  • Fish trap weaving and catching fish. This video starts with explanation of how to weave a fish basket (or any basket) and then I use a GoPro to show it catching fish. Great survival tool!! Skip to 9:15 to watch it in action.

After a few decades of being obsessed with collecting survival and primitive skills techniques, I am putting out these videos to demonstrate the skills and excursions found at my school, Wild Survival (wildsurvivalskills.com). Videos are focused on primitive skills, rewilding, nature awareness, living off the land, off grid living, indigenous skills, shelter building, primitive fire, water purification, trapping, hunting, bow making, flint knapping, primitive pottery, basketry, edible and medicinal plant preparation and numerous indigenous skills.
I began studying wilderness survival when I was 17 in order to have the ability to spend extensive periods of time in nature, seeking out empowerment and without the need for external sources. I began studying in 1993 under Tom Brown Jr eventually teaching for Tracker Inc. I sought-out every old Native American teacher I could and eventually traveled the world living in very remote indigenous villages in the Amazon, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Peru. My school teaches survival and primitive skills, nature awareness, how to live off the land, re-wilding, prepare for disasters. I strongly believe that experiencing survival living changes the way people approach their entire lives.

This is the best fish basket trap video I've seen on yt! You used actual basketry skills, instead of jamming the spokes into the ground or doing rings and filling in later -- yours makes for a much better basket IMO. You used a stone flake for the harvesting and the bending/relief cuts, to illustrate how it could be done in a survival situation where no tools were brought. You caught actual fish in it, and even put in a go pro to show them entering and staying. Even the video editing was excellent, not wearing out the viewer with tedious or lengthy repetition, but working in visually-compelling techniques like the pan out from the bottom of the basket to show the length like it's growing. Well done, Tom! By far my favorite video on this topic!

I choose a topic that I want to learn about and then watch quite a few videos on that subject. This is quite easily the best fish trap, and the best composed & choreographed video i have seen on the subject. I really am quite impressed with this video. Concise, to the point, no yammering on about non-essential topics, no stuttering... just a well constructed video. You have my admiration for this truly excellent production. I have very seldom seen an instructional vid so well constructed as this one has been.

Awesome video! For a survival situation this would be amazing. If you’re near a body of water this would be one of your top priorities, set up sapling spring fish traps for the first day after you have shelter and fire to clean your water, hope for fish on the spring traps and spend the day making a quality basket trap and catch fish almost every day with it, giving you more time to make a few more and once your food is secure it would take very little effort you just check them morning and night.

Folks in my neck of the woods used to put a hollow log in a creek with one end stopped up and the other end narrowed down. They'd check it every day and catch a lot of fish, because fish are curious and seem to like hanging out in dark holes. No bait needed.

You didn't use bait and got a catch first day!! Your awesome lol.
Iv been practacing these over the past year myself. Making mine from bramble vines in a simular weave, but iv found there only effective after they've been set for a week or so.

+Clan Gunn Bushcraft Hey, thanks, cool you've been experimenting with it. I did have some bait at the back, thats why they are always crammed around the GoPro, admittedly I did 4 days in that pond using boiled eggs and then liver pieces seemed to work best.

Thanks Tom, I will do buddy.
That's it, when we haven't got anyone to learn this primitive stuff from, it's all just trial and error.
      For me... Mainly error lol.
Iv shown practacing weaving baskets and a couple of fish traps in a few of my wild camp videos, (more recent ones) but Iv only in last few months been getting results from them.
I'm getting alot of catfish with dog meat. And seem to get crayfish and small crabs with chopped onion.
I want trout, so maybe the chicken liver will draw em in?
I weaved and set five new baskets about three weeks ago. Went back a week later to add the funnels and someone had stolen all five 😠
A more secluded spot for next time I think.
      Cheers bud
