weird, half circle, transparent type of interface would cover the screen at the beginning of each episode. i contacted sony support and they essentially told me how to disable all onscreen interface which doesn't bother me too much, there is the slight annoyance of things like searching for a specific scene and not being able to see something like the scene counter telling me i'm on scene 1/20 or something like that. is it worth picking this up, or should i stick with my current player?
Does this work with PCs? I'm planning to buy this (Sony UBP-X700) to run blu ray discs. Do I need some expensive software or something. Because this is not really as cheap where I live as it is in some other countries.
I’m pretty sure you can connect this to a monitor
I’ve been hearing that there won’t be an 8K Blu Ray. In this case, I think HVD, Holographic Versatile Disc, should be the 8K video format! It was in research and development for many years and can hold up to 6TB of data per disc!
I’m sure it will be just streaming services
It's because 8K is just a gimmick. To even notice the slightest difference in 8K, you need a 100+ inch screen and you need to be sitting 2ft away from it, which is just ridiculous.
@@richardskelding4528 Not a gimmick for shooting. We shoot in 8K using our RED cameras daily. Future proof is how we regard it along with allowing us to crop. We truly embrace 8K and look forward to a future with it which by then, we'll be shooting in 12K!
@@BarcelonasHotCrowdmore likely be 56K the future for media grows rapidly, tv will be more then likely a glass portal to our next movie adventure!
what do you think is the norm an option for an ordinary movie lover or x800m2 is better?
x800mk2 is far better but an ordinary movie lover would be better off with an Apple TV 4K with 4K Dolby Vision iTunes films in all honesty along with its future proofing.
@@BarcelonasHotCrowd I agree but that means you have to have good Internet and unlimited data for streaming 4K movies constantly. So you can’t have any data caps which is expensive. The movies are usually slightly cheaper with streaming apps. So you might make up some of the difference.
Mine works with the Sony HTX8500 Dolby Atmos and DTS.
Im buying one of these players because I was down sizing my movie collection, had about a half dozen 4K discs still sealed and just figuring out they wont play on standard bluray player. 😅😅
Cool
Loved the video! If I only have a 1080p projector is it still worth it or not? Great video!
I have a JVC 1080P. Just bought this player. Very slightly better visual as compared to my previous Denon.
Can this 4k player connect to a 4k HDR samsung smart tv ?
? Yes
@@TechSteve nice , thx for reply 🙃
Great video man and very well explained. May I just check this Player will give me good high resolution if I attach it to my Panasonic, GX800, 4K Ultra HD Smart TV? Grateful for your views please. I have upgraded my HTMI cable with gold connectors that is capable for 4K UHD data.
Hi. Please what is the difference between this blue ray and Apple tv..wich one is better?? Thank u
A blueray is a disc and apple tv is a internet streamer
Noob question, but if this is Dolby Vision compatible, is it automatic that this would be compatible with Dolbt Atmos? Not sure if this would give you one, but not the other. Thanks!
i read in the specs that it supports Dolby Atmos but you're saying it doesn't. what's the reality?
Turn off 4k upscale, and you get way better pictures on DVD and blu rays with this player, I know cause I have this blu ray 4k Sony player myself
Steve, did you say this player doesn't support dolby atmos? can you please confirm as best buy tech spec shows it does support dolby atmos, hence bit confused
I was reading the specs at the time, rely on current info
@@TechSteve , Thanks Steve for the update
Can this player display the audio CD disc metadata on the TV screen like artist name, song and album title?
on SACD there is probably that information on the disc 😃 plus 5.1 sound in HI-res
@@Andersljungberg Thanks for the info. I don't have SACD so won't be able to test this theory.
What's the best HDMI cable to use for this 4K player?
Any as long as it’s HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 or higher
I've owned mine for quite awhile and still can't see the complete menu screen to fit my TV (too large). Aspect ratio issue just on this device. Sony's customer support is closed due to covid.
Can it play 3d bluray
Is it better than the Sony UBP-x800/M2?
You say it does NOT support Dolby ATMOS? I need ATMOS. One of the formats it say it does support ATMOS so not clear! Thanks!
How would this Sony Blu Rey Player match up with my Toshiba Amazon Fire TV?
tech steve good video. I've been trying to sell a 2 year old 4k panasonic TV at the start of 2021, the number of people who pretend that they don't understand what 4k is therefore it can't be any good
Does it support dolby Atmos?
Yes. Although your AV receiver is what decodes Dolby Atmos, not the player. It just spits out the digital signal from the disc.
But if play thru USB, it wont recognise Atmos files.
I mean the Atmos audio portion won't be recognised.
Yeap. Especially through bitstream. If you have a receiver that supports 3d audio than the player does it no problem
@@Googaliemoogalie thanks
