It’s not just food waste it’s always like instead of selling an item at a discount of like 90% off to get it off of your shelves they will throw it away Like I understand if you had a 90% discount and you tried selling the items for like a month and nobody bought it But a lot of these companies like GameStop or clothing companies will literally throw at the products just because it’s unpopular Including companies, take it a step further and tear up anything that goes in the trash because they don’t want poor people wearing their clothes Even though if it’s going in the trash, that means nobody wanted it in the first place for the price that they were charging
Basically, Americans constantly need to purchase goods for the economy to strive. It's consumerism. If we stopped purchasing an excessive amount of food, then companies wouldn't make money. Overall, the economy would then decline. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.
@@BubbaGumpShrimpss All valid points, but also if the excess is free to people and not thrown away, it will be a oversupply and will drive the price down. Hence you always see wastage instead of giveaway to preserve the value of what they can sell.
It means that the economic system upon which most of the world is built is rigged. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the neo-liberal capitalist society that is the USA; capitalism on steroids demands more, more, more just to keep itself working. In short, it's a Ponzi scheme with Nature and natural resources as the ones being conned.
It's the sad part of how we humans live, due to technology we have advanced but we r yet to develop our mentality. I proudly say I never waste or throw the food I eat it. We can feed excess food to people and animals who don't get food on a daily basis and who r in a desperate need. We r wasting our worlds precious resources and for what to throw again.
nobody interviewed any consumers I noticed. As a consumer, I'm constantly forced to buy more quantity than I need or can use. I don't have any problem buying "ugly" food. I think it's ignorant to say companies are wasteful for removing expired products, it would be a huge legal and food safety liability not to do so. They are wasteful for not planning consumer habits more carefully, which should be possible in the Data Age. Not terribly impressed with this but agree there are problems.
Some say expire by while others say best by/use by. I think people tend to mistaken best by with expire and are afraid it's bad or markets get rid of it. Best by stuff should be discounted or sent to a discounted shop after the date.
We need to change people's attitude and transform this society from being throw away to being recycling. We need to redistribute food to be able to get into the hands that need it.
In Europe it is now the law that out-of-date food is given away to the poor in a few countries. The rest - unsuitable for human consumption - can be collected to be fed to livestock or, alternatively, used to create compost for gardeners or organic farmers. Your American system is pathetic.
Ultimately every industry seems to come down to something like this, the common denominator is overdeveloped corporate power; the whole system needs to change, starting with negative externalities.
For me, it's one thing to throw out a veggies, but it's really another when you are throwing away & wasting "meat" an animal that died for you to eat it, I personally am down to only eating fish and little chicken, I haven't eaten beef for years since I saw how the poor cow is brutally slaughtered to be eaten. Animals should not be killed and live in such horrid conditions before slaughter, it's not right and it's cruel........... Don't let these animals die in vain.
Because like how one of the growers near the introduction of the video stated: "Food is expensive to keep fresh; it's expensive to transport." And like someone near the end commented: "We waste a lot of food because, quite frankly, we're lazy."
people are dying for hunger in certain countries of the world because they are lazy and are not farming enough in that country..... while there are abundance of food for others'because those countries have lot of hard working farmers
@@Salmon05219 it's not always black and white situation. Maybe their land is suffering from drought or a natural disaster or plague of locusts. Or there isnt enough opportunirs or resources to do that. There are many factors. Some might be lazy and some are just in a situation out of their control
@@Salmon05219 Countries where people are hungry generally have a much larger percnetage of the population working in agriculture and they work longer hours (much industrial agriculture in the the West is done automatically by giant machines). As much as they talked about this being a poverty issue, I'd argue that the government subsidized food stamp program contributes to this problem. It is government guaranteed prices allowing farmers and stores to make a high enough profit to throw away a large percentage of their product. They don't sell the small strawberries or the bread that's a day old because they don't have to. They have guaranteed sales at high rates, why try to sell anything that's harder to sell? Short term solutions often cause long term problems.
Seeing my roommates waste so much food will send me to an early grave. I’ve tried to suggest a community drawer, or will even ask “hey are you going to eat this, its been there awhile” which will get ignored. They dont care.
it starts at the top of America's Political will and hatred of the poor in this Country. even the Secretary and POTUS(Both Billionaires) seem to go out of their way to make it increasing difficult for Families to feed themselves. especially Students are robbed of getting a decent Education while trying to learn on empty bellies. what are those cuts to "certain" Schools those underprivileged I suspect. $9B this year but as long as these two overfed are doing well along with their Families why care for the poor. it only seems normal for any Leader to force Grocery Stores to donate almost passed due or imperfect products to the poor, but in this case the last thing these two Heroes want is for the hungry in America to be fed for free????!!!!

Thank you for your energy, time, effort you put into this.
thank God that people still care
aaawwwww thats cute
Lol, im going to trowh a few bags of food in the trash bin, just beacuse i care so much about starving africans to death.

"If we stopped wasting food the American economy would go in to cardiac arrest". - Am I missing something here??
Yeah, can someone explain this point?
Yeah man I am interested too in understanding that.

Heather Uva well expiration dates just show when it's the most palatable. You need to look for signs of spoilage.
@Amy Sternheim yes and if things cant be used right away freezing helps us that much more.

How are you forced to buy anything?

That last quote from the Indian woman. Wow. That really hit me!
Lived through wars and eating one meal a day sometimes no meal at all I don't toss even expired 🍞 or cereal.
Keep up the good work, eventually other will follow, God bless amen.

Only capitalism can make something "geometrically" or aesthetically challenged. Unbelievable.

Ya, I love the idea of not creating any food waste in the first place or at least the smallest amount possible 🙌👍👊🌎⭐️⭐️
this is 2019 and America's hunger is 100 times worse!!
what is the background music?
Yes foods in America are abundant but they’re cheap.
The cheap stuff is usually unhealthy though.
If you paid attention in your economics class in high school, you know STORES throw away food, cuz other wise they would go bankrupt. 🤷♀️🤷♂️
It would be mpre profitable to sell it for half the price.
@@intellectualrebel5340 ,nope,,, cuz otherwise ppl will just wait all the time till it goes half price .
If you paid attention to the video you would know that much of the food is wasted in the fields or refused on delivery (so before it reaches stores).

Change income based tax should to consume based tax.
Yes, is that what Europe has? (VAT= Value-Added?) People there eat sensible portions.
👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹
