Sooooo, hello my Friends!!! It's been 6 months since i upload my last video. I didn't expect that my break in planemaking will be so long. At this moment finally i can say - yes, i'm back! In today's episode i'm gonna make something special - classic strike block plane with intermittent boxing. The plane is purposed to work on the engrain surface. As you know endgrain surface of the wood is the most durable for friction, so the sole of wooden plane can be damage quickly. Because of that i'm gonna use small pieces of boxwood, and glue them into the sole of the plane. Notice the grain direction of the boxing, they will be perpendicular to the sole, that detail will keep durable of the sole for years of using. For this project i'm gonna use: - piece of smoked black locust for the body - log of boxwood for the wedge and the boxing - padauk and maple veneer inlay (just for fun) - my hand tools - my hands - my head ;) I hope you like how the plane will works! At the end of the video i got small surprise for you :) Thank you! If you have any questions or sugestions just write a comment. Enjoy! Btw. Sometimes you asked me about plans of my planes, but i'm really sorry, i have them only in my head.. Maybe some day i'll put them on the paper or digital version. Today i don't have a time for it.
Very beautiful as always!!! I'm glad to see you're putting videos out again and looking forward to your next one!!!!! I had just looked yesterday if I had missed a video. I knew the last one I seen you had hurt yourself and was concerned that it might have gotten worst
I was going to say that's a beautiful plane that I'd love to have/make one day and now all I have to say is all my Christmases have come at once this year,. Bardzo dziękuję Stavros.
Congratulations Andrew .... I am almost jealous. At least I was able to witness this master put his mark on it and then create this beautiful piece of art. Cherish it forever!
Beyond my absolute fascination with the layout of these works of functional art, I love that you do not mask the sound of construction with a soundtrack. Nothing more soothing that listening to tool maker/woodworker making hand tools "sing". THANK YOU!
Yes! I can't stand video makers who need to talk every single minute in a half hour long video. I love when Stavros gives us all the information written on wood.
I love this guy. I have been waiting for more of these videos since he moved. I am completely fascinated by someone who actually makes them by hand, even the uncommon planes. Awesome stuff man. Thanks for putting in all the hard work.
A bientôt.
Love the saw/rasp cutter things you have. Also, never thought of making a scraper out of an old chisel..... Might have to try that some time. I do plan to make my own wood hand planes eventually. I do have a LOT of wood..... Wood-Aholic anonymous.....
An absolute artist. I love your videos. Just bought an old derelict wooden plane today. Going to try using the iron to make a plane. You have inspired me.
I’m watching your videos for the second time. I don’t know how I missed mentioning the view of the shop the first time around. It’s nice to see the shop. Beautiful work as always. Thanks for sharing your work and art.
Welcome back! How I have missed your your wonderful videos! I hope that you're nicely settled into your new home and workshop. Wishing you all the best!
Wow, nice shop. definitely an upgrade. Another beautiful plane. I like all the specialty tools you made for plane making. Really fool and inspring. Thanks kindly
Lovely work. Thanks you and Mr. Carter’s inspiration I have made my first plane, a jointer. It is far from perfect but does work well. Now on to other tools and more planes. There should be time. I am a young 76.
Glad to see you back, Stavros! Do hope you are enjoying your new home and workshop. Once again your work is superb and I really enjoy watching you execute your skills to produce another excellent plane!
u can use masking tape/painters tape or a knife line to prevent the backside of a sawcut from blowing out. honestly ever plane this guy makes in a piece of art. amazing work
So glad to see you're back at it. I'm fascinated by user made tools. I hope to one day begin crafting my own planes. I will love to see you create a website to organize your videos and also write up information on angles, how to select wood blanks, grain orientations etc. Would be a great help to those of us who aspire to craft traditional tools.
Dla mnie jesteś Mistrzem świata w struganiu strugów ;) Przypadkowo trafiłem na Twój film, ale nie bylem w stanie się oderwać. Gratuluję zdolności manualnych no i oczywiście pomysłów na nowe projekty. Sam zaczynam swoją przygodę ze stolarstwem od kilku lat. Uczę się powoli głównie z internetu przelewając swoje pomysły na amatorskie projekty. Twój kanał będzie pod moja baczną uwagą. Pozdrawiam i życzę dużo sukcesów.
I’m so happy you are posting again. I hope the time away was good for you and your family. I look forward to your next post. Your work is excellent, and the video format is superb. Thank you from the US.
I can clearly see that the strike block plane works very well on endgrain, there’s no question there. My question is why is it so good? Should a shooting plane also have a strike block? I know I use my shooting board for end grain most of the time.
Hey, the answer is simple - the cutting angle is extremely low. The construction of metal low angles planes allows to get the lowest cutting angle about 37 deegrees (bed 12 plus bevel 25). In wooden strike block planes the blade is bevel down, so the cutting angle is the same as the bed. My shooting plane is strike block plane with 33 deg bed and the bed is paralel, so the real cutting angle is about 32 deg. 5 deg makes the difference 🙂
I LOVE your planes! They are works of art and yet can slice into the hardest of woods and make whisper thin shavings. You should enter in the yearly contest in Japan to see who can make a plane that makes the longest & intact shaving. I'd bet on you to win.!! Someday your planes will become a highly collectible item to own. Have you ever thought of selling them?
Now that i've watched, what/why that ?hot? glue to fit the inserts...and not the regular white woodglue like you used on the veneers of the inserts?... your craftsmanship is admirable ...and that magic fingersnap, wow man i think you've perfected it ! smile smile...

All the best for you :)
I’m definitely going to try the spline trick! You know just for fun! Look great!
What angle is the iron mounted at?
35 deg bed and 10 deg skew
I was going to say that's a beautiful plane that I'd love to have/make one day and now all I have to say is all my Christmases have come at once this year,. Bardzo dziękuję Stavros.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I'm envious! Congratulations, Andrew!
Lucky dude! Enjoy that masterpiece;

Beautiful design and craftsmanship.
