It's time for another plane - mitre plane. Beech wood and an old laminated blade by Ferdinand RUBENS. At first i wanted to build another strike block plane (bevel down), but i changed my mind to set the blade bevel up - it is nice chance to show you difference beetwen that two kind of planes. Strike block plane have cutting angle below 40 deg - the same as the bed because the bevel is down. This is perfect plane for planing / strike endgrain. The blade in mitre planes is set bevel up on the bed (20-30 deg). The cutting angle is amount of the bed angle and the blade bevel. It can be easly changed by regrinding the blade bevel. At the end of the video i'll show you how my mitre plane reduce tearout and why strike block plane is better for work with endgrain. The plane is equipped with a mouth closer - simple wedge in front of the blade. The sole will be worn out after some time and the mouth will be open. To close them again the mouth closer should be fitted a little bit deeper. That's all. Brilliant solution wich was born few ages ago. I hope you still like my "old style" of the videos :) Cheers
I will absolutely never get tired of watching your planemaking videos, especially if they’re of planes I want to make, even when sped up they give lots of information. I will also never get tired of seeing the lovely reflective speckles of quartersawn beech
I have watched a bunch of how to make wood planes videos because that is some thing I want to do eventually. It never ceases to amaze me that so many have no clue as to why you angled your cut out to get the better grain alignment rather than just cutting a piece off of the block you started with......
Thx, a very nice explanation of the difference between bevel up and down for this plane. You have an excellent plane building craft (and experience). Very nice to see and learn from👌
Breathtaking precision achieved with a small kit of mostly hand tools 3D thinking and patience. A reminder of how "old fashioned" technology is capable of anything CNC technology can do without huge monetary investment. Thank you!
Bravo, Stavros! Another video, another exquisite plane build. I never tire of watching your woodworking artistry. And btw, I never tire of your “old style” videos. You are THE BEST, my friend.
Not all planes are created equal! You planes are above the so called masters of wooden planes. With all of the fancy shops some of these “masters” have, why do they turn out crappy planes. I would love to see what you could do in their shops with their equipment. Maybe the world isn’t ready! Another spectacular job!
interesting! thanks a lot, especially the demonstration of why the bevel up plane tackles tearout well, but the strike plane is better for end grain. I also liked the use of soot to mark where to flatten the bed for the iron, great idea.
This is my favorite "no talking" woodworking video! You are a master Craftsman! The subtleties in techniques and processes that you captured were enthralling! I couldn't look away! I've been a woodworker for a long time and I feel like I just attended a graduate school class. I'm going to be addicted to your channel!
I am watching your video again, you know an excellent hand work shows that there is perfect coordination of mind, eyes and hands. And you have it. Regards and best wishes.
That was a fascinating comparison at the end there ... and up pops that gorgeous spalted beech again! I know its a niche audience on UA-cam but you make the best videos of this type. Thanks for taking the time to film your work Stavros, it really is a pleasure to behold. 👍
Never tire of watching you work, love the homemade scrapers and floats would love more info on sharpening and the tools that you use, I just love your old hacksaw xxx
being a poor woodworker you can neither buy nor build ur tools. sad wish i had some decent tools to start making more. anyway, so far u re the best when it comes to hand tools Sir. truly stunning work u did there.
I'm almost finished making my first mitre plane that i have been making for about 3 mouth working on it on my lunch break at work for about 15 to 20 minutes a day , I work as a joiner in a joiner's shop so i have every thing i need to make one
absolutely love it. my passion in woodworking is also tool making though i have not yet graduated to making planes of this quality. when i get finished with some of my backlog projects i will start a series of planes myself. that said i never tire of watching your work. your builds are instructive and calming at the same time. you truely capture the 'zen' essence of being a maker in your videos. thank you for the inspiration.
next time when someone tell me that make a wooden japanese hand plane is not easy I'll show them this video lol unbelievable amount of work done excellent!
A bientôt.
Your skill surpasses those of the manufacturing of planes. As a long time follower of your channel, it never ceases to amaze me to see and watch a true master craftsman at work. I've always enjoyed the quality of work you put into your planes. Thank you. Cheers :)
Of course we still like your "old style" of videos Stavros 😁 this plane is beautiful, and the ray fleck in the grain is amazing. And as usual; it performs just as well as it looks 🤙 Nice one Stavros, I enjoyed this a lot 😁
Keep em coming, great video’s too watch and learn about different plane types. I also am inspired to start making and restoring some for myself! So thank you for shating!
Thank you Stavros. Beautiful work as usual. I am going to be setting up a permanent shop again soon and will be sharing the work with you as it is finished. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Greetings from the high plains of Texas.
That's a lovely plane, Stavros. Again. I prefer these planer planes, without contrasting timbers. However, your little comparison at the end wasn't fair at all. The Bailey -pattern plane at the end was set to take very coarse shavings. If you set it to take the same thickness shavings as your woodie, and if you set the cap iron very close to the cutting edge, you could easily achieve comparably impressive results. You don't need to make your brilliant planes look better by making other planes look bad.
I am Really going to in joy this .No bl*ody dove tails lol .that I spent a whole week cutting 😆 at 14.26 in to the video. Man I had to close my eyes 😬 loved every minute of it

This man has me obsessively researching plane making. These videos are so fun to watch i think I’m going to try it myself!

You should go for it. 👍 It's a wonderful sense of achievement.
