FYI, he pronounces his name bass (like the fish) teen rather than basschiun. He wrote this several years ago inspired by coming out as gay to his family, and the stories of friends' experiences as well. While his parents have come around (and his mom is quite present and fiercely supportive in his social media), his sister and her husband have not creating a situation where his hubby Jerome isn't welcome at family gatherings with his sister, so Bastien gets to either go alone or not at all.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I can not imagine rejecting my children for their sexual orientation. I so appreciate your treatment of the song and that you actually listened to it. So many reactors are too intent on jumping in with no consideration of where they break in (I know it has to be broken up for copyright). Adam Rupp has said that he really struggled to record his part because he kept breaking into tears. He looks a little teary in the video because he inhaled a soap flake and was trying not to cough.
This is such a heart wrenching song and video. Bastien wrote this several years ago this version has had a few changes that Tim helped with to get the message to many different people and situations. Adam and his husband Jerome did a video with the original version 4 years ago under their group One Up Duo ( Jerome is an amazing singer also ) Adam B has done 6 videos with Home Free so far. Something To Talk About ( His debut video) I Still Believe In You Hark! The Herald Angels Sing The Thanksgiving Song Let Me Come Home The Greatest Gifts Of All
So beautiful and yes, bittersweet. Sometimes it’s drugs, politics, religion, various reasons that keep people away from each other. Bastien said it best; we all need a little grace and love to make it through. Bastien wrote this and sung it beautifully. Love those harmonies. Good one David!
Thank you for analyzing all aspects of this masterpiece--the lyrics, the vocals and the videography. Most people do not see all the details that come together to create the heart-wrenching beauty of this video. Home Free has poured their hearts and talents into giving us a message that is sure to heal many relationships in the years to come. This song needs to be heard everywhere.
It's a beautiful sad song. While I was lucky to have a family that didn't react that way with my coming out, knowing how many people do have that experience including Bastien is so emotionally devastating
Bastien broke my heart with this song but man, they all sound absolutely beautiful singing it. I'm just going to make sure I have a tissue when I watch their music videos from now on. Thanks for the Home Free reactions.
I’m attending their Christmas show on Tuesday (12/3/24) and have UVIP tickets. So looking forward to this sung live. Great analysis. You always bring a fresh perspective and enhance the video for me. 💜💜💜
Jimmy has been their videographer in the majority of their videos for many years. He knows them well. If you haven't seen their Behind the Scenes, they are like herding cats when doing videos. You've been filled in on the background of this song. Bastien has proved himself a worthy addition to Home Free. Thanks for your reaction!
Thank you so much, David. This is one of my favorites from their new Christmas album. They redid the lyrics just to widen the audience base. I knew you would have a great take on this.
Thank you for this reaction/analysis, it is excellent and I will have to watch it several times. I was already familiar with the original version as performed by Adam and Jerome Bell Bastien. It is very good as it was, Bastien put his heart and soul in it. Bastien is such a good fit for Home Free, and it seems they all feel the addition has leveled them up to pursue new things. Looking forward to what’s to come. Also, I saw them in concert recently and Bastien has a powerful stage presence. His husband Jerome even sang a song with them too (it’s on my channel).
Another inspiring and evocative reaction and analysis, something I have come to expect when I watch your videos. I have been waiting for you to tackle this song and I am so glad you did! Thank you, you never disappoint. 😃
Glad you’re back at it. This is a heart-wrenching song knowing Bastien wrote it from his life experience. Home Free’s version is brilliant and lovely! I hope you decide to go back and react to Bastien’s introductory video with Home Free. It’s super upbeat and fun! It’s a cover of Bonnie Rait’s “Something To Talk About”.
I just love your deep analyses of these songs. There are so many things you explain that I never really notice, at least consciously and it gives me a much deeper appreciation of the songs you analize
This is so beautiful and so heartbreaking. The first time I heard this I hoped that it wasn't based on fact. Sadly, it is as others have detailed in their comments. I always enjoy your discussion of the visual aspects, since I usually don't "catch on" to that. Never really noticed that the 4 guys are all separated in the intro - and I must have seen this at least 20 times now. Still makes me tear up every time. Since I have seen it so often, I know the lyrics now and try to sing along, but I get choked up every time. Adam Rupp said that he couldn't stop crying while he was trying to record the percussion track. I can't imagine how they will ever get through this if they put it in their live show. The entire place will be blubbering. I'm one of the lucky ones who doesn't have to ever wonder if I can go home, but I know there are many people who do. I'm glad that Home Free is getting this message out to a winder audience than it previously had. We need more love and acceptance around here. Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season. And scratchies to the beauteous Timmy.
Thank you for another great analysis - I really appreciate the way you point things out in the construction of the video that aren't obvious to me consciously, but serve to tell the story. Adam Rupp has said that he struggled to record the percussion for this one because it made him cry.
I’m so glad you’re back, your reactions are so amazing and insightful! Bastien wrote an amazing song that was very personal and it seemed to me he was re-living the story not acting. Beautifully done Bastien and Home Free! Stunning! I just love these boys! ❤
This is such a poignant song, written & sung beautifully. The harmonies & beatboxing are impeccable as always. BTW, Austin Brown has a rendition of "Defying Gravity" on his channel that's terrific!
Thanks for the heartfelt reaction! I didn’t notice anything peculiar in the way they are distant from each other.. but I’m from Finland and that’s how we do it! At least 2m/6ft space😁
I'm happy that my daughter have never had any doubt, either to open up to her immideate family or the whole extended one about her nature. She wasn't the first and, there had been a generation before her that knew a welcoming and loving family too. I'm very happy to belong to a supportiive family where sex, beliefs or other such issues have been the problem. Not that all is sunshine. There are some splits, but those are of a more personal nature that could happen to anybody, without any predjudicial reasons clouding up the issue.
DAVID, CHECK OUT A LIVE CONCERT HF DID ABOUT A MONTH OR TWO AGO THEY HAD IN SALEM OREGON. BASTIEN'S HUSBAND JEROME BELL SANG WITH HOME FREE ON THE SONG, WAKE ME UP (WHEN IT'S OVER}. ADAM AND JEROME HYPHENATED BOTH OF THEIR LAST NAMES WHEN THEY GOT MARRIED. TIM ASKED IF ADAM AND HE COULD UPDATE THE LYRICS, ADAM AGREED. ORIGINAL IS ON YOU TUBE. ADAM AND JEROME AUDITIONED FOR THE VOICE SEASON 15 SINGING COULD IT BE I'M FALLING IN LOVE. VIDEO IS ON YOU TUBE.
Just letting you know... Voiceplay and Geoff released their Christmas videos on their patreons Friday and Saturday. They both are absolutely amazing. Don't know when they're being released to UA-cam but will be soon. Voiceplay also put out a teaser short that when they did "Sleeping In The Cold Below" last year for Warframe video games they liked it so much they commissioned them to do a video for their new Warframe game. More details in the short. The video is coming out sometime this month as well.

I see a glimmer of hope when he is seen walking toward a door (home?) in the end.
This is how I see it too!

You brought out so many poignant observations about the lyrics and arrangement of this song. It is really beautiful and meaningful.

Love This Song
Great analysis of this heartfelt Bastien original song.

A very thought provoking track. I get emotional every time I listen to it. Thanks David
Adam Rupp gets to be called Adam since he and his brother started Home Free.
Thank you for another great analysis - I really appreciate the way you point things out in the construction of the video that aren't obvious to me consciously, but serve to tell the story.
Adam Rupp has said that he struggled to record the percussion for this one because it made him cry.
I really enjoy your reaction. There are many details I didn't noticed, but you pointed them out. Thanks for sharing.

Adam Rupp says he had a hard time keeping it together and not breaking down in tears while recoding tis song.
❤❤

I’m doing a rewatch and if you haven’t see HF’s “Brother”, it’s a fun one to put on your 2025 list.
Happy Christmas.
I believe this was the 5th video with Home Free.

Tim and Bastien and Jerome, did a little "tweaking " to just that reason, to make it a wider audience.
Just letting you know...
