- The Punch.ev is Tata's smallest electric SUV and it sits below the super popular Nexon EV. But Kartikeya was surprised at how impressive the Punch.ev has turned out (the good), the price jump from the ICE Punch (the bad) and as usual, some niggling finish issues (the ugly). On MotorInc First, here's everything you need to know about the new Tata Punch electric.
~
MotorInc First is a discussion between experts Kartikeya Singhee and Shumi (Shubhabrata Marmar), co-founders of MotorInc on new vehicles. Each episode will discuss one vehicle in great detail, covering the experience of driving or riding it, as well as what it means for the industry.

Hello! I don’t think I imagined it - but here’s the link to the image for you to decide for yourselves. Photoshop away!
drive.google.com/file/d/1W-aYFqgMO-bvOsbgGw1hU3FApCt1ieTs
Let us know what you find!
The logo's painted or printed on a degree or so to the left, you're not imagining it.
Well you do have OCD
The angle at which the photo is taken will impact the perspective. But at face value, it does look a little tilted to the left.
Really thanks for this pinned comment, it is tilted to me as well, I too don't know is it because you said it 😅
Tata be like "Tedha hai par mera hai"
Nobody is talking about it but got to praise the editor on MotorInc. Graphics look very readable and cool. Correct highlights in the correct places. Overall a job well done.
Passing it on! Thanks a ton for that!
Same comment. Awesome idea @motorinc
I agree, the graphics throughout the experience of the video are amazing!!! Kudos to the production team!!!
Kudos to that. Such a preety and neat job
Never thought I would get addicted to watch two professionals just speaking facts and about their real experience with cars and bike. I have been a fan of Kartikeya since the 2014 Honda City Review at Autocar India.
I would love to see both of you discuss about Motorsport especially Formula 1 as I feel there are no authentic shows and podcasts about the same in India. Hope this happens and that if it does, that it might be the start of something big!
Hey Uvan! We won't pretend to be experts on subjects we're at best amateur fans 😊
Ok
Its amazing how easy it is to watch 1 hour of your review and banter! Keep em coming
Glad you enjoy it!
great to see tata taking feedback and making great cars...hope to see them grow
Good cars get our vote!
Shumi's summary 10/10. Crisp audio, great detailing with b rolls and all those overlays. I like the jumbled way of topics! kinda keeps me interested (personally).
Thanks for your feedback! Glad to know it works!
Chassis:
Nexon was test for EV so it carried over with existing frame.
Tiago was test for mass market.
The new platform (used in Punch) would surely be under development when Nexon EV Max came out (it takes time to build, test and get approvals).
So it is less about they fixed mistake but more like "lets first see if people are buying it".
I heard this in one of the recent interview from senior Tata person.
Battery and Range:
For range, Tiago EV in general consumes 130Wh/Km and with EV understood driving this can be 110Wh/KM. It being 24kWh battery the range would be 184KM and 218KM respectively. (In winters it can further come down to 100Wh/KM (240KM) and we have achieved 85Wh/KM (282KM as well)).
So with 35kWh battery of Punch the numbers can 150Wh/KM, 125Wh/KM and 100Wh/KM mostly translating to 233KM, 280KM and 350KM.
Build:
I have Hexa and I still see the build issue in cars of that cost 😅
Maybe a move up from Hexa to Nexa is in order?
Gohil - 100pc agree
Thanks for crunching the numbers!
@@Naps56 Bought a 5yr old used (1L KM) Hexa just a year back. Not shifting anytime soon. The confidence this car gives while driving is something I don't get in Innova as well (not sure about the Hycross though).
@@motorinc Ha ha! Reading my comment again and now I feel I wrote a lot.

My Dad is a big fan of the RE Super Meteor 650 for the way it looks, showed your ThisConnect episode to him about it. At first, he saw the length of the episode and was a little hesitant to listen to the entire thing, but once he did listen to it he loved it, the amount of detail you guys presented about the vehicle itself and its experience is just mind blowing to him.
Awesome! And hello to your Dad from MotorInc HQ!
If you notice how Russian names are (Rusev, Miroslav etc. etc.), Punchev does sound Russian. This explains why the logo is tilted to the "left" 😂
Hahaha! Comrade Punchevski!
Puncher not punchev
@@danka1815 ?
love the way technically you guys explain and have conversation in studio. i have been following you guys from the very early years.. and this MotorInc has all together a different presentation.
Kudos to you guys
Thank you for being with us Sajjad!
Your content quality is very addictive. Kudos! I have been following and watching your reels and conv like this one. Pretty interesting way to present. Thanks for Standing out!
I listen to you guys when the work kinda gets mundane. And it is an absolute treat. And everytime I watch one of your videos again, I'll notice some more details about the vehicle that I missed the last time. Till now three of my friends/colleagues have bought the bikes I suggested to them, and they thank me everytime we meet. (We work remotely, so we meet like once every 2-4 months...).
Oh sweet! Thanks so much for letting us know!
Ohh !! It's raining videos on motorinc. Kudos to you folks on keeping up the high standards
Thanks a ton!
Driving for 15 +days now.. loving it no issues so far.. only first time when I recharged the vehicle, indicator sound and hazard lights sound just disappeared.. I had documents to pick at showroom just then.. the person spoke to some 'specialist' on phone and did 'force reset' not 'factory reset'.. it's all going fine since then which is about 12 days now.
I have the empowerment+ LR without sunroof (I had actually booked NR but instead took LR.. happy that I did).. without sunroof it feels and is roomy and comfortable otherwise I felt when is my head going to hit the roof when I test drove the vehicle with sunroof.. also just love the singleish peddle drive (city mode with regen level 2).. seats r comfortable but could have been better with more neck & upper back support..
Thanks for sharing you garage with us SS. Look forward to more updates.
Are you facing gear knob getting stuck issue?
@@karanjadhav4597 no.. i have not faced gear nob stuck issue.. only issue i faced twice was indicator sound disappeared twice.. one time i did force reset and the other time the system software itself restarted
@@sshhaank are those problems fixed now? Still the gear issue was a serious problem because you don't want be stuck in traffic due that. Overall how is the car for daily 120 km travel?
@@karanjadhav4597 i have car for about 1.5 months now, and no issues since 1 month.. car drives amazing.. for 120km, u will hav to keep charging daily i guess since i am getting about 270- 280 km range for full charge in city mode
They answered both the questions I had in the video. Thanks @motorinc
Let me give people an interesting story about this vehicle. I booked this vehicle and after booking it, i requested for a test drive in two showrooms in bangalore. I got the worst experience even Presales. They told me the car is not launched and it was just a rumor. Please note: they said this after i finished booking the EV. I had booked it in Salem. Had to cancel the booking because of the bad way tata sales people treated me.
Oh no! Would love to know what the questions were. Also - do you still have the booking?
@@motorinc Despite Cancelling the booking I still don't have a confirmation on when I would get the refund. I feel they are still trying to convince me.
The questions I had was -
1. Would be practical to have it as the first and only car?
2. How would the service be?
I'm only gonna use the car outside the city and would probably ride 50k kms in 8-10 years. Mileage is not an issue at all, But range is.
The service issue on the other hand is that, if I had a petrol car and the service centre people are irresponsible, I can go to any mechanic and get it fixed in a petrol vehicle. I can't go to anyone for an EV. I have to rely on Tata. That reliability is not something they have earned today. Also software issues scare me more. The bad service experience comes from my brother's Tigor EV. If anyone from tata reads this and thinks they can improve his experience, reach out to me and I'll connect you with him. Had charge stations brick the vehicle. Tata does send RSA? But it takes time. If this happens in any remote areas, at odd time, though the chances are very narrow, you'll feel the stress.
They really need to have better people in dealerships.
(This all night just be my pessimism for anyone reading. But if I'm spending 15 lacs on a car, I'm not supposed to in fear and anxiety. Just not my cup of tea. I put my peace of mind over anything else)
I think we used to have the same conversation about whether I should pay ₹2L extra for diesel over petrol and the answer would be if your daily driving is more, you would recover the extra money paid for the diesel engine in the long run. The same applies here. If your daily driving is 50-100 km, you can recover the extra premium of an EV quickly. The only caveat is that EV has the range issue that diesel engines never had. So from an economical POV, EV is suitable if mostly you have a daily driving of 50-100km in the city and occasional road trips to nearby picnic/tourist spots. IMO, EVs make much more sense for cab drivers because they can easily do about 200 km daily in the city, charge the passengers the same amount as other ICE cabs, and recover the invested money quickly. For others, you are investing the extra money more for the experience and less for savings.
Spot on Ameya! But we think the daily use has to be closer to 100 than 50.
Agreed@@motorinc
@@motorinc
That does it, then, doesn't it? If someone drives 30,000km in two years, there is the cost recovered right there - in two years! And after that, it's a steep downward curve on every km travelled - ₹3 per km (worst case scenario, commercial charging, some states/outlets charging more for stations, best case would be ₹2/km) as compared to ₹4.66 per km (best case scenario of 25km/L and assuming oil price at ₹100/L, ₹10,000 in annual maintenance).
What's crucial is to weigh whether people are willing to take 1 hour breaks every 3 hours to charge the battery for longer trips.
My dad drives a Tata Punch AMT Creative and he gets 13km/L in city and 22-24km/L on highways. However, he drives less than 8,000km in a year now and EV isn't really a cost effective solution from there. One can make the case for added comfort in even the base Punch EV, but that base model severely limits my father's drive to the hills on weekends.
I have a Harrier, and I like the feature of drive modes changing up to the higher mode when accelerating harder. Also, in Guwahati, the Eco drive mode works good because the traffic is that slow.
Thanks for sharing! What kind of efficiency do you get?
I have been a subscriber for a while now, but this is my first comment here. The content you guys are putting out is just awesome. I have been watching you guys individually for years now, I am 35 and an auto enthusiast so yeah. But never thought your combo would work so well. Awesome job guys, keep it coming!!
Heya Praveen! Glad you could join the conversation! Means a lot. Thank you.
U guys should start a series with guests for sat down discussion & have a free flowing conversation like u guys do normally. Guest suggestion ather ceo, ola ceo and mahindra ceo .
Thanks again Abhinav!
Actually a CEO who drives/rides what he/she sells would be better. Even if that's a (remote) possibility, the best would be a conversation with an actual buyer-cum-user - especially after the honeymoon phase of new car ownership is over.
Best part about you guys is that youre not biased like most of the other channels unfortunately and you actually have logical reasoning to support your statements over just simple explanation.
Would also love you guys to make another video on the ola s1 pro gen 2 as the entirely new suspension/throttle calibration are big enough changes that its worth another review, and if you could focus a bit more on the handling dept that would be great. If you are still in bangalore and would want to do a video on the s1 pro g2 let me know ill be happy to give my scooter to you guys for testing :D
Hey Agastya! We’ll take you up on that offer if needed. We are back in Mumbai now. Thanks so much! And wish you great travels!
@@motorinc Thank you! Please keep on pumping the content as 99% of the reviews are just pointing the camera and basically reading the spec sheet.
Purchased an ev already but still watch the other ev videos as the content is great
look forward for more
Thanks for letting us know! Which EV is it?
@@motorinc ola s1 pro gen 2. By ev generally people get cars in their heads as the first thought but a scooter is a vehicle nonetheless. Was talking about the bajaj chetak review you guys did a few days ago.
My father does want to go with a electric car too but given that the technology is immature and will evolve rapidly because it hasnt been researched upon kept me holding on for longer. + extra price/lack of fast chargers/charging infra in general is again is just restricting a bit more
Good morning @Motorinc 😎😎, was just waiting to see you guys...
Good to see you too SS!
In one of your previous videos I had mentioned how on Oct 6th 2023, I had given my Harrier XZ (the OG first gen) to the Lakshmi Tata OMR (chennai) to repair a rat bite. When you mentioned "service" I had to give you an update. Short version spoiler. I still don't have my car back. Long version, after pongal holidays they did give me the car and you know how after a heart surgery a human just looks 5 years older and other organs are affected, my car feels 10 year old even though it's 4.5 year old. They changed couple of wiring harness and airbag module and somehow managed to add these issues:
1. Steerling alignment is off by 10-15 degrees (yes they delivered it like this). I don't know how the delivery driver drove it like that to my office.
2. Battery drains overnight
3. Airbag indication still persists intermittently
4. AC works but can't change temperature and many other software errors and issues in drive mode, traction control, hill hold, etc.
On top of that, they lost my original RC which was in dashboard storage (I know, stupid of me to keep the OG RC there). Somehow they've also my battery cover but the bolts are there in the glove compartment. At this point, I guess any customer would go to consumer court but with everything going on in my life I just don't have the time and energy to go through that so I got the regional customer care head involved who put me in touch with the GM of this dealership who is supposed to solve all issues.
I know you can't do it but if you could, I would want you to ask the TATA leadership "should I buy a TATA EV?". Because their engineers aren't trained to handle the electrical components of lesser sophisticated cars that they have. I mean why spend so much on R&D to build a chasis that's comparable to RR Phantom when in one repair their service engineers can turn a fully functioning car with couple of wiring issuees into a completely non drivable car?
As I am writing this comment, I am wating for the GM who is on my case to give me an update with another excuse of why he can't deliver today because I am supposed to get it today.
Oh My God! So sorry to hear that! And thank you for keeping us posted.
Another point about having the charging point where the fuel filler cap would usually go is that when parked, the car now takes up extra room on the side which is not the case when the charger is mounted up front, extra space that can be taken up by two wheelers for people with small garages.
Thanks for the perspective!
5 lac more means from ICE to EV ; one has to drive 1 lac kms to even start break even(ing) the extra cost paid for the punch EV
shit doesnt make sense. you can literally buy another punch with that money 😂
@@nomanCyclewala Exactly
Check the difference between BHP.
The regen worked because the battery might not actually be full.
They could have limited the usable battery capacity and maintained some buffer capacity.
The buffer can also compensate for range loss over time, so that the end user doesn’t notice the range loss.
We're checking on this, IA!
I loved the discussion... It was fun and punchy 😂
Great to see the experts all through these years ever since the days of seeing them..or only chance was to see them through auto magazines ❤
Glad to have you with us here too Karthik!
I am one of those guys who listens to this podcast on Spotify while doing other stuff. Like on last Sunday, I was cleaning and polishing my motorcycle which got a bit dirty. I put on two podcasts from motorinc first back to back, and started doing my thing. By the time I was done it was already two hours up, my motorcycle was all cleaned polished and lubed and looked like this thing just rolled out of a showroom, yet during this entire process I was neither tired nor bored like everything I did was on autopilot mode. So as far as any improvements are considered, in my pov this podcasts lies strictly within "it ain't broken don't fix it region." So please keep up the good work, because looks like my vehicle's maintenance routine somewhat depends on it.😜
TVM! What a great way to have total automotive immersion! Glad we have a role in it and we plan to not interrupt your workflow!

I drive my Ignis daily to office and I become enthusiastic driver most of the times. I then listen to your reviews to calm me down and I reach office in a good mood. Thank you.
Yay for the Ignis and its owner!
On price, an apples to apples comparison would be on road price as for the electric versions there is lower taxation. With that considered, the gap would be much narrower.
Yes, it would. But the point still holds - the base variants don’t justify the price as well as the higher variants.
Some states no tax on ev but in some ev or ice, flat rate

A laugh within the first 15 secs, nice 👍
Quickest one yet!
I just love everything you guys talk about cars and motorcycles in this channel. Eagerly waiting for Thisconnect season 2.
Thank you Dr.RR!
Very nuanced, useful conversation. I was interested in this vehicle as soon as i came to know about it. I would rate it the best in India right now for the city car role. Automatic, powerful, safe, high seating, narrow footprint, robust and absorbent suspension, the suspension is specifically made to be 'gunned' on the worst of roads. Add to that the electric vehicle benefits, instant power and torque, and the super low running cost, and you have a winner, which is unbeatable right now. It's a mini-tank, which is fast and exciting to drive too, with almost nil running cost!
I just love this channel - knowledge, real world experience, logical explanation and lots of fun conversation that makes me crack up so well. It's a complete show not just a vehicle review. Amazing!

Good morning fellas.
This lights up my morning ❤
As your message did ours! Thank you! Have an awesome day!
Test drove this a couple days ago for my sister's daily commuting vehicle.
My biggest problem with the car is the lack of physical buttons. Almost everything is touch now. It's terrible. When I pointed it out, the guy said, "Sir, everything is voice controlled now, here's how." His voice command failed 4/4 times. It was embarrassing tbh.
I had this weird conversation at the very beginning of the test-the guy was explaining variants and that there's a long range variant and there's a medium range. I was surprised and quickly said "wow 3 battery sizes!" It was awkward as he explained the smaller battery is called the medium. Well done TATA.
The vehicle I drove was Tata Punch Empowered+ LR S.
The touch controls are annoying! They aren’t responsive enough.
Woke up to this... NOICE❤
Morning!
at 37:33 discussing about the slow response with the eco mode, it could also be a perfect use case for the bumper-to-bumper traffic situations where a super dulled throttle is convenient. I have this experience with my TVS Icube as well, while I'm in traffic, the sport mode feels very snachy and so i quickly move to the eco mode where it becomes much more manageable...
Thanks for sharing that Rahul!

Noted! There’s lot to discuss there!
42:40 Even I felt it that way! Its slightly tilted. May be because that one is a moving part. What I'm actually able to observe is that may be that whole part is not alligned to the rest of the body. You can see in the left part of that logo panel. Its mis alligned. I felt similar issues even with the new Nexon ICE version as well.
Oh really! We got to check the Nexon out too now!

Oh he has a take on the Nano? Didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing.
As a 20+ year old student and a petrol head, i listen to them while im writing my records. Heck i love their content so much, i revisit podcasts from thisconnect as well as first
Hullo DS! Thanks a ton for writing in! Love hearing from your side of the screen.
I think there's a logical thinking behind why Tata decided not to include spare wheel as standard.
Most people are going to drive an EV in cities only, where puncture is rare if you keep your tyre in good shape. And even if you got one you can repair it with puncture kit or simply use a tyre inflator and drive it to nearest shop easily. And even if you got a puncture beyond repair you can still call a mechanic in cities easily.
But you have to have a spare one when going for a tour outside city.
Fair enough!
The video Shumi mentioned about hiding booze in the frunk, it showed up on my IG a few days ago and I was equally as taken aback, more at the fact that they made that video AT THE OFFICIAL LAUNCH EVENT! 8:28
Kartik was searching for that!
Good to hear what TATA are doing and kudos for them🙌. Buying a EV in a country like India is an hard commitment due to our demographic be it the road network or charging infrastructure. But more than all it depends on which part of the country you are in. Remote places like hill stations/ghats, coastal belt, desert acquired land, snow/Himalayas and high altitude locations are the main concerns we need to look into as most or even all the EV manufactures only target tier 1,2 cities. That's where ICE cars have improved so well over years and one should only wait to buy EV in these regions with proper infrastructure and service and a promise by a brand.
Agreed, EV decision depends on plug point access.
Loved this episode as well. Just wondering if y’all got a chance to visit the Bharat Mobility Expo?
We didn’t. And, thanks!
Great Video. Lenthy but I watched it till the end❤. Apart from the new Chasis, is there any Volts difference between Nexon and Punch?
This is also a high voltage architecture 300+.
Hey you guys dint do first impression or podcast talk for Grand vitara... Will love to see your detailed views on this car

Thank you!
Welcome to the era, where cars need charging and software updates. I wonder am i an old man stuck in the new generation, or just too young to understand 😅
One day all of us will eventually shift to evs, but I’m happy its not today. 😊
With you!
I was about to sleep and you guys had me hooked till the end. Another great review. 5 ⭐s to you for that.😂
Thanks a ton! We'll pass your compliments on to the team!
Tata did this with the old Safari as well, when they launched the facelifted Safari Strome they changed its chassis.
Yep!
Actually Battery density and power frigures have gone up significantly over the years, so much so, that we are seeing a massive shift from NMC and other Nickel based cells to LFP based cell worldwide, which are supposed to be less power/energy dense. And yet, these new breed of LFP cells and the new battery pack architecture with a combination of electricals/electronics and software is delivering similar range/performance as the nickel based battery cells. 2023 was the first year when total LFP battery cells usage crossed the 50% mark, and it's only gonna go up. The plus is, LFP cells have 2-3 times longer life, are much less fire prone, not explosive, the only downside is they lose more range in subzero/near zero climate, but are better in withstanding heated conditions, so really a plus in all front in Indian driving condition.
Thanks for the deep dive! Super helpful!
Can you pls make a video on Eco, City & Sports Mode of Nexon Facelift? Also help with ideal modes for each dirving condition & relted rpm etc.
