  • The Razor Edge released last year claiming to be the ultimate Android gaming handheld - with a decent controller portion and a high-refresh-rate OLED panel. With a list price of $400 for the Wifi version ($600 for the cellular model) of the tablet and the controversy with the amount of RAM being listed as 8GB when you only got 6GB, it's not surprising that the Edge didn't take off quite as well as Razer might have hoped. But now everyone knows how much RAM you get with the Wifi version and (more importantly) you can now pick the Edge up new for prices ranging between $200 and $250. At that price point, is it worth a buy?
Let's take a look at the Edge in mid-2024. What's in the box, how does it compare size-wise to other devices, and ... most importantly ... how well does it play PS2 games?

Wow, just wow, UA-cam really has blessed me with a UA-camr I actually enjoy
I never actually knew razer made this ever, and I’m someone that always stayed up to date with new products made by these companies, it makes me mad that your putting all this effort for little views.
I will say, there could be some things to improve the video, like adding some background music, simple stuff like that, but other than that, keep going man
Hope you blow up soon, new sub ❤

I think the Edge probably never took off when released because people thought - rightly - that the original asking price of $400 was way too high for what you get. But when you can pick these up for $250 or less (Amazon have put these on sale several times for $250, Newegg had them at $230), then you've got a far more compelling case for a purchase. I've only had the Edge for a couple of days, but I'm liking the performance so far ... and the OLED screen - despite the 20:9 aspect ratio and rounded corners - is absolutely beautiful.
I'll give it a more proper review when I've had a chance to play with it for a while.
Thanks for watching! I put these videos up mainly because I enjoy testing out these devices and I have been a retrogamer and collector for about three decades now!

    Indeed...
    Another mobile gaming option...
Razer Edge + GameSir X-4 Aileron Bluetooth/Wireless Controller...
Awesome Device but the whole pricing and ram ordeals got people turned away...
12 or 16gb ram + a better fan system needed...
    🧐🤓

Lol watched the WULFF DEN video a little while ago where he mentioned the Razer Edge dropped in price, and just saw you made a video on it. For $200-250 (compared to it's original $400 price point) it's A LOT more appealing. Especially with the specs, you're pretty much getting full-speed PS2 (most of the time). It's kind of in that spectrum between the RP4P and Odin 2. The only gripe I have with it though is that obnoxious curved bezel. Maybe combined with a CRT shader, you might be able to mimic that CRT look but other than that serves absolutely no purpose.
By the way, I didn't realize you had a channel 'till recently, let alone of this superb quality. Your RG Cube video has been really helpful for me, especially with the comparisons with the RG405M. Looking forward to seeing more stuff from you.

The curved bezel is weird, yes ... mainly because the device *itself* isn't rounded off on the corners. I really have no idea why they designed it that way. Of course, if you're going to play 16:9 and not stretch it, the black bars on the sides make the curves invisible for widescreen content. If you can look past the curves and the 20:9 aspect ratio, the screen is really good for an emulation device. 144Hz (can set refresh rate lower to get more battery life), apparent HDR support, great colors and contrast that my camera just isn't up to capturing properly, and reasonably bright.
I haven't had the Edge long enough to do a proper "review", but so far I've been satisfied with the performance for PS2. It's performed more like an Odin 2 than like an RG Cube/RG556. I think you're exactly right on where the Edge is on the power spectrum - better than RP4P, far better than the T820 handhelds, but not quite up to the level of Odin 2. I think where the Odin 2 is a clear winner is going to be Switch and Winlator ... the 6GB of RAM in the Edge is going to be limiting.
      Glad you enjoyed the videos!
(The Cube "first impressions" video did run a little longer than I had originally planned for, but I just got into it and ended up testing out four games instead of two!)

@@chemicalburrito782 Yeah forgot to mention that due to the screen being rectangular, THEN adding the curved layer on top of that messes with the device’s uniformity, and yeah you can probably just play in 4:3 (don’t even like playing in 16:9 for those systems to begin with). Even though a lot people don’t see the point of 144hz, in terms of the device most of the time not being able to drive that refresh rate (similar to what people said about the Legion Go) which I understand what they’re saying. But an extremely overlooked aspect of having that high refresh rate is the responsiveness/snappy nature of the device. It just makes the experience of traversing through apps and pages a lot more fluid. Like you mentioned as well, you can always adjust the refresh rate to preserve battery life. Odin 2 definitely reigns supreme in regard to specs of performance. Also on the topic of Winlator, even though the Odin 2 is way better for Winlator, I’m kind of curious how older CD-ROM (especially from the Late 90s) games will run on the Cube/Edge, since they’re mostly less demanding than the more modern titles I’ve seen people test. And hey I’ll take the longer videos. The more info the better.

I'm going to put up a more proper "review" video once I've had the device a little longer, but so far I'm glad I went ahead and bought one. It's probably going to end up as the device that's in my bag every day.

That's that old Star Wars MMO for Windows, right? You could probably *stream* it to this handheld from a Windows machine, but I've not heard of anyone running it native on Android via Winlator.

It has power sure, but the aspect ratio is the worst! I don't enjoy playing PS2 on it.

    • @chemicalburrito782
      @chemicalburrito782  11 днів тому +1

@@syunukiya That's certainly fair. For me, the tradeoff of much higher screen quality for the downside of having black bars due to the 20:9 aspect ratio is one that I'm more willing to make.
In the end, what tradeoffs to make comes down to personal preference. Was looking at Reddit earlier and saw someone posting about how good it felt to play PSP on the RG Cube!

@@omgoat power is not measured by jak 3 alone. It can 3x/60fps majority of the ps2 library. You can even try Vulkan backend. But then again, with this screen it's really not worth playing PS2 games on it.
