MSI Claw A1M (Ultra 5): Initial Impressions, Size Comparisons, Gameplay
This is a surprise handheld unboxing and impressions video! Since the Pimax Portal didn't work out (DOA and refunded), I took a chance on a discounted MSIU Claw A1M - the cheaper Ultra 5 edition. The Claw has gotten a lot of bad press in particular because MSI was initially charging premoum prices and - with the state the device was in when it was first shipped - was in no way able to justify those prices.
So now that the next Claw is coming ... how does the original stack up after it's had time to grow with (hopefully) better driver support and a lower price? Let's find out!
This isn't meant to be a full review - if there's interest I could do one after having longer to play with the device. I do want to do some more thorough comparisons to the Deck and Ally and do more with emulation. But this IS a long video, so time stamps are provided below.
Any questions or comments? Leave 'em below!

Ayn Odin 2 Mini - Gameplay Test - Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights (PS2)

I just got a bunch of new (to me) PlayStation 2 games in to try out, so let's get racing. This is "Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights running on the Odin 2 Mini. This is one of those relatively rare titles - that get disproportionally featured on my channel - that requires a bit of tuning to perform on even the most powerful Android handhelds like this one. This game is basically a simpler variant of ...

Time for some FPS games! This is Black for the PlayStation 2. If you like shiny, shiny guns, mowing down lots of people, and long cutscenes - this is going to be a good game choice. This is a strictly single player game, and at the time it was criticized for not having multiplayer modes. Ironically, not relying on multiplayer makes the game something you can pick up here in 2024 without feeling...

    The problem with this is that anbernic now only provides the firmware. There are no games in the image file. I booted my new sd disk in the rg28xx, and it works beautifully, but when I look try to play games like I did before and it says no files. There is a movie and and song to play, but absolutely no games. So I copied all of the files and folders off the old sd card and tried to copy them to the new sd card and it told me that there isn't enough space. Both are 64 gig sd cards. I'm lost.

Perfect, because that's what I will do if I get the console. Do you have by any chance a global configuration guide for setting up the console like you do ? Frontend + emulators + basic parameters... What should I do when I unbox the console type of guide. Thanks for this wonderful channel and the time you're putting into this content ! ❤

    Seems to run quite nicely. How are you finding the ergonomics of the mini? The fact that it’s so heavily inspired by the Vita has me worried, because that machine was a pain when sticks were involved. But the mini has an asymmetrical layout and isn’t an exact copy, so I expect it isn’t quite as bad.

    • @chemicalburrito782
      @chemicalburrito782 10 днів тому

      I find the Mini to be easier to hold and play for stick-centric games than the original Vita. I think there's a couple of reasons for that. First, the more modern left stick placement feels more comfortable to me on a wide device. Plus, I've gotten used to it playing a lot of games on PC with a controller. Another thing is that the Mini has triggers. Stuff like Borderlands 2 on the original Vita could get pretty painful because you have to either press or avoid pressing the back touchpad - which limited how you could hold the device ... not a problem with the Mini. And then there's the sticks themselves - the Mini's sticks feel way better than the Vita sticks. Hooray for bigger, taller sticks! At least so far, I'm not in the market for grips. I can play this for a couple of hours without my hands cramping.

    Nice test, thank you. I recently received thr odin 2 mini. The screen is ok, i am not that impressed with it. I was expecting something amazing, unless I haven't properly set it up . I don't think these retro hand held displays compare that well to a mobile phone display. The ghosting and vignetting isn't an issue for me. I just wish Ayn had squeesed in a 5.5 inch borderless display, they could have just squuezed it in .

    • @chemicalburrito782
      @chemicalburrito782 12 днів тому

      I think if you're comparing these screens to a high-end AMOLED high-refresh-rate phone screen, then you're probably going to be disappointed. What the Mini *does* get you is brightness ... which isn't surprising because that's one of the miniled technology's big selling points. For a handheld, that brightness makes the screen great for playing outside. For these devices (admittedly, this is grading on the curve), the Mini has one of the better screens you can get in terms of its overall quality - brightness, colors, motion artifacts, etc. But yeah ... a high end cellphone screen looks way better.

      @@TunaTales So it's a hot and sunny day today here at the beach - just for a quick exact comparison I took the O2 Mini and my iPhone 12 Pro outside running the same game in full direct sunlight. Before the inevitable throttling/dimming that happens on the iPhone when it's in the sun kicked in, the O2 Mini at full brightness was still brighter and easier to see than my iPhone. I don't think a space sim or other game that's really dark is going to look good on any device in direct sunlight, but other stuff is comfortable on the Mini.

    I got an Odin 2 before I realized there was a screen difference between it and the Mini. I watched many vids of the 2 and was happy with the screen (still am) but definitely not as happy as I could be after seeing it in comparison to the Mini. Are the bezels thinner on the Mini? Kinda looks like it from here. In the end, I should just be thankful I have such a powerful device that can play so many old games in the palm of my hand.

    • @chemicalburrito782
      @chemicalburrito782 12 днів тому

      Sitting the two devices together (I can't find my ruler at the moment for actual numbers), the bezels on both screens are almost exactly the same width on both the top and the sides ... maybe the Mini is SLIGHTLY smaller on the sides. The regular Odin 2 screen does have some of its own advantages, though. If you do any PC game streaming, I think the bigger screen is definitely going to feel more comfortable. Probably the same for games via Winlator.

    Hi if the price is the same would you buy razer edge, odin or rg556?

    • @chemicalburrito782
      @chemicalburrito782 15 днів тому

      Assuming you mean one of the Odin 2 devices when you say "Odin" ... If I was buying one device and the three were the same cost, I would choose an Odin 2. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Odin 2 lets you do things that you just can't do well on the other two devices - like emulating some of the more challenging PS2 games. Or Switch and Windows games via Winlator. Or ZZZ at high graphics settings and 60FPS instead of low graphics and/or 30FPS. Now if you meant the older original Odin devices and not the Odin 2 line ... the Razer Edge, for pretty much the same reason as I'd pick an Odin 2 in the first scenario - the Edge is simply better at doing PS2 emulation (my favorite thing on these devices) than the RG556 or the older Odin line. The fact that the screen and controls would be better on the Edge is a bonus in this situation.

      @@Kaiser0109 If a retro game will play on an RG556, it'll play on the Edge - and will likely play *better* on the Edge. Anbernic DOES preinstall and preconfigure a lot of common retro emulators with their systems, though - so if you don't want to mess with setup you don't have to do a whole lot to get an RG556 going. With the Odin 2 and Edge, you have to install emulators yourself. For some people, having all that preinstalled like Anbernic does is a positive. (A lot of retro gamers delete/reinstall different versions of emulators on the RG556 anyway, but it's not required.)

    Awesome video, thanks! Yeah... damn. The amount of ghosting on the other devices besides the 2 Mini is insane. Now I'm interested in the Edge, because I love high refresh rate screens; my only concern is whether to get the Edge or just look for an oldgen flagship phone. I have a RG405M; I wish I could see a test like this with it, so I can compare. I play Kaizo Mario hacks on it, so less ghosting is better for when I wanna upgrade.

I've heard that they may have used different screens in the older vs newer ones (my RG405M is one of the newer ones with the upgraded shoulder buttons), so the results for mine might be different from yours if you have the older model. If you're using the Wifi Edge, the game's going to be hit or miss because it really wants more RAM. You might have better luck rebooting the Edge and then starting ZZZ as the first app you run afterwards. You don't need to redownload - just attempt to start it again if it crashes. Once it gets past server login, it runs for a while unless you try to back out to another app, at least in my experience. That's why I noted in the video that the game crashes frequently - this video is using the Wifi Edge. (On the 5G model which has 8GB of RAM, the game starts up and runs every time. This is one case where the extra RAM actually matters.)

      You'd notice less blurring in fast transitions and turning the camera around on the Edge (you'd want the 8GB Edge model for the newest games like ZZZ, though I think the 6GB one runs WuWa fine). But the Odin 2 is giving you higher graphics settings across the board - which is definitely something for a game like WuWa. And it's still 60FPS on both devices - you just get more motion blur on the Odin 2. I think if I had to choose for that game, I'd probably choose the Odin 2 like you did.

When playing "Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown" on Yuzu, the delay between the button press and the movement of the character Sagon on ODIN 2 is very clear. When you need to stop, the character will immediately stop.

      The official Anbernic case is the one I had, and it's fine. (The reason my device died wasn't due to the case - I'm leaning towards it being a manufacturing defect that put too much stress on the OLED screen internally and it just eventually cracked on its own.) The good news with finding a case the RG505 is that it's basically a rectangular slab that doesn't need a bottom molded specifically to the device so there are a lot of cases on Amazon for it if you didn't get the official.

I already have a odin2 mini, but just want to see how about the decoding time of razer edge. If the button and decoding latency all lower than odin2 mini, I'll buy it immediately😂

    Love Apple deciding what’s best for the user (and not even telling them). Can you reveal your green screen trick? Cause the slides in the background are added in post, right? What are you pointing at when you’re filming?

      I generally like my iPhone, but there are times when I want to either throw it into the ocean or give it the Dankpods treatment with a lightning-cable equivalent of his Maraca Cracker. Finding out what had been done to my test videos after going through all those frames was ... one of those times! The green screen trick for the slides that I'm using is a fairly simple thing to do with OBS - and one I use sometimes when recording videos for students. I have three sources set up on top of each other: On top there's my camera with the green chroma key filter applied. In the middle, there's an image source (the slides), and then on the bottom there's a third source - which is a duplicate of the first camera feed, but with no chroma key filter. So if I just put my hands - or other objects - on the desk, they will be on top of the slide, otherwise the slide is visible on top of the desk in the recorded video. So I can just point out things on the slides live and see what I'm doing on my monitor.

      Wifi Edge like the one I have? The Wifi Edge has 6GB RAM, which is less than what ZZZ wants to run comfortably. I have had the best luck running the game right after rebooting the Edge so there's less stuff running in the background. Even then you sometimes have to start the game more than once before it gets in without crashing. It's sad because the Edge has plenty of CPU power for the game once you get it to run... Once the game starts on the Edge, it will generally run fine for quite a while. (I'm doing a couple of combat commissions right now on my Edge, in fact!)

    Watching your performance videos, I’m a little let down by the Odin 2. Not that it’s not still pretty impressive, but after videos like RGC’s “Why the Odin 2 is still king” I got the impression you really didn’t have to worry about PS2 emulation, but here I’m seeing a bunch of games I was interested in that have problems. Enough titles that I don’t think it’s that rare to have to do some tweaking, assuming a fix is even possible. Like yeah, the Odin is still a tier above most of the competition, but he presented it as the “everything just works“ device (paraphrasing). I appreciate the reality check.

    • @chemicalburrito782
      @chemicalburrito782 25 днів тому

      The problem here is not so much the Odin 2 itself - it's got a lot of power. The main issue here is that the best PS2 emulation software on Android right now is AetherSX2 (and NetherSX2 which is essentially a binary patch to AetherSX2 to get rid of ads and update game default configurations). AetherSX2 is currently dead in terms of development ... so there are games that work a lot better on PC devices simply because performance-killing bugs that are in AetherSX2 have been fixed in PCSX2 for the PC. I think if you want a system that's as close to "everything just works" for PS2 as possible, you're going to want something like an Ally X, a Legion Go, possibly an OLED Deck, etc. (Just not the Anbernic WIN600 ... just ... no.) Now to be fair to the Odin 2 (I mean ... I like the Odin 2!), a LOT of PS2 games DO fall into the "Just bump the resolution up to 3X and don't touch anything else" category. And as long as you're sticking to Android, the original Odin 2 is probably still the best option for price to performance.

      @@chemicalburrito782 At the end of the day it doesn't really matter whether it's the software or hardware (and I don't think it's always that clear which it is). I don't want to make too big a deal out of this, but I just had the wrong idea about the state of PS2 on the Odin 2 (I thought it was closer to a Deck in that regard). Same goes for the Switch, I think. You just always have to take what you hear online with a grain of salt. That's why raw gameplay tests like this are very useful. I actually had a Deck, and loved it but had ergonomic issues with it. Mostly the weight.

    That's interesting. I was expecting at least 2 frames of difference (~33ms) at 60hz between the odin2 and the rest... This is the result I found by the way when I compared my odin2 and my retroid pocket 2s running Super Mario World in retroarch without runahead or preemptive. I used Gamepad Tester mainly because I was curious to see what the response time was independent of any lag introduced by the various emulators - and also "green light goes on" is pretty easy to see on my camera along with the button press. I would say that there might be something else going on between retroarch and the Odin 2 hardware (drivers?), but the Odin 2 Mini is more responsive than the original Odin 2 and they're nominally the same hardware with a different screen for the Mini. (Like some of the people on Reddit, I "felt" that the Mini was more responsive than the original 2 ... but wanted to see some actual data.)
