    I’ve been listening to Eric for 30 years. I can’t remember ever hearing a bad note choice. His melodic sensibility is so tasteful.

      Well - just for variation then, try playing this at half speed and you'll have some idea what Eric Johnson might sound like if quite particularly drunk at around 4 in the morning ...

      actually i think there's a live version of cliffs of dover where he hits a wrong note... but then of course completely saves it. But maybe he did it on purpose to make us lesser guitarists feel good

    When he's moving around, listen to the lower voice, listen to how he moves the bass line. That's the key to making it all flow together cohesively.

      Yea, it is this counterpoint-like voicings. Melody and bass each go independend directions. Think you need to have two brains for improvising like this. Joe Pass did it. And Bach.

      @@batmandeltaforce you can get pretty far without learning theory but eventually it will hold you back. Especially if you ever wan't to jam with people which is the best part about music. Some take pride in being oblivious; these people are foolish. How arrogant of you to think you're smarter than the collective intelligence of your ancestors.

      @@batmandeltaforce that will get you there.. sort of. Being aware of what intervals you're using, interchange, borrowing from parallel keys, modulation, alterations, etc are going to be a lot more sensible with a full knowledge of note choice. Modes are just patterns and are 1 pixel in the whole landscape of theory.

    If you listened to everything that Eric says all the way up to 02:22 , stopped there with that clear assignment and went off and learned every note on each string.. you would be far better than those that never did and who are still living inside of that "box". Such great words of wisdom, Eric! Thank you. 😉

    I love how this lesson is always relevant. You can’t learn the fretboard well enough! Great way to think about it(adding 1-2 Notes at a time). “Chords are like melodies”. Thx Ej!

    It takes years to reach a certain level at guitar and then you watch this guy effortlessly play all three tone variation of a major scale in a melody like its nothing. Insane player, beautifull sound

    ric I’ve performed and taught guitar since I was a teenager. I’m 55 now. Started guitar after hearing the Hendrix Monterey recording. I was turned on to you by a fellow teacher/player Danny trainer in the phila area in 89, 90. Honestly, you are just a superb, sublime beautiful player. You take the guitar in a non trad jazz way to distant places. More classical Indian/trad Celt. An inspiration.

    Its 8am in🇲🇾🇲🇾..i was just practicing your solo! I put the treble on 0 and add reverb and delay...your scale is so different and melody is so beautiful...will entertain my family for Hari Raya on sunday playing your songs.thank you for the music Sir🌷
