    When Larry’s shots fall dead center in the hoop and the net barely moves as the ball falls through… that is a thing of beauty.

      That's called hitting the bottom of the net.

      I’m 45, back when I was 13, my uncle took me to a Celtic’s game. My family is NY. I don’t need to say any more! Yanks, Giants, rangers and St John’s. At 13, I watched that man put on a jumper clinic! Right and left handed! He scored 46 and didn’t play the 4th quarter!

    I saw this play LIVE, in 1987. Mychal Thomson FOULED Bird as well, hitting his shooting hand/arm...and Bird STILL hit the shot! Look at the way Worthy covered Bird, holding him aggressively, practically terrified Larry will hit the shot...and he did. Lebron James, nor anyone in today's game has done anything remotely like this. And Larry Bird TOLD them the play. Let that sink in, folks.

      LeBrainless sucks and wouldn't last a season playing in the 80's thru the Bad Boys Era in the 90's. MJ, The Goat got mauled back then and is still the Greatest...it was like 5 man football during the playoffs back then. Remember McHale The Biggest "Softie" in the League Clotheslining Rambis??? The was Hilarious and frightening at the same time. The Current NBA Pansies in Pigtails and Tights wouldn't last a season back then let alone become HOF'ers and play more than ten years talking all those beatings.

    To fully appreciate how crazy this story is you need to understand how great a player James Worthy was. First pick of the first round of the NBA draft as a college junior by the reigning Champs, NBA Hall of Fame, and NBA Finals MVP, Worthy was a beast. He tells this story the best, "Fuuu q!"

      You’re right. Big Game James was often considered the third best star on that team, but when they other two are arguably the best to play their respective positions, you realize why he gets forgotten at times. To me, there was no better player out on the fastbreak in the history of basketball. He had speed and intelligence and timing. He was awesome.

    Larry was only loud enough usually for the person he was talking to to hear. He didn't yell or pound his chest because he didn't have to. His trash talk was psychological warfare and he viewed it as part of the game. Winning was everything.

    Acronym "SHIT" = "S"hip "H"igh "I"n "T"ransport. This acronym came out of old England back when "goods" were transported by sailing ships..and "MANURE" was a commodity transported by sailing ship...they hung the bags of manure from the ceilings and walls to keep the manure dry. .

    It's a common what if question but what if Bird hadn't messed up his index finger of his shooting hand playing softball the summer before starting in the NBA? He played his entire career without quite the dexterity and flexibility he had in college due to his messed up finger. How much better would his scoring have been without that finger injury to overcome? His career was a joy to watch while it was happening and I didn't even really like watching much basketball at the time but I did try to catch the Celtics games when they were on in my area's TV market.

      Up until even now I said this before there's only two guys in the NBA I would actually pay to see Michael Jordan and Larry Bird in my opinion the two greatest players who ever lived. No matter what people say LeBron James is not in their category in their Prime as overall player. He is second teir with players like Kobe Bryant Shaquille O'Neal Charles Barkley and so on.

    If you look closely, a lot of those shots he has 1 or 2 guys in his face, hands up in the air, seemingly right in the trajectory line of the ball as it gets thrown - yet the ball travels and makes the net as if they weren’t even there.
    Was Larry Bird a wizard?

    He told you the play. Ainge was slightly open for a 2. Why would you leave Bird to double Ainge? Face guard Bird the entire time he would have never gotten that shot. Worthy left him--he was wide open.

    Loved Larry! He's the reason I started playing ball when I was a kid. Man, me and my friends played basketball everyday! I lived across the street from a park. In the winter I'd shovel off the court so we could play. I played everyday and got really good. Larry, Magic, Kareem, McHale, Parish, DJ, Ainge, and KC Jones and Red Aurebach. That was the best starting lineup ever. I loved Gerald Henderson , Scott Wedman, and even Greg Kite!! Lol. The best basketball ever. Now I think Stephen Curry is the best closest player to bird. As far as shooting. Bird was slow but he barely missed. Curry can drain the shot from anywhere on the court. I bet you Curry would sink 80% or 90% of his shots if he took 10 shots from half court. He's just lethal. Anyway, Bird was just like Tom Brady, slow and thin and lanky but his basketball iq was off the charts like Bradys football iq is insane.

    Larry is an all time 1st team nba starter, along with MJ, Magic, Lebron and Kareem. Still, you can produce 4 or 5 other teams that can take them to a final 7th game in a series. Thats how good the nba is and thats why the 2nd best country in basketball gets beat by 50 points if the nba players wanted to

    For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play.
    Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot, thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year in his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced also the three point shot was viewed by most as a gimmick. Bird used it as a strategic weapon to end a game. Food for thought.
    At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go:
    Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics:
    Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88);
    All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88);
    Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012).
    Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons.
    Career averages:
    24.3 points per game
    10.0 rebounds per game
    6.3 assists per game
    88.6% free throw percentage
    49.6% field goal percentage
    37.6% 3-point percentage
    If you need more proof, just look up the February 14, 1985 game Celtics vs. Jazz where Larry Bird was one steal away in the third quarter from being the second ever quadruple double in league history but he wold have been the first to record one in regulation play. The first one was recorded in Bulls vs. Hawks in O.T. October 18, 1974 that is Nate Thurmond,
    Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season. The final thing most are unaware of Larry Bird played with threats against his life.
