  • According to the UN, one third of the food we grow ends up in the rubbish bin. In this programme, we'll meet the people trying to stop us from throwing good food away - including a farmer and a green designer. And, of course, Neil and Sam will teach you some new vocabulary as well.
    This week's question
Which of the following foods can be grown in Britain throughout the year? Is it:
    a) strawberries?
    b) kale? or,
    c) rhubarb?
Listen to the programme to find out the answer.
    Vocabulary
use-by date - date until which food may be safely eaten, usually printed on the food
container - eat local, eat seasonal
slogan used to encourage people to buy and eat fresh food which has been grown in their local area during the current season
middleman - business people who buy produce directly from producers, and make money by selling it on to shops or customers
commissioned - receiving a payment which is directly related to the amount sold
worst-case scenario - the worst, most serious and unpleasant thing that could possibly happen in a situation
blanket (+ verb) - (adverb) applied in the same uniform way to everything, even when there are differences between those things

    My summary while listening
The today’s topic mainly discussed about food waste. As a matter of fact, when we throw away food, the resources to produce food such as water, land and transport are also wasted.
Food waste is a major problem around the world. People are inclined to do the shopping in supermarkets so farmers are struggling what foods they should sell, what prices they should charge.
According to Josefina, she used to sell her products to middlemen who is commissioned by supermarkets, so she and other local growers had no control or couldn’t predict what they should sell leading to a large amount of food going to waste.
Another problem is that we throw food away after buying them when they reach their use-by-date. However, the shelf life could be much longer. Food producers and supermarkets have to take the worst case scenario so they have a tendency to blanket apply shorter use-by-dates to protect consumers. However, a lot of safe-to-eat goods get thrown away.

Vocabulary from the Video 6 minute English "United against food waste":
    - Refrigerator (n) = fridge - electric equipment to preserve the food at a cold temperature.
    - Guilty (adj) = (syn) ashamed, embarrassed, shamefaced. Exp: feel guilty. I am guilty of wasting food.
    - Use-by-date = a date printed on the food's container showing how long the food is safe to eat.
    - Carreros = Middlemen.
    - Middleman (n) - a person who buys the food directly from the grower, and sells it to customers for a profit.
    - A slogan "Eat local, eat seasonal" encourage people to buy food that has been grown locally during the current season.
    - The worst-case scenario - the most serious, unpleasant thing that would happen in a situation.
    - Blanket (adv)+ verb - applied in the same way to everything even when there are differences between those things.
Nowadays, people usually preserve their food in the refrigerator for a longer time of usage. However, they may not pay attention to the use-by-date of the food, consequently, the food may be found out-of-date. So it couldn't be safe to eat. It is one of the most common reasons why people waste food currently. To avoid the worst-case scenario of throwing most food we have, people need to be encouraged to "eat local, eat season" instead of buying too much food needed.
    Thanks much for this video.
