You should absolutely continue to read Berserk Sean. If you think Vagabond has great art, you need to get a load of the later volumes. Over half of Miura's story belongs in an art museum. The way the plot progresses beyond the Golden Age (masterpiece) is amazing. And Guts is still a GOAT character, nevermind manga.
Vinland Saga is utterly fantastic. Even if it's restricted to the mediums of manga and anime, I truly think it's one of the greatest stories ever told. I can't shut up about how good it is
@@hayllaporto3312 Lol you're gonna LOVE it! Very brutal series but its themes are endearing and very philosophical. Seeing the protagonist grow into a truly good person in contrast to his past, some of the most complex characters i.e. Askeladd, amazing art etc. I hope you enjoy it :)
@Seanreadscomics Ok, to start; watch the 2011 version. It is undisputably the better one. It does all the same arcs as the 1999 version but animated better, with better music and voice acting _plus_ it includes the Chimera Ant arc which is, in my opinion, the best, most tightly written arc in all of anime and manga, and I've spent a _lot_ of time watching anime.
Seanreadscomics Oh okay, but after you finish the anime pick up the manga from that point on because right after the show ends and the manga picks up is some of the best stuff in the series

And I'm not a sub > dub elitist but you really need to watch the anime in subtitles because the Japanese voice actors interject such emotional depth that the American voice actors never compare to. Also, yeah.. the 2011 version. The 1999 version is definitely great, but the 2011 version has way better pacing and animation.
As a gigantic Anime & Manga nerd, the fact that you talk about Manga on your channel is one of my favorite things about you! I get it's not something everyone would be into, but it always makes me sad how little recognition it gets around book tube. Manga has so much potential for storytelling, I feel there is a lot of stories that wouldn't work nearly as well in other media. I'll def pick up some of these at some point, there is a lot of series I've been considering for a while so I'll use this as the final push to finally start with them haha. The only one I've tried is Punpun and while it was good, it stressed me out too much so I dropped it. I feel like you might also enjoy Kenshin if you haven't read it yet (I feel like you propably have, but if not, it might work for you). My other two favorites are Pandora Hearts and Nana, not sure either would be up your ally tho. Nana has some of the most realistic portrayal of human struggle and human relationships that I've ever read. It's seriously beautiful, tho beware, it might never get finished due to sickness of the mangaka.
Speaker: "I've read 14 volumes of Berserk..." A death hush fell over the audience as a lone "DAMMMN!" rang out from somewhere high up in the third balcony.
I'm getting back on reading manga, but one of my favorites was I am a hero! It's a seinen that is placed in a zombie apocalypse, with a superb, realistic art style.
I guess my favorite is One Piece, Oda makes so many good stories with incredible background. The beginning is slow cause Oda takes his time to introduce his characters but then stuff gets really crazy and it’s amazing. Also people tend to not give One Piece a chance because it’s too long but trust me, once you get really into it, you will finish it before you know it, it goes quick.
Oda does too many background storys lately that are not needed. OP would be so much better if he focused more on bringing the story forward faster. And the anime would be godtier with faster episodes but ofc they ruin it with fillers because it would catch up.
Very curious to read Dead Dead Demons! Saving it for a rainy day. I've recently started Vinland Saga and loving it, and the Vagabond hiatus continues to be a constant pain. I'm also reading Dr. Stone right now, which surprised me with how well it explores characters and themes
@Seanreadscomics Real has been on a tentative list for a while, should probably get to it soon. And I've just hit the 7th 2in1 volume of Vinland Saga and I have words... and a bit of an existential crisis
Hi I like manga/anime and I have way too many recommendations: Saiyuki is pretty good if you want a fantasy/action adventure manga. It's like a more violent version of the Chinese classic Journey to the West with more demons and guns and a dragon that turns into a Jeep. Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba is amazing but has a slow beginning, but is more shounen than mature. If you end up liking JoJo's, you can try Gintama (but the jokes are pretty juvenile and not for everyone). It's basically the Bakumatsu period in Japanese history, but instead of westerners opening up Japan to foreign influences, it's aliens. The ending for the series also drags on because the author was lazy and procrastinated the ending like 3 times. This isn't actually a manga, but Baccano was a good anime and actually had an amazing dub. It's about immortal mafias and alchemists in the 1930s in America. The light novels for it are amazing and the author is creating his own version of the Cosmere universe. Another not a manga and not a mature series is Witch hunter (or Witch buster as it's published in the US). It's a manhwa that's about an organization that kills witches. It's more shounen-y than anything.
I remember when 'Blade of the Immortal' first came out the in the West, publishers tried to censor the swastika in his back having notes in the first pages "no! no! it means s-something else in Asia...".
You should definitely read REAL by Takehiko Inoue same mangaka as Vagabond. The story is about the struggle of 3 unfortunate guys , that only have in common their love for basketball. It's a sport manga , but much more than that.It deals with disability and sports. For some reason I don't feel like reading Asno Iniou , even though he has such good reviews , and the content sounds like something I'd love , but I just can get pass the name title (I know it's silly!) and little things that don't click me in the right way haha, anyway I will give it a shot this year , it deserves it.
I recommend Naoki Urasawa's other series: Pluto (which is based on Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy) and Billy Bat (Which is a mystery thriller revolving around a artist who keep seeing his creation everywhere). Both are fantastic. I would also like to recommend Planetes if you're into sci fi/space series and it's by the same guy that made Vinland Saga. And another one which is one of my favs of all time: Devilman by Go Nagai which is a dark take on the superhero genre but then it turns into a biblical epic with a anti nuclear weapons message behind it. The beginning portions are kinda cheesy because of the time it was made but still fun at the same time. It also has a fantastic anime adaptation called Devilman Crybaby if you're into watching anime.

Berserk is great, but not everyone has to love it. So glad to see 20th Century Boys on this list, I prefer it to Monster as well! Vagabond is another favourite of mine too. Strong list!
There is a lot I love about Berserk, but after getting 2/3 of the way through it I had to take a break....as much as I want to see how the story continues, the sexual violence was just getting to be a little too much for me
@@noonlemur Really? Weirdly the sexual violence is kind of tertiary to me at this point. I know it's what a lot of people remember about it, I guess because it's so shocking. I believe Vagabond is based on a 1935 book. Personally Death Note is my favorite. But the others all sound good. Also recommend "Claymore". Fantastic series.
@Seanreadscomics btw Sean the Death Note anime really gets you into it with the camera angles and the music and just the way they film the scenes. So it's a fair bit more engaging than the Manga. However, there are slight differences here and there which I think make more sense in the manga, so I'd say the Death Note manga is still worth reading.
I loved Claymore. Great art and story (Raki was annoying though) I personally did Not enjoy Death Note. But I seem to be in the minority. Introduced to many friends and they all loved it. I think it just comes down to personal taste. I do admit that it is done very well, but just wasn’t my cup of tea.
@@mafxarr8776 Raki is a kid in the first half so he does act like a kid. But I found him to be a great character in the 2nd half after the (minor spoiler) time skip. @Seanreadscomics yeah fist of the north star can definitely be a challenge to find but i think you'll really love the Fist Of The North Star ps4 game. The Dragon Ball mangas go more in depth than the show. Thanks for the reply & you should do comics next 😄👍
Great list Sean! I find it funny how I've read all of your recommendations. Urasawa is my favorite, but I personally like Monster and Pluto more. Twentieth Century Boys (and 21st Century Boys) is a close third. Inoue's works are excellent, but I know the anguish of waiting for years not only for Vagabond, but for Real (his other ongoing series). As for other mature works, if you're into horror or the like, might I recommend any of Junji Ito's work or Tsutomu Takahashi's Skyhigh. If you prefer something violent and/or gory, check out Hiroya Oku's Gantz and Inuyashiki. If you like something sports-related, try the aforementioned Real and Shinichi Sakamoto's Kokou no Hito (Climber). Though, I don't know the availability of most of those titles in English (I've read them in Japanese). If you find any of those, I highly recommend you read them.
I’ve been thinking of getting the deluxe editions of Uzumaki and Tomie by Junji Ito . The reviews and synopsis really made it seem like my kinda thing, as I’m into the horror genre. I also wanna purchase the Fullmetal editions of the Fullmetal Alchemist that are currently out. They look so beautiful and it was one of my favorite mangas/anime’s so definitely gotta add to my collection. Your recommendations were interesting. You seem to be really into the tragic and tear jerking stuff seems like
I really enjoyed the Monster anime so should really check out 20th Century Boys. I love Vagabond, the art really is the best. I recommend the Eiji Yoshikawa 'Musashi' novel if you want to read the complete original story (particularly as I don't know if the manga will ever get there at this rate). I've read all of Blade of the Immortal, that is actually getting a pretty cool anime version right now if you're interested. Vinland I'm happy watching the anime at the moment but if that doesn't get a complete run I'm sure to hop onto the manga. My recommendation would be Gantz by Hiroya Oku. It's the sort of manga that, at least in my case, once you start reading it you can't stop. Full of action, very violent/adult and you'll never guess where the story winds up going. Dark Horse are even doing Omnibus editions for you : P
Nijigahara holograph is one of my favorite of Asano's works. It's dark and borderline grotesque at times. But the deeper meaning is fascinating. You find something new with every reread. My other favorite adult manga series is Gangsta. If you want to see the consequences of war. That is another one to check out
Thanks for the great recommendations. I just started getting into manga. So far I’ve read a bunch of Berserk and Full Metal Alchemist and I like both, but those seem to be the ones everyone talks about. It was nice hearing about something different. I’m definitely going to go check out Dead Dead Demons. Any Sean that knows how to spell his name correctly has to be trustworthy!
Thanks for the recs. Much appreciated. I haven't watched all the videos with Sean in them but of those I have this is the one he seemed most comfortable. Cool.
I am always looking for new manga recommendations! The Demons one sounds really interesting with the mix of slice of life and sci fi. Also I may have to get into Vinland Saga with the all hype! I am currently reading Death Note but the first half is better than the last half so far. I have read all of Fullmetal Alchemist and I think it is still my favorite manga so far!
As fellow manga reader, I suggest you to read Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia and Cells At Work. They have amazing art style, plots, endearing characters and personalities.
@Seanreadscomics as for BNHA, it honestly comes down to preference. The anime adaption is very true to the manga, while the soundtrack and animation definitely help push the "hype" feel the series gives you. I'd say neither is superior so go with whatever medium you like better!
Love the comics and manga content keep it up! Lone Wolf and Cub is another great samurai comic with some stellar fight scenes. A little more grounded (at the start at least), but still really good.
I have read and enjoy most of the list you recommended. Thanks There is also a 21st century boys that wraps up 20th century boys. :) Btw recently also enjoyed psychological seinens like Kaiji, OneOuts, Akagi
Hey there. How are you doing? Boy, you just reminded me how super long it has been since I have read a manga. The last one that I picked up, was the Ancient Magus Bride and a little bit of the Bleach manga before my iPad went out. It has been a few years. I am currently listening to the third book in the Wheel of Time series, the Dragon Reborn, by Robert Jordan.
You're probably aware of that but Solanin is another masterpiece by Asano and I would recommend before Punpun cause it's shorter and "easier" entry point to Asano's work
I watch anime but never read manga and suddenly I got the urge to find some good mangas. I did a search on UA-cam and found one made by Sean! Ah, YAS! *Jonathan’s Voice from Fab 5* I love a story with an ending. Lol. So no Vagabond for me. I am already sad about Saga.
Haven't really made the plunge into manga, am more an anime guy.. but those do sound and look real good. Vinland Saga is one of the anime I've recently started watching, liking it so far 👍 Really should try and pick up one of those completed series. Thanks 🤘
Sean I'm so glad you decided to forego recommending Berserk, because like you said EVERYONE recommends it. I'm glad I walked away from this video with new manga to read that I've never even heard of. Also have you been watching the Vinland anime? It makes me so happy to see Thors animated!!!!
For my suggestion, I suggest Baki the Grappler (or Grappler Baki, I think it's been called that before). It's hand-to-hand combat where ludicrousness is turned to 11, the main character has to defeat his father, his father being so strong that whole countries are afraid of him.
If you like manga that doesnt have action but is very character heavy you might want to check out march comes in like a lion. I have only watched the anime for it but it is one of my favorite stories ever told
I don't read a lot of manga. Thanks for the recs. Have you read Nausicca? It's one of my favorite stories ever. I remember Elliot talking about Vinland Saga. I'll see if it's at my local bookstore. Sounds cool
So I’ve been wanting to read manga, but I don’t want to buy single issues. So these large books have my attention. In the manga world what is the difference between an omnibus and a perfect edition?
Never considered manga much, but you’ve got me thinking. Can I ask for a rec for a first timer? I know you like noire, I’m also a fan, that and history are my things. 20th C boys sounded kinda noire...got a bit of a blade runner feel?...and Vinland saga sound most interesting. Also, is this strictly a hardcopy medium? Like is Manga kindle a thing, and/or should it not be?
Oh, as always I spoke too soon. Read a couple novels on Musashi, that might be interesting, and of course your last one answered my question about digital.
@Sean the golden age is pretty much generic medieval shit with a twist or two( and the most fuckep up eniding possible). Then you get the conviction arc wich is the darkest. Then you get the falcon millenium empire arc where you get the full D&D crew and fantasia where its just all blown out of proportion. In my opinion the golden age is the weakest part of it.
Blade of the Immortal is great! Well... except for the ending... I didn't like that ending 😑 Switching topics, Sean, have you maybe read One Piece? It's my favorite manga! 💖
If any of you like Vinland Saga and Berserk, I’d also recommend Wolfsmund. It’s a completed historical fiction Seinen set in Hapsburg Switzerland, and it has perhaps the most despicable antagonist I’ve ever read. I hate this guy more than Griffith, because he’s more simple and realistic in his particular brand of horrible dude. So if you can put up with some incredibly bleak content, it’s very good.
@@TheTrueRandomGamer that's probably a better way to put it it like I would definitely rank beserk (when trying to be objective) over pretty much all the seasonal anime (and shonen jump like MHA) that are popular right now but I'm just not as into the series as a lot of other fans when it comes to a subjective view
I think the best way to highlight the quality of Berserk is to compare it to other series. As an example, there are so many "tragic" backstories in manga/anime/fiction that just come off as generic and don't really have the intended impact on the reader. You could highlight anything from Tanjirou's backstory in Demon Slayer to Thorfinn's backstory, and in 99% of these cases, the intended impact just isn't there. That's not the case with Guts. To this day, I have not encountered any backstory that the same impact on me that Guts' backstory (aka the Golden Age Arc) did. Comparing, say Tanjirou's backstory to Guts' backstory, and it's very obvious; Berserk did it better. You could also compare things like meta-narrative structure, antagonists, etc., and I think when you start going down that rabbit hole, it quickly becomes obvious that Berserk is up there.
@Seanreadscomics I thought it was amazing (first 2 arcs). Keep in mind that i was a little younger at the time and i started with anime (which is mostly canon), not manga. Also the series is decreasing in quality and popularity, and its still not finished. In fact it became so unpopular that they stopped making anime (one of the reasons - they had other issues as well). Still, first half was awesome as hell.
Elliot looks very different in this video.

Pluto is so good! Was totally expecting just a 'darker and edgier" book, but man! That's how one improves on a classic!
Very nice assortment of books on Elliot's shelf top row: Legend series, The Book Thief, Skyward series, Red Rising series.
You seem to be really into the tragic and tear jerking stuff seems like
Go read REAL it's from Takehiko Inoue and it is my favorite series from him. (also seinen) and very REAL.
Its my favorite as well it’s so good
its still only 84 chap i guess idk i just don't wanna go into the series that are ongoing specially when u have a lot of ongoing manga u followed
I highly recommend both spy x family and hells paradise (hells paradise has a bit of nudity but not much) they’re both ongoing but both are so good!!!
Death Note is my favourite. As an anime, and I like it so much I read the manga for it as well.
Great recommendations
As fellow manga reader, I suggest you to read Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia and Cells At Work. They have amazing art style, plots, endearing characters and personalities.
@Seanreadscomics Depends on your liking. You go for both, anime and manga.
@Seanreadscomics as for BNHA, it honestly comes down to preference. The anime adaption is very true to the manga, while the soundtrack and animation definitely help push the "hype" feel the series gives you. I'd say neither is superior so go with whatever medium you like better!
For My Hero Academia, I'd recommend anime, as the fight scenes are beautifully animated. Also, Cells at Work is pure fun ^^
I would love for him to do more videos about manga and comics.
Love the comics and manga content keep it up! Lone Wolf and Cub is another great samurai comic with some stellar fight scenes. A little more grounded (at the start at least), but still really good.
I've been wanting a manga recommendations video!! This is great 😁
I have read and enjoy most of the list you recommended. Thanks
There is also a 21st century boys that wraps up 20th century boys. :)
Btw recently also enjoyed psychological seinens like Kaiji, OneOuts, Akagi
2:05 Naoki Urasawa? now that's a man of culture
Apparantly inoe is going to continue real so vagabond might have a chance
You're probably aware of that but Solanin is another masterpiece by Asano and I would recommend before Punpun cause it's shorter and "easier" entry point to Asano's work
Try reading Kingdom. Excellent story, art and a huge cast of compelling characters
Thank you for this list as I'm seeking new reads.
I watch anime but never read manga and suddenly I got the urge to find some good mangas. I did a search on UA-cam and found one made by Sean! Ah, YAS! *Jonathan’s Voice from Fab 5*
I love a story with an ending. Lol. So no Vagabond for me. I am already sad about Saga.
Haven't really made the plunge into manga, am more an anime guy.. but those do sound and look real good.
Vinland Saga is one of the anime I've recently started watching, liking it so far 👍
Really should try and pick up one of those completed series.
Thanks 🤘
Thanks for the recommendations, was looking for something new. 😎
So many of my favourites on this list! All that's missing is Taiyo Matsumoto :D
These are the essential adult manga....only one missing was Monster.
If you like manga that doesnt have action but is very character heavy you might want to check out march comes in like a lion. I have only watched the anime for it but it is one of my favorite stories ever told
does the Vinland saga have a feel that is similar to The banner saga series of games? Since it's about vikings
Nope. Different themes completely.
I'll keep those in mind. Thanks!
I don't read a lot of manga. Thanks for the recs. Have you read Nausicca? It's one of my favorite stories ever.
I remember Elliot talking about Vinland Saga. I'll see if it's at my local bookstore. Sounds cool
Read everything but one, good list (haven't read Vagabond yet😭)
You don't have to like Berserk but 🥺🥺 it just hurts. It gets so good but, I still respect the opinion..... smh "you did nothing wrong"
I know this is an old video but I hope Elliot or Sean will try to read One Piece someday
Do you think you could do a video on how to read manga?? I know it´s dumb but I´ve never tried it and kinda wanna know the right way to go about it.
also beginner recs?
So I’ve been wanting to read manga, but I don’t want to buy single issues. So these large books have my attention. In the manga world what is the difference between an omnibus and a perfect edition?
Have you watched the Vinland Saga and the Blade of the Immortal anime ?
We have!
"If you've read it you know, if you haven't read it you don't know" 🤣
Never considered manga much, but you’ve got me thinking.
Big fan of one piece and attack on titan manga and vinland saga very good to
attack on titan is my favorite manga of all time
You should also read a manga name "records of Ragnarok". It's full on hype.
Can we get another manga recommendation video 🥺😭😭😭
Berserk over everything, but other then that cool list
great video, I do wanna get more into manga so this is perfect :D
great recommandations although i read or am reading most of it
hey man i would recommend reading attack on titan jojos bizarre adventure and dr. stone those are my favorites right now that are not on the list.
Forgotten realms books behind you? If so RESPECT
I need to know if both you and Elliot have goodreads accounts because so many of the books you both recommend are ones i want to add to my tbr list
Also more sean and couple's videos please ❤
Am I mistaken or do I see the polish version of Mistborn in the background? o.O
Rosario Vampire
Vampire Knight
FMA
Blue Exorcist
OHSHC
Death Note
Black Butler
Attack on Titan
Vagabond is awesome.
Weeb! (Blade of the Immortal is really good.)
Nice recommendations! Have you tried "Monster" by Naoki Urasawa?
Monster is incredible! Johann is one of the most fascinating antagonists I've ever read
You haven't read enough Berserk lol. It gets way better after Golden age arch imo.
@Seanreadscomics imo it's not. To me it's basically build up to what's actually happening in the story.
@Sean I also highly recommend Akira wich is extremely easy to get into since its just that good
@@Struggler12349 wrong black swordsman arc is the weakest part.
Do you read any other comics? Huge comic guy right here and always looking for more comic Channels. Good job Sean
The reason the family in pun pun is depicted like that is because the writer wants the reader to be able to imagine it as themselves.
Plz often make manga recomendation videos
I also don’t get the adoration Berserk gets, I mean it is good but I wouldn’t put it on a top manga list neither. Sean knows what’s up!
I feel the same about beserk and jojo's like they're good but I find them to be over talked about and hyped
It absolutely is a top tier manga. But it's alright if you guys don't like it as much as others.
Great video!!
You should put text on screen for the titles. And please try read sigurui
Which site can I get the English mangas from?
That JAW!
Good vid
This is awesome
YEEESSS!!!!!!
a video on light novels?
If you liked goodnight pun pun, you'll probably like welcome to the NHK by the way.
What do you think of Bleach?
@Seanreadscomics I thought it was amazing (first 2 arcs). Keep in mind that i was a little younger at the time and i started with anime (which is mostly canon), not manga. Also the series is decreasing in quality and popularity, and its still not finished. In fact it became so unpopular that they stopped making anime (one of the reasons - they had other issues as well). Still, first half was awesome as hell.
If you need a list to read berserk I don’t think you are ready for it.
blade of the immortal over Berserk and One Piece? Damn
