if only because he knows that only one of the many species who fought in the time wars could have built a VOID ship with sliver of even remotely having a chance to succeed
I love the switch in the music when the cyberman says the sphere is not ours. To that point it was pure cyberman music, at that point the vocals are added to give it a touch of Daleks and then when the Daleks are recognised it changes again. To full blown Daleks music. Absolute genius from Murray gold.
This is one of those rare tv moments where everything comes together perfectly for a scene. Sound design, music, acting cinematography, directing. This is right up there with Star Trek TNG's Best of Both Wars when Picard hails Star Fleet when the cube arrives.
I love the sheer horror on Rose's face when she sees just who and what is inside the Sphere. "Oh, my god!" It really sells how screwed they think they are, and of the threat the daleks represent.
If I could compare this scene to another I would have to pick Startrek TNG's Best of Both Worlds when Locutus first appears and the entire bridge crew looks like they shit their pants.
Best twist ever I think, the world is taken over quickly by cybermen then those 4 appear and you think you couldn't be anymore screwed. Excellent writing and no one saw it coming
this is truly a jaw-dropping scene. long-time viewers of the series over the decades were mind blown upon realization that the cybermen and daleks would now inevitably appear in an episode together for the very first time in the series' history. rose's verbal reaction upon the void's contents underscores just how much more dire the situation has become. the camera close up of the dalek's eye stalk in the final moments is a most lovely homage to camera angles used in classic episodes of years past. the dalek theme song is truly epic and iconic here. truly, one of the most memorable cliffhangers for the ages.
Lol, I never noticed this before, but one second the Doctor is like 'the Cybermen could never build a void ship', and then the next, after the Cyberman confirms what he *just said*, he's like 'what?' as if he expected the Cybermen to have built it.
It logically followed that, despite not knowing how, the Cybermen managed it somehow considering the void ship led the Cyberman charge onto the planet. When the Cyberman confirms they had absolutely nothing to do with it and just followed it independently, it confirms that it's not just a matter of them finding one lying around or having the strength to take one from someone; it means the five million Cybermen are essentially 'pilot fish' for the much more significant threat of a species that could create a void ship.
They could have found it, or someone gifted it to them. The fact that it just appeared by itself means that it is completly independent and a play by someone who has timelord level technology.
This 2 parter was probably the best way to end the series. Bringing 2 iconic enemies face to face, but the reveal for the Daleks was just incredible. I was 12 when this episode came out, and the Daleks had always been my favourite enemy so you could imagine the excitement I had when I realised there was about to be a 3 way war between Humans, Cybermen and the Daleks.
I remember the first time seeing that when I was 10 years old, I legit did not expect that The Daleks were gonna be in Series 2! The moment The 4 Daleks appeared, I was thinking all sorts: "Oh my God it's The Dalek Supreme!" (By that time I seen The Dalek Invasion of Earth, my first classic story I watched when I started watching the classic DVDs during Series 2's run) "Ooh, the next episode is gonna be all out war!" and "The 10th Doctor is gonna confront the Daleks, I hope it's gonna be like 9's confrontation!" I think this is the best cliffhanger in the show's entire history! It still gives me chills every time I see it because it takes me back to that moment in 2006!
This scene is just EPIC. And, ironically, no one could have foreseen it coming even if they saw Nick Briggs walking into the BBC studios or saw his name in the script because of course he voices the Cybermen too!
I mean, there's always that 'Oh shit' moment when the big villain (that's you known was coming for weeks) seems to be winning, just before the cliffhanger, but this? This was a proper blindsided 'Oh FUCK' one...
I remember first watching this episode. And trying to burrow through the back of the sofa in absolute terror as I realised what was coming out of that sphere and what it meant for everyone and everything.
I'd agree, but maybe with Bad Wolf or The Sound of Drums also, not because of surprise, but just because of the pure "HOW THE HELL IS ANYBODY GOING TO SURVIVE" realisation...
You know, this would be actually perfect if you couldn't see the daleks coming out at 0:48 and 0:50, so the eyestalk view is how you know that it's them.
The scene should have showed the light as it opened, cut to Mickey saying "That's not Cybermen" and then cut right to the blue screen the daleks have and proceeded from there.
I remember when this first aired. I was so down that day, because my favourite Saturday morning television show had had its final episode and England had been dumped out of the World Cup just before this aired, so my God was this one huge boost.
@Supreme Black Dalek Patterson: "It appears that there are some teething issues with the... with the drones, so I appeal to everybody to keep calm. The drones are completely under our control, so we're working to shut them down..." Defense Drone Dalek 1: [interrupts] "TERRITORIAL LEADER IDENTIFIED! DALEKS WILL NOT BE SHUT DOWN! DALEKS ARE SUPREME!" Patterson: "This must be some sort of a joke?" Defense Drone Dalek 1: "DALEKS DO NOT JOKE!" Patterson: [refusing] "And I do not surrender." Defense Drone Dalek 1: "EXTERMINATE!!!" [kills the Prime Minister, who screams in agony] "THIS TERRITORY IS THE PROPERTY OF THE DALEKS! DALEKS ARE IN CONTROL! ALL HUMANITY WILL BE EXTERMINATED!!!" (from the 2021 BBC "Doctor Who" TV Movie Special "Revolution of The Daleks")
Personally, mine are Army of Ghosts, Utopia and the Name of the Doctor. Bad Wolf would be there as well if the next time trailer for it on the previous episode hadn't ruined it.
I'm not the world's biggest fan of family guy and I hated the Cleveland show but I legitimately did laugh when the two shows did a crossover and Peter makes a sarcastic comment about the network ruining the surprise in a promo. Some network people value too much getting more eyes on one particular episode via an early reveal, than the idea of a surprise generating more long term buzz that might make you come back for more. As a viewer of television I'm more likely to keep coming back to a show where anything can happen at any time, rather than to a show I know I can miss until they tell me something good will happen in advance.
That simple “Oh my God” shows perfectly the fact that Rose fears the Daleks above all others. Up until this point, it’s just another day with The Doctor, but then she realises just how serious her predicament is.
In my headcannon, the cybermen know the cult of skaro exists within the ship and actually travel back in time to that point in time with the goal of preventing the daleks from taking earth, instead of just also invading. I think it's more interesting and I also fucking hate the multiverse trope.
I love how fucking shook he is when the cyberman says "the sphere is not ours"
Yeah. It's not often you catch The Doctor off guard.
Cyberman: “The sphere is not ours”
The Doctor: ._.
*Shaken, dear, shaken.

wtf. deja vu. I just came from that comment
This era of doctor who had so many of these perfect moments. Pure Genius. The show never was, and never will be better than series 1-4
I love the sheer horror on Rose's face when she sees just who and what is inside the Sphere.
"Oh, my god!"
It really sells how screwed they think they are, and of the threat the daleks represent.
Yeah, back then, when the Daleks were still scary.
If I could compare this scene to another I would have to pick Startrek TNG's Best of Both Worlds when Locutus first appears and the entire bridge crew looks like they shit their pants.
one of New Who's best dalek scenes

This has to be the best cliffhanger to any Doctor Who episode!
If nothing else, for the sheer, 'Oh Fuck' factor...

That was beautifully written. Wow. You have a way with words.
@@user-gx7vj3oq7j thank you, most graciously. i will never forget my reaction to this epic cliffhanger when i first viewed it.
This era Dr Who is unrivalled, was hooked as a 8yr old and still hooked now at 26.

Naahh dawg, it ain't ours. We just marched through as it pinched a space anus through to your world.
Thats like knowing something but hoping you're wrong
They could have found it, or someone gifted it to them. The fact that it just appeared by itself means that it is completly independent and a play by someone who has timelord level technology.
This was an amazing cliffhanger because it came so out of left field and...DALEKS!!
This 2 parter was probably the best way to end the series. Bringing 2 iconic enemies face to face, but the reveal for the Daleks was just incredible. I was 12 when this episode came out, and the Daleks had always been my favourite enemy so you could imagine the excitement I had when I realised there was about to be a 3 way war between Humans, Cybermen and the Daleks.

scary too
I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it, The Cult of Skaro were one of the best villains in Doctor Who.
The doctor's face when the cybermen say it's not their's!
One of the best cliffhangers of the entire show.
