  • WE ARE SO INCREDIBLY EXCITED!
Huge shoutout to Timberline Sawmill for such a smooth process of getting us the materials for the cabin of our dreams. In this week's video, we received the logs for our cabin package and do all the prep leading up to it!
A few weeks ago, we brought home a burl tree to use as our center post in our cabin by snowmachine. This was a fun adventure away from the cabins while we still have good snow on the ground and ice on the creeks!
Then Becca focused in for a day at the cabins to get some seed started before the storm of cabin building begins. The garden is still going to be very necessary to stay out in the wilderness of Alaska long term! We started with tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, pumpkins, and some flowers! THANK YOU to an amazing subscriber for sending us a seed packet of flowers. We cannot wait for them to bloom and get a nice pot to keep them in!
The day before the logs arrived, we brought down 20-some beetle-kill spruce trees to be used to keep the logs off the ground and then re-used either in the moose fence or throughout the cabin building! We want to do our loft railing with small peeled spruce trees and still have that moose fence to build this spring. Nothing like a good bonfire on a frozen pond to celebrate our logs coming in!
Without further ado, the logs arrive! We had a smooth delivery from Timberline Sawmill and await a few more deliveries of roofing materials, rafters, etc. It is so amazing to finally see the logs that we will call home though.
We obviously have a lot of work to do before we get to the logs. Part of the reason we had them delivered as soon as they were ready was to avoid the road to the homestead getting too muddy or any new snowstorms that could arrive. If they are on-site then we can simply start when we are ready!
Next is SNOW REMOVAL. All caps is necessary. There is some 3-4 feet of snow sitting in our cabin footprint and not only is that a lot of snow but most of it we will have to move by hand! The tractor is going to be very limited on what it can do to plow with the post holes already being dug and hiding under the snow. To the shovels! 😁

How exciting for you guys with the cabin kit arriving. Wohoo on the veggies starts sprouting. When the marigolds blooms die clip them & save them for next year. When the blooms that have been clipped have dried pull them apart & that is the seed. 😊

Becca I’m dying laughing so hard when you said “they should never leave you alone with a chainsaw”. Words no man would ever expect to hear from a woman haha
You go girl!!!! Can’t wait to see the build and what you do with the Burls!
Stay safe! Finally Levi’s dad had real snow shoes! Hope he didn’t get hurt
    God bless.
DIRT TIP: mix a bunch of water and soil, then fill containers and add you seeds

Girl! I am traversing the seed starting right alongside you. So exciting to see little sprouts! (I use a spray bottle to water at first, but am sure you already thot of that.)
Henry is one month younger than my grandson so it’s fun to see him grow too. You sound like my DIL, “I miss my Little Man!” when she has to go into work. 😍 Don’t blink. Your days are about to become much busier with him. So fun!
Great video! I so look forward to Sat. mornings when you post! Stay safe!

May I suggest, that prior to sowing your seeds, you waterfall the pots you are going to use. Another thing you can do is to place your seedlings in plastic bags. It will help to keep a constant temperature

I have found that if I wet the potting mix before putting it in the pot, doesn't float and rearrange the seeds. Just find a big container and put the mix in and wet it down, mix it around like when you're mixing flour with milk kind of.

We tried that same potting soil last summer and weren’t impressed with it at all. So dry and powdery it never would soak up water that well. Next time you are in wasilla, go by Alaska jacks garden supply and get some of the Happy Frog brand of potting soil. It is really good stuff.

Lettuce grows quickly. Mix your dirt and water and make a bunch of mud. Then put it in the grow pots and plant your seed. Dry potting soil is hard to water and get thoroughly wet. Then you can put your plants in a shallow pan and just pour water in the pan. The plants will then suck up the water individually. Down here in Texas, my tomato plants have blooms on them already. Of course, during July through September, we melt due to the heat.

We're using them for posts in our cabin, which is common around here. They can also be carved into a bowl and has very unique wood grain!
