Love how you just get on with the information; no music, stupid graphics, teaser clips and most importantly you don’t start with “What up Friends!” I’ve learned so much from you in just a few videos so far. Thank you!
The one thing I would like added to Apple Maps is improvement on the add a stop functionality. I like googles version where you can customize your own route by adding various stops by location. Apple only allows you to add stops that are specific to businesses or services. Hopefully that is an improvement in iOS 16.
Call them waypoints, custom routes, midpoints, stops, secondary destinations or other reference, the function of adding these to a route outside of those in the narrow pre defined categories along the narrow path of the selected route should be doable by Apple. Maybe call them iStops. Heck, I'll keep 100GB of open space on my phone to devote to this function. BTW - thanks a bunch for pointing out how to better use the tools I already have access to!
agreed. I use carplay, and it doesn’t let you add a stop on your phone when you’re plugged in, instead having to use the sluggish car touch screen. personally what i like to do is use desktop google maps to plan my routes, stops, gas stations etc. and create a guide “playlist” on Apple Maps to navigate with. works for me now but can be seamless and done all within apple maps if they improved.
This seems like a no brainier for Apple. I soo want to use Apple Maps but when I need multiple stops that aren’t necessarily the fastest or straightest route to my final destination. Apple Maps says I can’t help ya Bruh 🤦♂️
For those who don’t have CarPlay or don’t have wireless CarPlay and don’t want to plug in, the parked car pin also drops if you car has Bluetooth and the Bluetooth connection type is set to car stereo. When the Bluetooth disconnects from the car (ie you shut off the car), Apple Maps drops a pin. Great video! Great to see that Apple is taking their map app seriously!
Bravo for mentioning What3Words! I can't wait until this is fully integrated into Apple Maps (or Google Maps). It would be fabulous to be able to send your exact location in a stadium to friends who are trying to find you (not just folks who happen to have W3W on their phone). Or direct people to your exact campsite. And one thing that I like about Maps vs Google Maps is that Maps marks stop signs and traffic lights on your route, so you can see at a glance that you need to make a left turn at the next light.
Something I started doing recently, using Maps with Notes. When you look up a location in Maps, you can share that location to Notes. After you click Share, and select Notes, you can then select which note you want to share it to. Once you select a note, a Maps link appears in your note. Now, when you' re in Notes, if you click on that link, it will open Maps and go right to that location for you. Just another way Apple has improved their ecosystem.
If you do the same in Google maps you can actually save the whole route in Notes. Handy if you have destinations that you only sometimes visit from home now and again.
I swapped to iPhone for the very first time in November. I decided that I would sorta immerse myself in all of the apple apps. I use Maps for about 95% of my navigation and it does pretty well. I have a few gripes, especially with it saying to keep left on a highway when in reality it is just an exit and that the command was unnecessary or that it doesn't say to turn at some spots that should be pointed out as turns even though the road sorta carries on in the direction it is going but it was at an intersection. My favorite thing of maps is being able to visually see stop signs/traffic lights as well as (in certain circumstances) the view changes to a lane centered view where it actually points out the lane you should be. I have only seen this feature happen once along one of my routes, but I hope that comes to more areas that have a lot of lane changes.
After Apple updated the maps in the recent update and added the 3D view, improved location details, enhanced directions (where it shows exact detail on directions if you are in a supported city, and the VR walk help feature I instantly fell in love with Apple Maps again. I used to like it before but would sometimes switch to waze for driving but I deleted it and not gone back after this updated. Cheers!
I live in Toronto and i drive to about 6 to 8 locations everyday-I much prefer Waze here -It gives Traffic /Police locations/speed cameras/Accidents/red light cameras/time in traffic backups and keeps a history/you can report incidents also
3:53. When the map spins around (3D view) you don’t get to learn the area, you become dependent on the map. When the map stays “north up” you can learn the relation of places and navigate more easily - especially for repeat journeys.
This was a great video. I learned so much. About 6 months ago I gave Apple Maps another chance and do not regret it. The app has upgraded so much lately and its the map I use daily now.
Thank you for your awesome discussion on Apple Maps. I always learn something from your channel when I watch. I really like the Apple Maps user experience. I also like the way it is starting to have some Waze like responses. I really prefer to use the Apple based apps because the user gets full iOS integration benefits. However, Waze has some great dynamic informational abilities that Apple Maps is starting to provide. I hope Apple Maps continues to gain a user preference over other driver map app options!
Some great tips there. Have recently retried maps to get to a local location in an area I don't go to regularly. Maps didn't like the route I drove to as it hadn't been updated with the rail crossing removal completed 2 months ago. It tried to get me to cross the railway where there is no crossing. Google Maps had already been updated with the new underpass. Being in Perth, Western Australia the look around function doesn't work in my area where streetview does. I will continue to try Maps every so often as there are functions of Google Maps I don't really like.
I was an Android user since the beginning of time. I got my first iPhone 3 days ago because I wanted to learn something new. I'm 72 and hooked. Thank you for the nice maps video, consider me subscribed.
I use a Reminders feature that lets me know when I’m near a point of interest. It is integrated with Maps. I love discovering and marking new restaurants and POIs in places I plan to go in the future. For example I use it to let me know when I’m near or approaching a restaurant I am interested in trying while driving or walking in a new city. It’s been great. Do you know if that feature is in Maps to tag a place and a radius so that I get an alert in Maps?
I would love to see the add to route option get expanded. I have to plan a few routes and use my calendar to be my work around for this. As long as I have an address in my calendar I can open maps and Siri will show them as suggestions.
The only improvement I need to use Apple Maps exclusively would be the ability to download offline maps. Enjoyed the video, very informative and to the point, and you brits are very pleasant to listen to ( I'm an American, but set my Siri voice to British for that reason lol )
Thanks great tips. Id like to know how you can disable all the restaurants etc cards as I find they get in the way of what I'm trying to find...any tips on that
I have a very basic problem using Apple Maps as a pedestrian. Which direction do I take when I leave a tube station etc. On Google Maps I can orientate the map and it shows which direction I’m walking with an arrow. I often start trying to use Apple Maps and give up, once I’ve wasted 5 mins trying to orientate myself, and pick up with Google Maps.
Can I and if so how do I get the speed I am doing when driving on the screen in maps… google maps has it on android, now that I have moved back to iPhone after 13 years I cannot find this function, is there one…Your presentations are all so wonderful and helpful… Albury in the state of NSW Australia
Sadly, this isn't a function of Maps. I hope it comes in a future update - I know that the device knows your speed - for example, if I'm slightly over the speed limit before approaching a speed camera, Siri will warn me and say "30 mph speed camera approaching, please watch your speed" - whereas if I'm at or under the limit, it will simply say something like " 30mph speed camera approaching". So the data is there already, it's just a case of Apple displaying it.
Thanks for your tips and excellent presentation style. I do have one problem with Apple Maps... hopefully just something I'm doing wrong that you can help me with. I prefer to use Maps in horizonal orientation on my magnetic car holder. When I initially rotate from vertical to horizontal, all is well, BUT when Maps puts the screen to sleep then wakes back up, it's ALWAYS back in vertical orientation, not horizontal. I sometimes revert to Google Maps when travelling just because of this annoyance. Any advice on how to get Apple Maps to "stay" in horizontal orientation when it wakes up (such as before an exit) would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi, in the past, you used to be able to have Apple maps give you a voice preview of your next set of directions by tapping the upper screen as in “At the next set lights, turn left”. As far as I know you can no longer do this. I loved that feature at times when Siri hasn’t talked in a long time. Is there a way that you know how I can get next turn directions to sound while driving? Thanks.
The parked feature also works as long as you’re iPhone is connected to Bluetooth in your car. My car is an older car and it doesn’t have CarPlay or native Bluetooth. I connected a Bluetooth dongle and in the settings on the iPhone I specified that this dongle is for a car stereo. So, now the iPhone knows that every time it disconnects from that Bluetooth it has to bookmark your parking location. Alternatively, you can just tell Siri to mark your parking location.
Good afternoon. I have watched your maps tutorial and decided it was worth a try again. I have deleted it again after4 weeks of excessive mileage and getting lost via the map, it couldn't find Heathrow Terminal 2 without taking me on the scenic route not the M25🤷🏻♂️. Yesterday was the final straw for apple maps it took mean extra 60 miles to get to my destination. Sorry but not for me I'm back with Waze. I love the channel and your tutorials having learnt a lot for my apple kit.
Is there a way to create a route and save it for later that you know of? For example a route from work to home via specific stops? I can't seem to share a ceated route, like you can in google maps.
Hey... I like your videos, thank you for taking the time to do the professional presentation. I have one question: If I am using Apple maps when driving, it provides turn-by-turn directions on Apple Watch. How to stop that on Apple Watch?
I was very impressed with the detail in Maps recently. I was in Germany and doing a circular walk of about 6 miles. Although I had a large scale map aimed at cyclists and walkers I realised it was not showing all the junctions of paths and tracks that I was coming across. I eventually got my phone out to double check my location and decided to put the village I was aiming for as a destination. Apple Maps apparently had far more information than the cartographer of my paper map and guided me on small paths between fields, then once in the woods, was able to help me distinguish between forest tracks that did and did not appear on my own map. I wouldn’t want to rely on it for a walk in the hills, but I was surprised how much non-road information was there.
I’ve had similar experiences in my very suburban hometown. There’s a lot of paths and trails but unless you lived in those particular neighborhoods or were an avid runner or cyclist, you probably wouldn’t know that. Virtually none of them had names, and many connected to specific neighborhoods, some gated, but Maps knew a lot of them.
I’m a driver for a delivery company in Devon,UK. I lot of villages here will be spread over a square mile , have no street names and all the houses have names rather than numbers. The postcode you enter into maps will get you to the centre of the postcode area. When you enter the postcode into maps instead of pressing go if you scroll down most of the houses names associated with that postcode are listed. Select the name you want and it’ll take you to the specific house. Not all house names are on there but the majority are.
@@ProperHonestTech works everywhere. Another tip for you. If your trying to navigate to a numbered house on a street, type the street address and house number in apple maps, and it will take you right outside that number. I.E 66 high street Sidmouth.
Thanks for this review. I have avoided apple maps since it directed me to a corn field instead of a school a few years ago. I guess it's time to give it another try.
In a nearby city, Apple Maps always makes a route through a street which has been cut off in the middle. Apple is very slow to fix this. It would be nice to be able to add your own "no go" zones in the app to help overcome this kind of routing errors.
Where did you get that mount/stand for your laptop if you’re willing to share that, please? This was one of the most useful videos I’ve ever seen on UA-cam.
Hi Thank you for the video. Is there language setting as in the case of google maps? My phone language is English but I want to listen to directions indifferent language.
Thank you for the 9 Tipps! Some of them, I have already used and appreciate them. What I really like would be an area of the Map, hat can be downloaded to use it abroad or somewhere, where the internet-access ist not so good. Google Maps offers this opportunity. Is there an option to use this functionality in Apple-cards as well. Thank you for your answer!😊
Phenomenal video! Thank you so much for sharing these tips. As a new convert from Google Maps this is by far THE BEST video I've seen on Apple Maps tips.
I used to use google maps all the time, mainly because in the early days Apple maps wasn’t that great. Now I’m going to give Apple maps another try. What you didn’t mention and I use a lot on my pioneer satnav in the motorhome is way points. Setting waypoints are really useful when one wants to go along a specific route route.
The only feature I miss is active gps like waze when your not going to a set location. I like crowd sourced alerts all the time. When navigating I use Apple maps, Waze is the best commuting app. It’s nice to be notified about traffic hazards , police , etc.
You are GREAT!!! I have listened to many of your videos. You also have a great voice. I need you because my tech gene was absent when I was born...which was a long time ago. Thanks!
I used to be a strong Google Maps user but been using Apple Map since. One feature that I miss is the ability to place flags and labels on the map. I understand Apple’s decision to not make the map cluttered - but I love to have all these pins down and visualize where everything is to plan my route. Perhaps a button to toggle pins and labels on/off?
There's another handy What3Words tip. Three meter squares are small enough that several are likely to get someone to your location. Walk around and pick the one that's easily remembered or special.
I’ve noticed Apple Maps was getting more robust. I love some of the new features, such as using an Apple Watch to tap you when turns are coming up. I’d probably switch from Google Maps if not for one thing. Not all of my contacts have iOS devices, so I’m stuck for the time being sharing with links to Google Maps. Great info. I’ve subscribed.
yeah the watch haptic is great for someone such as myself who can get too wrapped up in auto pilot driving and forget Im actually going somewhere Ive not been before
We just returned from a trip to London and Ireland. We used guides to plan and carry out the trip. It was awesome to use the built in data, but also to plan our own guides and leverage the built in pieces when needed. We will definitely do that again. The expansion and future collaborative abilities will be welcomed! Regarding the add a stop, it doesn’t seem to work within CarPlay at least we haven’t found it once connected to the vehicles. That’s unfortunate.
Does anyone know if Apple maps can show alternative routes while already on a chosen route? Google does and I love the option of seeing another route with an eta if I just feel like going a different way sometimes while already en route
Been using Waze for YEARS straight off my iPhone, but last year was given a company car that has CarPlay in it. Waze is so glitchy, sometimes just makes whole screen go black, and I have to restart the phone to get it working. Also the voice search function doesn’t work. I’ve shied away from Apple Maps due to not knowing if it will pick me a faster route if there’s traffic (like Waze does). I think I’m gonna trial Apple maps for a month (off this video) and see if it’s worth switching
Thank You. Is there a way to turn off the suggestion every time I plug in car play it offers a option to go somewhere it thinks I am going I would prefer it just show the map of where I am
I can't say with certainty, but I don't think so, and that's honestly more down to widgets in iOS still being a bit useless, in my opinion. The maps widget isn't real time, it refreshes every now and then, (sometimes only when you click on it), so the location is often not all that accurate in the widget. It's honestly more like a massive Maps button, as you can only really do anything with it once you've tapped into it.
The add stops feature is great but also incredibly frustrating. MOST of the time I want to look for something specific along my route and not the few choices displayed. That is one reason I prefer google maps.
Is there a way to create a ‘Trip Plan’? I.e plan a 2 week trip that has multiple destinations and trips within it, e.g Day 1 from A to B and sites along the way, then Day 2 etc etc?
I noticed on a recent road trip that I get a pop-up window for a speed check notification but I don't see where the speed check is? There seems to be no symbol on the map? Is there setting or was this removed? I wanna know where the speed check (police car) is??? Help!
Great tips. But as a VERY occasional Maps user, I must say - how typical Apple to make the app more complex than most users will e er need. It would be nice to have an expert/average/novice toggle on apps like this.
The pin with the location of your parked car is not only when connected to CarPlay. It even works when the iPhone was connected via bluetooth or USB with the car.
One other neat trick you can do with Maps (and Google Maps) if you own a Tesla. You can find an address on maps, drop a pin and share it with the Tesla app. Then when you hop in your car the destination is already set on Tesla's inbuilt map. Don't know if this works for other vehicles.
Some good tips. Not a lot I wasn't aware of, but always happy to learn more. I have an iPhone 12 pro and did not see some of the same things in your screen shots. Also, I looked at some major cities and never saw the "look around" feature pop up. Thanks for the video!
worth noting that speed camera alert (audible) will only work when you have an active route in navigation. If you are just driving on a route you know and havent set an actual destination even with the app open and the arrow moving through the maps it wont audibly alert you to a speed camera. I know this at a cost of 3 points on my licence. driving by this speed camera now and hearing siri telling me (speed camera ahead please watch your speed) grinds my gears like you will never know!
Hi I am wondering why I do not have all the options that you talk about. Per example: I ha a iPhone XT with iOS 15,6 (French setting) but there are no extensions available on my phone. I could send you a screen capture if you want but for now I am just jealous that you have options Thant I do not have. How can I add them? Thank you Allen
I REALLY want to use Apple Maps more. The one single thing I often need, with Apple Maps can’t (but Google Maps does) is adding additional stops. for example I went to go pick up a friend who I often forget how to get to their house to pick up and then go to see a movie. Now I can do directions to their house and then I have to cancel and start a new one to go to the movie theater. But with Google maps I can set a directions to go to the movie theater and then add my friends house as a destination in between. I’ve already asked Apple several times through their feedback form each year for 5 years now.
If there's one thing I've learnt about Apple over the years, it's that they will implement new features when they want to, not when people ask for it (sadly). I agree with you, better routing options are something that should be easy to include, so can only hope that we get them in one of the next big iOS updates.
Thank you for your helpful video. Compared to Google maps I’m missing two important features. You cannot download maps on your phone. And especially in some parts of France the coverage of the mobile networks is bad. Secondly Apple Maps is not showing the speed limits as Google maps does
I had never heard of What3Words, but I have downloaded it, and what a great app it is. I live in the country, and I’ve always wondered what I would do if I had an accident out in the woods, where it would be almost impossible to describe my position if I needed help. Now I need to see if local law enforcement is using it. Thank you for that tip.
Another great application for what three words is to find someone in a crowded space, such as an arena. You may only have the address of the arena but what three words can put you within 3 m of who you’re looking for.
I use Sat Nav regularly, and have tried Apple Maps. It works just fine, except that compared to Waze it is missing speed limit alerts. Where I'm based (with average speed checks and cameras everywhere) that's essential, so for now I'm sticking with Waze for driving. Apple Maps is impressive for when I'm walking in an unfamiliar location though
This is very helpful. Sadly, barely half of the tips apply to my area/country. I’ve been waiting for Apple to catch up, but that’s probably going to happen in iOS25.
Which country are you in? I guess, the one positive is that if Apple are using these features as selling points for their phones, it's very much in their best interest to roll these features out as soon as possible.
@@ProperHonestTech I’m based in the Philippines. Apple has a big presence here. And I agree that the more these features are accessible/updated, it’ll be more attractive for people to move to iPhones. Subscribed! 🙂
Love how you just get on with the information; no music, stupid graphics, teaser clips and most importantly you don’t start with

I tried to use apple maps a couple of times, but it still feels incomplete when compared to google maps
Is there a way to create a route and save it for later that you know of? For example a route from work to home via specific stops? I can't seem to share a ceated route, like you can in google maps.
Hey... I like your videos, thank you for taking the time to do the professional presentation. I have one question:
If I am using Apple maps when driving, it provides turn-by-turn directions on Apple Watch. How to stop that on Apple Watch?
I wish Apple would add a speedometer feature similar to Waze
I can't seem to get this to work - you're definitely doing this in Apple Maps (not Google)?
Try ta2 8aa
@@kevindawson2228 That worked! Must be for postcodes that cover a large geographical area. Thanks for letting me know 👍🏻
@@ProperHonestTech works everywhere. Another tip for you. If your trying to navigate to a numbered house on a street, type the street address and house number in apple maps, and it will take you right outside that number. I.E 66 high street Sidmouth.
@@ProperHonestTechI wish I knew how to add house names that are not on Apple maps as I could add loads every week.
Is there a option to make the TRAFFIC colors thicker? (ie: Google Maps Traffic Thickness)
Thanks for this review. I have avoided apple maps since it directed me to a corn field instead of a school a few years ago. I guess it's time to give it another try.
How did you turn off dark mode?? I can’t seem to do that in my iPhone!!
Thank you! And you can find the laptop stand here - geni.us/3R55gC2
There are no bike routes yet for Vienna in Apple Maps. They are for google maps though, so I guess I will stick to them for now
That’s unfortunate, makes sense to stick with Google for the time being.
Hi Thank you for the video. Is there language setting as in the case of google maps? My phone language is English but I want to listen to directions indifferent language.
This is honestly making me consider switching from Google Maps to Apple Maps
I feel like a maps pro after watching this vid! Thank you!
Glad I could help!
2:22 I was able to add the Uber extension but, I also have Lyft so is there a reason there is no option to add that extension as well?
Omg i wish they had a community map correction functionality. There are so many issues in my local town that I would love to fix and get Kudo’s for!
The king 👑 of Apple videos ⚡️⚡️
Phenomenal video! Thank you so much for sharing these tips. As a new convert from Google Maps this is by far THE BEST video I've seen on Apple Maps tips.
These were some of the most helpful tips I’ve ever heard. I’ve had iPhones forever and didn’t know most of these. Thanks so much.
Thinking about visiting Big Cypress National Preserve. Tried to drop a pin. No pin option.
Thank you. Wish I had watched this before vacationing in Asheville.
Maps still doesn’t have north up when navigating and it’s so irritating I just can’t use it.
Great info. I’ve subscribed.
yeah the watch haptic is great for someone such as myself who can get too wrapped up in auto pilot driving and forget Im actually going somewhere Ive not been before
You are awesome, can’t believe how much more is available in maps if you know where to look. Thank you 🙏😊
We just returned from a trip to London and Ireland.
How can I use satellite view during navigation? As soon as I start route guidance it reverts to standard maps
Does anyone know if Apple maps can show alternative routes while already on a chosen route? Google does and I love the option of seeing another route with an eta if I just feel like going a different way sometimes while already en route
Fantastic, thank you.
As usual a flawless presentation.
Wow, thank you!
I love Apple Maps and just learned a lot🤩Thank you!
Fantastic video, I will put this to the test while driving to the airport in Orlando and trying to find a gas station near the airport
Does map widget uses a lot of battery if you let it in the Home Screen?
I can't say with certainty, but I don't think so, and that's honestly more down to widgets in iOS still being a bit useless, in my opinion. The maps widget isn't real time, it refreshes every now and then, (sometimes only when you click on it), so the location is often not all that accurate in the widget. It's honestly more like a massive Maps button, as you can only really do anything with it once you've tapped into it.
The add stops feature is great but also incredibly frustrating. MOST of the time I want to look for something specific along my route and not the few choices displayed. That is one reason I prefer google maps.
Where I live, a lot of places aren’t loaded and part of maps. I’ve added quite a few to maps. On G maps, everything is there already.
Help!
Why can’t I have Apple Music controls at the bottom? Insane it’s not yet implemented!
Great tips. But as a VERY occasional Maps user, I must say - how typical Apple to make the app more complex than most users will e er need. It would be nice to have an expert/average/novice toggle on apps like this.
Is there voice command so i can just listen to the direction?
The pin with the location of your parked car is not only when connected to CarPlay. It even works when the iPhone was connected via bluetooth or USB with the car.
Does maps show the location of speed cameras like Waze ?
One other neat trick you can do with Maps (and Google Maps) if you own a Tesla. You can find an address on maps, drop a pin and share it with the Tesla app. Then when you hop in your car the destination is already set on Tesla's inbuilt map. Don't know if this works for other vehicles.
Some good tips. Not a lot I wasn't aware of, but always happy to learn more. I have an iPhone 12 pro and did not see some of the same things in your screen shots. Also, I looked at some major cities and never saw the "look around" feature pop up. Thanks for the video!
I like your videos because you act like an adult rather than a failed hip-hop artist.
Thanks, I didn’t know maps had the report it information, that’s exactly why I didn’t use it. I’ll have to try it out on my next venture.
Is there a way to see the speed limit on roads you’re driving on?
worth noting that speed camera alert (audible) will only work when you have an active route in navigation.
@proper honest tech
Would really love to know what kiind of rig/mount you are using for the MacBook and the camera tripod head
This guy makes such great videos and you actually learn so much. HIGHLY RECOMMEND ❤️⚡️🚀👊
I appreciate that!
On Iphone xr, yesterday we were driving and the apple maps app was giving me the highway exits too late. how to improve this?
Hi
I am wondering why I do not have all the options that you talk about. Per example: I ha a iPhone XT with iOS 15,6 (French setting) but there are no extensions available on my phone. I could send you a screen capture if you want but for now I am just jealous that you have options Thant I do not have. How can I add them?
Thank you
Allen
USEFUL TIPS. THANK YOU
I use Sat Nav regularly, and have tried Apple Maps.
Subscribed! 🙂
Yes the same situation here many of those features are not available in my country Puerto Rico
Apple Watch pins car parking locations. It’s very handy.
How to set maps direction to always go up to the top of the screen?
