This song is haunting and beautiful. I can't shake it. I come back to listen to this song again and again.
Murray Williams oh my soul
That's because he has so much mystery in his song's, we never know who it's about!😉
JPW is such an underrated artist. I'm still heartbroken The Civil Wars broke up before I could see them live during their european tour. I truely hope I can catch up and see both seperately live someday but mostly John Paul. His music is so wonderful. It's hauntingly gorgeous what he can do with nothing but his voice and a guitar. ...and his lyrics are beautiful.
This should win a Grammy. The delivery, the guitar playing the lyrics. Everything. This is a wonderful song.
Hmm, about joy? Maybe I'm reading in to it to much.... an absolutely beautiful song either way. Such an amazing voice and the chords that he finds are just breathtaking.
I thought the same thing. If so... heartbreaking ...
Murray Williams .. Agreed.
I thought it was about her too. I agree his voice is so beautiful.
Nah, I think you're right. If so, it's truly heartbreaking...and very human...to hold on to such bitterness towards someone who obviously never intended harm. Dude, John, the more you say "I never really loved you anyway" the more it's obvious that you did and that you didn't take losing well at all. Thing is, she's a devout Christian who married for love; I'd never expect someone like that to break their marriage for me. Moreover, I'm not sure he really wanted her to, nor that he would've left his wife and children for her; but he convinced himself he did and that he would've, because he's got a bit of a martyr complex. Typical tormented Catholic, I guess. I was in love with one of those myself, long ago, and what an emotional wringer he put me through, bless his soul. Well, whatever John has told himself at dark moments, it was always clear to the rest of us that she loved him too, and that the rupture cost her just as much. Maybe someday he'll be able to feel that truth. An equally good guy who loved her just as much simply got there first, that's all; and she had to honor that.
Funny, I haven't pondered any of this in ages, but this song brought the thoughts back. It's utterly lovely and sad. This guy is such a legendary talent. I'd love to have seen him hanging out with Johnny Cash, a similarly deep, dark, beautiful spirit and musician.
As much as a songwriter *might* be autobiographical, it’s just as much they are using a narrator. Were all of Kristofferson songs about him personally? On Sunday morning coming down, did he really walk around town or did he construct a narrator? I think assuming all art is biographical is reductive and removes giant swaths of experiencing music
That song is great on every level.
This song is stupid good. The chords are fucking gorgeous
Someone's gonna hold your hand
And everything will click
Touch you in some unknown way that finally does the trick
Put you a fairytale where you meant to be
That someone, that someone won't be me
Someone's out there praying for
The day that you walk you in
And happy ever after could finally begin
Someone who'll stop at nothing
To give you all you need
That someone, that someone won't be me
And that's okay
I never really loved you anyway
At least not unconditionally
Like subjects love the once and future queen
If I thought I was good for you
If I thought this could work
I'd reach a little higher
And pull you back to earth
But the man you're really looking for
The one in all your dreams
That someone, that someone won't be me
And that's okay
You never really loved me anyway
Not enough to meet me half the way
Oh love's something you can only take
And that's okay
I never really loved you anyway
At least not unconditionally
Like subjects love the once and future queen
Chords & fingerplay & rhythm that is very unusual and creates sublime sounds and emotions.
An incredible talent. That voice is amazing!
You sing so beautiful! Great song! You sound like Atlanta Rhythm Section. Imaginary Lover. Keep up the good work
Atlanta. Sorry for the typo
Always beautiful John 🙌🏻🙌🏻😍❤️
Solid man!
Beautiful. Thank you.
So so good!
I think it might be about Joy...They did have quite a musical connection. They were both married with kids. Do you really think they had an affair? And where did you guys hear this? Each time I get on here to listen to a Civil War. Song or a Joysong or a John Paul White song. I hear everybody saying oh, they had to break up. Cause they had an affair, and there's this song that joy wrote. After they broke up, called. Meet me at a hotel Castaneda. Maybe about him JPW when I first heard it I went. Ohhhh Boy what do you guys think? ANGY
So perfect!

Pretty obvious who this beautiful song is about. I'm more sure than I was six years ago, because since then, her husband turned on her with strikingly similar bitterness. Even several years later, he still pointedly flaunts his younger new wife constantly on his social media. Their over-the-top lovey-dovey stuff definitely feels as if he's rubbing it in Joy's face, or trying to. Figured it would turn out like that in the end. Kiss two boys, lose them both...male pride never forgives. She's bitter too though. I noticed that in her social media post about the new Taylor Swift "Safe and Sound" recording, she cropped the photo of their Grammy performance to cut John out. I personally think getting them both to work on the re-do was something only Taylor could ever have achieved. (And even then, they reportedly recorded their tracks separately.)
I'm deeply grateful to Taylor, but I don't believe the new S&S is anything more than a one-off. Heartbreaking, but some relationships are just not fixable. I wish people would quit publicly begging them to reunite. I understand, but it's cringey. I too long for more Civil Wars music; together, they were far more than the sum of their parts (and they are *wonderful* solo artists.) It was a truly remarkable alchemy. But if they ever work together again--and I don't believe they will--it should be because they truly want to, not because everyone keeps bugging them.

Are you from the 80's?
I need a guitar tutorial for this song...
There are a lot of techniques employed by JPW here. Hammer on, pull off, strumming styles, and the list goes on.
He did make a little tutorial for this song on his UA-cam channel. He also did one for Black Leaf I believe.
This could amazing with a band like MOrange has going on or MilkCartonKids
