I mean what else did you expect? The interview took place in India, with China as an aggressive neighbor. The main purpose of the interview was to explore India's position in all of this from Mearsheimer's perspective and to gain insight into conflicts in various parts of the world simultaneously. Also, your interpretation of Mearsheimer's comments about India is inaccurate. He explicitly stated that India should and would not fully engage itself, considering its economic inferiority compared to China, also based on its current and past foreign policy decisions. He also made it clear that India's rise if it happens means India is on the menu from both China's and US's end.

As a Chinese, I carefully watched this interview twice. Milzhammer is wise and humorous. He preserved most of the dignity and confidence of the Indian female journalist and the audience present. Undoubtedly, India is rapidly developing. India will become a better India.
I hope Indians who see this message can realize: India does not need to compare with China, nor is there any comparability. China has gone through about 200 years of brutal social turmoil, conflict, and integration process, from a top agricultural civilization to a relatively advanced industrial civilization (but still far from the top, there is still quite a long way to go). The cost of this process was the accidental deaths of tens of millions of people, including my grandfather. When India has not experienced these and is unwilling to pay a huge price to unify cognition and improve execution, India cannot become the second China.
Overall, India will become a better India, and China will become a better China, but there is no comparability between the two. Indians who disagree with the above views, you do not need to argue with me. You can come to China and see it with your own eyes instead of listening to your media propaganda.

I'm an overseas Chinese born and educated in Kolkata, India, and has been living in Taiwan for over 30 years.
First, John is a guest, probably paid, so he was very diplomatic in trying very hard not to hurt the host or Indian's pride/feelings with the bare truth! If you're smart, you'll clearly see between the lines in many of his answers!
John is an American, so, he's not going to trash the US and all it's failings and wrong decisions the past 30~40 years, that's caused it's downfall today!
Check history, even with far superior Navy and Air forces, US was badly beaten by the Chinese Army, weaken by internal fighting, and lost the Korean war - thus North and South Korea! Same with the Vietnam war and how the US troops ran via helicopter from their VN Embassy! We see a repeat on VN in the recent Afghanistan war, and I don't see a good outcome in Iraq or Syria! So, basically the US cannot fight any war, but fights only those countries that can't defend themselves! Even with all the advance weaponry, NATO, basically the US, is losing the Ukraine war against Russia, so there's NO WAY, US will EVER DARE to confront China! Haven't you noticed US has moved their first line of defense - Korea, Japan, even Guam back, and as far as Australia!
As for Taiwan, China don't need to use one bullet or kill one person, just block off TW from the North and South for a month or so, and TW will be on it's knees with no gas, coal, etc. Can you imagine no more electricity, internet, etc.!?!?
Sharma, you can't even control the Bay of Bengal, India suddenly controls the Malacca Strait! What a joke!
India, look around you, and yourself! You have conflicts with all your neighbors, a huge un-educated population, very bad infrastructure, serious inner conflicts, and the list goes on and on ....
STOP feeling jealous of China's growth and advancement! Learn from China! And finally, remove the pipe dream of trying to contain China with the US! CHINA WILL CONTINUE IT'S PATH AND WILL GROW STRONGER, NO MATTER WHAT!

This is jingoistic take. If you are abreast with the current situation in India, you will see how rapidly the infra is improving. To say that China will keep rising from strength to strength is a superstitious and a fanciful dream. Nobody knows the future and China itself has internal problems that it does not let out into the world.

Exact quote: "Word should be gotten to Nixon that if Thieu meets the same fate as Diem, the word will go out to the nations of the world that it may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal."
By which he meant that if the US abandoned their ally Thieu, it would be a disaster because countries wouldn't trust the US as a friend anymore.
Today, of course, we know it is indeed as dangerous to be a friend of the US as its enemy (watch Germany f.eg.). Sadly, the US have a long standing tradition of turning their back to their 'friends' whenever it's in their interest.

A truly great power does not ask others, "Am I considered a great power?" and They do not ask if you are at war with another country. "What can I do for you?"
For example, China, from its leaders to its academics, has always emphasized that it is a developing country and that its most important task is to improve the living standards of its people.
However, let us not forget that this country, in its second year of existence, boldly took the initiative to attack the seventeen-nation coalition led by the most powerful nation on earth and achieved its political goals.

That isn’t democracy. You may indeed have a valid point that in terms of societal improvement and satisfaction that China is doing better than many democracies, but democracy means free and fair voting, free speech, ability of the public (not their leaders) to replace/vote out candidates. So no, China is not somehow more democratic. You don’t know what a democracy is. This does not however take your point that in terms of Human development index improvement, China has done a great job…but it is still far cry from developed democracies.

@@jameslawrence5828 Who told you that? Democracy is more than just running an election. Few years ago, a Princeton, Northwestern university study showed, for the last 20+ years, US policy disproportionately favor the corporate donor class, not average voters.... What is the point of voting when the outcome don't even serve the voters?(by design) For example, Japan, people can vote, but can it changes their national policy and say no to the US ? The answer is no because Japan is being militarily occupied by the US. Their voting system is a clown show, same to S. Korea, Taiwan, and the entire Europe.
For Indian's elections, with the amount of corruption, does that really mean anything? Most of the population is not even educated enough to vote. How many Indians have some basic knowledge of the complicated geopolitics?
Most of the elections on the planet are just rhetoric, political show. It's either the candidates already pre-selected for you to "vote" or all of the choices so bad you ended up not voting at all.
In order for the election system to be effective, you need to have informed voters, but with the amount of mis-infomation produced by the mass media between each election cycles, do you think the voter really can vote for his own interest? the answer is obvious.
There are so many problems in the current election systems that no country has the prerequisite to run it properly.
And to think China decision making body does not consult others is ridiculous. You think XiJin Ping just running the show all by himself not consulting other party members and experts? CPC members have it's own voting system. In China, if you want to participate in politics, proof yourself competent first by doing well in school, then apply for a government job. You have to start from low, understand the basic needs of regular people, not like the west which politicians are billionaire family members or legacy political family members, being manipulated their way in and call it a democracy. Colonial toxin still remain in India, and it operates some what like the west, political system run by thugs that serve themself at the cost of the society. (Independent gained from begging is not true independent, true independent is only gained by violent revolution that up roots the old interest group)
Sometime watching these political talk shows from India and the west really entertaining as they always like to mention China China China, but clueless of how it works.

I am really surprised that Indians believe in democracy. It has neither solved the corruption problem in India nor the inefficiency problem in India. Democracy is just a way of dividing your country into many interest groups, and the United States can control one or two groups. even we need some conception like democracy, the real goal of voters are benefits. if your government can protect your interest, why you should go to vote for someone.
Have you observed how many countries in the world first became election democratic and then became wealthy?
Western countries are rich because they have colonized the world in various ways. This Indian feels it deeply. Indians, think about how much of Britain's wealth comes from India?
In Asia, South Korea, Singapore, and Chinese Taiwan all had long-term autocracies that enabled rapid economic development and then gradually realized election democracy.
The biggest support democracy needs is to have benefits that can be distributed to voters. If Taiwan and South Korea do not have huge trade surpluses, benefits cannot be distributed to the people before the election. This election will definitely become more and more chaos. like US election now.

Palki tried really hard to guide John acknowledge India is a super power, one of the poles, and even more superior than China. but John fails her every time😂😂

Extremely interesting geo-political conversation. Palki is excitingly digging into John's uniquely realistic expert calculus of US, Russia, China and India: particularly in military and economic powers besides, of course, international diplomatic compulsions. Hope Palki would come up with more such videos. Kudos to Palki and John both.

Mearsheimer brings good perspective. Even critical of his own country when they are wrong. Palki's content writers should learn from him.

India could join in the possible war in South China Sea? Indian army clearly knew how dangerous it would be, during the war in 1962 New Deli was in the state of emergency because Chinese army was only 200 km away.
