This recipe came from the Pillsbury Bake off competition in the late 1980's. My mother had bought the small magazine Pillsbury would sell at the check out. I still have it packed away in storage. I had a baking business in Maine and this recipe was on my menu. It was a best seller. I put sliced almonds on a wreath like pattern on top then sprinkle with sugar before baking to get a sparkley look.
Growing up, my grandma would always make dessert for all family gatherings. This was everyone’s favorite and still is. Even today in her nineties, my grandma still loves to make this family staple and we, all, still love them. What sets her apart is her homemade chocolate frosting that makes it even more delicious. Going to have to pull out the family cookbook and make a batch after watching this video.
no way! my grandma was the same an she made these too! she's passed on now but I will always think of her when I eat these because my mom still makes them
You just sorta answered my question, I was asking if there is an icing suggestion to make it look nice for a special occasion. Can you share more please on how to make your grandmas icing?
YUM!! My favorite local bakery calls these “black and white” cupcakes, but they don’t have chocolate chips in their cheesecake filling. I love these, and your cupcakes look extra amazing! Thank you for sharing! 💜
I like this recipe a lot! I have 4 neighbors who have been very kind to me after I returned home from the hospital. They kindly brought over dinners for me. This spared me the duty of cooking till I could get a little more steady on my feet. So, thinking about what to return with the dishes and containers to my neighbors, I've struggled with what to make for them. This appears to be a perfect treat to include with the dishes. I can't wait to try it and to taste it for myself!
I made these at least 40 years ago in mini muffin foil liners. They were a Christmas treat for many years and looked so pretty on an assorted cookie tray. They are impressive and easy to make. I enjoy your channel.
I am a mom who raised her children in the late 70s… These Blackbottom cupcakes were very popular back then… I still have the recipe… But for some reason the last time I made them the cheesecake did not fall into the middle properly… i'm really out of practice… LOL....So I'm anxious to watch your whole video … Thank you so much!!!
I’ve been making these cupcakes since I was a kid, though the cookbook I learnt from calls them Hidden Giant Cupcakes. So good and glad to see others who enjoy this treat.
I’ve done so many recipes from you and I’m always satisfied! You’re amazing and thank you for your videos! I’m new to baking and I appreciate your videos so much! My first recipe from you is the chocolate cake I made for my sons birthday in 2020 when most bakeries were closed and everyone was quarantined lol. I’ve been baking our own goodies since thanks to you! 💓
I made these today. They are delish. One thing though is I will cut the cream cheese batter recipe in half next time. There was way too much left over. Thanks, John
I made this recipe recently and omg they are very ADDICTIVE little cupcakes. The were super delicious as there weren’t to sweet which makes it the perfect dessert and fed my sweet tooth appetite. 😋 👍 👏
I just made these with skor and semi sweet chocolate chips and ITS THE BEST THING IVE EVER MADE FROM UR CHANNEL!!!!! well, besides your chocolate cupcakes recipe…❤
Thanks for sharing . Black forest cheesecake cupcakes . Looks so delicious and pretty . And very moist looking . You And Family . Enjoy your cupcakes .
I remember having black bottomed cupcakes in the 70’s in San Francisco. I fell in love with them but strangely I never made them. I’ll have to try this recipe out! Yum!
5:50 would add a frozen strawberry or a couple of raspberries to offset the heaviness of the cupcake (fyi, am Australian and find American recipes sweet and heavy/rich)
These were my FAVORITE dessert as a child and I've been looking for a good recipe for years. I'm going to have to try this one because I'm sure it's perfect!
Hi John. I made these earlier but without chocochips. I never liked the name . I'm glad you solved that problem for me. Henceforth I shall call them tuxedo cupcakes! Thanks for the recipe!
I think I would try raspberries or raspberry jam in the cheesecake batter with dark chocolate cocoa powder and maybe dark or semisweet chocolate chips - a be-my-Valentine tuxedo cupcake ❤️
Im sick...scrolling through and looking at yummy desserts. These are definitely that yummy. These were huge in my family. I dont make them as i always seem to over bake them and they come out dry. I can bake everything else but these i struggle. They are delicious with a tiny scoop of cherry pie filling dolloped into the cheesecake mixture and thick ganache drizzeled heavily on top of cupcake. You asked, and since im not willing w/how i feel to scroll to see if someone else answered, i will. This recipe was, as you stated, a winner in a baking competition. Pillsbury, 1962 13th Annual National Bake Off. Uggg i hate to type this but its how it was done back then (my grandmother was proudly mrs cullen r pfendler) Mrs Leonard Geisert, from Lakewood California won Senior First prize for these. Now you know!
I have not had one of these cupcakes before! Looks so good! 😋 I have made your peanut butter cookies, the sugar cookies, and biscuits. They all turned out amazing! Can't wait to make more of your recipes. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
I looked for your email and could not find it and feel so bad totally off topic. I adore you so much because you have brought my skill level up in just 6 months and because of this my friends and family are so happy. I have a challenge for you and praying with all my heart you can make . My Ex Husbands grandmother was French / Creole and she made something called Comfit ? It was garlic with green Tabasco peppers . She passed many years ago and my Roast and Pork has been sad ever since. I have every conference you will make my heart happy and you are adored .
Yum! I’ve never heard of “black bottom” but seen some variations of cheesecake brownies on Pinterest. These look delicious, excited to try it out! PS you’re “I don’t have that power… not yet” had me chuckling. I’m sure if you took over the world with your amazing treats and food, everyone would be much happier!
This is very similar to the cake what we make in Hungary, called Cow cake "Boci szelet". (because of the black and white spots) :) I will definitely try this cupcake out, it looks so fun.
I never heard about this dessert, it looks incredible! I would maybe try adding coconut flakes as a variation cause i love chocolate and coconut together
You mentioned to let you know if we would do something extra to the cupcakes... I think I would like to add some caramel fudge bits to the cheesecake mixture, just because my sweet tooth can never be satisfied. Pecans or hazelnuts sound divine too, though!
Baltimore, they are a staple in the Baltimore area. Every bakery and grocery store in Maryland has carried them for my entire life. Not sure where they originated, my guess is Baltimore or points south.
Made these the other day and they were delicious...only problem was I could only fill 9 of the 12 cups...they didn't overflow so next time I will scale up the recipe by one third and have 3 more delicious cupcakes to eat 😋
I’ve opened a can of cherry pie filling and added one cherry covered in glaze on top of each cupcake. You can put it between the black and white batters if you like. Don’t go overboard with the glaze; leave at least half of it in the can.
BTW...your merengue cookies were wonderful. I'm going to try them with stevia for my diabetic mom. John if you have any desserts with stevia please share!
Love vanilla- always double dose. I'm going to try to make gluten free version for special occasion - any suggestions on topping/icing somehow to make it look better that go well with this and can I leave out the choc chips (maybe melt into a frosting instead)?
Very nice recipie John! They looks amazing! Can you make us cupcake brownie cheesecake? Where you get the shifted wen you use in these video? They looks very nice! Have a nice day and good month! 👍👏🍫🍫🍫
Definitely trying this. Would use some walnuts or pecans. Always like them with chocolate. Wonder if the name came from the dance? Vanilla in the cheese cake portion?

Every time someone skips vanilla in their recipe because John said it was optional, an angel cries
😄
Some people don't deserve John's recipes. The people who Skip vanilla are one of those groups.
🤣🤣🤣
Extra definetly
For God's sakes please use full size chocolate chips too. Dark chocolate chips.
Because of YOU JOHN, I have bought me a scale! So glad I did ☺️! Less dishes and accurate measurements! Thank you 💓😊!
YAYYYYY DAWN!!!!! 💖

Oh, thanks for the sweet reminder! Years ago I used to make these for school bake sales. Many years ago! Love them.

I have enjoyed Black-bottoms for the past 30 years. They are delicious.
I’ve been making these cupcakes since I was a kid, though the cookbook I learnt from calls them Hidden Giant Cupcakes. So good and glad to see others who enjoy this treat.
Haha and we call them Magic Cupcakes 🤨 I think these cupcake have a lot of different names 😄
I just made this recipe from your website a few weeks ago! So so good, and really settled my chocolate cupcake craving at 10pm. Love all your baking!
Never seen these, but I do love Black Bottom Pie. The touch of Rum flavor in it really takes the pie to the next level.
These Cheesecake Brownie 🍫 cupcakes are a great treat for August. Thank you John! 💝

SOOOO good! I love all your treats but especially the unique ones! Thank you for turning me into a better baker - my other passion 🤍
I made this recipe recently and omg they are very ADDICTIVE little cupcakes. The were super delicious as there weren’t to sweet which makes it the perfect dessert and fed my sweet tooth appetite. 😋 👍 👏
I have a double batch of these in the oven right now! I'm so excited! We have a boat & I am always looking for easy to pack yummy snacks!
My Grandmother also made these when I was growing up! Love them!

My birthday was this past Sunday, and I made your Biscuits for breakfast. They were awesome. Tomorrow I am making your cherry pie. I am so excited.
I think I would try raspberries or raspberry jam in the cheesecake batter with dark chocolate cocoa powder and maybe dark or semisweet chocolate chips - a be-my-Valentine tuxedo cupcake ❤️

These look great man. Could you please show us how to make a classic Bolognese sauce next?
They’re making me hungry! I haven’t made them for quite a while, so I better get cooking!
I’ve opened a can of cherry pie filling and added one cherry covered in glaze on top of each cupcake. You can put it between the black and white batters if you like. Don’t go overboard with the glaze; leave at least half of it in the can.

My mom made these in the 70’s!! 🙂
I’m from Nova Scotia, my grandma called these girdle snappers!😅
My mom has made these for years. She uses a boxed cake mix for the cupcakes and does her cream cheese the same as this video.
Love vanilla- always double dose. I'm going to try to make gluten free version for special occasion - any suggestions on topping/icing somehow to make it look better that go well with this and can I leave out the choc chips (maybe melt into a frosting instead)?
Hi John, thanks for this amazing recipe! I think some toasted almonds and coconut would be good- almost like an almond joy situation. 🙂

Hello, is the egg necessary in the cream cheese batter or can it be replace by anything else? Thank you 🙂
