I mean.. xenomorph is simply animal doing its thing, wouldn't evil require some level of intention? "All that matters is how a movie makes you feel."
These are the people ruining the western world. A woman can make you fall in love with her by seducing you. It doesn't mean that she was authentically worthy of your love. A movie can manipulate you into "feeling" sad or mad or joyous or whatever (often with music, but there are other tricks as well); that doesn't mean that the movie has actually done the legwork to honestly earn your emotional response. One must push away from a thing emotionally, engage in some level of dispassion, to render real criticism, or the critic must be self-aware enough to disclose that they are unable to do so, in which case what you have is what one might acknowledge as a guilty pleasure.

I watched Literature Devil's most recent X-men video at least twice. It was not a tangent. The video was about how the argument "X was always political/woke" didn't actually hold water. The reason X-men was in the title and thumbnail was because of the recent X-men cartoon and the fact that the X-men are the main go-to when making this argument. Everything Ant describes as tangents is LD collecting evidence for his final point. My takeaway was that the problem is how progressive politics are handled by modern writers rather than progressive politics themselves. "Woke" media has a habit of being rather condescending and talking to its audience like they're stupid children.

There is a theory about why Anthony randomly put in clips that have nothing to do with the point he makes at that time. The comparison is that in articles or text books, they will sometimes include images that are vaguely related to their subject matter, even if they're not directly related to the point being made at the time it appears.
For example, if you gave a history text book page that talks about South African Apartheid, it maybe talking about a particular protest that occurred, and next to that text will be an image of the Prime Minister or even just a random image of protest.
Another example could be an article talking about an anime, and it just has a random image from the show that might not be related to the plot point the article may focus on.
The issue is that Anthony is trying to apply this in a video medium and he should know, and has likely made the argument, that not everything in text form can translate to a visual medium. Such is the example with this.
Anthony either fails to understand that putting a random clip that has nothing to do with your present point does not prove or support it or, and what is more likely, he's so arrogant in his "correctness" that he thinks any clip he plays of these people will be enough to prove they're "media illiterate", when all it does is make his video sloppy and the narrative of his argument inconsistent and hard to follow.
Which might be the purpose, because this video is clearly made for people who already agree with Anthony's horrifically found positions, but anyone who pays attention and listens to his words are easily able to pinpoint how much of a clown he is when he says "media critics are lying to you" as he proceeds to lie about media critics

One thing that makes heroes feel meaningful is seeing them sweat for the ground they gain. It’s a way of remembering that we, too, might find victory and transformation in the midst of our battles.
When we don’t see the hero work for what they get-even if it’s implied to have happened off-screen-it’s just not that relatable.
I also thought Anthony’s assertion that “every” female character is labeled a Mary Sue was either ill-informed or deceptive. The indication is that it comes from misogyny.
I’m a woman and just do not see that as viable. Most critics root for an underdog no matter the gender.
BTW, It would help if Mary Sue type characters in recent memory weren’t written like the snide, superior woman other women try to avoid.

    • @an2qzavok
      @an2qzavok 4 місяці тому

Definition of Mary Sue is quite vague, but I like to think that it's most important characteristic is relationship between character and author, where author sees character as his/her own baby and never lets anything happen to it because of that.
In that sense, modern girlboss female characters are different from Mary Sue because they never see any setbacks for editorial reasons, not because they are author's self-inserts.
Third category of "good at everything" characters are power-fantasies, very common in isekai genre, they are explicitly written that way to suit the reader' tastes.
As such, we got through all three forces participating in creation of art: author, editor and audience.

    Okay. So his argument is:
    1. there is more to movies than just the plot, so mainly criticising the plot is 'bad'.
    2. What is important about movies, is how you feel about it.
Ok, so now let's say the people who make those videos mostly care about just the plot and don't care much about the cinematography, the explosions or the music. Why is it wrong to mainly talk about the plot? If how you feel is what's important about a movie, why can't those people do just that: talk about how they feel and why.
I don't get this guy at all. Pretty much all his arguments make no sense and the constant clips that don't seem to fit the context of what he's saying don't make things much better. It's like I'm listening to someone who's having a psychotic episode.

When I make Steam reviews about games, I intentionally avoid topics where it's all a matter of opinion, like graphical fidelity. I'm not going to give a broken game a pass just because it looks good. a 0 / 100 does not become 50 / 100 just because it's really pretty, because I think it has entirely missed the most important aspects of the medium. Ignoring plot holes is the same thing. A photo may be a medium that's only a 2D visual, but a movie adds to that an element of chronological progression and sound. If you ignore those aspects, you're not reviewing a movie. You're reviewing a photo taken of a movie.

This video shows a important lesson, he’ll claim people like Lit Dev, a writer who actually articulates his arguments and defines his terms that’s informative with the topic at hand is some kind of grifting, lying, pretentious scumbag.
When people Ant used Lily Orchard as “a political balance,” or the critics he gets support from such as Pillar of Garbage(a guy who made a video about Squidville being a 1950s enthostate) shows a clear contrast compared to LD’s videos that there’s no way Ant or anyone for that matter can find them more “insightful” or “better” unless he too is either immoral or conspiracy brained, likely both. It’s all a means of having your feelings or ideology validated than giving you anything that’s informative, nuanced or respects your intellect; so in other words “don’t ask questions, just consume products.”
Like come on, Pillar of Garbage says “homosocial away together space” and expects you to know what that means when he says it.

Anita's writers weren't quite careful enough. The video is wrong about objectification. When you program an AI to create behaviors in an NPC entity, give that entity a name, a voice, visual appearance, an occupation and implication of a life outside the immediate context of the player's interaction, and in the example of Hitman even morally judge the player based on their interaction with that NPC, you are not objectifying a woman. You are *anthropomorphizing an object.* The actual literal polar opposite of objectification.

I loved the point when the writer-guy tried to provide an example of 'good media analysis' and its just him loosely quoting Blade Runner when Batty literally says the point. All of this to make a category mistake when he asserts that the emotions of a character are the most important when these emotions are informed by the events the caused them. This is how characters appear 'real'. There is a word for emotions that don't rationally follow from their causes. It's called "Hysteria" or "mania".
Using his understanding of media, you could theoretically just have a series of random still of people happy, sad, scared, and angry for a duration and that would comprise one of the best movies of all time.

None of that has to be driven by politics, but it feels like different politics underlies Anthony’s complaints in his video. I would argue anything that is trying to evoke an emotion is manipulative, inherently its trying to manipulate you into feeling something you otherwise would not. But it can be honest or dishonest. Having characters you're supposed to empathize with feel emotions for example is a way of manipulating the audience to feel a certain way, a scene like Urameshi's wake in yu yu hakusho is full of this, we dont really know yusuke enough to actually be sad about his death so we show people he knew crying, we show kuwabara not believe and charge in asking for a fight before being dragged away crying. But its also not telling you anything wrong, a young man is dead these people would feel this way. But another case is a scene from falcon and the winter soldier where walker kills a flag smasher. Everyone is reacting with shock and disbelief, falcon and bucky treat walker like he just murdered someone, but previously in the scene were shown this flag smasher kill walkers partner and he also just nearly killed bystanders. It makes no sense for bucky or falcon to act this way to walker so the audience is being falsley manipulated to feel that walker is the wrong by having our portagonists criticize him.
Both of these are manipulative, but only one is under false pretenses

I think the worst part is, this isn't just a "nerd fight." He attempted bad faith strategies to try and make people on the opposite ideological spectrum from him seem either stupid, illiterate, or just untrustworthy and deceptive.
It hit me when I was reading one of his community posts and he mentioned Pillar of Garbage and In Praise of Shadows, and he DEFENDS IPoS and PoG and says, "I think I covered the same subject a little bit more delicately/better."
His comparison of his video to IPoS already shows he doesn't disagree with IPoS' video or views that Zane espouses, and he pointed people to their videos to watch. Anthony sits in an echo chamber, says it's good people are coming down on his video because it means "He's right and they're not", commiting the very sins he says the "other side" is doing.

6:53 I kinda remember this Tumblr level article. I think it was another in a long line of 'Men cannot be close friends, your either work acquaintances or your barely holding back the gay floodgates' assertions.

I've never seen someone obsess this much over Literature Devil
And, as I wrote on EFAP's coverage of the same video, he continually holds up _commentary channels_ as "youtube critics"; it's bizarre and disingenuous

"Thinking for yourself" is not a free action, and with how much C O N T E N T is coming out every day, it's literally impossible to watch all of it, you have to filter somehow.

7:50 - oh all my goodness, IIRC, he cut out Justsomeguy’s very next sentence, “it would really help your case if I didn’t suck duck”.

I haven't finished the video yet, but I noticed he seems a bit scared to go after Redlettermedia. Why is he so scared of an alcoholic middle aged man, a dude that ages backwards who loves gore, and a man with crippling diabetes and AAAAAIIIIDDDS?

Just schizo ranting about people he hates.

I know these people so well I don't even need to go past the 30 minute mark, because it is so painfully repetitive.
-They people dislike critics, except it is okay to criticize the critics despite that being both an Oxymoron and Hypocritical.
-They dislike pointing out the problems with things because they just want to consume and enjoy what they want. And like someone who eats nothing but candy, when you point out it isn't that healthy or good for you, they get mad. Not because it is wrong, but because they don't want to admit that it is true.
-They will criticize people taking clips, lines or parts of something out of context while they themselves take things out of context and cherry pick to make their points look stronger.
-They will say the critics are trying to make people think like them or appear smarter or more correct, but it is the exact same thing they are doing in their own video.
-They react badly to criticism that isn't positive. Mostly because they have a thin skin and fragile opinions.
-Finally they will try to pull the "This is subjective/your opinion, and it is not true/fact." Which in itself, is a subjective opinion.
If these kinds of people were something, it would be a benign tumor. They don't really pose any threat to anything, all they do is serve as an example of something that makes everyone looking at it uncomfortable. Your better off just cutting them off and forgetting about them.

This guy yells "bad faith bad faith!" when his format is pretty much exactly the same as Liberal Viewer, who takes hours of seconds long political clips from MSM news and edits them together alongside his own narration to create his own personal alternate reality. I'm convinced that guys like this and Liberal Viewer are legit mentally ill with malevolent intent.
