- By 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than marine life. And plastic has a notoriously long life in landfills. We meet entrepreneurs discovering new ways to retrieve plastic from our waterways, turning it into fuel or back into plastic again. Others look to reduce single-use plastic in our daily lives, by working on alternative materials.
Food waste does not seem to make sense in a world where so many are hungry, but it’s a major problem. And food in landfills releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. We meet the people trying to divert food from landfills in New Zealand and Singapore by repurposing it for human consumption, animal feed and now even biofuel.
We also meet entrepreneurs in the USA and Europe going a step further to avoid producing food from animals completely. They’re developing cultivated meat, now on sale in Singapore. Is this the food of the future?

Packaging is a primary contributor to waste. Working towards a standardisation of packaging can significantly increase the viability of reusing packaging material.

@@ernstschafer6092 This is just a lazy excuse for covenience. For the world to address climate change, people need to recognise that it is crucial to live in a sustainable way immediately. If we don't change in time, we doom ourselves and our children to live in a very harsh climate in the future. It is not difficult to see that weather event is increasingly more severe. But no scientist can ascertain the rate of change of climate with good accuracy. This is a big issue and I believe it is the primary reason for inaction. Climate science is far from perfect but its projection of a warmer world with severe climate condition is accurate.

It's hard to avoid waste, but I am trying to shift back from online shopping where possible, and have been using reusable pads, bags, straws, and cups for over 2 years now. I've also recently (maybe 6 months ago) finally gotten the hang of bringing my own lunch consistently (instead of sometimes like I used to), plus my own water.
We can work towards in reducing waste more viable and feasible, and build up towards waste-reducing environment with an infrastructure.
good job. I have reduced my waste bags from 2-3 a month down to half a bag. compost all cardboard and paper,buy less plastic packed stuff,paper/cardboard where i can,send metal cans to recycling. not perfect but if everyone did it,it would make a difference.
Change can be hard ,but well worth the benefit for positive change.Upcycling and recycling, energy use , water conservation are my focuses so far. I Air dry clothes, manual wash instead of the dish washer. I recycle and reuse jars for plants and organize art supplies. I use the same plastic water bottle.Gray water goes to the garden outside.

its better to reduce waste than recycle it or other high tech solutions.
But this solution will help the existing pile of waste already generated.
With all this plastic being consumed, fossils fuel in the air and carbon. It’s no wonder we’re getting cancer and other illnesses.
These guys though are the real superhero’s and inspirations. This was a fascinating documentary and really hits home as to what we can do to help.
Sorry had to jump in here, plastic is not consumed and a lot of it is recycled just not enough mainly the fault of recycling not being able to take that type of plastic or some other obstacles and getting it to that point as in transport or people putting it in the right bins etc. As for fossil fuel in the air not for most of the world the planet is 70% water so we have 30% left over that we live on. 0.8% of that left over that's farming, mining, etc all in that 0.8% is where we live etc, so fossil fuel really isn't an issue, the issue is getting companies moving on making things renewable, Al Gore is making a killing out of this climate change BS and i say BS because it is at first it was a hole in the Ozone then Global warming now it is Climate change, sorry it if this is climate change bring it on, just in case no one has noticed winter is hanging around longer at least in Australia it is it like a month longer and it is colder, but i have noticed in Canada it is colder too where as in Russia it is warmer some are saying it is a tilt movement and that would explain a few things like the loss of a kilometre of perma ice in Antarctica on the opposite side to the Australian side but then our side gained 4 kilometres of perma ice. And cancer well they cure cancer in cattle, so what is more plausible they find a cure for cattle and not humans or they keep us sick make loads of money off us employing millions and you notice they are still asking for money we have been giving to cancer research since 1864 or something, what s more plausible, and if you think our governments aren't like that look at china ageing economy all of a sudden a new virus, affects the old the worst, oh where did it come from ??? come on lets be real.
@@MrDjhano You are right,fossil fuel isnt so much of a issue,they demonize it to instate bogus taxes which do nothing for the people or environment. Recycling is not Green or Good, reuse is better. Recycling takes huge amount of labor and power and alot of the plastics arent pure after recycled no matter how hard they try. Sadly companies can buy virgin plastic cheaper than recycled in most cases. Al gore and friends should be locked up for this ponzi sceme farce perpetuated on people. many cancers come from the poison food system,roundup on everything,atrazine,herbacides,etc. You dont know whats in it unless u grew it,and thats not even 100% a guarantee. As for curing cancer,that wont happen because its just not profitable for doctors or pharma companies.. add a scamdemic and shut half the world down so china can take over. Wake up sheeple!

I'm so excited to see that companies are getting on-board to help promote a more circular economy - we need to work together to reduce and eliminate plastic and unnecessary waste - this should start at the production line and societies need to educate themselves on how to appropriately dispose of and recycle garbage. It's all about being a good steward of our environment for the future.
It also helps when we only take/ prepare just enough food on our plates, and produce less waste. Example, brown bananas is perfect for baking banana bread, it's sweeter naturally from the ripped process. I even used brown skin banana to make banana pancakes or muffins 🥞😋
@@___beyondhorizon4664 think what will have the biggest impact.. is a method that bins are resuable and comes with a valeu refillable and if dry goods comes in bulk at stores and you just hold a container under it to get your produce. and ZERO packaging good recipe do. gonne give that a try

It's true that recycling plastic to create other disposable products (cups, plates, etc.) is not worth it and that it is a lot better to use the algae type of biodegradable plastic instead. Otherwise, to use properly the plastic that we already have in our dumps, it is possible to recycle plastic and transform it into long-term construction products such as bricks, plastic wood, windows, and paving bricks. These are products that use plastic to build houses, schools, buildings, streets, etc., and not just simple recycled cups (disposable things). In this case, houses and entire schools are already being built using this simple and efficient technology in Asia (Thailand), Africa (Ivory Coast, Kenya, and Nigeria), and Latin America (Colombia, Bolivia, and Mexico). Colombia is the country with more expertise and advanced companies in this area. In Ivory Coast, for example, there is no garbage collection process, so people dispose of plastic waste in the open land. So, the Colombian company Conceptos Plasticos is producing together with UNICEF schools and homes in this country. Plastic bricks made with recycled material are more resistant than conventional bricks. More resistant also than concrete brick. In addition, it does not absorb water and moisture and is simply treated to withstand excessive heat. Look on social networks for the page of the Colombian company Conceptos Plasticos. And if you can, there's a video from the Business Insider channel on YT called How To Make Bricks From Plastic Trash. It shows these projects in action. And also the BBC Earth Lab channel video called These Recycled Plastic Bricks Are Stronger Than Concrete and How A Ghanaian Man Is Building Affordable Homes With Waste Plastics.
Buried food scraps is an excellent way to feed the soil. As a gardener I’ve buried all my food scraps in open spots, within two weeks I can dig that soil and there’s nothing there other than the worms who have enjoyed it.
Ask Woolworth and other companies to not charge $12 for tomatoes and rather throw them away than decrease the price
And Amazon burns huge piles of inventory rather than put it on sale. It's just how capitalism works. Read "Grapes of Wrath".
Some great ideas and solutions. But I would have like to see more emphasis on reducing the waste in the first place. Why produce so much food that won’t be sold? Do we need to use so many straws? And so on. I see these solutions presented can be short term fixes while we transition to a world where we use less, but fear that they will not incentivise reduction in consumption.
Unfortunately, capitalism drives consumption. Theres no way around it unless there is a better economic system.

There just isn't much incentive in our system to waste less, even wasting money is no problem as long as your profit is higher you can write it off and all these startups examples would go around and tell people to waste less and cook at home. Sadly they won't get paid for that a lot.

@@Utoko I think that if we went back to the barter system things would be much better the only problem with that is there are a bunch of suckers that want to take advantage of the honesty of the people which makes everybody take a giant step backwards they started to get rid of thieves in various ways and then the thieves took office because of racism and prejudice making things rife with opportunity why not they would say. So barter system get rid of the thieves rehabilitate them whatever it takes and everything should be back to normal according to what's on paper
I am up for everything except cultivated meat. All my life as adult I have always saved leftover vegetables or picked chicken or turkey off bones after meal not used put in freezer containers to make several quarts of soup which costed me nothing. Stale bread or rolls ground up into crumbs put in freezer for casserole and or diced up with garlic butter and herbs for croutons. Frugality is a must and saves money and waste. Veg skins or ends of vegetables wash and put in freezer to boil later and strain for stock. Pizza jars remove labels make great storage jars for pasta etc. Just sharing a few things. Thank you. One more observation. The hometown butcher is a thing of the past. Used to go and get cut what you need. Now are huge packages of meats unless you freeze or meat goes bad in stores. Just reflecting on years past. FYI I’m 62 years old but grew up on farm around canning fruits and vegetables and livestock. Clothes that weren’t too good had buttons and zipper removed put in sewing kit and squares cut for quilts, curtains with added trims, pillow cases or other things that could be used from all sorts of fabric remnants..
That's how I was raised also. Grandparents went thru the great depression. Waste was a sin.

So many in this documentary have it wrong. Don't start with waste management, start with reducing production of disposable plastics. Force the producers to look for more suitable packaging materials!

The only way to get the masses of people to change wasteful habits is to make it personally beneficial for them them to do it. I thought most of the ideas presented took human nature consideration and I was inspired by the creative ways people are tackling the world’s waste problems.
probably the most beneficial thing to do is to tax the hell out of throw away stuff like straws and one time use utensils.... then people will naturally put the throw away culture out of business.....

As exciting as this sounds, I really hope this is not about corporations green washing. Circular economy - yes absolutely! Green washing deception - not going to cut it.

We make synthetic rubber sheets from thrown away single use plastic bags and polyethylene. More than two metric ton of plastic bags are upcycled daily in our Dhaka based facility. These synthetic rubber sheets are used in footwear industries.
The important thing we need is MORE CAMPAIGN on the Dangers of Waste.
Humans need to be conditioned into thinking smarter.
Trained to learn to dispose properly.
Recycling and Environment Protection should be the focal point in our everyday lives.

There is a startup for takeout containers that can be returned for reuse. But, it doesn't really solve the problem. Even in Canada, only few percentage of the waste is recycled. We need to have stores that we can just bring our containers to buy products and have less waste. It's also important to make things last.

If all the farmland was not being aggregated in the hands of a few megacorps, the people could all have their own gardens, and even those who don't want to could buy their food at farmers markets. Any surplus would become compost or animal feed, OG circular economy.
Both Calgary and Edmonton alberta Canada have had compostable collection bins ever since I can remember. It is odd to walk into a household and not see a bin. Both cities compost even meat and animal bones and provide it to the communities for free or low cost. Even paper towel, plates and pizza boxes go into compost.
This is the kind of project that I would like to be involved in. I no longer use plastic and if I have to, I recycle and repurpose. I hope that people will really pay attention to how we can better protect our planet.

The innovations and systems shown here are fantastic and could change the game considerably if allowed, The main problem beingthat those that could legislate to control or tax plastic production are the same that benefit from production and supply of base materials, crude oil, these systems of supply work hand in hand with military industrial complex and global elites and so individual groups would not be able to alter this status quo until the petro dollar system is replaced and a more equitable sustainable system is able to affect real change.

NZ's segment showed a reuse economy based on and perpetuated by the need to be WASTEFUL on bread. Just imagine the carbon/energy footprint of a can of "beer from bread". Focusing on the over production of bread should be the first priority instead of requiring wastefulness of perfectly edible food to sustain a reuse economy. It should only be a stop gap process while working on reducing/eliminating bread waste. It is a feel good experiment but does not address the root cause. The mad dash to reduce the unit cost of any products is the culprit of overproduction, overconsumption and wastefulness?!
Imagine more nice, local bakeries could survive well if not for mass production… less wastages as all bakers will try to sell everything or produce less.

Food is the most essential thing in life. Most people don't think about it because they have access to food on a regular basis. But if we think about this deeply, we will realize that everything we do is so that eventually we can get food on the table. Money is just a way to pay for food. If the work we do will never lead us to food, nobody would do the work. So, all wars are fought due to the lack of food, the need for future food, or to protect the food source such as land, oil, water, etc. So, if you can solve food problems, you will have peace. And food problems can be solved simply by cultivating the existing land, which most countries have lots of. Spend time, energy, and technology on cultivating the land and you will have so much abundance for all mankind.
Who on earth could give a thumbs down to this wonderful video ? This is an enthusiastic endless possibility for planet earth.

We need more of these people in the world, we all need to do our bit to stop waste and help heal the damage to Mother Earth before it’s too late, technology needs to slow down a bit and think things out more we don’t need to change our mobile phones yearly make one last the phone companies especially apple could help with this and make all phones upgradable to prevent waste including iPads, laptops and computers.
Love this documentry. What a brilliant ideas this young and bright young generations are coming up with. IMost loved and thankfull part, they are not thinking about profit only, first and foremost, they are thinking about environment.

The sad thing is - single use paper products are often far less "environmentally friendly" than lightweight plastic (transport and processing "costs" alone).
We shouldn't have to choose between trees and air quality and Turtles and whales.
So very simple: Tell the corporations who have caused this that they will have one chance to totally turn that around, and then they will be dissolved, nationalized.

Wait a minute... to not waste left-over bread by making it into beer IS good for the environment. But how is exporting that beer good? That's a lot of miles for one can or bottle. Which might itself not be recyclable. Isn't that shooting oneself in the (other) foot?
How about just selling the left-over bread at the end of the day and the beginning of the next day for half price? That's what supermarkets in Germany do and there is never any left-over bread not sold that way. Bakeries have their favorite charities collect their share of left-overs. Supermarkets do the same with other not sold items like vegetables and dairy. We eat it up.
That's one of the biggest issue with these companies and their 'policies'. They just throw away food just like that. I love how Germany does it with the half price promotion. Im sure many will choose to buy it at a much lower price point which ultimately reduce waste collection. Although the beer idea is great, but it creates an extra problem. More packaging used, more resources used to produce beer. Instead of producing another product, why cant we just end waste at the point it is supposed to be consumed?
The US thinks that everyone is like them they think that everyone will wait until the food is about to expire and then eat LMFAO
What about supply vs demand. Produce enough bread that will be sold for the day. SIMPLE.
What about DEMAND VS SUPPLY. Produce enough bread according to the demand. SIMPLE.
20 years ago we (NZ) used to discount the bread a few hours before the supermarket closed and this worked well. However because poor families were waiting for this mark down everyday instead of paying full price our bread makers decided it is better for them financially to send it to landfill and pig farmers. Our supermarkets don't discount dated products any more for this reason. It's pure greed.
This is absolutely the answer to the end of all plastic pollution and land fills and if one really wants to speed up the process put a deposit return on all types of plastics. And wow it's like money laying all.over the place. You are the man dude .also you could put up Barrier walls along the highway systems to prevent trash from going to far out and have a road convoy pick it up and send the materials to be processed and it would stop so much wildlife from being killed .

I don’t like waste either, but I live in my car alone. Buying groceries is a waste for a single person, they need smaller packaging! I try to give what can away, but it’s not easy!

This is very refreshing to see even though I do not care to eat meat anymore because it helped my chronic pains to go away and just improved my overall health. Even if I feel like eating something that tastes like meat, I turn to plant based products. I hate all this pollution in our environment everywhere.

People should start at their door step, taking responsibility for their behaivour, not waiting for politicians, organizations or anybody to think for them. People consume but do not want to see the consequences. People use more than they need. Everyone can make an immediate change regarding waste, eating preferences, clothes, living....it is a journey and I love to be part of it...and I want to thank to all people who do not ignore our planet, close environment or animals who are victims of our egoistic behaviour...

Daft bugger...affectionately meant, LOL can't you see that this is promotional material for the Singapore and New Zealand government? They take money from basic health care, sanitation and education, and give it to innovators that talk big about little insignificant impractical unrealistic technological comfort virtue signalling. Wind power in Europe is toted as a great success - but it has nothing to do with reducing consumption. In fact the economics and subsidies only work if everyone keeps on consuming more energy! But then again - it obviously works as propaganda. If all the subscribers pledged to only buy what they need, eat what they buy, compost the waste themselves - stop buying any kind of 'convenient' lunch over the counter - that would be a good start at making change. Isn't going to happen is it. This is a circular argument in a circular video - it just comes back to the same consumption convenience.
The little compose that was in the school should be at every household if possible. That is a really great gadget and the a truck would cone pick it up like our trash.

Glad to see so many solutions being developed to close the loop! Here in Manchester food/garden waste is collected curbside for composting.
Don't quite agree with lab grown meat though. Regenerative farming can actually lock more carbon into the soil and improve the land. It is industrialised farming that is the problem. E
i respectfully ask , why not stop the waste , why encourage throwaway culture just to make more machines and call them “plants “,
it will probably take the death of one generation before we really see the next generations take the lead.... the current generations are too used to the cheap, throw away culture....
perhaps if prices increase dramatically for goods, then we may see a change, but I wouldn't hold my breath....

This is the start of reducing and stopping the waste. It is such a massive issue that it is not possible to just stop creating it. We have to start somewhere and this is a good start. Hopefully in the future more people will be on board with this.
We humans are so smart and so DUMB in the same time. We are like stabbing ourselves from the inside and out. And that fact is really bothering, but this vid is very inspiring.

The food can be used for compost, and the other stuff is grind down into tiny chips and mixed with Hemp and you make Lego type bricks that are fire proof for building for starters...
I hold my hands up. I waste a lot of food. Before I can pack away new food, I sometimes have to chuck away the previous. So, I stop shopping. Until my fridge is empty, I won't shop. I still have a freeze freezer and pantry that last a while. Not shopping took a while because I like shopping but I like saving money even more.
I think everyone has a responsibility to do their bit. No one or two organisations can ever remedy the situation. We all need to get involved.

Wow! I wish that I have one of that Energy Digesters. Of course, hopefully in the future, every households, restaurants, and offices are required to have that digester.
3 years ago I saw a boat/ barge with some machinery to come and scoop debris and plastics from the waterways and seas and ocean, we need to give out these machines to poor countries , often plastic pollution ends up in our oceans due to these impoverished countries, we also need to educate them about plastic pollution.
