have you noticed how the blade starts higher from the handle then drops to give it the belly, instead of starting from the handle asn sweeping up. That is the one thing I wish they did different, it would be better if it has and up sweep in the blade, or even a straight blade as the bushcraft black

  • @spider5001

I’m not a steel expert but what I’ve always heard is carbon is easier to sharpen and holds an edge longer. It is a trade off for not being corrosion resistant. It looks like they have solved it with that coating though. I seen a video of Canterbury saying the coating is impregnated into the steel. That is why you can still hit sparks off the spine that is coated. Stainless is a big deal where I live which is southeastern coastline of the US. Everything is salt or brackish and the humidity in the summer is usually 5 million percent in the summer. You can smell the salt in the air

Id love to see it in 3V , But I do love the ease of sharpening that 1095 has .. Either way , I'm glad they finally came out with the carbon steel version .

The great thing with the original sheath is that it doesn't interfere with your backpack - in contrast to kydex sheaths like yours... where the handle gets too high up. In a survival situation, you will probably have a backpack.

That darkened blade makes it look like the Bushcraft Black. Different handle, which is a shame..I love my Mora BB! Best budget bushcrafter ever imho. In fact, it is better than most of my more expensive blades.

BTW...The Mora Garberg Carbon basically looks like my Mora Bushcraft Black in a full tang version.
I purchased the Black for around $32 delivered, so I am happy with it, and not sure having an $85 Garberg is that important, since I have the Black already, and it will basically do everything the Garberg will do.

Msilverhammer Ditto. Plus the BCB has a far superior handle. Still waiting for someone to tell me they broke their partial tang Mora. It’s a lot of hooey but good on Mora for making what the “experts” think they need and setting their price point accordingly. All you guys can keep paying for full tang and keep Mora afloat for the rest of us that are happy to use their partial tang knives for a lifetime.

I own the Mora Garberg and can say it is a $100 knife that cost me $73. I put it up against my Skookum Bush Tool ($200 knife, most excellent). Very comparable.
I think it's awesome of Mora to be breaking out and doing higher end stuff. I can't wait to see what's next. I want to see micarta handle, ricasso-less blade, triangled scales and a real kydex sheath with retention strap.

I got a pocket sheath made for this as well, I also have a secondary custom Pathfinder Kydex sheath with a 6” Ferro Rod holder. The Mora Carbon has to be their best knife yet.
Me personally, I use Cold Steel pocket folders for stainless steel, mora carbon as my fixed blade. So I hav both stainless and carbon steel. If you’re going to carry two knives, makes sense to have two different steels.

I am a long time fan of your videos, and I appreciate this video. But please specifically tell my why this shouldn't be someone's primary knife? I have had the stainless model for a year and I love it. I suppose that someone might want a bigger knife--more power to them,if that is the case. But other than that, what features should a "primary" knife have? I pack a folding saw on my belt along with the Garberg and, in my view, that is a pretty awesome combination.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  6 років тому

I can only speak as myself. It's PLENTY good to be a primary knife. But I'm not PERSONALLY found to choose it over other things I personally have. I've grown exceedingly attached to my Fox River EXT-1 for instance.

I agree with what you published. It's also nice to see that there's very little real estate at the end of the point. Most companies will do a false edge one or two inches back towards the end of the knife. This knife does not therefore I believe it is stronger; much stronger. The 3.5 mm spine goes almost to the end of the point; just shy about 3 mm.

It's best to just use it and strop it in a hard flat surface with compound . I would recommend removing as little steel as possible . That grind thickness cannot lose much before becoming to abrupt or worse getting a blunt convex.
The 14C28N is very prone to convexing esp at the belly sweep. I will never own another stainless version again , something is off with that steel and blade...I cant quite figure it out but the carbon just works better sharpens better and feels like a different blade too me.?

I personally find the coating on that knife and the Bushcraft Black very pretty, but not very functional. My B.Black rusted a lot, but I live in a yearlong very humid area. Don't think that coating will efficiently protect against rust if you live in some place like NY or along the Atlantic coast, even if you take care of the thing, but for a dryer environment; I'd go carbon any day of the week.
    Nice video as always people.

Not sure but I would agree the coating is a laminate. That's the norm for European made knives as the process is done in France. Maybe some other locations too, from what I understand the Machining for that process is really expensive. Good review

My Bark River bush crafter came to me far, far, duller than my mora bushcraft black OR my essee RB3. So I can empathize with your first garberg experience. It was disappointing to say the least to spend over 200 dollars on a dull knife just because it says 3V on the side. I’ve learned that convenes are awesome on 2mm thick Japanese chefs knives, not so much on 1/8” outdoors knives. I had to put a secondary on, and actually thin the convex to get it to perform. Still love the knife, the handle and the sheath are excellent, and the steel is crazy tough.

    • @ssunfish
      @ssunfish 5 років тому

I think of sharpness on a scale. I believe the sharper a knife the cleaner n quicker the cut. I believe the sharper it is, the sooner you get dull. It makes sense with a edge holding steel to have a functional and lasting edge on it! You can get cheaper, easier sharpening knives too. They are like potato chips and tattoos. I don't know of anyone that stops at one.

Amazon says the coating is... "tungsten DLC anti-corrosive black coating"
Not sure I would pay over double the price of my Bushcraft Black just to get a full tang... I beat the crap out of my Mora and it has never failed me... If I finally break it... at least it was only $40 compared to the Garberg which is over $100... My Esse-6 cost about the same amount... I think the Garberg should be more in the $70 range... Still a nice knife though...

Just a question, how does weight factor into your decision on whether to carry a knife? I know typically with quality comes weight. Is there a knife that you feel is too heavy for belt carry but still worth carrying in a pack or some other alternate carry method? Also, how many carry methods do you use personally and how does weight factor into each method? I wear suspenders and plan on getting a pair made of leather with an intergral sheath for a small EDC utility type fixed blade. I constantly need a knife at work and want one easily accessable.

I'm one of the guys that think the Garberg is way overpriced. Over here (The Netherlands) the leather sheath version is more expensive then the multi mount and the carbon version is about 10 euro (12 usd) more expensive then the stainless one according to the sponsor of DBK.
I agree with Chris that the multi mount sheath is not good and you are likely to lose your knife in wet, mud or snow. There's only one velcro strap keeping the knife and sheath combo in the multi mount thing and velcro sucks when wet, in mud or in snow.
Of course the Garberg is not the first full tang knife Mora has made. They made truly full tang knives in the past being hunters knives. This is technically not full tang but a protruding stick tang.
The handles are made of two compounds (different materials) and they can come loose. The handles are not as strong as the handle of a 10 euro Hultafors GK. I also don't like to much the checkering for better grip on the handle. Sure they provide grip but are way more difficult to clean. No problem if you have enough water around you like a stream or a river, but a bitch when all you have is basically drinking water with you. But of course most reviews are done when you are close to the sink with warm water and soap.
If the price comes down to 50 euro for the leather sheath version I might be interested.

My own stupid opinion, but you add the term "bushcraft" to any knife or tool, and the price increases by a factor of at least 3x. I'm sure the Garbergs are great knives. Spines that can strike a spark (so can my Companion with a little bit of filing). And a larger, fuller tang that sticks out the back. What else? That full tang makes it worth 4x the price of my Companion HD? I know, I'm just being a babbling idiot. LOL And over a year late, too. :) I guess I need to go see if DBK does a Garberg vs Companion destruction test. lol

I completely disagree with ya Chris that soft rubber handle just gets to dinged up and nasty, these handles are freaking solid and take a beating. Besides we all know you have girly hands sitting in your basement always behind a computer "pretending to be an outdoorsman". Matter of fact this is probably not you ....all that money you made from Schrade they probably made a Chris Schrade Bot ....wait does your buddy even know ?? He doesn't know does he ! Wow that's just wrong😂😉
"Joke" don't block me LOL also a joke😉

The Garberg is heavier, less comfortable handle, worse sheath. Better steel if you get the stainless versions respectively. Full tang which probably doesn’t matter one bit.

OK...SO if you had to choose, would you rather have the new Mora Garberg Carbon, or the Mora Garberg KILLER, namely the Terava Jaakaripuukko?

Jaakaripuukko has a very grippy and comfy rubberized handle. I love my 140 model.

I have the jaakkaripukko 110 carbon steel. Like the look of mora but don't see the need for both, jaakkaripukko is better value I'd say

Sometimes I look at you and your toys and I think how much I hate you. Kidding. Just jealous. I live in the Pacific Northwest AKA a rainforest. The stainless is the way to go for me, but I'm probably going to have to get this one too. Great review!

  • @spoke1183

Way overpriced.... not entirely sure why people would need more then 2 knifes when hiking or camping. Medium or preferably large size knife will do all the work. What do u need small bush craft knife fore unless ur making a fucking figurine or a flute to play. Half the time u start a fire with bunch of branches and leafs off the ground anyhow. No reason to refine pieces of wood into feather sticks or small tinder sticks. And even if u had to in case of worse possible rainy day nothing that large knife cant handle lol. And a pocket knife can handle all the food processing.

Nobody is making buy a $300 knife. The differences are obvious. If those differences aren't important to you, then there's no need to buy one.
