  • In 1976, the GDR continued the ambitious project with the then Soviet Union: the construction of the “Druzhba” pipeline, named after the Russian word for “friendship”. This section of the “Soyuz” natural gas pipeline, which means “union” in Russian, stretched through what is now Ukraine.
This monumental construction project attracted numerous pipeline builders, including a large number of FDJ members. On site, pipes were laid, welded and distribution stations erected, bridges and roads built - a challenge under adverse conditions.
Construction vehicles struggled through the mud, while caterpillar tractors and cranes had to maneuver in tight spaces. Nevertheless, the workers did their best to complete the project successfully.
