- #Laos cuisine is a somewhat of a black box to foreigners, especially Westerners, myself included. But, if you know #Thai food (specifically the food of Isaan), then you probably know more than you think about #Lao #food. In this video, we're doing a proper #foodtour of #Vientiane, capital of this mysterious country. Pork laap and raw duck blood are on the menu. Let's check it out.
Don't forget to watch in 4K!
Thanks for watching! Cheers, Nick :)

Welcome to lao 🇱🇦❤️🇯🇵
The way you ate those Larbs, wow! You are Lao to the core! As a Lao person I can’t even eat those peppers like you did. And that duck blood larb, I hardly see “farang” eat it, you are the first farang I see who tried it. Thank you for trying and loving Lao foods. By the way, we usually don’t mix jeow or hot sauce with Larb, we eat it separately with sticky rice. If you mix jeow with Larb it will just add more salty and sour taste to the Larb which is already salty/sour. But hey I see you love it so nothing wrong with that.
Check out Mark Wien Raw duck blood @Anna Grilled DUCK!
That mixed the duck blood with some water and some salt. You Gotta know how to parts all those ingredients to get it turn into gelatin. All the meats in there are all from the ducks . They usually eat as appetizer or something with liquor and beer. This is one of Lao dish that I don’t eat.
Love the food! Looks so delish. Worth booking a ticket to Lao just to eat some of that. Always think your food commentry is the best.
Isan people are Laotian by ethic and they speak same language and eat same kind of food.
Correct
Kudos to you. This is by far my favorite dish of laotian culture. Can never get enough of it. Love that you are embracing and enjoying different cultures
You are very brave for eating raw duck blood, I used to eat it when I was in Lao, but now I’m afraid to eat it. Good video.
When eating Lao food it all about the fingers when you can. Duck's blood is one of my favorites. Have been out when I was the only white guy with a restaurant of Lao food. My wife is Lao and she says the is no such word as Laotian. I think we Americans made it up. It's Lao country , Lao language and Lao people. Your history was spot on a thing many miss.
Every time I eat larb, always have to have it's pairing soup. I love your contents!
Great episode again, Thanks for sharing the negotiation with the took took , seeing how that's done was helpful for somebody that would struggle
yummy! i like the lap *very nice *
Got to learn how to hustle like you 50,000 Kip dang!! Congradulations! You da the man!!
Most important word in the English language: No. lol
@@travelfareatlocal Thank you i'll be in Vientiane next week. even as a native speaker I still get hustled by the drivers. thanks for the advice!
That's a good shit bro... I eat duck blood on a special day or on a large gathering. Have a fun and safe trip! From Cali 🇺🇸
For the Laos dipping sauce say it like your saying jail in English. Come on got to use your hands to eat sticky rice 😂
Lao larb has a lot of herbs and ingredients..very good 👍🙂🙂
Esan people is actually laos who migrate to thailand.
True
You are the best here to out eat Laap in Vientian Laos
Just to help you out with your pronunciation...
Jeow (the dipping sauce) = gel but with a very faint 'w' sound at the end. So, gelw.
The duck blood dish you ate has cooked duck meat at the bottom of the dish (not buffalo). I'm not sure what they call it at that restaurant but it sounds like you're saying pang phet? It's also comonly known as laap phet also. You know what laap is and phet is duck. Phet is pronounced with a pb sound where the ph is. Pbhet.
Pet = spicy
Pang = expensive or precious (depending on how you use it)
Also, Lao people always eat sticky rice with our hands. We never put it on a spoon. We typically will lightly kneed a little bit into a ball (if you're dipping) or in a little bowl is you're trying to pick something up with the rice. If you don't want to pick up the food (for example, laap) with your rice, you can use a spoon for the laap then take the sticky rice with your hands and chase the laap with it. Obviously you can eat it the way you want but as a Lao person, I cringe when I see people use a spoon for sticky rice lol. It's such a staple in our diet so for me, I like to see it being eaten the way we would eat it 😎
Also to help you further with your Lao (if you're still in country):
Moo = pork
Pba (that pb sound again) = fish
Gai = chicken
Kuai (this one is hard to spell out phonetically since it's a mixture of odd sounds, think Hawaii but with a k and without the "ee" sound at the end) = buffalo
Seen = meat. Used to refer to food and not the animal. So you can say seen moo to mean pork. Seen pa to mean fish meat and so forth.
You're doing well with the sabaidee and kop chai. It goes a long way. 🤝
good video, like it
So yummy food
Welcome to laos 👍
That’s awesome. Beerlaab 😂
LARB and BEER go super well together
As a Laotian, it’s pains me to see him eating the dish this way but I absolutely understand because he may not know the proper way the Lao people eats
Wow my favourite foods yummy 😋😋😋
it's a national dish in LAOS...
Just stumbled on to your channel and it very addictive man. Happy eaten my friend.
Thanks for being here!
You suppose to eat the sticky rice and laab with your hand mate lol. But I love your vedio ❤❤❤
Gotta get down with your hands and make the sticky rice the utensils 😂😂
Wow I can't believe you eat raw duck blood laap 😋
Kudos for trying the ແປງເປັດ duck blood dish. Even many locals don’t dare to eat that. lol. But people do order it when drinking with friends.
Welcome to lao 🥰🇱🇦
Da reason issan n lao are identical is kuz issan are ethnically Lao ppl, majority of Thai dishes originated from Laos.
I like the way you eat :)-
I like how u said Esan and Laos use to be the same Country and didn't say Esan use to be part of Laos so there won't be any drama in the comments.
It’s amazing, you know how we eat now, generally once we cook larb in a big portion, we will mix up with a bunch of cut chilis, and if you want more spicy, you can add by eating a piece of chili once you bite. But you know how to bargain Tuk Tuk or Jumble, hahaha
Love the raw duck blood...it's never taste like blood bc with all the fresh herbs it's very refreshing taste.
They also eat raw duck blood in northern Viet Nam too.
Add ( Addicted to Viet Nam) channel and ask Jordan, he is from UK.
Larb, is originally from laos 🇱🇦 is a lao dishes.
The light brown or reddish leaves called puck Sa Maeck puck means vegetable Sa maeck is just the name of that vegetables. It has a little tart Ness in a bit sour
I use the sticky rice (kow niao) as my spoon. I don’t usually use silverware in Isaan or Laos.

Good eat
Wow I never see foreigners ate duck blood you’re the first person who’s can eat you can find a Laos wife ❤❤
Brother, you supposed to eat that straight up. and zip it down with a beer Lao. If you going to eat with sticky rice I recommend you order a cook version of lard duck only with out blood. It’s also good.
By away the duck meat in the blood it’s already cook. They just pour blood on top.
This dish is good for drinking, it has cooked duck meat and organ meat, only raw blood thin down with water and some fish source with loads of herbs 🌿
It true .insane and Lao are Sam people ❤🎉🎉
Actually, the Raw duck blood restuarant maybe is open at night i think haha
Yummy😋😋THAT ALL LAOS'S FOODS NOT THAI'S FOODS Okay!! It drive me nut when people said Laos's is Thai food.
ສະບາຍດີ
Haha funny how you haggle over the ride. You can tell they didn't make much profit that's why the first guy hand you over to the other driver.
Laab is originally from laos and spread to neighboring countries.
I don't remember larb moo looking like that. I prefer ribeyes, grilled, thin sliced, liver, tongue, intestine larb with all the fixes. But I guess it's for people didn't grow up eating it. Oh yeah, them tuktuk, they're all the same anywhere around the world. It's foreigners tour price. Lol
Beer above freezing???
What camera did you use for your content?
Sony a7iv
The blood is raw, but the duck meat is fully cooked or grilled. I hope someone in the restaurant speaks English or at least having English in the menu.
Those red leaves are called samik.
They’re great
@@travelfareatlocal Keep up the great work!
Just to let you know next time you eat larb with sticky rice don't use spoon to eat. Use your hand and learn how to eat like Thai people eat. You watch how they eat when eat sticky rice with larb.
No man, dont eat your sticky rice with a spoon 😂
Why you eat sticky rice with a spoon?
I think those are cashew leaves. Same as in Thailamd.
What the name of is restaurant? Ana Grill Duck restaurant? Please and Thank you.
Yes
squeeze the sticky rice in to a ball
Isn’t fear to our like American people ❤
How much is cost for your Larb?
I honestly don’t remember
The duck blood is raw but the duck meats are cooked.
ຮາຮາ
U have to read back the history of Laos or Lanexang (Land of million elephants) U will know the root Esan now they forgot their root and I believe the Lao people they don’t really care for Esan neither. Lao people they happy for what they are.
Please use your hands when eating sticky rice
Eat sticky rice with your hands not utensils
# this is vietnamese cuisine but laos 🇱🇦 adopted it . so yea
i doubt that ! pho yes, larb is All Lao..
Not just Pho but many of other Vietnamese dishes were stole by Lao. Banh mi(Khao jee pâté) Chả lụa(moo yaw) Nem chua(som moo) Banh canh(khao piak sen) Goi cuon(fresh spring rolls) Cha gio( fried spring rolls) Banh cuon (Vietnamese steamed rice rolls)Banh xeo(Vietnamese sizzling pancake) the list goes on..any Vietnamese dishes made by Lao, Lao call their own. Even blood pudding/soup(Vietnamese Tiet canh).
Neighbors learn from one another so sharing is the word and not stealing
where is the adress please?
Anna duck restaurant, Vientiane
@@travelfareatlocal the first one please, im here now
Ok listen isaan is kon Lao that’s why their food is similar, there’s no such thing as isaan food. The food is the same it’s the people that change!
The limes are squeezed on your spoon for each bite cuz the acid from the limes will make the blood runny, each bite is followed by Chilli dipped in the shrimp paste is the chaser. You don’t eat that dish with rice that dish is made for people who drink
Next time just use your fingers for sticky rice and don't ever use sauce for larb smh
This just doesn't make any sense. You got some much views on this vlog. Subscribers?? Hmm,
Wrong way to eat sticky rice and there alot of scamming and robbery in Laos and Thailand just fyi
Wow you can eat a very spicy laap
Your ancestor and our did eat it raw back then
