Ibanez RG2EX1 Review & Demo - My First REAL Electric Guitar!

- I have been on the hunt for my first "real" electric guitar. I sold it years ago and have wanted it back so badly. While this may not be that exact one, it is the same model, same specs and same nostalgic feeling. My first "real" electric guitar was the Ibanez RG2EX1 in ebony. It's a great guitar for the money, that is a non-biased opinion, it's great. They no longer make this model, but you can find them used for a great price! I may make a video detailing the specifics of my original one in hopes of finding it, I would still love to have that one back!

Hey everybody and welcome back to my pink room of doom, as always, I hope you're doing well today! My name is Jonathan and I run the Electric Flamingo channel here on UA-cam, the only and best flamingo themed guitar channel on the platform! Why am I here? Just to have fun, discuss guitars, gear, music and everything in between in the guitar player's world! I have played guitar for almost 15 years at this point, I have recorded music for a little under that, probably about 13 years or so. I am not a professional by any means, but it's all in good fun and I enjoy doing it! I try to include lots of different types of content in my uploads. Skits, reviews, demos, discussions, etc. I'm always open for suggestions as well, so if you have anything you would like to see or hear me talk about, please leave me a comment or contact me on Instagram and I will do my best to fill that request!

Man this was my first guitar! I bought it on my 17th birthday, this was 2008 haha. I've been playing it ever since, I've since put active EMG pickups in it and that's it, everything else is stock.
Nice! It's a solid first guitar, nice to hear it has influenced others as it has myself in the same way!
@Electric.Flamingo It has indeed! It is what made me excited about music! Mine is the jewel blue version with the 3-way toggle. It still plays BEAUTIFULLY! I've owned and played several guitars since I bought that RG, many of which were hundreds of dollars more.. But I honestly still go back to that RG and am amazed at how good it feel and played, in some ways BETTER than most of my other guitars, it's crazy. I think I read once that Ibanez said they stopped making to 2EX1 and 2EX2 model because it was made so well and with so much more attention to detail compared to the price, so they were actually losing money on them lol. Idk if that actually true or not, but I could believe it. Great playing and great channel! I've subbed! Also, it's really cool that you have a midi controller and using it with your playing! I just bought an Akie MPK mini and started learning how to use DAWs and mix different types of music.
Sounds good! First guitars man, I feel this. Hopefully one day, as your channel grows, someone will find your original.
All we can do is hope, my dude!
I'm lucky enough to still have my first guitar, an 03 Epiphone SG I just need to get it shipped from my parents house to hopefully restore it and do some mods! Great video as always dude!
Nice first guitar! Thanks! ⚡️🦩
i like your vibe, I just subscribed
My guy! ⚡️🦩 I appreciate that, thank you!
I bought one new in 08', it played/sounded great, but I (foolishly) always felt self concious playing out with such an entry level piece of gear, I sold it, and after several higher priced guitars, ended up rebuying a used one and after having it again, realized that low end instruments are great if the sounds and tones are what you're looking for and the money saved can be spent on other needed gear
Once you overcome that "affordable gear stigma" it really makes your playing experience that much better. I have much more fun with "cheap" gear than expensive gear most times.
Ayyy I started out on the same guitar, the older ones with the 3 way selector also had "emg designed" pickups. I thought they were surprisingly versatile, they sounded amazing clean and awesome distorted.
Nice! Those "emg" style pickups aren't too shabby either.
Hell yeah man. I did this with my telecaster. It’s not my exact one…though I know who has mine but he WONT SELL IT BACK TO ME!! 🤬🤬😂 So I found one very similar and it’s such a great feeling to have your old friend ❤️🤘🏻
Love that new outtro btw 🔥
That's a bummer. I would pay any reasonable offer for my guitar back. That dude needs to take the money and run...or accept the similar one, that's what I would do. Trade them! lol. Thanks, by the way! ⚡️🦩
@@Electric.Flamingo I tried to offer the one I have in the trade. He was not interested. It’s fine. I have made the new one my own. Changed the pickups for Seymour’s and swapped the pcb switch for a fender rotary one. It’s sounds awesome and it feels the the same. The OG one was called The Grad Tele cause I got it for HS Graduation. The new one is called Greta Lee…like gradtele but…different name lol
That's a bummer, dude. At least you took this one and made it yours! Awesome upgrades!
played bass for a couple years and finally wanted to pick up a guitar, I play mostly hard rock and wanted a guitar that suited that and I found an RGEX1 secondhand! super stoked about it for my first guitar
This guitar will moat definitely suit that! Awesome to hear it's your first guitar, you'll love it! ⚡️🦩
Just paid $230 for the EX2 which I believe is pretty much exactly the same but in white with black binding. Feels like a W.
The white ones are sweet too! Nice score!
Bought 2 of those, paid 35 for one like that. All black and 50 for a gray one with gray quilt vener. Both very good guitars. I up grade one with EMGs and Mad Hatter electronics
Wow. Nice scores!
I have two EX models, an EX1 in Jewel Blue was my first, and an EX2 in white was my second. Both have the IBZ V pickups, they are all factory with one broken tuner, and the blue one still has a factory inspection sticker dated 28-10-08. Likewise, the EX1 was my first intermediate-level guitar right behind my Epiphone Les Paul Standard. After I had the EX1, I picked up the EX2 because I thought it had the Wizard II neck that I enjoyed on the EX1, but it had the III. I decided to keep it anyways because I liked the V series pickups.
I mainly wanted a humbucking hardtail RG because of Mick Thomson, and it's also because my Squier Strat and my Les Paul I had while learning the basics and playing Aerosmith songs were not guitars typically used in that genre of music. Not only did Mick have his Seven Ibanez, but he also used pickups for better distortion control. I hate Seymore Duncan and his pickups, so the best and cheaper alternative to Mick's signature Blackouts was the V series, which fundamentally did the same thing. They were much better than whatever Ibanez brand comes in the GIO series.
Nice. At least you know what you were looking for in terms of sound and everything and were able to achieve it! I've always liked the EX2, but have never played one, I feel like it is basically the same as the EX1. I've owned an EX3 before and that was cool. I've considered picking up an EX5 with the Floyd on it because they just look so cool with the reverse headstock!
@Electric Flamingo Yes, except for their neck profile, the EX2 and the EX1 are the same. Both have V series, 5-way switches, RG bodies, and Wizard necks. I wish I had a reversed headstock Ibanez because it would have matched Mick's guitars, but I didn't have the money for one and didn't bother switching a reversed neck onto my EX. I can't remember the model, but I also had an RG with the Edge III tremolo. I wasn't too fond of it and sold it sometime later because it wasn't what I was looking for, it was before I found the EX models.
Just got one for $100 with Sperzel locking tuners and a Dimarzio D Activator. Had to file down most of the frets though.
Nice deal!
Everybody remembers their first. Mine was a black and white Squire Telecaster. I called it the beast. I modified it to have a hot rail and a new nut to play in drop A. I so miss that guitar , but it got ganked after a show in Tampa. The next day I bought my first Ibanez. A RG 7620 7 String in Vampire Kiss. Best Guitar I ever owned.
Nice! I hate that that happened to it! I've considered getting myself an Ibanez 7, just everytime one comes up, they are gone!
@@Electric.Flamingo The 7620 was nice. Had a Genuine Floyd Rose and Custom Dimarzio's pickups. You can get them pretty reasonable when they do come up on reverb. The Vampire Kiss is just a rare color because it was created for Munky From Korn and was like only 1000 made.
Really? Might have to keep my eye out for those. I have another model in mind, the RGEW521ZC that comes with the Air Norton/Tone Zone combo that I want to get at some point!
I’m cracking up I have had many rg models in my time snd I’m 58 years old now I got this axe today I’m telling you snag one if you can it plays like a premium I got the blue one 2007 it DRIPS WITH MOJO These emg passive pups kill with my Stevie t plug in 😂 good advice
They are quite the hidden gem. ⚡️🦩
I have a 2011 RG2EX1. I hate the V7/V8 pickups but after some upgrades it screams.
If they are the "EMG" looking ones, I agree, they are pretty low output, in my opinion, for an Ibanez.
Paid 150. ……Score
