Slide the metal tab towards the cup until it compresses the two arm together against the hinge on the cup to lock it in place. At least that’s how it works on other pots and pans that I have, I don’t have that particular one.
I thought about these for a while, but ended up going for the Pathfinder Titanium Water bottle and cup mostly because I like the way it fits the backpack. These kits all look good though and I would lean towards the Pathfinder Canteen Set because of the extra cup. Thanks Dr. Ernie for another informative video.
I have some Nalgene Oasis bottles, and I already had a stainless steel USGI canteen cup with the butterfly handles. I ended up buying just the Heavy Cover cup and lid for $55 to add to the mix because I wanted a titanium cup and lid that would work with the rest of the setup. The Nalgene Oasis bottles are a bit lighter than the titanium canteen, and I like being able to see inside the bottles because they're clear. The downside is that you miss out on a bottle that can be put over a fire, but if I'm carrying more than one bottle, I can just carry two cups anyway. Works out to have a cup for a cooking/eating, a cup for a warm beverage, and two liters of water.
The slider on that mess kit slides down to prevent accidental releasing of the handle from the pot when clenching the handle, but apparently not so much to keep the pot from flipping up, or rotating back from the handle. As for the Pathfiner set not having a bail handle, the Boundless Voyage (which I have) does have two clips on each pot and includes a bail wire so you can hang either pot.
The handle lock clip is designed to slide towards the pot to prevent squeezing too hard and releasing the mechanism. The large pot is made to sit inside the small pot, yes I know but it does fit. The lid then sits quite snugly on the large pot.
Earnie, OK, I own the Keith and the Pathfinder sets. My personal favorite is my Keith 40.6 ounce round bottle with 2 Toaks 750ml pots (no bails) and one pot lid in a 500 denier nylon bag. One pot with lid nest on the bottle bottom with the second pot over the top of the bottle inside the nylon bag. When empty I store a UCO titanium spork, Soto Amicus burner, Sawyer Mini filter with one liter bag rolled separately inside the bottle.
I purchased the Pathfinder kit when it first came out. Titanium is handy for long distance hikers concerned about pack weight, (and for old folks like me)! With a bad back, and old knees, I try to keep my pack as light as possible. One of the things I really like about the Pathfinder kit is the fact the lid has drain holes, so I can cook pasta, etc., and easily drain off the excess water. Thanks for sharing. :-)
I loved all Three, I think I also liked the Pathfinders. For the same reason having a second coup. Thank you Brother Ernie for Sharing your Time. Sincerely your freind from Mo Rick and God Bless you 🙏 and your family and God Bless America 🇺🇸 🙏 and God Bless all of the Great Veterans and First Responders.
Hi I hate Titanium. I bought a Keith Military style canteen set. The cup is thin. the handles are awkward. It keeps the cup slanted. To top it off, the bottom warped. I threw away the cup. In my misfortune, I found out that the Stainless Steel cup of the Pathfinder (also the Jolmo Lander 800ml SS cup) and the Keith Ti canteen bottle fits like a charm together. I found for me the perfect combo. Just sharing. Thanks
Thanks for video and just to add to comment population - I have the Keith version as shown with the separate purchase of a Centerline carrier. The Pathfinder rendition has had my attention since it came out as I think it's probably more versatile. I have several Pathfinder stainless models (canteen & bottle) to include the Heavy Cover paired stainless lids (out of production nowadays I think). Have to admit, Pathfinder Stainless Canteen Cook set, remains my go to despite weight when full. I have a work around for that ...... ... make my granddaughter carry. LOL
For those who want a comparison with the Boundless Voyage Canteen kit, I've had it for quite a while and that's been my go-to ever since. It's pretty much what the Pathfinder kit is, with the addition of hook and chain system (that's really light weight mind you) that you can attatch to hang the kit over a fire. Other then that, and it's tiny attachment points, I think it's the exact same thing. Pretty solid and worth the purchase. :)
I came here to say the same thing. Also, I managed to fit the lid in the bottom of the main compartment, leaving just enough room for Vargo Hex stove in the side pocket.

I love - and own since many years - the Keith kit. The Keith canteen cup is very practical in handling due to the extra wire in the one handle, and very easy to clean after use. I'm not interested in the other samples you showed since both, the edged shaped Pathfinder kit as well as the unneccessarily complicatedly shaped Heavy Cover kit, are not so easy to clean in case you use these things for cooking, and during cooking the shape of these other kits might turn out to be unpractical for stirring etc.. If you use the canteen cups only for boiling water and maybe have your tea out of it, it might not make a big difference, but for eerything else I want to have it as Keith as possible ;-)
Im getting the Heavy Cover Tomorrow! Ive been wanting a Titanium Canteen for a long time. Theres a store not far from my home that sells them. It should work well and it should last a lifetime. Its $225 Canadian but worth every penny. Cost is not a down side for me if it works.
Looks like the detachable handle on the 3rd canteen set is to hang it over a fire for cookin/boiling. Detach and slide it in vertically from the top, should lock into the lower cut-out to hang by the handle from a tripod or just such. Just a thought.
I received the Pathfinder Titanium Kit as a Christmas present. It was on sale for around $116. I ordered the Centerline GCC Carry System and am waiting on it to arrive. Thanks for your review and as always an excellent job!
The Heavy Cover Military mess kit offers a lot more as far as having the ability of cooking two different items at one time. It's a time proven military kit that a lot of nations use. Finally they have one in Titanium. The slider on the handle is to keep you from squeezing the handle and it coming loose as you use it. Grant you , no canteen with it but that's why they make Smart Water Bottles. One additional benefit is that you can put all sorts of items inside it. I'm thinking , including the lid. ( the lid should fit inside the bail with the cup on top )
I bought the heavy cover mess kit and the canteen kit. The heavy cover cup and canteen do FIT INSIDE the mess kit. Granted the lid doesn’t sit balanced on top. I use and old British BBC carrying case that can with the osprey kit. It’s slightly larger than the American canteen kit and fits the set-up perfectly. I can nest the canteen and cup inside with a camp towel to quite rattling noises.
The last one reminds me of my Swiss mess kit . Need to weigh mine . The slide may be to cantilever a stick handle onto it some way . Have a great evening
The third canteen with the locking handle is upside down on the reverse and the small cup should go on the bottom when stored and the lid on top of the main pot. You can see the locking handle is in L shape to fit the flat bottom of the small cup when unfolded.
Oo man great video! Heavy Cover Titanium Military Mess Kit should have added the second pan like in the original German Army BW Kantine (Aluminium). It is perfect besides not beeing Titanium. I get why you mostly use the Heavy Cover
Next question, one of these cooksets vs a titanium cup/pot with maybe a smaller titanium cup (or different material) and maybe a metal water bottle as a diy set. Perhaps this could be a mix of materials to show where each has its benefits. 16oz deli container can handle boiling hot soup so maybe a nice lightweight cup alternative.
Don't trust thin plastic to handle boiling water in temperatures well below freezing. I carry stainless steel bottles in the winter. I had an old poly Nalgene break once. Of course, that was the old opaque white bottle. I can melt and boil water from snow next to an open fire, saving fuel in northern winter weather with the stainless bottles.
Great video. This is what I found works great for me. Heavy Cover mess kit for boiling water, cooking soups and stews, then I have the heavy cover canteen kit for drinking coffee, tea, or any other. Canteen just for water too. Then to finish my cooking gear I have a usgi mess kit which I use as my fry pan and lid as plate for eating. This set up for me works really good covering all bases and really light weight.
For those who timed it right, the Pathfinder Ti set was marked down to $125. I got mine last year and do like it. Haven't been impressed by the carry case (snap broke), but it has otherwise been a great set. I find I leave the included cup at home. It's a weird form factor for me for hot drinks. Others may like it. I just find I don't. I prefer my Toaks 450ml cup with DIY reflectix cozy. Just my preference. Others may find otherwise.
I have the Heavy Cover canteen kit and mess kit and love them both... But, if your on a tight budget and need a complete kit... then maybe this is a better idea. I recently acquired a BCB crusader mk2 set. Thats a bomb proof plastic canteen, a plastic cup, an aluminum hard anodized pot and an aluminum pot stand that will accept a trangia. Then I saw a UA-cam video where the videographer substituted the plastic cup with a BCB crusader mk1 stainless pot. This is a really good setup and even after adding the stainless cup you are still under $80! I guess one of these days I need to start making my own videos... Thanks Ernie... always love your videos especially all the coffee videos, ever tried nutmeg in your coffee?
Flip the handle over. It stabilizes the small pot when it is setting on a flat surface. Can the small bowl fit on the bottom of the large pot? That seems like a more compact way to store the set..with the lid on top.
Yeah, slide toward the pot and the tab should stop the handle springing in and releasing. I'm sure you get that now, however many comments it is later. So... Do you think the weight savings are worth the cost? Trail bling is nice, but is that all they're worth over the stainless steel options? I steer clear of aluminium where I can, I'm not worried about the leaching I just find it's too easy to damage. Steel might be less prone to burning and sticking when cooking although I tend not to cook much in my titanium pots that would stick anyway. That really just leaves price and weight to separate them, and I've not been convinced that my wanting them is enough to justify the monies required. Good of you to make that sacrifice for us to know, so what do you think on whether it's really worth the coin?
Titanium pots work great if you want to boil water, but be ready to stir often and all the way to the bottom if you want to cook. If you can live with that (like me) then titanium works well. Aluminum is even lighter than titanium, just not quite so strong, but aluminum pots work very well for cooking since aluminum conduct heat very well.
I have troubles burning aluminium pans as well. And think it’s related to being so thin it doesn’t spread the heat very well. You get a small area of a pan or pot hot quite fast, but not so much the rest of it. So the only cure, really, is a thicker and heavier material. So I carry a heavy pan if I can, but often go for the thin titanium one. And use a wide burner and a windscreen all around to spread the heat. It works too, you just have to be careful.
Thanks for the sacrifice. I just subscribed. I'm into Titanium outdoor luxury, too. Will have a further look into that Mess kit. I just bought a titanium lunchbox as well, which is also a crazy thing to buy.
I was just about to write this comment when the "many of you will say..." part came up :D And to save some money i went with the no bottle boundless set - just the cups and lid version and im still using a plastic bottle from a stainless steel set. And i love it!
Ernie I agree with Sean in that you certainly should do this with the Boundless Voyage Canteen kit for comparison sake. Not everyone has the deep pockets need to afford such equipment!
I have owned the Heavy Cover/Keith Titanium Canteen Set for years… one of the main draws for me is that it is completely compatible with existing USGI canteens, canteen cups, canteen stoves, pouches as well as Nalgene canteens. I’m disappointed that Pathfinder/Boundless seems to have deviated from this standard design. Can you confirm if they are compatible with existing canteens/cups/pouches?
Has anyone encountered cleaning issues on the center horizontal seams on these canteen bottles? It seems like these seams can get dirty overtime if not properly cleaned and dried.
Your 'sacrifice' is appreciated. Boundless Voyage has a cook kit that is interesting but needs a canteen, which is best filled with a Nalgene canteen. It does not work with the Boundless Voyage canteen. The land of Ti campware is an odd one.
Boundless voyage makes excellent gear btw love there cook grill and titanium tongs(= I moved away from the canteen years ago doesn't clean well the Keith water bottle is better wide mouth for easy cleaning and a real cup to nestle!!😁✌️💚
I love boundless voyage, a few more things, not many more, and I'll be satisfied for what I want in a cook system. 2 coffee cups Gasification stove Rectangle grill Dragon Horse hinged stove Canteen mess kit - soon to be completed (circumstances being what they were I had to order the cups seperately, they arrive soon) the canteen has been used twice so far. I like to keep it brand specific and this company has been the most affordable with high quality. Roughly $420 Canadian so far on making a Ti cook kit I'll spend maybe $200 more at most but I'll know I'll have it all for years to come
I totally missed the fact that the Heavy Cover did not have a canteen. I was on the verge of ordering one until this video. I would have been a VERY unhappy camper when it showed up!
It wouldn’t be the first piece of kit I would buy but if you’re out a lot I find it to be worth it. I have the Keith set, and use the cup more for heating water for tea, chocolate and bagged foods than I use it to drink from. And only drink coffee in the morning, so if I’m on an overnighter I bring a wooden bowl as well, as those deep cups aren’t the easiest to eat from. The wood is a much better insulator as well, bad for cooking but good for your lips and good for keeping your food hot. And then I use the bowl for coffee as well. Problem solved.
Does the heavy cover titanium canteen optional plastic lid fit on the pathfinder titanium canteen? I dont want to hear that terrible ti noise everytime I take a drink.
Greetings from Norway Ernie&comment field. This is one of those very big difference between Norway and USA, UK and other Coventries were canteen is a popular piece of gear. I have never, in +30 years, seen someone with a canteen over here. Any thoughts why? In Norway the interest for using military related gear has really never been a popular thing. Can it be that simple?
Question, I know alot of people pack their canister stove inside their pots. Does everybody clean out their pots and dry them , then repack their stove back inside? new to hiking not sure how everyone cleans their cookware after each meal and heading back on the trail. Thanks
Marsha, Marsha , Marsha, Titanium ,Titanium, Titanium... Sorry just reminds me of that. Titanium is tough metal to work with, the metal shop in the basement were I used to work, they used to work on that stuff for weeks, it has a distinct stinky stench, when cutting, guess that is why no level marking? Very hard metal? I'm not into Titanium, too $$$, for me, but I prefer that metal canteen, any metal over plastic. In a lost of everything else, you have a spark, can find water, have the metal canteen you can at least boil water. Deal breaker for me in some of those modern military mess kits are those plaster water containers. I do like the Heavy Cover Military Style Mess Kit. Seems well thought out.
some areas have clay not too far down to make same sound creating pots, Oinc. Smells as earth working with. Just pray for those making lead sinkers in an eight by eight shack.
E... Please answer me this one question, can Titanium be made to be NON STICK like stainless steel can be made to fry an egg? I know stainless steel can, but I don't own any titanium samples to test this challenge or question. within reason of course because stainless steel in not carbon steel by any means...lol I'm serious even cast iron has sticking issues if not done correctly and Teflon is a joke when well used on a campfire.
Yes it can, well several YT videos say it can! If I remember I think it has to be done each time you use it, my advise is juts Google it and I’m sure you will get your answer 👍
Liked the review. Titanium has its place in the cook-kit world. That said... being selective on gear choices with respect to utilization optimization is the blueprint needed for closer examination. Here in Alaska for example. Both of these 2" mouthed canteens are total losers for several reasons. A wide mouth would make them much more suitable. Geometry regarding both of the canteen kits is also an issue... these do not provide as good efficiency or as much versatility, simplicity, and handiness vs. round designs. Cleaning is also made more difficult. While I get the nostalgia of these 'militaria-based' concepts... they are just not as lets say 'well rounded', efficient, adaptable, and simple as round or cylindrical shapes. If/when I go for Ti (anything)... I will be very selective on what it is, why (ie. attributes other than just lightweight), and how I will want to use it. Out of all the kits here --- My preference would be the larger kit without canteen; and as you pointed out be creative and store stuff inside it. I agree tho' --- seems like the extra lid was an afterthought addition and not quite thought out.
Very expensive perzonally could not justify all that on one item. Try stainless steel, does same job not much beavier. I use usa type canteen and cup made in sweden. Tbe otber bcb crhsader both are good and gives yoh extra water capacity if you take both. Water being tbe heaviest item 1 kg per litre.
I love the light weight of titanium, but I find that it has a pretty serious drawback. For example, I came across a titanium pot with some kind of burn in the bottom, which I could not get rid of. I was afraid I was going to destroy it by trying to get the blemish out. Talking to an REI rep, he said that titanium has a coating. I think this might be that food burns easily in titanium and the deterioration of the coating may have caused this. Because of this, I had rather use stainless steel cookware despite the heavier weight. What are your thoughts about this? Thanks.
5" collapsible SS steamer basket(ten or less cost) will fit in those/open just enough for use. Just keep an eye on the water. 14cm, 3/4" or more deep water boils on out fairly fast. blah blah....a 3" X 1" SS cookie cutter will nest inside the basket. Below steamer it gives another half inch for water if anal of steaming. Plus one can slam flattened dough for biscuits. ~ Zebra Billy pots are near a work of art. Zebra should spot weld a ring for pouring, but, I'll be damned if I'll drill holes in the included bowl to steam. (-:
The problem with the titanium set is its hard to clean out when you get mineral buildup. Just get a large mouth single walled water bottle and nesting cup for a fraction of the price.
Slide the metal tab towards the cup until it compresses the two arm together against the hinge on the cup to lock it in place. At least that’s how it works on other pots and pans that I have, I don’t have that particular one.
Flip the handle over

Thanks Ernie... always love your videos especially all the coffee videos, ever tried nutmeg in your coffee?
Another great review to make buying one alot easier, thanks. Have the Keith titanium and works great.
I have had a small manufacturer make a prototype canteen cover for Dave canterbury's canteen set, would you be interested in reviewing it?
Thanks for the sacrifice. I just subscribed. I'm into Titanium outdoor luxury, too. Will have a further look into that Mess kit. I just bought a titanium lunchbox as well, which is also a crazy thing to buy.
would love to see a comparison/review of the boundless voyage to these....
I was just about to write this comment when the "many of you will say..." part came up :D
And to save some money i went with the no bottle boundless set - just the cups and lid version and im still using a plastic bottle from a stainless steel set. And i love it!
Thanks again Ernie, enlightening video!
No regrets on choosing the Keith/Heavy Cover Canteen.
I prefer the pathfinder ti round bottle and cup. Starting going lightweight after a leg break
Does the dimensions of the Kieth canteen match the dimensions of official military canteens? (Excluding the mouth)
i have keith canteen same as yours and i love it
Has anyone encountered cleaning issues on the center horizontal seams on these canteen bottles? It seems like these seams can get dirty overtime if not properly cleaned and dried.
Can you fit a canteen inside the mess kit??
What about the Keith Ti 3036 bottle and their pot Ti 3028 that would nest into? I thought Pathfinder had a Ti bottle kit as well.
can the handle of pan hold them together, pan and pot?
Does the heavy cover cook pot set fit in any of the army alcohol stove wind shields?
Your 'sacrifice' is appreciated. Boundless Voyage has a cook kit that is interesting but needs a canteen, which is best filled with a Nalgene canteen. It does not work with the Boundless Voyage canteen. The land of Ti campware is an odd one.
The none locking handle lock it probably that square on the back of the handle
I realize it’s not the GI style of this video, but have you had any experience with the Toaks Titanium line of products?
Dr. Ernie, love your reviews...question will the large HC kit fit in Swedish M44 wind screen? I'm thinking not which is a shame.
Boundless voyage makes excellent gear btw love there cook grill and titanium tongs(= I moved away from the canteen years ago doesn't clean well the Keith water bottle is better wide mouth for easy cleaning and a real cup to nestle!!😁✌️💚
I just commented at the top about that!!
@@sparrowflying864 not to many people ACTUALLY use their gear!!😁✊🔥
I love boundless voyage, a few more things, not many more, and I'll be satisfied for what I want in a cook system.
2 coffee cups
Gasification stove
Rectangle grill
Dragon Horse hinged stove
Canteen mess kit - soon to be completed (circumstances being what they were I had to order the cups seperately, they arrive soon) the canteen has been used twice so far. I like to keep it brand specific and this company has been the most affordable with high quality. Roughly $420 Canadian so far on making a Ti cook kit I'll spend maybe $200 more at most but I'll know I'll have it all for years to come
Try reversing the handle and see if it locks
Hi. Do you still use the Pathfinder Kit?
I think the last one the handle is upside down and that square piece in it will snap into were it hooks up to the cup.
Will the Keith Ti3060 bottle fit into that heavy cover canteen?
Have you tried just putting the cover inside the mess kit?
I totally missed the fact that the Heavy Cover did not have a canteen. I was on the verge of ordering one until this video. I would have been a VERY unhappy camper when it showed up!
Thanks
It wouldn’t be the first piece of kit I would buy but if you’re out a lot I find it to be worth it. I have the Keith set, and use the cup more for heating water for tea, chocolate and bagged foods than I use it to drink from. And only drink coffee in the morning, so if I’m on an overnighter I bring a wooden bowl as well, as those deep cups aren’t the easiest to eat from. The wood is a much better insulator as well, bad for cooking but good for your lips and good for keeping your food hot. And then I use the bowl for coffee as well. Problem solved.
What kind (or brand) bowl do you use? I’ve been looking at kuksa’s but their size is mainly too small. I’d love any tips!
Heavy Cover handle: If you remove it and then insert the short bent up part up into the bracket on the back of the cup, will that lock it into place?
I was thinking the same thing.
Question, I know alot of people pack their canister stove inside their pots. Does everybody clean out their pots and dry them , then repack their stove back inside? new to hiking not sure how everyone cleans their cookware after each meal and heading back on the trail. Thanks
Personally, yes. Scrub with sand or moss, rinse and dry a few seconds over a flame. Everything clean and dry.
That 3rd one...never seen it before...damn it you probably just cost me $150! LOL
there is pro and cons to them all
titanium gets hot fast and gets cold quick
i have the pathfinder for the same reason you like and use them'
Marsha, Marsha , Marsha, Titanium ,Titanium, Titanium...
Great information.
Why don’t you put the lid for the heavy cover set inside it? 🙄
2nd Loving the reviews. Thanks 😊
Both very awesome
Good review , thanks for sharing , God bless !
I still can't pull the trigger on either of first two....
Nice. Thanks. Appreciate cha.
why the steep prices for some titanium cookware? 160 nuts...
Ur missing it , it's the cost and it's the cost I myself bought the the Pathfinder titanium kit and it's worth it's wight n gold
Your paying extra for the Pathfinders branding stamp. Some people want that, some people don't.
with chinese products buy directly from aliexpress instead from amazon where people resell aliexpress stuff
Thanks.
Why would one choose one of these canteen-style cook kits over a round pot-based kit?
Pathfinder is 99.99 now , better carry case
And you squished that annoying ant... Lol
You lost me at $160 for a canteen. I don’t care what it’s made from. If it can deflect bullets then I’ll consider it.
First 🙏🏽😂🥩🥩
Titanium is only handy with watery foods. Almost unable to cook a decent meal.
9:35 awarded you a down vote. So not necessary, dude.
I will stick with my 14cm Stainless steel Zebra Billy Pot.
Zebra should spot weld a ring for pouring, but,
I'll be damned if I'll drill holes in the included bowl to steam. (-:
Tokes 750 ml is the best in the titanium game
The problem with the titanium set is its hard to clean out when you get mineral buildup. Just get a large mouth single walled water bottle and nesting cup for a fraction of the price.
👍🏼👍🏼🎯💯💯💯⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
go to 9 minutes 34 seconds to witness a murder ;)
this is a joke by the way.
