i was previously a ferrari technician and just wanted to add my 2 cents on some points.
the interior issues mentioned are a HUGE problem and money pit, but are mostly related to temperature and the driver. the leather, due to it being natural and mostly untreated, is EXTREMELY prone to shrinkage from heat, ESPECIALLY the headliner which will more than likely begin to sag at some point due to the only thing holding it up being adhesive. the second largest interior issue is the soft touch material on the plastic surfaces. when the oil on your hand mixes with the animal fats used to make the soft touch, it begins to degrade and get goopy and nasty over time which practically every surface will require refinishing at some point. this was also a issue on previous models but is more prominent in the newer cars due to the larger amount of plastic surfaces.
there are very large brake ducts in the rear on the bottom of the rear under tray, which i dont believe was mentioned.
the engine fire issues were caused by adhesive used on the rear wheel wells to hold the heat insulation on, this was later fixed by riveting the insulation to the wheel wells and i believe the parts were recalled so i wouldnt consider it an issue or a reason to avoid a certain model year.
the transmission issues were the insulation for the wire chaffing that was not installed was not exclusive to those model years and fails rather quickly, i would be more concerned about the trans leaking..which it will. again not a reason imo to avoid a specific year range of the car. also, the transmissions are not particularly fragile and can handle quite a bit of abuse.
the fuel system issues mentioned were mainly related to evap pumps failing which effects the entire model range, and most notably the fuel filler neck cracking due to improper use while filling which is very common and effects all cars. its just more common in the rear engine models due to the angle of the filler neck.
the exhaust flaps will open regardless of manettino position depend and on load and throttle position
and lastly, an eventual issue that happens on all of them is the exhaust ports for the egr will clog with carbon and require the headers to be removed to clean
great video guys, awesome car. my recommendation would be to buy a porsche for less and still beat a 458 on track ;)

We want to 458 because of the emotional connection - the aural pleasures , no Porsche can provide that. I have owned a Panamera 4S which I tracked and done 6 laps of a 458 on a track day event- no comparison. 911’s don’t have a V8, so were never an option.

Wow, you actually recorded the sound of the car correctly. So many people stuff the microphone by the exhaust and it's this horrible clipping noise, even when mixed in. You got some decent microphones and managed to capture that induction and cabin noise, like what someone would actually be hearing. It reminds me of when I was tracking an F430, and so many vids miss out on that induction hiss that's heard, yet you also managed to capture the lower frequencies. This is the kind of video that the local Ferrari club owners would want to share with each other at their monthly Olive Garden meets.

This totally makes sense to me - I was basically baptized as a petrolhead when i got to ride shotgun in a 458 when i was 11, 13 years ago. It's an absolute core memory for me, the sensation of acceleration, the incredible speed i felt with the car being so low to the ground, and last but not least; the sound. I've felt weird about the sound on all the videos I've seen afterwards, as the sound just did not match what I had experienced that day. It was great being reminded of why i remembered it as being so good in this video, as it is absolutely heavenly. I got goosebumps from the footage and sound of the spirited driving here. I've dreamt about this car ever since that day, and I would consider absolutely obliterating my finances (if i ever get any kind of money) just to get to have it in my garage and drive it.

When I got my first car shortly thereafter, it was equipped with Quattro AWD, which is based on a FWD architecture, and I had to spend a lot of time relearning vehicle dynamics of front versus rear and 4WD vs AWD. Both made considerable power for a learner, but I took the time to get a feel for the dynamics of both in all weather conditions and figured out the limits of my skills and of the cars.
Years later, I’ve gone through vehicles with upwards of 400 HP and remained mostly safe on the road. I pulled my fair share of dumb stunts as a kid, but sometimes we just have to learn. And with all of the smart safety features and electronic safety systems in place, they’ll be a lot less likely to get themselves into dangerous situations. So long as they aren’t reliant on those systems, so long as they stay off their phones, and so long as they understand what’s at stake, many will be perfectly fine, even with immense power on tap!

During the drive, the explanation of the experience sums it up perfectly. I use to own a 600hp 300zx, but had the chance to drive a F355. The Ferrari was turtle slow to my 300zx..... But holy crap so much fun to drive. Mainly due to the engine note, right behind your ear.

I own a 2011 458 with 40,000 kms and it looks nothing like the one you have just reviewed. I‘ve looked after my car and even though I live in a harsh climate country the car is always garaged and the the interior still looks and smells new, the only problem is the rubber on some of the switch gear. I hate to say it but I would be very surprised if the mileage on that particular car is genuine looking at the condition of that car. I can also confirm that my car has given me very little problems and has been very reliable, my advice would be buy a well maintained and clean example and you will grin from ear to ear every time you take it for a drive. Finally a really enjoyable and well presented review.

I still remember one of the first times I saw one of these. My friends and I were on Highway 17 going from San Jose to Santa Cruz, around lunch time with mild traffic. Most people brake through the tight turns. All of a sudden the glorious crack of downshifting from a 458 becomes audible to everyone, and we look in the mirrors to see it weaving through traffic smoothly and accelerating towards us. We had just completed one of the tight turns and had a quarter mile straight in front of us, so the 458 was WOT through the end of the turn while passing us; it is one of our favorite memories. I look forward to the day I get to drive a 458.

What a perfect summation for how I feel. Ferrari was my #2 favorite car company (behind Mazda, yes I'm serious lol) up until the time when they stopped making manual cars. I still like some of the post-manual cars (599, California, 458, and LaFerrari cuz GORGEOUS)...but they haven't been 'FERRARI!' for me in quite some time. I mean absolutely no disrespect as I still finding them amazing, but I don't follow what they're making much these days and haven't driven a new one in quite a while and haven't tried to find a way to do so.
They just don't have the same character as they did back then. They're hilariously faster, and incredibly more capable than the older cars, but they just don't have 'it' anymore for ME.
I understand that kids/young people these days will grow up with this as their poster on the wall, but man I wish they could have seen the cars from the early to mid '00's and the older stuff before they decided to refine away all the edges.
Ferrari was king for another reason besides speed. 👌
Give me a manual F355 or F360 any day over any modern Ferrari and I'd gladly take the reliability and service issues along with the much much much slower speeds lol. I'd be grinning all the way 😎👌

It begs the question why Ferrari doesn't make a N/A engines anymore. This car with a manual transmission would be amazing. Driving enjoyment isn't about 0-60, or Nurburgring lap times. It's about emotion and satisfaction, which the 458 delivers in spades. I own this car since 2011, to be honest: BMW and Mercedes have a better navigation and other electronic features. But when it comes to driving, revving, feeling like a formula 1 race , this car is and will remain unbeatable!
And, by the way, I am also satisfied with the quality of the car and cannot confirm the alleged defects shown in your movie.
Summary: this car is an all-time great!
