    What is the deal with Roasted Maple?
    Join us for a guided tour of Spector's lovely (and fragrant!) new RST 5-String bass and find out! Greater stability, resilience to changing weather conditions, oaky nose with persimmon highlights...there are plenty of reasons for roasted maple's sudden ubiquity in the guitar-building world.
    Spector wisely designed this new run of their popular Euro basses around a 3-piece roasted maple neck and then added an all-Aggie electronics package, covered it in a new palette of satin-finish colors and called it a thing!
    Mighty for its weight class (7.2 lbs!), the RST's impression in the mix will far outgun the impression it will leave on your shoulder.

      I think the opposite, the concept and analysis of the video is indeed very good, but the recording quality? Waaaay too muddy, that's not how this bass and the Spectors sound whatsoever which is known for the punchy treebly vibe you can't hear in this recording. I think it has to do with the way he recorded through the amp but anyways as I said you don't get a good sound reference in this video. I would recommend you to check the one in @Basstheworld channel.

    To me it sounds insanely deep with some hi frequency substance but overwhelmed by that thick layer of sub-sound and not containing much of brightness or presence in mid range. Spectors NS series in general are the top notch bass design but somehow I found their sound difficult to fully embrace. I'm speaking this based on various YT clips because I'm also a distant admirer. However, if I'd ever have an opportunity to try one in reality maybe I'll find them pleasing sound wise too. And I must say that your YT clip format is great, you explain stuff quite understandable and I especially admire the infographic content you put on the screen! Cheers!

    I think this is a brilliant idea by Spector. I gather they’re around 7.25lbs, which is insane for a 35” scale 5. I tried one briefly but like you I was struck by the thick, baseball bat neck. Not something I could get on with, sadly, but like all your reviews, you are very thorough and make the bass sound great!

    Hey, Amos! Another fantastic review! I play Spector basses(US models), so this was a real treat! The Euro basses do tend to have chunkier necks, especially compared to their US counterparts and, yeah, roasted maple does have a very nice smell to it, LOL! Great playing, as usual, great observations, awesome graphics. This is pretty much the new standard for excellent gear review videos! I'll watch your vids even if you're reviewing something I have no interest in, LOL! Question: Would you ever consider touring with Spectors, or Dingwalls, or anything besides Fenders?

    I recently gutted my old Ibanez Ergodyne and upgraded it with super doubles and an OB-2 to make a Frakendoom bass. You're right - while the top end was a little too trebly, it had scary huge bass boost. Still, I pivoted and moved the preamp into my wick, which has a much better acoustic tone for the OB's treble freq, and I'm now running the super doubles passive with two volumes and a tone rolloff.
    I'm kind of torn as far as SDs are concerned. They are really high-fi and nuanced, but feel a bit lack luster on a bass without any sort of interesting wood characteristics to draw from. I'd describe the sound as clear and really mid focused. If you keep the neck mostly full and search around with the bridge blend you can find some p-bass grit. The thing I can't stand is that they lack substantial punch compared to single coils or humbuckers, which is weird because they seem to be marketed as a best of both worlds.
    Overall, that bass is mostly a let down. I keep it around because it sounds unique compared to my other stuff. If I had to utilize super doubles on a different project, I'd probably drop a single neck pickup into a custom passive tone wood p-bass type clone. I'm sure it would help a better build sound really interesting.

    Really good review Amos. I like how you do the playthrough with the tone availability and show the knob position at the same time. Good job. I'm considering buying one of these. Like you, I've never tried one. I play a variety of basses like yourself. I'm looking to add some metal vibes to my repertoire. I've tried Warwick Thumb. It's just not balanced well and it's heavy. I don't mind heavy as long as it's balanced. I'm just doing some research on people's thoughts on it. It seems like you generally like this. Do you have any other thoughts?

    What is the string spacing? I know Super Doubles are made for 18-19mm spacing, but this looks like regular Spector 5 tighter spacing. Maybe now that Korg owns both Aguilar and Spector they are doing custom stuff for the bass

    I had the RST 4. Sounded fantastic thru my rig at home. But did not work in my IEMs with the band. Very strange. And could not quell the highs, even fully cut. But you’re not gonna get old school thumpy warm from any spector. They’re just not designed for it. But alone, in the house, thru my GenzBenz/Greenboy….killin.

  • @thejoetandy
    @thejoetandy 2 роки тому +2

    Some combination of the strings/bridge/preamp is adding something tonally I can't get into; but my pretty untrained ear can only narrow it down to those because the pickups are so clear and full of harmonic content. I think maybe a better string set and a different preamp would be perfect for this bass (I personally don't find 40 an appropriate bass frequency to bump or cut most of the time)

    • @AmosHeller
      @AmosHeller  2 роки тому +4

      There is a prominent “voice” to this bass for sure- and anything (or anyone) with a lot of personality isn’t going to be a universal favorite. 40 is a lot of horsepower for sure. Clarity is a big feature of this one- that’s something I’d attribute to the Aguilar setup. Their stuff runs pretty glassy to my ears.

    If you're going to review a guitar or bass you've got to do it on a strap - who on earth gigs in a band whilst sat down?? I had a noodle on one of these yesterday as I was looking for a lightweight 5 string. I left it in the shop because the combination of a chunky neck (which I could get used to) with a very lightweight body meant awful NECK DIVE!! Such a stupid mistake by Spector. Get rid of the chunky neck and they could have a winner, otherwise I see dealers unloading these with a massive discount.
