Death Note is soo interesting and Orange is just...so sad...I cried my eyes out. I really love them but my favourite manga remains Pandora Hearts, which was both and so much more. Also Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) too.
Okayyyy first of all I’m loving that shirt!! 👌🏻 second of all I literally just bought Orange because of you! It’s gonna be my first manga ahhh!! ☺️💜 I can’t wait to read it!
I just finished Orange yesterday. It was such an amazing story with a very strong message.Thank you for always talking about it.It made me want to read it and boy am I glad!!!
Omg Jesse you read my mind! I’ve been wanting to get more into graphic novels, my husband and I even went to a little shop near where we live just yesterday. Thanks for your recs! ❤️
If you like watching anime, you should definitely check out Hunter x Hunter. It's one of my absolute favorites, and it's so underrated in my opinion. It's a little long, but it's worth it
I recently read the first volume for the manga My Brother’s Husband, and it was freaking wonderful. Really cute and really sad about homosexuality in Japan. Volume 2 is coming out in a few days and I think that completes the whole story. I’m also totally obsessed with Yona of the Dawn. Bratty princess loses everything and becomes a badass to reclaim her throne with the help of her boy crew. Also love Assassination Classroom. Middle schoolers have to kill their monster teacher before the end of the school year lest he destroys Earth. And also (I haven’t read the manga but I watched the anime and loved it) Inuyashiki. It’s about an old guy that gets turned into a robot. He wants to make the world a better place. Very intense and kind of violent at times but such a great story.
Death note, my hero academia and orange all great... But! Have you read ANY Naoki Urasawa? I urge you to get Monster. Viz compiled the entire series into 9 volumes and it is a masterpiece. It's dark, psychological, tense, gripping... And if you end up falling in love with his work (whick you will), there's also 20th century boys and pluto for you to check out down the road. I hope to see your thoughts on Monster on your next manga haul. Keep up the great work!
What about the graphic novel series, 'SAGA' ? It's a sci-fi series published through image comics.(yes, the same company that created "The Walking Dead.") The characters are very well developed and so comfortable in this crazy world. The artwork is so beautiful (by Fiona Staples. She's responsible for the recent rendition of the Archie Comics that inspired the tv show Riverdale.) Plus, SAGA addresses current issues (grief. Racial prejudice, War, LGBTQ+ issues, addiction.) I highly recomended reading the Volumes, where they compile 5 chapters (issues) at a time. I gobbled them up like a Thanksgiving meal. You'll love them, Jesse.
you should try Oyasumi Punpun, Berserk if you're into dark stuff. Also Food Wars! if you're into culinary stuff or even if you're not. Haikyuu!! and Slam Dunk if you're into sports and BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad if you're into music
You should read the 'Three Thieves' series by Scott Chantler. It's a series of graphic novels about an orphan girl searching for her twin brother with her two friends Topper and Fisk. It's really great, the artwork and story are fantastic!
I would definitely recommend 'Lumberjanes' and 'Papergirls' Loving both of these series! Can't wait to check out some of your recommendations here, I've been on the fence about Graveyard Shakes now I think I'll go ahead and check it out.
You like Superheroes? Take a look at the MARVEL and DC comic books, which are essentially graphic novels but shorter, and collections are classified as graphic novels. I recommend Young Avengers with every fibre of my being. Billy Kaplan is my favourite comic book character of all time.
I would recommend the manga (Taiwanese, but still) 1/2 Prince. It about a girl who joins a VR game, but to prove to her brother that she is actually good at games and isn't just relying on help from other, male gamers, she ends up joining and pretending to be a guy. It's a really interesting, funny and exciting gaming series that doesn't fall into the normal troupes (i.e. people being stuck in the game, dying irl if they die in the game, etc.). Also, the art is gorgeous.
I have been in a 2 YEAR reading slump and I was wondering what books I should read. PS I found you're channel on my recommendations and I'm loving it. Please keep creating videos FOREVER!!!!! Thank you :)
I recommend: - Handa-Kun - Royal Tutor - Black Butler - Karneval - Cells at Work! They all have an anime version and I think they're great. But reading the manga is just a lot different. So either way, you can watch or read them 😊
Jesse since you said in one ig story that you like black clover i would definitely recommend reading the manga "Yona of the Dawn" not only for the story-line (it's about a princess who looses everything and then sets in on a journey with her bodyguard best friend (only 2 years of age difference lol) to find people who can help her grow stronger and gain her kingdom back) AND THE HUMOR omg i guarantee that you will have a very nice laugh during your read if you decide to check it out.
Yesssss! I love book recommedations!! I've been looking for some good graphic novels, and my reading lists usually are made of recommendations from this channel 💙💙
If you are a fan of good character development and Asian aesthetics, you will love Yona of the Dawn, it has some of the best writing I’ve seen in recent years. I will also recommend Bungou Stray Dogs till the day that I die because it is home to some of my all time favourite characters (The anime is also definitely worth a watch). And as for graphic novels I recently picked up The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and absolutely loved it, there’s only one volume out at the moment but I heard Netflix is making it a series.
If you've already read Orange, you should read its mangaka's other manga: Dreamin'Sun. It's so good, cute and fluffy. The characters are absolutely delightful and fun. I loved it so much. It's perfect for someone who loves romance and who loves to read an enjoyable read.
Monster, Monster, Monster... i just had to recommand this as well! one of the best dark psychological manga i've ever read (there's an anime as well so if u wanna get the vibe before diving into it), this is a manga i'm not afraid to say is a masterpiece.
I keep hearing such great things about Orange, I might just have to pick it up. Thank you for the recommendations! Graphic novels and mangas currently serve as the books I turn to when I'm in a slump with regular novels, but I'd like to make them a regular part of my diet. Not that I eat books...I DEVOUR them! :D
Manga - Attack on Titan Graphic Novels: My Favourite Thing is Monsters (This! The art is amazing, the story is so deep and well written and the messages are very interesting. It is one of those stories that the more you think about it, the more you find.) and Strong Female Protagonist (you can read this online, it is a webcomic but there are only physical copies of the graphic novel)
Though it's only three volumes long, you should read "Cafe Kichijouji de". It follows five men who work at a cafe and the rather unlucky boss who has to contend with the strange daily situations his staff bring upon themselves and the cafe. Much like one of the manga you recommended, each chapter is its own little story, and between them are textless chibi-fied stories as well. The manga is comedic, ridiculous, and adorable, and I fell in love with the characters in no time flat. I wish the author hadn't fallen out of love with the story after volume one (though I'm thankful two more volumes were created for the fans anyway) because I could read tales of these five cafe workers forever.
One of my favorite manga has to be Otomen by Aya Kanno. I'm not much for romantic comedies, which is what it is, but it has a lot of heart and, personally, I feel it has a good message about gender roles.
I highly recommend you to read Inio Asano's mangas. In all of his mangas he shows the beauty that is present in ordinary moments in life as well as common struggles all of us go through. "Solanin" is the perfect read when you feel lost in life. Pd: Sorry for my english, is not my first language.
I recommend the comic series W.I.T.C.H., Yen Press, SkyDoll, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Legend of Korra. And as for manga series: The Ancient Magus Bride, Laid-Back Camp, Food Wars, Land of the Lustrous, Naruto, and...okay, there's a whole list that I'm not going to go through.
Thank you Jesse for showing me how good manga and graphic novels are. My first manga was Orange...once again thanks to you :) and I loved it. I went on to read A silent voice, Wolf children and Nausicaa. Really appreciate these videos. ❤
If you enjoy short manga, and Death Note and Bakuman (both are amazing!) there is this manga called Genkaku Picasso. It's about basically about this boy people have nicknamed Picasso for his love of art and drawing, but he has trouble connecting with people. It's fun, it's dark, it's high school setting and all the problems he encounters are really different and it's nice to see the symbolic meaning of the problem and try to guess how it's gonna go down. Genkaku Picasso is already completed and has only 3 volumes so it's not even a big investment. If that sounds even slight bit interesting, be sure to check it out!
I want to meet you and talk about books!! like all day long!! you are such a reading inspiration. great quality+great topics+great personality=jessethereader!!! devoted fan here!!
Definitely checking out the ones I haven't read. Ngl, my heart skipped at your MHA rec. ALSO!!! If you like Bakuman, you'd probably really like the anime Shirobako. It's about creating an anime. It's really cool. :D
If I could recommend a manga, may I suggest Bungo Stray Dogs? Its about a detective agency who are literary characters like Hawthorne and Huck Finn and fight mafias. Another manga series I can suggest are Tegami Bachi and Wolf's Rain. All three have really good anime adaptions too with really compelling storylines. ☺
WOW!!! i was watching your old graphic novel recommendations videos and i was thinking or requesting another video about it in the new video you upload but wow it is as if you read my mind!!!!
Fun fact i dunno if u know this already, Death note and Bakuman were creacted by the same 2 guys! actually Bakuman is about the journey of the 2 creators ultimatly making Death note, it's basically the biography of Obata Takeshi and Tsugumi Ohba
Out of the 100+ manga series I've read, my favorite is "The Summit of the Gods" by Jiro Taniguchi. It's based on a novel by Baku Yumemakura. I highly recommend it, if you like mature and realistic manga.
I just read Sheets as an ebook from Edelweiss and it was such a cute read! I recommend watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood if you haven't already as I am obsessed with it right now! I haven't gotten around to the manga myself yet but I can only imagine that it's great
I love this webcomic called HOOKY, it's on webtoon and it's really good! It's about witches and princesses and princes and politics and it's really really amazing
I really enjoyed the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl graphic novels, she is a very entertaining character with relatable quirks, as well as the Spill Zone series by Scott Westerfeld (can you tell he’s my favorite author 😝)
If you want a really heartwarming magna read A Polar Bear in Love by Koromo. You should check it out! Also, Scott Pilgrim only gets better from volume one.

Hanya Mostafa you see......it’s simply one HELL of a manga
