The Herald’s delivery at the end is perfect. You can reasonably doubt he’d be privy to the emperor’s plans… but as glacial as his expression might seem you can almost see a hint of pity there if you want to. Like he knows full well what’s been done here.

In reality, while the Herald may not specifically be told of any plans, when you are that close to the hub of the wheel of power, you learn to discern what is afoot while officially knowing nothing thereof. You do this both for your own safety, and for the efficiency of performing your job with the tone appropriate for the instance. The Herald knew full-well what had just transpired.

Duke Leto and the Atreides (namely his advisors, Gurney for instance) knew that the Harkonenns would probably try to reclaim Arrakis from them. What they didn't expect was for the Emperor himself to betray the Atreides and send the Sardaukar to wipe them out. In the book the Sardaukar are disguised in Harkonnen armor, while in this movie they aren't disguised and are immediately recognized as the fearsome Sardaukar. Just like this scene, although that wasn't in the book, I believe adding it to the movie was just another testament to Denis Villenueve's genius as a director to make that change for the sake of a more cinematograpic scene. Truly excellent directing from Villeneuve.

Emperor of old are alot wiser than today's president who only have a few years of experience. emperor spend their entirely life fighting for power, they are not given the throne without a fight between brothers. in their princling stage, they would learn to develop their own shadow loyalist that is not in the government, you wouldn't want your emperor father to know you are plotting against your own brothers.

This scene wasn't in the book. When I first saw it, it felt so well executed and to fit so perfectly in the plot, that surely it had to be part of the source material. Only after I read the books did I understand that it was actually one of Villeneuve's own contributions. This really makes one appreciate the creative process behind movies in general, and this one in particular. I think it takes a special kind of director to understand, confidently, where and what to change the source material to make it more cinematographic.

They both know this is essentially a terribly elaborate assassination to secure the Emperor's power: the two most influential houses after the imperial house is Atradies (respected by the people) and Harkonnen (powerful and wealthy). Harkonnen controls Dune. Emperor gives Dune to Atradies knowing Harkonnen will lash out, in the process eliminating or severely weakening Atradies and demonizing Harkonnen in the eyes of the people. He's just another guy, more down to earth, to whom all these formalities seem rather obscure. Also, it tell's us quite a lot on the relationship between Atreides at least, maybe even the whole court system around it, that nobody bothered to actually plan it in advance. Simpy put: they both know this is essentially a terribly elaborate assassination to secure the Emperor's power: the two most influential houses after the imperial house is Atradies (respected by the people) and Harkonnen (powerful and wealthy). Harkonnen controls Dune. Emperor gives Dune to Atradies knowing Harkonnen will lash out, in the process eliminating or severely weakening Atradies and demonizing Harkonnen in the eyes of the people. And with his hands perfectly clean, the Emperor has murdered the threat to his throne in broad daylight.

Note the camera angle when the Duke looks down at the table, hesitating before he presses his seal. It's a traditional camera angle of a funeral: looking up from inside the grave at the mourners. Except its his own funeral, and on some level he's at least partially aware of it.
Follow that with the shot of Gurney from afar with tight focus: another classic funeral shot.
And then the Reverend Mother, looking exactly like she's wearing funeral garb. It just utterly seals the unconscious image that this is the Duke's own death warrant he's signing, and they're all present to watch him do it.

This is undoubtedly my favourite scene in Dune. Especially going in blind, it sets up the atmosphere of the film perfectly. The score, the unspoken tension and political feel of it...I always enjoy the subtle threat of violence in dialogue more than the explosive action scenes. When I saw this for the first time, I knew I was going on an epic adventure. Secondly, I love how this feels like a populated alien world with a rich history. And I love when the future is depicted this way...the costume design is inventive without being unrecognizable. It's silhouettes and material we're familiar with, but looks otherworldly in this context. Finally, Oscar Isaac's voice is so majestic. He delivers the gravity and dread needed in the scene.

I don't think it's a stretch that in the distant future a galaxy-spanning Empire could renew a feudalistic system. Plus, with the distance between worlds and long travel times I could see planets quickly developing highly distinct cultures and rituals easily. I don't think the deep future will be "modern day, but bigger and more advanced." I suspect some very new and distinct things will develop once we conquer space travel.
