was working at this venue in Houston and my first night, guess who was there...Eric Johnson was playing. I was overwhelmed by his playing.. I about got fired cause I was watching him more than working but who could blame me... Thanks Robert, this is such a great memory....
I appreciate the lesson, but I really love the presentation. I like that you're not perfect and that you break character with little jokes. It gives us a big dose of your personality, and it makes for a great watch. Thanks.
"the Electromagnets" I saw them live in a small club in Austin one Friday evening in 1973 playing material from their first album which hadn't yet been released. As good as they all were Eric was the most impressive and the most reserved. The next morning I was the only person in the local music shop just up the street when Eric and another band member came in to speak briefly with the only employee. Eric caught me looking at him across the room but we didn't speak. I was sure he recognized me from the night before as I came in just before the gig and just sat by myself on a barstool until they finished. I knew nothing about them but left speechless - the rest of the weekend.
The great thing about this hack is you can apply it to pretty much any scale. Vids like this always help me come up with new soloing ideas when I find myself just playing the same stuff over and over. Thanks man!
I watched so many videos but i noticed i only save urs. I believe teachin is what u were born to do. It 7 months n 4 days playing guitar. I know ill never be as good as u but its saved my life. I ty very much for what u do.
This unlocked a new level of mobility for me! I visualized all the Em/GMaj CAGED shapes linking up the and down the neck and I’m playing a short phrase then sliding to another shape. Just needed the seed of the idea, thanks!
Hey Brother! I can't thank you enough for your videos. I've been teaching, writing, recording and performing for many years. From Rockabilly,Folk,Country,Rock to metal and never could sound like Eric Johnson. Always kinda bothered me. But you Sir have unleashed the patterns that are the secret to Eric's style. It really helped and I'm just getting started! God Bless you Robert! Rob Ransom Appleton,WI
I've always noticed that about his playing, in regards to those big shifts and wondered how or rather what is he doing exactly? Thanks for giving me some insight on it! Great lesson!
Not the best at shifting around yet, I just started playing ~4 months ago. I do watch all of your “hack” videos and your explanations really help! Thanks and keep up the great work!!
Another great lesson, Robert! I always learn a lot from these. I think a Vito Bratta hack video would be a good one to do, too. I hear him do a lot of cool stuff in his solos, and there’s definitely an EVH influence.
There's a few people who have expanded this kind of idea to diatonic modes, arpeggios and double stops. Really great way to learn the fretboard and warm up.
Nice Robert ! You Got your Eric down ! Looks like you skip a box every two strings? Makes those leaps jump out ! Love to see you do some Jeff Beck ? Freeway Jam etc ??
Excellent, excellent...EXCELLENT! The only thing that surpasses the info here is YOUR MUSICIANSHIP!!!! What is your signal chain in this video? Many thanks!
Hack suggestion: A guy I always thought had a really unique style, but not many people really "know" is Gary Richrath. He has an unmistakable style that always seems to fit the song. Definitely one of the guys I love to listen to.
@@ModernGolfer Agree. I still think too many people hear "REO Speedwagon" and immediately think "Keep On Lovin You". Great song mind you, but if you really want to hear why Richrath was so amazing you need to listen to things like "157 Riverside" and "Golden Country"
Nice one Robert, good lesson, I'm glad even a good guitar player like your self has a week part. That is your decending on the scale and stuff, mine is I play one day and it sounds great, then I go back another day do the same thing and it sounds terrible 😄....I can't get my head around it, but Hay, I still love playing. Even I have trouble decending.......all the best and stay well.
Great look into the EJ style hack. Eric’s Ah Via Musicom album played a huge part in my life while deployed for Desert Storm/Shield. Had plenty of time to learn that album during those months. Thanks for sharing your vids!!!
OMG it's Robert Baker time! (two years too late :(). love the guitars man! I need an electric badly. It would lift my music up a whole lot but I only have an acoustic
I think I got close. I was stewing over this but it's pretty simple. Vox AC30 with overdrive and reverb, tuned to suit your pickups. Not super complicated but daaaaaaang it sounds heavenly.
@@osherez6597hermida audio makes a pedal called “Dover Drive” it’s the closest I’ve gotten to the EJ tone. Especially if you run it into another overdrive pedal with some delay
Any tips to get that tone out of humbuckers? I’ve got an ESP/LTD EC1000 with Seymour Duncan’s but no coil split unfortunately. Are you using a lot of compression and reverb? Sounds like a lovely ‘big’ sound as you say in the video. P.S. Love these “hack” vids. How about some Reb Beach style hacks soon?
I love your videos. Great content, great player and you seem like such I decent fellow.....but you are now the cream of the crop for wearing a Macho man T-Shirt
How can people dislike free guitar tips from an amazing guitar player? I really dont get haters, I'll take advice from anyone that can play like Robert !!
Great! Lesson Robert. There needs to be another 300 million EJ lessons!
Thank you buddy
I remember when I discovered Eric. Greatest day ever.
Same here!
Same!
Same but different! Lol
Same!
I remember your M O T H 3 R
"Not today box 2, see you lata" totally made me laugh out loud for some reason. Caught me off guard lol.

That tone in the beginning is gorgeous
Gotta love Eric Johnson licks and his tone

Beginning lick to TRADEMARK solo, is a FANTASTIC Xample as well, the entire solo is a text book! That shiftg is MAGNIFICO too, grt job brother Rob

The Eric Johnson tone is really instantly recognizable
Great Lesson!! But honestly, I was speechless until the end of the video for the tone! That's a nice EJ tone!!!

Love your teaching style & humor.... a black guard Tele? Sweet
Nice video.
The “longer “ intervals really make the sound.
👍🏻

I don't think Eric picks every note in the fast pentatonic stuff where he descends. but nice vid. great to just change your approach now and then.
Great lesson--jolting me out of the rut that I am in with my playing! Thank you, Robert.
Great lesson!.... Great production. Really, excellent camera work sound quality and editing
Wow what a cool lesson! I subbed. Side note, purple shirt and white strat is good vibes.
Stellar lesson, dude :) I have never thought of skipping boxes like that! Very fluid sound!
Awesome. Thanks for this. I've been looking for exercises to help "break out of the box".
What an amazing tone at the beginning of the video😍

That intro jam tho! 🔥🤘🎸
Great lesson Mr. Baker
"throw in your other Eric Johnson Riffs". Ah yes, my deep wealth of Eric Johnson riffs. Great lesson!

Watching this type of videos makes me see another way to play the guitar
Elliot Easton video? Underrated lead guitar player. Love the lesson series bro!
I really like this lady, she makes the best videos
Great explanation on the EJ style. I’ll try to incorporate it a bit and see where it takes me.
Awesome lesson Robert! EJ is such a phenomenal player.
Thank you again for another insightful lesson love your sense of humor while teaching
Perfect video for my Birthday... thank you!
🎸🤓🎸🇺🇸☮️
Killer reverb, sweet licks and Fuzz forever
Great lesson! Thanks Robert

Love the tone.... aside from the "hack"!
Just learned the intro to Gem! He is definitely one of my favorites!
so coooool and so good humor. I love this series so much. Good job sir. Keep up this series pls
Dude, that tone 👌🏼
3:07 - very catchy.
Great lesson man! Always trying to take my skills to the next level and your videos continually give me all kinds of ideas.
Great lesson Robert! Can I sign up for the Black Guard Telecaster? Thanks!

Reo Speedwagon was a killer band. Still say, if I was a gazillionaire and wanted to hire the world's best 'backyard party band', REO would be it! 🤘

Roll with the changes!
3:06 what I came to see
Robert: just playing this to show you this ISN’T what we’re getting into today.
Lmaooo RIP

Great vid again. Marty Friedman next please
Loving this! More lessons on how to mix up those boxes would be fab!😎👌
Great lesson! thanks Joe Dirt!
Great video, EJ and Randy Rhoads are my top two guitar 🎸 heroes
Eric is my favourite guitarist thanks bro you are amazing. I like the tone it’s really Eric Johnsons sound. 😍🤘
Eric
love these runs!
I'm too lazy to learn that stuff. But the Strat is awesome.
Thank you for sharing so much expertise with us. I am constantly learning stuff from you on all of your videos. Great job!
Two of my favorites are Robert Baker and Carl Brown.
Great lesson as always Robert!
Great lesson Robert! This content is great brother!👍👍
I'd love to see a Paul Gilbert hack video. Great lesson!
righteous tone, robert 🖖
I'm a big fan of Eric, and I've seen tons of videos and I never seem to crack his code, but these videos are helping a lot!
If you haven’t already found him, Troy Grady does the best breakdown of EJ’s picking and style I’ve seen.
@@loganpirie4387 he said crack the code haha - i have a hintiling that he knows the vids
I love learning old def leppard
Awesome breakdown!
Wow. I like that. I will be practicing that for sure

Thanks Robert for this great vid and for the free tabs ! You’re gem🇫🇷👍🏼🍒
Every time I see that strat, it’s an instant click on the video. It’s beautiful.
That strat always get me!
GREAT LESSON THX😁
Kirk Hammet next!! Love this series..
very cool break down
Both Eric‘s work for me Johnson and Clapton. DABO
Started watching then immediately had to pause to grab the guitar!
Awesome job, but the bigger question is how you built that tone? Sounds amazing.
I was just thinking the same. Distracted by the godly tone I barely learned anything haha

Awesome intro, thanks for this hack man!, how about that weird vibrato thing he does, it sounds like a japanese Koto
It's like a weird tapping thing
One day, one day i will play like him.
