I am a traveling musician, the best thing I've ever seen was TC Helicon the white version voice harmonizer with over 200 guitar and effects + settings all together in one machine. I can't imagine carrying different pedals for every single effect. :))

If i had to pick one pedal for acoustic guitar, it will always be a looper pedal. Not only is it a great practice tool, but once you get the hang of it, you can make full blown songs with one guitar.

Agree. I just bought a Boss RC-5 and it's fantastic. Audio quality is Pristine. I also use the FS-6 (with-it) which is a Must-have.

I have the RC-3, and yes, the external footswitch is a must have for it. No more doing that awkward double tap in time to stop the loop.

Just wanted to add something that I've never heard before: guitar exposes our emotional issues. I have recently embraced guitar as meditation, but this is antithetical to my initial experience with guitar education.
When I started learning I was determined to master the guitar through hours of daily practice. I struggled with anger and impatience. I didn't feel like I got better and became increasingly frustrated with the pace of my progress. This turned out to be an indicator of disordered, overly critical self-talk. I finally realized that this problem was sabotaging my entire life. I am now more focused on fixing my toxic internal dialogue, and guitar helps maintain that focus. The breakthrough came in my second year of TAC.
I subscribed to TAC and stuck with it for 3 months, then I dropped it. I renewed and finally fell into a guitar hole when I just closed my eyes and played the daily exercises over and over. I try to increase speed little by little, but reel it back if it creates tension and anxiety. This results in more, not less, progress.
I love that the guitar is a portal to relaxation and focus now, instead of frustration and anxiety.

I’m with you on most of these. I personally find tremolo quite unpleasant though. One other effect that I use a lot for solo acoustic gigs is the Electroharmonix MEL09 melotron simulator. The ability to adjust attack & sustain allows you to have a string pad behind your guitar that swells up as the chords sustain.

Thanks, Tony. I just bought my first pedal, the EHX 720 Stereo Looper because of the two separate foot switches for start and stop, probably running through the Vox Mini3 G2 modeling amp. A little analog delay from this amp sounds sweet with both acoustic (Taylor Academy 12e and Breedlove Pursuit Exotic Concert E) and electric Ibanez Artcore AS73FM. I'm looking forward to trying out the Cole Clark Angel 2EC-RDBL soon!
I bought the Tony Polecastro edition G7th ART3 capo demo from Sweetwater, or should we just say that you are the star reviewer on the cover? Grins from Coeur d'Alene and Missoula! My son in law took the Gibson factory tour, and must have asked good questions, since they offered him a job on his way out. He figured it would be better to finish his schooling at Montana State University, a good call. He plays a Breedlove Atlas, and a Hummingbird is his dream guitar. (What about the Songwriter, or the Sheryl Crow Country & Western?)

What?? No looper? When I bother to use pedals the first in the chain is the Fishman Aura sixteen, the second is an octaver, the third is a looper.I also have a noise gate for my cheapo Squier telecaster which is very noise prone, but the star is the looper such a great practice tool...........................................

might mention that if you're getting an amp you can get some of this effects with the amp although maybe without as much adjustability. I'm about to get a Blackstar that has chorus and reverb included.

The risk by using fuzz or distortion on acoustics is the feedback.
Also, piezo pickups react dirty and not so good as the electrics.
If you have a magnetic pickup sounds better.
One of the solutions for using dist/OD is the Fender Smolder Acoustic OD.

I need to find a video on how to use them..as in how are they connected to an acoustic guitar?🤔

  • @Wantar

I've never had acoustic guitar. I had, and still have, my classical guitar since I finished primary musical school, here in Europe. Since my parents didn't want to buy me electric and I was bored with classical guitar music (just search for Fernando Sor), but it was a no go. So I threw my guitar in the closet for 30 years (back in 1992).
Last year I bought my first electric guitar (Yamaha Pacifica 112V), my little Fender amp and several chinese pedals (and yes, they work perfectly and even my friend which has expensive pedals says he can't hear much difference between them).
This Christmas I will get acoustic guitar and considering I have several pedals (Chorus, Delay, Looper/Tuner, Overdrive, Noise Gate, Distortion and Fuzz/Boost) I wanted to see if I will be able to use those pedals. I don't need Distortion on my acoustic since I have electric guitar, but being able to use delay, reverb and chorus will be nice. :)
Thanks for the instructional video. :)

Certainly enjoyed your effects reviews. I have fallen for a Boss VE-8:acoustic voice effects pedal.. I am not a vocalist but I have had so much fun with this. It creates harmony and actually improves the quality of my voice (or at least my biased husband says so lol) it also has a looper and chorus/delay/reverb for the guitar. Pricey but it is like a multi pedal in one.

I have a nice... "Why I'm finally sticking with it this time" story if you are interested.... When I was 17, (in 1981) I scraped together $220 and bought a 1972 (!) Telecaster Thinline guitar.. (because it looked like the blonde Tele that my guitar hero Keith Richards played)... I was making $3.15 an hour at the time, loading heavy bags of rocks and soil and bark into people's cars at my local Landscape nursery... so $220 was a LOT of money.. I proceeded to spend 30 years "trying" to play it, always getting frustrated, peaking, and quitting for months or years, only to pick it up again in our fruitless love-hate relationship...
In 2012, on a Tuesday at 4:00 pm, an electrical fire started in my kid's bedroom. I ran downstairs, freaking out, trying to fight the fire - to no avail.. as I ran out from the erupting flames (it went total 'Backdraft' on me...) all I wanted to do was run upstairs (?!) and try to save my stupid guitar...
WHY?? WTF?! It took me a while to realize that I had deep regrets that I had never actually 'tried' to learn how to play it. I hadn't committed. I never spent the time, and focused. I just wished it would happen... Well guess what... it won't.
It's been over 10 years now- I have several great new guitars, I am in a great band, I gig out regularly, and am having more fun than I ever deserved. I am constantly challenged, I learn every day, and I LOVE learning to play the guitar. There is no end - no one is good enough. The guitar can never be mastered, only loved, and explored, and interacted with. Making music for people to dance to, and sing along with is the most fun I have ever had, or ever will. RIP '72 Tele.... miss ya...

Hey Tone, I enjoyed your video and was or am impress by most of the effect devices.
However, I'm kinda wondering if a player wanted all these effects why not just buy an electric guitar? Please, don't say you want the acoustic sound, but with the effects too, because some of these electric guitar makers will and have claimed their guitars can sound acoustic.
Isn't all this effect stuff going against the beauty, novelty, and convenience (i.e. no cables, amps, etc) of acoustic guitars namely the sound and the challenge of creating beautiful music on an acoustic?

I always play with reverb on. Once in a while, I'll add a tremolo or chorus pedal. I like to keep it simple.

Andrew Huang did a video on that weird japanese thing. ua-cam.com/video/1JP2nAoRgl0/v-deo.html It's a Taishokoto or a Nagoya harp. Rob Scallon played a similar instrument called the Shahi Baaja here: ua-cam.com/video/0rIkyKJiXhg/v-deo.html

Excluding reverb, pedals on acoustic guitar just doesn't work for me. I guess it's the very organic nature to the acoustic tone that I don't want to colour or make less organic. I'm not sure that even makes sense, but I know what I mean 🙂
