Can we all take a moment to appreciate soy sauce and how it makes every dish better?
or nutritional yeast, ha!
A lot of Indian cooking is Vegetarian which can be easily be made vegan. One should try out such Indian recipes and adjust such recipes spices accordingly. I can link a few if anyone needs em
I would love to see them!
I've tried vegan chaat, oh man I think more people need to get on this! Also south Indian food is rarely represented in American media and it is SO easy to make it vegan
I absolutely love Indian food, but its always given me a tummy ache. I think it might be all the spices. If you have any links im willing to try.
Ari Saric it might be because you’re not eating authentic Indian food. Lots of our home cooked food has a good mix of spices but we use less oil and less pungent spices when cooking at home
dumbbrowngirl might be, do you have any recipes i can try?
I was a pescatarian for a 2 years, then a vegetarian until the country shutdown in March, and then I became a full vegan with no regrets. 😀. Thank you sharing your ideals.
Nice work!! 👍
@Laura Athmejvar great choice! 😊
Same scenario here. That what I did too.
I have been vegan for 13 years... why am I watching this 😂👏🏼
Anything you'd add to the list? This is a good guide, but it didn't mention some things non-vegans probably also have on hand, like various spices, baking basics, etc.
@@1998tkhri exactly! although i have been vegetarian and now vegan for so long im still learning about things like this
That's great, hopefully I am still vegan in 13 years time been vegan for 3 years so far.
Because you're not really vegan. You just like virtue signaling.
ua-cam.com/video/QNOm4QOfZck/v-deo.html
Been vegan for 7ish years. This is definitely accurate.
Not sure where I'd be without nooch TBH
You haven't been vegan for any years. No need to lie for likes.
@@janieswanson2549 How so? What have I done that is not vegan? Don't even care about likes, tbh.
@@1998tkhri Electronics like smart phones, computers, routers, and servers contain animal products.
Specifically tallow and gelatin.
You used animal products just to reply to me.
Vegan (noun) - a person who does not eat or use animal products.
There you go. No need to continue lying.
@@janieswanson2549 Yeah, they do. I tend to hold two simultaneous definitions of veganism. One is a product that does not contain animal products. The other is that of the Vegan Society, (I won't quote it, you can look it up) which is more focused on not contributing to the demand for more animal products. So, if you were to already have something from before you were vegan, using it for something positive seems more vegan than letting an animal's life go to waste. If you don't want to call me vegan because I use a laptop I purchased before going vegan, so be it, but know that you are in the minority.
I am thinking about going vegan or at least incoperating more vegan meals so this video is really helpful - thank you !
Update november: i'm vegan now yall can stop arguing
Yes!! Remember you don’t have to be 100% vegan but it’s good to try and eat vegan when you can.
Check out our recipes for more ideas😁
@CarrotShaker I agree that something is better than nothing. But when I was going vegan, at least, I'm not sure I would have been able to do it if I told myself: from this day forward you can't eat any animal products. So I think that it is possible being mostly vegan. By the way, thank you for being polite about it unlike some other internet vegans :)
CarrotShaker I was implying that you should try to eat vegan foods when you can, that doesn’t make you vegan but it makes you more plant based.
@CarrotShaker I'm actually a vegeterian and am also trying to cut out dairy but thanks for your concern lol.
This is what bothers me the most. I cannot do my part in trying to live more vegan without getting comments like this. In my opinion doing SOMETHING is better than doing nothing and I appreciate Ryans comment bc it made me feel like I am on the right path. Your comment however made me feel like that even if I am trying out more vegan meals it would be better if I either did nothing at all or became a hardcore vegan way in one day.
The day AFTER I go shopping to buy ingredients you post this?! The universe must be laughing right now.
I've been vegan for 10 years, and this is the best video on vegan pantry I've ever seen. Beautiful food and so many great tips. A few things not mentioned that are a must for me are miso, sunflower seeds, soy curls, and soy milk. I use the soy milk when I culture my own yogurt. I'm so glad I found your channel. Congratulations @rachelgaewski, Leila, and Alberto on a beautiful job.
Why lie about being vegan?
Janie Swanson if you are referring to the animal products used in phones and computers, it is entirely possible that this persons phone is a hand me down or they are using someone else’s phone which, though not technically “vegan” by some definitions, definitely isn’t harming animals or the earth. And if they are vegan for their own health, it definitely isn’t affecting that. Maybe you are a grammar Nazi “um, actually” type person, if so you must live a tortured existence because everything is a spectrum and no one is one hundred percent of anything. For instance, someone calling themselves an introvert even though they occasionally enjoy a party. I would say that someone leaning strongly towards introversion has the right to call themselves an introvert, even if it isn’t an exact description, because there simply isn’t a word to describe every “shade of gray” on the spectrum, so I speak. It’s the same way that some can call themselves a vegan because there simply isn’t a word to describe being a vegan who uses a phone (and they may not know that phones contain animal products). Someone who is vegan is still sacrificing for their beliefs and trying to better themselves or the world, and I respect that a thousand times more than someone who likes to justify their own complacency by nitpicking the actions of others.
@@mathildataufmann9363 It doesn't matter when, where, who, or if it was bought by the person. It only matters if they "use" it.
Vegan (noun) - a person who "DOES NOT" eat or "USE" animal products.
The definition doesn't care where the animal products came from.
You also conveniently left out all of the animal products they use just to leave a comment on youtube. Connecting to youtube requires routers and servers that are possible and practicable to avoid.
So they are not vegan technically, literally, or factually.
@@janieswanson2549 are you saying I am not a vegan? Do you know me?Vegan Society definition of veganism: "A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals." I believe veganism is a journey, and we can all do our best very day.
@@dianasalter1386 The vegan society definition of vegan is "Vegan (noun) - a person who does not eat or use animal products."
You quoted the veganism doctrine which is a doctrine about a lifestyle and not the definition of a person.
"The word veganism shall mean the doctrine that man should live without exploiting animals." - Leslie Cross founding member of the vegan society.
But sure....lets talk about the doctrine of veganism, more specifically the "possible and practicable" part.
Is it possible and practicable to stop posting replies on youtube using routers and servers (which contain animal products) needlessly?
Yes...it sure is possible and practicable to avoid using those animal products.
So you're not vegan by the vegan societies definition of the word "vegan" and you don't follow their doctrine about a lifestyle called "veganism."
Are you so tied up in your lie that you believe a lifestyle is a person?
Anything else liar?
Tortillas (corn, flour) are a great option for preparing almost any Mexican dish: tacos, enchiladas, tostadas, as well as lot of Tex-Mex dishes: Burritos, nachos, etc.
Burritos, nachos are mexican burritos are from juarez , nachos from coahuila :') just a different style not as the authentic.
This was a lot of work put in the video
I was thinking the same thing OMG all the dishes that were made in this video O.o
The dishes made are from previous Goodful videos
As a vegan of 6 years and getting comfortable with making just a few dishes, this is so inspiring! Can’t wait to start making new foods
You're not vegan.
Janie Swanson damn I see you responding to everyone’s comments like you know them personally? Can you shut it?
@@georgia6432 I don't know them personally. I just know they are lying about being vegan.
Janie Swanson how
@@Kabwuspfiejanxnfhsk Use your words. How what?
This was so amazing and helpful. I don’t know if I can commit 100% yet but I have been vegetarian for almost 9 months and I don’t drink milk anymore unless it’s in a food that I have some other place. Eggs only in food as well. And no more leather. I am doing my best for a teen :)))
that's so amazing! i'm so proud of you
Yes! I remember wanting to vegan as a teen and still living under your parents. Keep it up! Going vegan was the best decision I ever made 🌱💚
I'm a teen as well, and I was finally able to make the switch in September of 2020. I strongly suggest making a case and being ready to answer questions about nutrients and meal-making.
Eggs are healthy af. You are not missing out.
@@jrbd6622 The egg industry grinds up and gasses male chicks because they don't grow as big as females and don't produce eggs. That's why I don't eat eggs.
This channel is gold! It's promoting the vegan lifestyle in such a nice way. I am not a vegan or a vegeterian but I really cut down meat and dairy in my diet and mostly buy organic meat &dairy. and I just love to get more inspiration for a more sustainable lifestyle. I just think that we all can make a little difference just by eating more plant based.
That video was so helpful! I'm trying to become vegan but I'm having trouble with making vegan dishes because I don't have all the ingredients in my pantry. I like how you divided the ingredients in categories too. Could you perhaps do a video about how to get all the necessary nutrients when we're in a vegan diet? Thank you
They just posted one with a nutritionist a few weeks ago!
Well this doesn't specifically answer your question but if you look up "reddit vegan" they're a great community. They post a lot of recipes and tips and support.
A bit unfortunately they also post a lot of anti-meat-eating content which can push some people away, but i understand thatthey do it because they just feel so strongly about all of this suffering and they need to help make it stop
@@fionam5879 Thank you, I think I saw it on my youtube feed. I will check it out.
@@drea409 why would a vegan community be pro-meat eating lol. we're all vegan for the animals, there's nothing unfortunate about being passionate about saving lives
@@riceismyname5491 i think they mean like vegan jokes and jokes and memes about meat eaters hypocrisy. That it might push away new vegans or people trying to go vegan. They might think that vegans are "extreme" and rude "rude". I dont think they mean it should be pro-meat eating.
Its not a pantry item, but lots of greens! I hardly used to eat leafy greens before making the switch and now I crave them. (Spinach, kale, arugula, collards, etc). Sneaking them into smoothies or on a sandwich or even using them to make lettuce wraps. Such a wonderful way to get some extra vitamins& minerals and contribute to a balanced diet!
Most Turkish dishes can be veganized so easily, I recommend trying chickpeas with rice pilav, beans with rice pilav, delicious 😋😋
I have been a vegan for years. This is, easily, one of the most useful videos on vegan recipes I've ever seen. There is so much information packed in here. What a good resource to look back on.
I just became vegan two weeks ago after writing a paper for class and I’ve been eating mainly potatoes and impossible beef so this is really nice!! Also if anyone has any tips I’d love that🥺
A lot of good examples in the video that you can veganize lots of stuff you used to eat - lentils for ground meat, fried tofu instead of cold cuts, adding beans to soups/stews/salads...
Hii ! So i am not a vegan but I am trying to incoperate more vegan meals and what really helps me in finding new meals to try out is following different pages on IG! Just look up the hashtag 'veganfood' and you'll find loads of recipes.
The sauce tip in this video is super helpful. With a lot of vegan stuff, you can marinate it in sauce, cook it, and you have as many meals as you have sauces! esp true for tofu. My fav has got to be thai peanut sauce with sriracha :))
Lentils and beans. I didnt think those would be helpful until I transitioned to vegan lifestyle a month ago. You can basically put those in any meals. For me, I have been adding lentils to brown rice to add some protein since some days I dont want to cook some tofu, it does help. Also, please dont be afraid to buy some canned beans and frozen veggies. I'm not sure if this would be much of a help, but good luck on your journey! :)
You can watch pick up limes channel she has a lot of good vegan tips and tricks
I loved the list. My staples are lentils, legumes, veggies and lots and lots of fruits!!!
The main secret to a tasty vegan meal is the seasoning. I love spicy food and i try to make it as colourful as possible with variety.
I loved not only how helpful this video is but also seeing that you use recycled glass jar to storage your things, I do the same but sometimes I get freaked out because of the different shapes and colors of the jars but then I remember that it is for a good cause!!
Nutritional yeast is definitely ESSENTIAL 😍😋
Thank you for the helpful info for newcomers!
Did you just-
This is awesome, thank you so much. I have a partner and three kids with Autism, We want to try more vegan options but struggle due to their severe food aversions. I am still learning about how to use vegan foods so this video is an absolute blessing.
My son is also autistic and has food aversions. I haven't even thought about altering his diet because of how limited his diet is right now.
@@Lemons19902010I am working with a kids dietician who specialises in Autism and fussy eating. We're not really working on what my kids eat, more so the routines and messages around food in the family and it has naturally allowed for a little more experimentation. There's a book called Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating which I found really helpful
This too could help :) ua-cam.com/video/QNOm4QOfZck/v-deo.html
I am an autistic vegan. So I sympathize with your struggle. One thing I do is take a multivitamin every day. That helps make up for any inadequacies in my diet. I also like to "hide" veggies in recipes. I made a baked bean sort of deal in my Instant pot. It has kale in it. But you can't really tell.
THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who helped in the making of this video. It's amazing and I'm sure super helpful to new vegans or people who want to eat more plant based!
It can't help any new vegans when there aren't even any old vegans.
You're not vegan.
I'm a new vegetarian but there's days that are fully plant based and this is super helpful! So happy information like this exists especially for those of us who don't have any vegans in our lives. Kudos!!!
I'm newly plant based and this video gave me tons of ideas on what to stock up on. Thanks for sharing!!
This was quite possibly one of the most helpful and useful videos. Alone from being a great vegan tutorial video this was also one of the most informative videos on HEALTH! Sent to literally all my friends. This will be great for people that struggle with feeling lost in a grocery store as well.
I also highly recommend the 21 Seasoning Salute from Trader Joes. You can put it on anything but my favorite use is for roasted vegetables!
I was waiting for this !!!! Thank you so much
That is an excellent video. I love how throughout you are in it, providing explanations and tips. 👍
I love this video! I've been trying to little by little reduce my meat-based consumption up until reaching vegan, this will help TONS on that. Thank you!
I’ve been vegetarian for 7 months now slowly transitioning to being vegan and this video was so helpful
I’ve been vegan for 6 years now, I have almost nothing of what she has 😅 (i wish I did) but I must agree.... soy sauce is a must. ✨ good luck on everyones journeys! 😊
This is great and very helpful! I'm starting to try and incorporate more plant based foods into my diet and this is giving me lots of ideas for things to try.
In my experience at the beginning you should just stick to the meals you've always had (burgers, fajitas, pasta, burritos, pizzas, tacos, curries, noodles) using the same spices and substituting the meat for tofu, lentils beans, mushrooms or chickpeas, even tvp or fake meats if necessary. Once you've gotten used to the new flavours they'll taste just as good, will be as easy to make and you can start finding new recipes!!
Good luck everyone trying this new journey ❤
Don’t forget a few dried non sugared fruits like raisins, dates, figs. Dates are so versatile and a few raisins can add a pop of flavor in a salad dressing. And figs...well figs are just awesome 😀
Thank you for this video. It's the best one I've seen on this subject. I'm going to try and incorporate what I can into my diet. Right now I can't have beans but only once a week because of my kidneys.
in Finland we have a very nice variety of vegan products that are made in here and with produce that was grown here - like a lot of oat-based stuff and meat replacements, so I love to support the companies that make them
Love this!! Thanks Goodful!🙌🏻☺️
Thanks Rachel for introducing us with great basic vegan ingredients and how they can be used.🙏💙💙
This should be the Vegans starter guide moving forward! Vegan for over 6 months now. Absolutely spot on with everything listed.
This is a great video for a shopping list! Thank you for sharing 💚🌱
WAIT…WHAT!!! Learning how to be whole food plant based. What a great video! So much information! Great ideas, some I’ve not seen before! Great to incorporate meals when you are trying to change to your new way of eating!!SUBCRIBED!!!!!! ❤️
Ran out of chickpeas recently I’m sad lol
Another ingredient i love using is kimchi! U can put it in in salads or cook korean dishes like kimchi pancakes/ stew! Super easy and yummy :)
Wow this is such an informative and well-made video. I’ve been vegan for about 7 years now and I feel like I still learned so many new things to try
Extremely helpful video!!! Great job! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Vegan for about a year here, after 12 years of vegetarianism that I started at 16. So easy for me because I had time to learn all this. I have all these ingredients already but it's so fun to learn how to make all the things we want without animal products. It's getting easier and easier all the time. One of my fave things was learning to use aquafaba and coconut milk for whipping in desserts. Love me some desserts.
This is extremely helpful and informative, and all of it actually seems really do-able. It also gave some great ideas and inspiration for meals!
Extremely helpful video!! This is deff a starter kit kind of video
Eggplant and brown sugar are insanely versatile! Whenever I’m making a savory dish that needs some egg binding (like vegan burgers), I bake some eggplant until tender and use the “meaty” part to do so (it also fills me up like meat so it’s great too); and brown sugar is a fenomenal substitute for honey and maple syrup (I live in a country where there’s no maple syrup, so I use brown sugar instead)
In addition to pasta, I keep noodles in my pantry, usually rice noodles or buckwheat noodles.
This was amazingly helpful, as I'm a Vegan BEGINNER; THANK YOU!
Fantastic video! Even though I'm not vegan, I love the idea of eating vegan 2 or 3 times a week. Your recipes are great because they just require swapping out certain ingredients. Also, I love beans and lentils, so I'm good there.
I’m Jewish and use vegan butter every day to keep kosher and we use smart balance which tastes just like butter and is so light and creamy it’s absolutely delicious
Wao!! I'm incredibly surprised by the HUGE amount of recepies you can make with non-animal products. I'm not a big fan of meet, but my husband does, so I'm trying to include in his diet more tasty planted base options. Your video is INCREDIBLE!! I will make my grocery list and slowly bring all those stuff into my kitchen!!
Girl this was plain and simple . Great job..
Currently vegetarian & on my way to eating mostly vegan--this was SO helpful!
This was so helpful, thank you Rachel! xx
I started transitioning to vegan a month ago and I was looking for something EXACTLY like this. I was on pinterest looking at vegan shopping lists and they just listened fruits and vegetables and it's like yeah I know lol. I was looking for a list of things the average American household might not usually stock, like nutritional yeast, copious amounts of raw cashews, etc. So thank you!
Started subbing miso for soy sauce based on Dr Greger's recommendation & it works super well. Still packs umami, but it's a more nuanced and complex flavor
Incredibly helpful as I transition fully. Thanks heaps
I am not vegan but those recipes look good
Ours are amazing too, check them out 🤗🌱
You can try making them someday! Vegan meals taste great and they are better for the environment.
Ive been vegan for years and never thought of half of these unprocessed alternatives, life changing
This was very helpful. Thank you for the video Rachel!
I’ve been vegan for 5 months, this is so helpful!
I neeeed all of these recipes! They all looked so good and easy! Makes me feel like I can do this vegan thing!
Wow ...every post on this channel is excellent! Thank you!
Overall spices... sumac, chick n less seasoning, smoked paprika, celery seeds, crispy fried onions, cinnamon. Dried fruit like dates. Beet powder.
my family are heavy meat eaters but i’ve slowly gotten most of these staples into our pantry over the months
This is such a great wrap up of everything vegan cooking. Very informative 😁
Living in semi rural Utah we don't have Trader Joe's or Whole Foods within 100 miles, so I have to depend on what I can find at Wal-mart and Smiths. Can't have wheat and my gut does NOT like too many legumes (maybe one bean burger a week for me), but quinoa, mushrooms, sunflower seeds, GF pasta, and brown rice are HUUUGE staples for me. Tahini tends to be expensive but I found out you can sub in sunflower butter. Also frozen veggies and raw sweet potato. Fresh greens are also expensive, but to make them last longer I put them in my pesto or sometimes morning smoothies. Also a total convert to nooch and chia seeds.
You can train your gut slowly, just keep adding small amounts of legumes several times a week. Like putting some chickpeas in your salad or some lentils in a stew. Your gut bacteria will change over time and digestion will be easier.
Great video! I keep lots of dates as a sugar substitute.
This was a well thought out beautiful video.
We pretty much have the same pantry lol
I would add kefir and starters. A water kefir and a sourdough starter are great to have going in your vegan arsenal.
I’m not vegan, but my sister is vegetarian now. Dinner has been kinda hard for her, considering that the rest of us eat meat. I loved this video! Now I have some ideas of what to make for her as a meat substitute so that she can actually feel full after dinner.
You’re amazing 💜
Her tips are AWESOME. I'm writing all of these down
I’m so jealous of that GIANT package of nutritional yeast!
Miso, vegemite, and /or marmite is great for adding meaty flavour, use sparingly mix in marinades and sauces for your faux meat
You are my favorite Vegan channel!
Please do a video on how to cook that tofu, looks delicious...
I'm not vegan but I just started making my own oat milk for my coffee and it's AMAZING! It also costs as little as 13 cents a quart which is insanely cheap.
Domino brand sugars that are processed in both Maryland and in New York are free of bone char.
For anyone looking for more protein "sattu" is really nice, you can find it in Indian food stores
Yess i love sattu parathas
The food looks amazing and the content is spot on.
Danks, girl! This helped a lot! 🌱❤️
I love it, vegan for a few months and looks like I'm in a good path for myself 💚
Amazing video, thank you so much!
Very good presentation and I think I would do some of the recipe. Could you post them in another video?
This is very helpful since I’m starting my vegan journey!!!
I appreciate your advise so much thank you
Thanks for posting . What is better to have Flax seeds or Flax seed in powder form if that's all you can buy.
Very informative for a beginner.. thanks
Having started adding more plant-based foods into my diet, this has been helpful. I have resisted going vegan for years because there are numerous articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals that indicate that some soy foods can promote gynecomastia in men as well as prostate cancer. In recent research, I'm finding a lot of articles attempting to debunk this, but none of them are from peer-reviewed medical journals. Some do come from dieticians, but none of them source any peer-reviewed medical research. To that end, I tend to avoid any soy products as much as possible, but there are a lot of things in that are totally workable. Also, I noticed that in some videos, people are using what appear to be Progresso Italian Seasoned Bread Crumbs. These contain milk, as do most brands of this product. Thankfully, Kikoman Panko Bread Crumbs do not and those can be put in the food processor with Italian seasoning to make your own.
Great information! I’ll probably never be totally vegan, but I’m trying to make a lot more plant-based meals.
