  • John Paul White, formerly of the duo The Civil Wars, plays "The Good Old Days" live in concert at The Chapel in San Francisco, California on June 16, 2019. The Good Old Days appears on his new solo album, The Hurting Kind, released in April through Single Lock Records. JPW has said this about the song: "It’s really me wondering, what era of America are people wanting to get back to? I’m having a hard time thinking of one we haven’t progressed from, or shouldn’t progress from. As a father, I see the world through their eyes and I’m wondering what we’re leaving for them, what they’re heading into, and how it can be improved upon - and how it can be improved upon for every single person on this earth and not just a select few."
In 2008, John Paul White and Joy Williams formed The Civil Wars, a critically-acclaimed duo that went on to win four Grammy Awards, including Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance. To the great sadness of their many fans, The Civil Wars disbanded in 2014. Since that time, JPW has released two country/folk solo albums: Beulah in 2016 and The Hurting Kind in 2019. Joining JPW onstage at The Chapel were Shonna Tucker (bass), Adam Morrow (guitar), Reed Watson (drums), Kimi Samson (fiddle), and Todd Beene (pedal steel guitar).

    The Good Old Days lyrics:
    There's something going down
In this simple place I grew up in
    Boots are on the ground
Singing, "Happy days are here again"
    There's something in the air
The deaf can hear, the blind can see
    Nostalgia everywhere
Saying, "Let's get back to how it used to be"
Before we head down that road
Tell me something I don't know
Oh, what's so good about the good old days?
Yeah, what's so good about the good old days?
    It's taken oh so long
For the world to start to understand
    The true and equal worth
Of every woman and every man
We've got so very far to go
So tell me something I don't know
Oh, what's so good about the good old days?
Yeah, what's so good about the good old days?
    There's something going down
In this simple place I grew up in
    It's burning to the ground
And it will never be the same again
The past is ash and dust
Our best days are in front of us
Oh, what's so good about the good old days?
Yeah, what's so good about the good old days?
Tell me, what's so good about the good old days?
Yeah, what's so good about the good old days?

    John Paul White official bio:
John Paul White grew up in tiny Loretto, Tennessee, and now lives in Florence, Alabama, not far from Muscle Shoals. He has cultivated his career in Nashville for two decades, first as a songwriter for a major publisher, then as half of The Civil Wars - a groundbreaking duo that won four Grammy Awards before disbanding in 2012. Because The Civil Wars were so hard to categorize, White has earned a fan base among indie rock listeners, folk audiences, Americana outlets, and AAA radio. With The Hurting Kind, White has crafted a stunning album that draws on the lush, orchestrated music made in Nashville in the early 1960s. Yet these songs retain a modern feel, whether he’s writing about overwhelming love, unraveling relationships, or the fading memory of a loved one. So, what will happen if people hear The Hurting Kind and call it country? “Well, that doesn’t scare me in the least,” he says. “As a matter of fact, it kind of thrills me.”
