    This is a big contrast to when my dad used to drive our '54 Packard out there every summer from suburban Chicago, leaving pre-dawn Saturday and arriving at Glacier Basin Campground Sunday afternoon to find we had a choice of many vacant campsites with stunning views of Longs, Hallet's, etc. Those were the golden years of national parks. That said, it's really great to see you guys enduring the crowds and bad weather (we had that, too, way back then), and making the most of a great day. Your foodie adventures are fun to watch, too! Safe travels always, guys, and thanks for taking the time to shoot and edit all your wonderful videos. :-)

    • @AdventuresofAplusK

      It's pretty crazy how busy some outdoor areas have gotten! We are glad that more people are loving the outdoors, but it also does have negative side effects. We are happy the park has a permit system to try to reduce the crowds and damage some, although, that doesn't fix all problems. Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words!

      '54 Packard - cool!

    • @gmaneis
      @gmaneis 2 роки тому +1

      @@StephenandAndie Thank you! Also super cool was the fact that we had no cell phones, no i-pad games to play, no internet, no car air con, no interstates, and no fast food joints. The smell of alfalfa processing plants in Nebraska was overwhelming since we had to keep the windows down as the car pounded along the concrete in 90 degree temps. Thinking about it makes me really appreciate what we have now, and what the first Europeans experienced a century before our first trip in 1957.

    Not going to lie... I miss the days when permits & reservations weren't required going into parks so frequently. That said... looks like it was worth it this time! These Colorado videos have been amazing albeit slightly torturous. Can't wait to experience Colorado for the first time ourselves!

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  2 роки тому +5

      We have mixed feelings on the permits. We like to think it kept crowds down and thankfully there is a way around it if you’re willing to forgo sleep!

      I remember when going to Rocky was just a quick drive up experience to show your pass. Parking was easy. No reservations. Non-congested trails. Estes had plenty of parking, low crowds, and was just an enjoyable day trip. Those times are gone.

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas 2 роки тому +2

      @@roberthicks686 Yup. I'm super stoked our parks are getting the attention they deserve but miss impromptu day trips now and again.

      Best way to preserve them is limit their use. The permits aren’t that hard to get. Getting a shuttle starts at 7, and can take you to that glacier gorge trailhead in like 10 minutes. I loved not having the park absolutely packed. Best thing of Covid as I hope they keep the reservation systems. Fly fishing loche lake last summer on numerous occasions has been one of the coolest things in the world, and not that many people were around even in July. Can’t beat it.

      Getting a timed entry isn't hard, even the night before. They hold back about 750 that aren't released until 5 PM and are for the following day.

    There are circuit hikes in the park also. By utilizing the shuttle, you can start at one point and come out another and not back track. Just make sure you time it right so you don’t miss the last pickup at the end of the day.

I enjoyed commenting and sharing my experiences. However, Thanksgiving of last year I contracted an extremely severe and rare eye infection and it just turned my world upside down. I am not out of the woods yet but am finally in a good spot.

      @@AdventuresofAplusK dang I had a whole reply written out and lost it. Let me reiterate that this is pretty rare. I contracted acanthamoeba keratitis (I.e., an amoeba parasite). It is a microscopic organism that is found everywhere: water, tap water, soil, dust, HVAC.
      The majority of cases are contact lense wearers, like 85% of all cases. The most common exposure route is wearing contacts while swimming, showering, hot tubs/saunas, etc. Also rinsing contacts with tap water and poor hygiene while handling your contacts are other common pathways. The water can get trapped behind your contact and if the amoeba is present it can attack any weak spots on your cornea.
      I believe I caught mine from showering at home. Very flukey because I definitely swam with my contacts a ton of times.
      I have never even heard of this thing and was never made aware of such severe risks with contacts. Just knew swimming and contacts was not a recommended practice.

      Thanks for sharing that! That is very scary. I definitely need to be better about changing my contacts when I’m supposed to and changing the solution every night. Like you mentioned, it does sound like a pretty rare condition so I’m not going to worry too much about it, but I will strive for better hygiene and maybe take my contacts out when showering!
      Thanks for sharing that!

    My Family has been going to EP & RMNP since the 60’s. This is our favorite area of the park to hike. Along with Sky Pond there’s The Loch, Mills, Jewel, and Black Lakes. Also Dream and Emerald Lakes, which have always been our first hike upon arrival. Not too long, great for acclimation and the views from near the base of the 800 ft face of Hallet’s Peak are spectacular.
    Long’s Peak is bucket list worthy, but on your next trip to RMNP checkout Lake Of the Clouds. I don’t think it gets the attention it deserves because it’s on the west side of the park in the Never Summer Range. It’s one of my favorites. Some of the hike is along Grand Ditch, which gives you a chance to catch breath and enjoy the views.
    When you do make a return trip to CO checkout Rollins Pass. It’s the rail bed of the original train route over the divide that connected Denver with the west. Moffet tunnel, which comes out at Winter Park, does that now. I have only been up it from the east side, but it is full of history, beauty, and panoramic views. With caution it is a beautiful drive up to about tree line, where it’s blocked off. From there it’s not a bad hike to the top. It’s not a drive that’s suitable for your van, so maybe you rent a Jeep or suitable SUV.

    Another great video. Heard you guys on Ryans blog and that you will be headed to Minnesota and Michigan, can't wait for those since Michigan is my home state Most travelers go to the dunes on Lake Michigan and up to the UP to see Pictured Rocks along Lake Superior and the many water falls up there. I grew up on the sunrise side, Tawas Bay and Lake Heron. There is the Heron National Forest with some hiking trails, Lumberman's Monument is pretty cool, there is a nice lighthouse out on Tawas Point, I've been up to the top of that one. One of the biggest draws for the downstaters and tourists is a local Ben Franklin store, opened by my grandfather and now owned by my cousin Mike and his wife Laura. The store has been in the family for three generations and if you get to see what is in the store, you'll see why it's so popular. Wyoming is another great place to visit. Have fun guys.

    My favorite hike. I unknowingly lost my key fob back at lake glass in spring of 2019 and on my way back from Sky Pond a guy asked me if I lost a key, he offered to take pic because I was taking selfies and he vanished. I waited for him before you ascend up the ice pack near the vertical rock climb below lake glass for at least 30 mins. And down the trail some again for 45 min to thank him again, because I was really grateful for him, but never came down either vanished or stood up there. I went back to the park this Mid July but did not redo Sky Pond but will next year. The fire did a number glad I went prior.
    I realized spring or early June when I went the first time was better because more water in all falls and river and the walking trails had small streams all the way up from Alberta Falls made it more enjoyable.

    Made me happy watching your video I left RMNP not being able to get past the waterfall in late October. There was an ice melt and being by myself I thought it a bad idea even with spikes to continue. It was challenge for me through the snow and weather conditions just to get up to that point. I’m going back in May and hope to try again. Thank you so much for posting. I was hoping to see your dissent down the waterfall. It was completely frozen when I went up there right after the snowstorm. I know it’s difficult to film that kind of stuff when you’re in the middle of it but man oh man with a pack on it kind of freaked me out a little bit with the extra weight. Not going out by myself this next time so I’m hoping to have a little better luck but again thank you so much for the video it was great.

I was considering trying to get to the trailhead before 5:00 to avoid crowds, but after watching your video I’m wondering if that is possible. Do you have a recommendation on a start time? We started the hike around 4:45 or 5 AM I think and while we encountered a lot of people at first (it seemed like a bunch of us started at once), the crowds died down and there were only a few of us at the lake by the time we got there. We were pleasantly surprised by the lack of huge crowds at the lake. On the way back, we passed a LOT more people, especially as we got back onto the shared trail that goes to other hikes.
