Congrats on surviving Old Rag TWICE! We hiked it 2 years ago when we were 60, 62. While it was fun and a challenge, it’s a one and done for us. On to other adventures!! Safe travels!!
Out of all the videos made about Old Rag, this one is by far my favorite. My girlfriend and I are hiking this next Sunday and I couldn’t be more excited! Both for the hikes and for making my own rendition of an old rag hiking video!
Great job for going back to a hike you’ve completed in the past to reconquer it with more strength and experience! We really enjoyed seeing some of your day with van life. It reminded us of boat life and the benefits of traveling with your home: you can have a variety of incredible views when cooking and eating dinner. Thanks for sharing this part of your lives with us 😊
Wow! That was an impressive trek up Old Rag!👊🏼I continue to marvel at you two as you take on these hikes!🙀 Seeing Adam use his Herculean strength to hold that boulder up just so you could pass was awe inspiring!🤣 You 2 have definitely earned some serious downtime after all of this year’s adventures! 🧘🏻♀️🧘🏻♂️(Sweet Kona too!) Congrats on 41! 🎉
Congratulations on scrambling up Old Rag Mountain. I've been to Shenandoah before but only spent a few days, and that summit wasn't really on my radar before. It is now. Thanks for the awesome video.
This looks awesome. We were supposed to do this hike when in Shenandoah, but it was pouring rain and - nope. Thanks for the renewed motivation to return.
I go out to Shenandoah every year and I always say there are no bad pictures there. It makes me happy to see you guys do a trail that I'm not equipped to do. Glad you were able to enjoy it more this time. I've only caught the sunrise in Shenandoah, I definitely need to be there for sunset one day.
You two are my favorite "rock" stars!!!!! So cool. 😎And what a gorgeous relaxing sunset view! Agree... way better than trying to see it between the heads of so many other peeps. Happy Travels!
Old Rag is beautiful in the fall! I did the hike six years ago and really enjoyed seeing it again (without the hard work). I really liked hearing your thoughts as you went up the scramble, and the sunset was pretty, too. Enjoy some down time and thanks again!
We think you had the best seat in the house for the sunset! Beautiful views! The first time we traveled on the Shenandoah Skyline in our vehicle, we saw two cubs...so cute!
It’s pretty hard to beat having that view outside your “front door” 🙌🏼 So jealous you saw cubs! We wanted to see a bear so badly while out east, but it never happened!
Nice job on the scramble on Old Rag Mtn.! I didn’t know scrambling was a thing until I started watching your videos. A bit off topic but as a frequent traveler myself I’d be curious to get insights into your non-hiking workouts you do out of the van.
incredible layers during that sunset view! Gorgeous...never been there but can't wait to check it out someday. One of my good friends just got back from there around the same time you were there...said it was beautiful but busy. It's been so fun following 2021 A+K....cheers to wrapping up this year and relaxing a bit before 2022.
That sunset was SO beautiful! Best one we have seen in a while! We were surprised the hike wasn't busier since it's one of the most popular (the parking lots weren't full), but I guess it's because everyone was on Skyline Drive lol! We unintentionally timed our visit when the fall colors started to emerge. We assumed the trees would've been dead!
Beautiful scenery in that part of the USA. When you head back west consider the Asheville area for a stop. Nice town, and the Biltmore is worth touring. We're at 39 NP's, mostly overlapping with yours.
I hiked Old Rag several times as a kid and young teenager but never got that it was supposed to be unusually challenging. I guess I didn't know any better. Love that the blue guide marks through the scramble look exactly the same as they did in the 80s.
You guys did so well with the filming in the narrow scrambling sections. I adored watching you guys on this hike. Very much up my street with the scrambling and I didn't realise this park was so close to Washington DC. Annoyingly I've visited the city twice, but never made it to the park! Loved the drive too, the autumnal colours were beautiful. We did the same thig in Rocky Mountain, very jet lagged as we'd flown in the night before, we opted to do a scenic drive. The chefs toss at 14:30 was very impressive. My students love to try doing it and it always ends badly! When you were after an adjective at the end... not that you were eating / describing food, but are we allowed to set you guys challenges? In 2022 when eating food, use the adjective 'scrum-diddly-umptious' as though it's a perfectly normal word to use and just keep talking afterwards 🤣 🙌 I look forward to the DC vlog(s?), I love watching your videos when I've been to the places and get to reminisce!
You would love this hike! It's so much fun and feels like a jungle gym! We did lose one pepper or potato on the toss, but that's not bad, right?! 😜 I was JUST thinking of using that word today when we were finishing up edits to the DC vlog. A bakery we visited had that word on their wall and I was thinking how we need to throw that in sometime. So challenge accepted!
Great video, it's always fun to watch people hike up Old Rag for the first (or second) time. I'm originally from Luray, about 10 miles NW from there, and I've climbed the mountain at least 300 times, mostly from the three summers I spent giving guided tours. It was always funny watching little kids handle the toughest parts of the rock scramble better than experienced adult hikers.
Ah, Old Rag Mountain. Love this hike (mostly). The scramble is so fun and has a quite a few unique features and some challenging spots. Great job filming this one as I bet it might have been somewhat tricky. I think you gave a real nice overview of the trail and highlighted what one could expect if they were to attempt it. Excellent work! The last time I did Old Rag was about 2.5 years ago with my oldest son. We started at a tradition that year where I would take a solo camping trip with each of my boys at least once a year. That year we did Old Rag and some of the battlefields in Maryland. He was 12 at the time and rocked it but that endless fire road wore him down. Slog is a great choice of words for it.
Hello Adventurers😊😊😊, Old Ragged Mountain...WOW!! So much rock scrambling...no...So much BOULDER SCRAMBLING! Y'all are INSANE😊😊😊😊. I have driven through Skyline Drive and the views are AMAZING. I can't wait to see the next video👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.
Was looking forward to you two being in my neck of the woods ever since you posted about being in DC. I was crossing my fingers that y’all would venture out to Old Rag-so happy to see you did (a second time)! I love this hike and find it a lot of fun. Hope you guys enjoyed a much deserved break with friends and family ☺️!
Guys! Messics is 2 miles from my house! Y'all totally could have crashed! So glad you could swing by neck of the woods!! Yeah our fall colors did not come out till very late this year! Thank you for coming to our area! Shawn's Smokehouse BBQ in Warrenton is good. Next time your in the area I will make some recommendations!
Oh wow, so close!! We were super happy the fall colors were delayed. We fully expected a dead tree hike and seeing the foliage was such an awesome surprise!
Wow, what a hike up Old Rag!!! That looked pretty intense at times but totally awesome! I love the views....and the views from Skyline drive at sunset!!! Wow, so so gorgeous! Btw, your supper looked pretty good! Have fun with your friends!
Of all your vids, this has been my most favorite by far. I’m short as I had mentioned in a past post in your page, so to hear you say “I need help” puts this hike into perspective. I most likely cannot go it alone, and now know I’ll need help. That dinner you made!! The colors!! I was carb loading while watching this and sighed when I realized mine was boring lol. You two are fun. I’m glad YT algorithm led me to the Adventures of A+K.
We definitely wanted to stress that not everyone should attempt this, but I also get a bit nervous on hikes sometimes, so some may think I’m just overreacting haha but it’s a tough one! We’re glad you enjoyed the video and that UA-cam sent you our way! 🥰
Holy Cow,,, You awesome guys are in our neighborhood!!! Found you guys last year when I was looking for information on Delta Lake Hike. You bring amazing content that inspires me to travel for hiking. One of my favorite stop, when I do Old Rag, is to stop for my coffee or sandwich in Sperryville Before & After cafe. It's a very cool place.
We had really wanted to stop at that coffee shop Sperryville! But we were spending wayyy too much money with our friends haha, so next time for sure! Thank you so much for watching!
Way to scamper up those rocks! lol Another beautiful hike in the books! Love West Virginia, such a beautiful state and we loved skyline drive when we made the trek. Lots of deer and wildlife along the way. Colors were beautiful, what a wonderful life you two are experiencing right now!
Old rag is in sperryville virginia, I’m from rappahannock which is the county this section is in. So cool seeing so many people love my hometown mountain so much. I live in West Virginia now but go home frequently and still see the various out of stater tags out my way knowing usually what they’re there for. Lol 😆
We are always impressed by your hikes, equally we are impressed that you are able to produce such amazing footage along the way! Beautiful video! Thanks for taking us along! ~Cara 😊
So happy for you both!! Simply gorgeous views & you really do a great job showing them! 👏 for someone who doesn't travel much anymore these are uplifting to watch! Thank you & enjoy the sights! Please ,if time, in DC show the WW11 Memorial.
Really enjoyed your hike. I live 20 miles from Shenandoah and when family & friends visit we head to the park. At 80, I've given up the scramble, but I love the hikes and photography. Hope you enjoy DC, but crowds & traffic are a "bear".
I really enjoyed this episode! It was cool to see a little bit of van life when you sat down to eat. Also, I love the rock scrambling! It turns an ordinary hike into an adventure. My favorite hike in Sedona was Cathedral Rock because it had a little bit of rock scrambling and I totally did not expect that!
We hope to show more of van life in the future! It's so normal to us now that we forget that it may be interesting to others. Cathedral Rock surprised us as well with the scrambling. That hike is SO awesome!
@@AdventuresofAplusK Yeah, we did a lot of hikes in Sedona and Cathedral Rock was our favorite. Looking forward to more van life sequences in the future!
Just gotta say this video was really fun! In fact, it was great... awesome... and yes even cool! LOL. Very enjoyable video. I love this area of Virginia. My buddy Mike and I hiked the AT through Shenandoah a few years ago... and it was spectacular. Love the autumn leaves you got to see. Old Rag is beautiful as well!
Lol! All the adjectives!!! That is so awesome! The friend we were visiting had done a week long trip on the AT through there as well and we were bummed we couldn’t join her!
Hi! this year I´ll be running the Marine Corps Marathon and after that i will spend the whole week with my wife around Shenadoah NP, just found your video because we want to do some trail routes, thank you for share the experience! now i´m really motivated and scared 😂😂😂 cheers from Mexico 🙌
Thank you for this video and a question (and apologies in advance for the length): my husband and I are also on a quest to do all the NPs but are still very early in that quest. We've been to Acadia 2x and to Great Smokey Mountains. We'll be going to Shenandoah this year in June. Early in our NP research (You Tube is a godsend!), having viewed other videos about Old Rag, I had already put it on the "Above Our Skill Grade" list. However, on our second trip to Acadia, we accidently did the rock scramble side of South Bubble to go up and I am still shocked we made it to the summit! So now as we prep for June and watching this video, suddenly doing OR doesn't seem so hard, LOL! Am I mistaken or at least from what I saw in your video, are there no areas on the OR ascent like that one flat rock face "pull up" point right before you summit SB? Because if so, I think I can actually move OR to the "Want To Try" list -- descending down the easy side of course as we did for SB, LOL!!!
Hi! If you conquered the South Bubble then you can do Old Rag. The scrambling parts are fairly similar. You could always get up to Old Rag from the fire road as well. It's much longer and just following a bumpy road through the forest so it isn't as exciting, but no scrambling required there. Hope that helps!
@@AdventuresofAplusK Very much a big help, thank you! I was already planning for us to do Old Rag the way you did --- hardest part first then congratulate ourselves with the easier descent just as we did with South Bubble. So thank you again for the inspiration!!
As beautiful as Shenandoah is in the fall, the most amazing time to visit in my opinion is in the spring. This whole part of the country is just magical with flowers and greenery in the month of April. By the way you need to come back here to Minnesota to pick up Voyageurs NP!
@@AdventuresofAplusK It can really vary from year to year depending on the weather, and where you are. We were there April 22nd 2019, so late April.. The highest elevations were dead but lower areas were glorious!.
Great video. Thanks as always for sharing it. Adam, I’ve noticed lately that you’re not rolling down the driver’s side window at the NPS entrance booths. Broken?
Hahaha good catch! The driver side window won't roll back up easily if we roll it down. Adam just got off the phone with Mercedes to get it fixed actually haha
I heard you haven't done old rag unless you've reclined in the completely comfie arm-chair on top of the 7th boulder at the second nob on top... basically the high point. There are pools eroded into the tops of several boulders up top, the one in question is accessible on what is the far side, if approaching from the typical trail to the top. Awesome 360 views. Wildflowers (trilium, geranium, violet, mayapple, anemone, bellwort coming soon, and something couldn't id, looked like pitcher plant, with a stem growing from hole, with cluster of flower buds on top kind of like a queen ann's lace /lantana cross). April 21, '24.
We went to New River Gorge back in 2020, right before it became a national park and loved it! We have a video from there and weren’t able to stop this time. And we actually haven’t heard of Mumbo sauce, so unfortunately we didn’t get to try it.
How does this compare to your hikes in Acadia? I'm worried I'll be to scared to hike the Bee Hive or the Precipist trail. I've done Old Rag before. Super fun! I love watching you guys! Thanks for sharing with us!
I’d say that Precipice is scarier because it’s more exposed, but Old Rag is harder because you don’t have the rungs to help you up. But we didn’t find Precipice to be too scary and we think if you can do Old Rag you can definitely do it!
Funny that this was my wife and I's first "big" hike that got us hooked on hiking. Not sure why we chose a 9.5 mile hike for the first one. I recall the final 1/2 mile I could hardly walk down that gravel pathway.
I'd like to think that despite hating it the first time, it is what caused us to get much more outdoorsy. Just months later we moved to Seattle and hiked every weekend! But we also wonder why we chose this as the first one too lol!
Love your content. Yall are amazing. I have a question do you think or recommend me doing this loop with my husky? My only concern is if there's any climbing where I would have to carry him through the scrambles. He is an awesome hiker and my hiking buddy...
I’m glad you got to hike it again! Looked like your body had to be put in weird positions to scramble. Looked beautiful! The drive also looked beautiful and a little bit more relaxing than the hike! 😂 Oh, I like the 🎶!
@@AdventuresofAplusK I'm planning to hike this soon and I've read that there are ticks there, so I thought I would need to treat my gears. Anyway, great video as always!
Do you bruise easily? I find that whenever I do these types of scrambling, the next day, my knees are all bruised up. Hopefully it's not the case for you. Old Rag looks fun but the 9.5 miles would have been a deal breaker for us. We were in Shenandoah mid October and we did Bearfence Mountain for our rock scrambling activity.
For someone who is not so fond of heights, how doable is the rock scramble? I'm an average hiker (I've hiked many summits in Acadia, but not Precipice or Beehive).
I moved from Tucson after nearly 20 yrs there to Asheville but seriously considered the Shenandoah Valley - may still happen someday but content for now. Old Rag is a butt-kicker, for sure :)
We, like you, have much love for Shenandoah. We chose it for our wedding last year and said our vows at the bottom of Dark Hollow Falls. We've been to the park a few times and haven't had the chance to do Old Rag, thanks for taking us along.

So happy for you both!! Simply gorgeous views & you really do a great job showing them! 👏 for someone who doesn't travel much anymore these are uplifting to watch! Thank you & enjoy the sights! Please ,if time, in DC show the WW11 Memorial.
Thank you so much! And we will have some clips from the memorial in the next video 😄
Wow! What gorgeous views!! I’ve been to there and drove the whole Skyline Drive! But not in the fall that was just beautiful!
We weren’t expecting there to be any colors! So it was a very nice surprise!
I always enjoy your adventurous videos. Safe travels.
Thank you for watching Joe!
Living only 2 hours away I can’t believe I’ve never done this one. Gonna give it a go next weekend hopefully some nice fall foliage to see
Really enjoyed your hike. I live 20 miles from Shenandoah and when family & friends visit we head to the park. At 80, I've given up the scramble, but I love the hikes and photography. Hope you enjoy DC, but crowds & traffic are a "bear".
Driving in DC was stressful at times haha, but we shockingly found a good spot to park the van, which was a big worry!
Definitely looks like the sunset at from the van was pretty nice 😉 Happy travels friends.
It was one of the best ones in a long time! 😍
That looks like such a fun hike!
What a beautiful park! Definitely want to visit someday! Great video as always!
Thank you Sarah! There is SO much to do there!
There were some awful tight squeezes in this video 😉 I always just love your hikes !! This video was exciting 🤩🤩
It was tough haha!
@1:38 #Dork ... hahah Great hike. Love seeing you guys XP stuff. It keeps my list growing. Cheers!
Always a dork!
Hi! this year I´ll be running the Marine Corps Marathon and after that i will spend the whole week with my wife around Shenadoah NP, just found your video because we want to do some trail routes, thank you for share the experience! now i´m really motivated and scared 😂😂😂 cheers from Mexico 🙌
That's awesome! Good luck in the marathon!
@@AdventuresofAplusK 🙌🙌🙌
Excellent episode. I will now hike Old Rag.
As long as you're prepared you'll love it!
Spectabulous
Love that word!
Hardest working couple on UA-cam 👏👏fab photography as always 👌
You’re too kind! ❤️❤️
SPECTACULAR :) Video,,,, we are heading there in early May, thanks for the video
Thanks Bill! Have a great time!
I
Ove Shenandoah National Park….always wanted to do the Rag Mon hike! Beautiful!
It is a great hike! We hope you can someday!
We love Old Rag! If you're heading south by way of blueridge Parkway, I'm sure Grandfather Mountain and Macrae Peak are on your list! It's a must.
Unfortunately we were only able to explore this park and DC this time, but we have driven the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC before and it’s gorgeous!
In Australia we call it 'Rock Hopping' loving your content guys. One day I'll be a full time traveller...
Rock hopping! I love it!
As beautiful as Shenandoah is in the fall, the most amazing time to visit in my opinion is in the spring. This whole part of the country is just magical with flowers and greenery in the month of April.
By the way you need to come back here to Minnesota to pick up Voyageurs NP!
Our last trip was in April and everything was dead haha, so maybe we timed it wrong?
@@AdventuresofAplusK It can really vary from year to year depending on the weather, and where you are. We were there April 22nd 2019, so late April.. The highest elevations were dead but lower areas were glorious!.
Thanks for sharing . Love everything about it :)
Thank you for watching!
Nice route, I’m pretty sure you will love Washington DC. Enjoy!!!
We definitely enjoy visiting DC! Lots to see!
@@AdventuresofAplusK Great. I hope they can fix it for you.
Cross your fingers it’s covered by our extended warranty 🤞🏼 The dealer loves to nickel and dime us haha
@@AdventuresofAplusK🤞
Good job guys! I have done this hike, it is a rough one!
There used to be a furniture store on the way. It always made me laugh because the sign read "Antique furniture made daily"
Hmmm 🤔 lol
Love the views, great job!
Thank you!
Looks amazing
Took our group 3 hours moving time, one bottle is enough if overcast and 55F and you don't run too much. Easy hike if you don't have liabilities.
Aw man we'll have to go back and check out that arm chair! Sounds like a beautiful time!
Did you find the rock scramble dangerous or just physically challenging?
More physically challenging than dangerous in our opinion
any chance you'll head towards New river gorge national park? Hopefully you get the Mumbo sauce while eating in DC!!!
We went to New River Gorge back in 2020, right before it became a national park and loved it! We have a video from there and weren’t able to stop this time. And we actually haven’t heard of Mumbo sauce, so unfortunately we didn’t get to try it.
Hiking Old Rag this spring or summer. Would my running shoes be adequate for this hike?
I’m sure they’d be sufficient. Hiking books or trail runners like Altra (what Adam wears) would be a bit better, but I’m sure you’ll be fine
Where did you get the national park pass holder that you attached to the rear view mirror? Another great video btw, thanks for bringing us along.
I think it comes with the pass! But we lost ours and they just gave us a new one for free when at the booth at Acadia I believe.
@@AdventuresofAplusK LOL. Wife just watched your video also. Now were headed to Old Rag on Saturday. Contagious
Hahaha love it! Have fun!
Love your content. Yall are amazing. I have a question do you think or recommend me doing this loop with my husky? My only concern is if there's any climbing where I would have to carry him through the scrambles. He is an awesome hiker and my hiking buddy...
Hi Oscar! Dogs are not allowed on this trail (it’s a national park rule)
I’m glad you got to hike it again! Looked like your body had to be put in weird positions to scramble. Looked beautiful! The drive also looked beautiful and a little bit more relaxing than the hike! 😂 Oh, I like the 🎶!
No wonder I hurt myself the first time I did this hike! 😂
Ahh. In college I use to go climb old rag all the time.
Super fun hike!
This is awesome! Did you treat your gears with permethrin before hiking this trail?
I've never heard of permethrin so no we did not. Thanks and thanks for watching!
Thankfully not really! I do find random bruises sometimes, but not usually after hiking thankfully.
Thank you for a great video! What is that app that you used to measure time, elevation gain etc.? Thank you!
That is the AllTrails app. It is a game changer!
@@AdventuresofAplusK thank you!
For someone who is not so fond of heights, how doable is the rock scramble? I'm an average hiker (I've hiked many summits in Acadia, but not Precipice or Beehive).
I’d say it’s super doable! The scramble isn’t exposed to drop offs. If you’re comfortable climbing on all fours a bit you’ll be ok
I moved from Tucson after nearly 20 yrs there to Asheville but seriously considered the Shenandoah Valley - may still happen someday but content for now. Old Rag is a butt-kicker, for sure :)
Asheville is awesome! You have so many amazing hiking spots near you!
@@AdventuresofAplusK, yep lots :)
As a native Virginian, I’ve heard of Old Rag but never been there. Looks like great fun; however, what about snakes in all those rocks?
We haven't seen snakes on either of our visits, but I'm sure they're out there!
Here's an adjective, stupendous
Love it!
Pillowy, maybe? 😉
Always pillowy!
Shenandoah was my 2nd NP too!😄
Twins!!
Do you think you can post your backpacking equipment for a trip. I want to start backpacking and you guys seem experienced haha.
We have all of our gear listed on our website! And also a backpacking packing list 🙌🏼
@@AdventuresofAplusK Ohh did not know you guys had a website. Definitely will check it out! Thank you for the reply!
We’re working on making a better gear list for everything, but the majority of the items are on our resources page. Hopefully that helps!
We, like you, have much love for Shenandoah. We chose it for our wedding last year and said our vows at the bottom of Dark Hollow Falls. We've been to the park a few times and haven't had the chance to do Old Rag, thanks for taking us along.
That is incredible! If we were getting married now, we’d totally get married out in nature like that
@@AdventuresofAplusK pretty epic we must say, then we spent our honeymoon hiking in the Smokies . ua-cam.com/video/EzfgEPP7ORo/v-deo.html
What kind of hiking boots do wear Adam ?
He wears Altra Superior trail runners! He loves them because they aren't bulky like boots, but have great grip for the trail. amzn.to/3iNL1bU
LOVE!!! This is def on my list now! So K, how tall are you?
I am 5'5" I think! Adam is 6 ft!
