  • Day in the life of a tree planter in BC, Canada. We've been on this trench block for a while now and the land is good so you are able to consistently put in 3200 trees a day.
    I hope this video shows what tree planting really is an inspires some people to try it.
    Thanks for watching and please subscribe, it would mean a lot.

    Looking back to 2019 when I planted 120,970 golden cedar tree cuttings per day in the nursery. True I didn't walk all day or carry 70+lbs bags of seedlings. I just dipped bundles of cedar tree tips into growth hormone then planted them into blocks with soil. End of the day job done well.

    Hey Chris, i was thinking of doing something like this next summer. I usually do farm work so the hours and labour hopefully won't be that new haha. My questions are do you get your equipment like the harness and bags provided for you? And also how do you get to the site and how long does it take - I've heard hours in trucks or helicopter flights. Crazy storys!

    • @KrisKeon
      @KrisKeon  11 місяців тому

      Hey yea you should I loved it. All the planting I did was interior BC so we didn’t need any harnesses or anything. That’s more of a coastal thing. The bags you have to pay for but once you get hired the foreman will give you all the info on what to order. It’s usually all from a forestry supply company called IRL supplies. As for the site it differs a lot. Usually not too far, like 20 mins one way but I’ve had some that were 3 hours away. And yea if the road access is bad then sometimes they’ll fly you in with a chopper. I did that a bunch my first season. It’s a lot of fun. If you’re a good worker and able to tough it through the weather and the bugs you’ll do really well. Good luck!

    • @KrisKeon
      @KrisKeon  Рік тому +8

      Hey man that’s great you’re thinking of trying it out. Yea the best advice I have for planting a lot of trees and making a lot of money is when you are out planting never stop planting. Like a lot of people in the beginning will stop and stare at the piece and wonder if they are planting in the right place etc. you just have to trust you’re self and get into a rhythm and just put one tree in after the other. And before you know it you’ve planted a lot. No matter how slow it’s going just never stop planting. Good luck with the season!

      Find a good contractor for your first year. I work in silviculture and my work in the planting season revolves around supervising the planting companies, and some are known to be better than others. The most important factor is planter experience, this determines the speed and quality of the plant and when a company has a lot of “vets” it shows that there’s a reason planters choose to go back to those contractors. Some of the best from my experience that take rookies are Blue Collar and Brinkman.
      You also need to prioritize the quality of your plant since most contracts have targets that need to be met. Your work can and will be checked, and if it’s not good enough, your crew will be sent back to fix it. I also recommend starting in the spring season (usually end of May to about June 21) as the blocks are quite a bit easier and it isn’t as hot.
      Basically, find a good company and make sure to keep your company’s employer happy. We like tree planters, but we have legal obligations to get blocks to specific densities, and we need to get as many of those trees grown as possible.

  • @jthieme7529
    @jthieme7529 Рік тому +1

    Hi Kris, I was wondering if you knew how many trees that you plant actually survive, because it seems like you approach it with a quantity over quality approach, so It would be interesting to know the survival rates of those trees. And have you been planting long enough that any of your planted areas have taken full root? Could you go back and see the impact you made?

    • @KrisKeon
      @KrisKeon  Рік тому +15

      Hey J. The vast majority of our trees are check to make sure they are above a certain standard. They take plots (a specific circular area) and will check the trees in those plots. The trees have a lot of metrics they they are evaluated on. They can't be too deep, too shallow, too loose, have an open hole, be leaning or be too close together. Out of all the trees that are checked 94% have to be passable. So it may look like we are just throwing them in, but you get good at planting a passable tree in not much time. Different land will change the effort level needed for this. You are right tho that the number one goal is not to plant perfect trees.
      As for survival rates it depends on so many factors like rain fall and soil nutrient levels so what usually ends up happening is most of the trees survive or almost none. I've heard that survival rates are between 60 and 70% but this value could definitely be off.
      One of the reasons we plant so many is the forestry company will come back 3-5 years later and thin out the re-plant so that the best trees are the ones left growing. This way they aren't competing for nutrients with a tree that likely wouldn't make it anyway.
      The summer of 2022 was my second year planting and I was able to go back and check some of my trees from the year before and 99% were still alive and doing well so I was happy about that.
      As for the time it takes them to take root it's a long time. We checked some 5 year old trees this summer and their roots were still almost entirely contained in the original plug with a few little shoots sprouting out.
      The pine trees are especially resistant though and are nursery grow for those exact growing conditions (altitude, rainfall, length of summer season, etc...). They grow in wet and supper dry areas and even in rocks. We found a dropped pine tree from the previous year and it had started to take root and was doing fine. They are supper hardy trees and want to grow.
      Hope this answers you questions, thanks for watching :)

    • @KrisKeon
      @KrisKeon  9 місяців тому

      Theres just too many trees for the government/forestry companies too look after. With that being said though, the trees are evaluated after a given amount of time (roughly 3-5 years) and if the quality of the regrowth is good and the trees reach there expected heights and density requirements there the land is returned back to the government and the trees are given their time to grow. If the trees aren't up to this standard however, the land will have to be fully (or partially) replanted. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

    The size of this clear cut is absolutely mind boggling, is this the norm or a one-off situation? Also, aren't there any environmental regulations in Canada, or even any kind of incentive from the logging industry itself to prevent this magnitude of recklessness? This is what slowly putting yourself out of business, and in the process, endagering the welfare of your country and all living things within it, looks like.

    • @KrisKeon
      @KrisKeon  9 місяців тому

      Yea I know this clear cut was extensive. Usually they are big but they are broken up by tree stands. This one was pretty complete. I'm not sure what the regulations are in terms of size of clear cut but yea we do have laws that state for every tree cut down, a new one must be planted. This will in theory ensure the the supply will never run out but I'm almost certain that they are harvesting faster then these new trees can grow.

    • @KrisKeon
      @KrisKeon  4 місяці тому +1

      Depends on the contract but it was usually a mixture of pine and spruce, sometimes a mixture of pine, spruce, fur, and larch. In the latitudes thats we planted at those were pretty much the only trees that grow there. So the replant was similar to rewilding but also the trees were planted in rows at a specific density that I guess could be considered plantation planting. So the short answer is a bit of both.

Think foam pad or reliable air mattress, down sleeping bag and wool blanket. Also a pillow is really nice. Clothes you want loose fitting and a couple of buffs or other face coverings so the bugs dont get you. And then like rain gear and really good boots. (Good boots are a must) I'd suggest scarpa. 400 bucks is a lot for boots but your feet will thank you. You are taking 40 000 steps a day and you need them to hold up from all the toe closing you will be doing. Other then that the basic camping things. A tarp over your tent is nice.
