Saying goodbye to San Francisco

- After a lifetime of living in San Francisco, it’s finally time to say goodbye. Here are my thoughts about leaving the city where I was born and raised.
(And to those who want to use this opportunity to crap on the city, allow me to direct you to the nearest toilet instead)

I truly appreciate all the words of support, and all the heartfelt stories and anecdotes. I don’t think I could have asked for a better group of people to be watching my videos. ❤️
Wow, what a surprise! Congratulations on your new house & good luck!
I lived in San Francisco when Jerry Garcia was alive and I saw the grateful dead play 70 times. The fun loving San Francisco is gone and has been replaced by a Diane Feinstein democratic party that has totally ruined San Francisco. I feel bad for the younger generation that doesn’t get to see San Francisco in its glory.
I'm glad you're not going too far! San Francisco needs to hang onto the perspective of natives like you whose heart is truly there. I'm not native, but feel like one, since I've loved SF since the first time I visited when I was seven years old. I lived in the Sunset for several years in the 70s and 80s and loved your videos, because I could tell exactly where they were taken, like oh, sure that's way out on Irving in the Avenues! High fog as usual, looks like a typical Saturday afternoon in the Sunset District. Your mention of your family connection to Isleton was also interesting. I've long been fascinated by the Delta towns such as Isleton and Locke along the beautiful river. I admire your reverence for your family's history in this area, and your appreciation of what a unique place this is. It's changed in recent years, and aside from the impossibly unaffordable housing, SF isn't a great place to raise a family at this time. I hope that changes. Wishing you and your new family the best in your new home. Please keep posting! 🌉

@@Trump-dj3xu It was a great city alright. Fun & creative & easygoing. Now it is a hellhole
I think every remaining SF native can relate and the situation is tearing at their heart daily. I thought you'd be moving much further away, but it's a big change coming from SF to anywhere else. I've spent my whole life here as well, and your channel helped me learn a lot about home that I never knew. Good luck to you!
I was going to say the exact same thing. Only Natives & long-time locals truly know how much it hurts to see these changes happening- and the prospect of leaving is SCARY. Coz you know once you leave, you may never be able to come back, unless you got a lot of money to throw around. My husband and I entertained the idea of buying a home in Oakland or Richmond about five years ago, and it honestly was not that much cheaper there! And we kept getting outbid, it was super disheartening. We decided to stay here in our current place of 20 years as renters in the Inner Richmond , and I can't say I regret it. But I totally understand the desire to move, especially if you're young person and have a lifetime of building a family in front of you. San Pablo is not that far away, and I actually do know this place! Because Alex's Burgers, formally Nib's, was there for a few years.
You should totally check out Nib's, it's now in Oakland ❤️

Just imagine, if you were moving to Canada, you’d need to learn “aboot” an entire different version of English!
San Pablo is so nearby, that you’ll still be around, so no worries. 😅
I discovered you because of your San Francisco content, but followed because of your superpowers for storytelling, videography, and showing the goodness in everything. You'll take those with you wherever you go!
So true!
Agreed!!
I think it's a right to live where you were born. I was born in SF Outer Richmond District and it's sad to say that I can't afford to live there and haven't lived there since joining the military in 2000. That's a long time and now that I'm a civilian, it's sad that I can't afford to return and enter the city every weekend as a visitor.
i was born in the inner richmond, parents bought their place in the early 90s, even they couldnt afford their current place if they tried to move now. its nuts. thats why i live in SSF/daly city now
I agree, but I believe I'm in the minority. I was born in the Presidio (my dad was career Army). I loved the city and it was such a wonderful place back then. After I graduated high school I joined the Army in order to earn money for college. After 8 years I was eager to return to SF. I did, but was surprised at how expensive it got. After 5 1/2 years, I moved out of the city. Although I do miss living there, it's been so long that I have and I am no longer a young man. The city has become a place for the young and the rich, which I am neither.
I worry that my children will move away because it is so expensive in SF.

As a fellow native San Franciscan, I hear you man. I’ve managed to stay here but it’s a question I ask myself every day as the future looks more and more ridiculous from a financial standpoint to stay. I don’t think I’m the only one to think this but I came initially for the SF content and stayed because you are a good artist with a distinct voice and I will support you in whatever videos you choose to create next. Cheers
I will cherish the time wandering aimlessly through SF together, taking pictures, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time, eating at Beeps, getting to know you at Philz, experiencing the Sunset, and our several meetups are the Coffee Movement. You’ve enriched my experience in this city, and gave me the chance to feel a little more connected to this city that was completely alien to me two years ago.
My heart is full. Everything you wrote is exactly why I love doing this and showing people all that is good about this city. ❤️❤️❤️
Haha beeps I used to live in that neighborhood I want to beep recently. Let's just say it's not as good as he used to be. 🥲😥. But I'm glad it's still around. Now if they can just tear down them ugly condos across the street he'll be even better.
4:35 I was just waiting for you to say, "I left my heart in San Francisco"!
I'm sad that you'll be leaving because of housing prices but happy for you to have found a place to call your own within the Bay. I've loved learning about (and falling in love with) the city from your videos, and I look forward to what content you make next!
Have a great new adventure in San Pablo! Just a short BART ride away.
Change IS good and inevitable, Joey. Best wishes to you in the next chapter of your life. I will continue to watch and support your art in whatever form it takes. Warmest regards to you & your wife. So long for now.
The increased homelessness and trash here is very off putting & it’s progressively gotten worse every year I’ve lived here. Plus, unless you have great rent control, it’s insane what people pay to rent or buy here. Consider yourself lucky!
Dude, San Pablo is just 15-20 minutes away from the city 😂 I thought you’re moving out of California or another country. But I feel you, home is home and your home is SF. I never commented to any of your posts, this is my first time (hmm..I hope I’m right 😂), welcome to East Bay. I can’t wait to see your “East Bay” exploration posts. All the best. Maybe see you here in Hercules. 😂
Baseball player Willie Mcgee lives in Hercules, I think?
Congrats, Joey! Can’t wait to see what you make next! 🙌🙌👊
Good luck, Joey!! I was worried because we hadn't heard from you in a while. You've helped me appreciate SF more than ever, I can't wait to hear you tell the stories of SF and more Bay Area places in the future. Also, funny thing, after watching your videos I realized I'd already seen you on UA-cam! You make a few cameos in videogamedunkey's video about collector's editions of games, hilarious stuff. Thanks for all that you do. 🌁
I was born and raised in SF - 20 years ago when I became a mother I wanted to purchase a home so I too had to leave. I bought a nice home in a great neighborhood in Oakland. Now that I am considering retirement - I’m thinking about selling my home and moving to less expensive City…
The timing of this is eerie as I’m preparing to leave myself. I discovered your channel right after my husband and I decided to leave and started looking at where we might go. As a resident of the Richmond, your video’s made me cry with homesickness for a place I hadn’t even left yet. Over a year later, we have our first baby and are under contract on a house much farther away, in Raleigh, NC, that we’ll be moving to in December. Thank you for making these videos. It’s comforting to know I can get swept back up in SF any time I’m feeling extra homesick, just by visiting your channel. Congrats on your new home and can’t wait to see what videos you have in store!

Thanks for sharing. I was born and raised in the Richmond District and lived there till I was in my mid 30s. I live in another country now for 5 years and still haven't been back. I will one day though. Change is very good like you said. San Francisco will always be there for us. I was hoping to meet you out in the Richmond District in the future and show you some of my secret beautiful locations in the Presidio and Richmond District. One day maybe. Cheers and take care.
Dang, I'm super bummed that your videos about the Richmond will no longer be popping up on my UA-cam feed. As a fellow Bay Area native, I can relate to everything you said on a personal level. Thanks for all of your explorations of this incredible area. I'm glad to hear the channel isn't ending, and look forward to your videos with a broader lens! There are so many awesome places to explore in the Bay Area and you're not going that far. All the best in your "second phase!"
Good Luck Joey! It kills me to see a native San Franciscan having to move out of the City because of the cost of housing here. I wish I had an extra house to give you. I have struggled to keep our Sf house in the family. San Francisco is just like Rome, Paris, and London, the only people who can afford to own something are the wealthy, or those that managed to keep the house in the family from generation to generation. So far I'm lucky and the family house in the inner-Sunset is still going strong after almost 65 years. San Pablo is a great little town I spent summer weeks there as a child at my Auntie Mary's house on 18th St. a few doors down from Davis Park; lots of great memories. Thank you for all the great videos, from one native San Franciscan to another.
I just moved here in the last year. I found your channel and was excited to go to all the places you talk about. I imagined bumming into at places and having a beer with ya. Sad to see you go but thanks for all the videos and I'm excited to see where the channel goes from here. Best of luck to you and family in the move
I cannot "like" this in good conscience :) Especially since you're leaving my beloved Richmond! Good luck on your next chapter, though! I totally get the struggle about home ownership. Hope you find a great place over there! Thanks for being such an advocate and storyteller. Your videos brought so much joy to us during lockdown. One of the things that our family did during those long months was work our way through the Steepest Streets, and we still have a couple that we need to visit sometime :) Keep telling those Bay Area stories, and hope you can come back soon!

i love your channel and i am so sad to hear you are leaving, although as a local i also get it. im lucky to have a family home here from my family already, and i dont take that for granted at all. come back anytime!
I will continue to follow your channel and support. I can relate as Im a native and bought my first home in the East bay. You will find new joys and adventures.. and San Francisco will be there for you to enjoy, appreciate and share. Best of luck Joey!
I had to move after my 1st year at SFSU and just commute because it was too expensive to live on or off campus in the city :( it definitely feels like you’re leaving a piece of your heart behind but it just makes me appreciate the time I do get to spend out there, even if most of it is spent at school, in a car, or on public transport haha 💓
My initial reaction was, “oh no!“
My second reaction was we need to set up a go fund me so Joey can afford a house in San Francisco.
Then I was like San Pablo? It takes about the same amount of time to drive from Richmond district to the financial district, as it does from San Pablo to the financial district… At 3 AM… But still it’s not far away. People commute from much further away.
Imagine if you lived in LA, and said you were moving away from LA, the same distance 😂
The one thing I am glad about is that you will still be making videos!
Thanks dear Joey. Of course you have my support!!!!
And I totally understand.....
Thanks for your once more philosophical encouragements....as a lifelong native, I completely relate to this quandary.
Love and success!!

I moved to the Richmond a few years ago after finishing school and found your videos early in the pandemic last year. I've always felt super lucky to randomly end up in this lovely neighborhood and getting to experience it the way you see it; your videos have truly made me love it even more. Can't wait to see what the future holds for you and will definitely keep watching! 💖
As a guy named Joey who also has lived in SF all of my life this video pains me because I also have a deep love for this city. Hopefully you make your way back here take care of yourself. it pains me everyone I grew up with has left for the exact same reasons everyone else who grew up here left, it's cost of living. As fellow Joey I'll keep a eye on the city until you get back😆
Congratulations. You are so young. My husband was born and raised in the city. Then moved to San Ramon. Then to Irvine CA where he met me. Fast forward 30 years and we are moving back to the city. Eventually we will end up in wine country as we move into our golden years. I wish you happiness in your life’s journey.
So many of us have been out priced in SF. It sucks. I was born there. The property taxes did me in. Oh well. NEVER look back !
I have a number of friends who have left San Francisco and even the greater bay area over the last couple of years. They have moved to Austin, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Florida. Not one of them has told me they are happy with their new home city and most regret leaving the bay area. I know this is not a large sampling but not one of my friends would leave if they knew how unhappy they would be in their new locations.
Some things are necessary. Moving seems necessary for you and your wife Joey. For $$ reasons My wife and I had to leave SF moving to (at that time) a much cheaper Oakland condo. This was back in 1986. After acclimating to the pace and people we fell in love with it and thrived there. 3 years later we had to move because it was too small to run my business there. We sold just before Loma Prieta hit. After the quake we couldn’t find anything around Oakland, but with the $ from the sale we’re able to put a down payment on a 600 sq’ house in ….. Bernal Heights, where we still live. I know with the prices in SF things seem impossible, but things seemed impossible back then too. Sometimes going with the flow, though scary can bring you back to where you want to be. You know, like those rip tides @ Ocean Beach. It may take an earthquake to open a door but crazy things happen. I love your videos and I’m sure you’ll find and create gems wherever you go. Your love, passion, and intelligence shows! You’ll do well!
May you always keep that clean Richmond district accent! ;-) Best of Luck!
Congrats on becoming a homeowner Joey & good luck with the move. I wouldn’t have been able to move back to SF without my parents financial help so acknowledging that intergenerational wealth ( even with one generation) was my lucky card. Looking forward to your channel growing and being able to sit with some awkwardness / discomfort as you take this next step. Either way the video will have your great storytelling, production & editing.
I found your videos because of my interest of the historic parts of San Francisco like the Lands End, Sutro baths area. Love your videos!!! As a born and raised East Bay Californian, I’ve always been interested in the nooks and crannies of San Francisco. The creativity and the research that goes into your videos is awesome!!! As a married 30 something, I can share your struggle in the wanting to stay in the Bay Area and wanting to afford a home. I’ve had several cousins live in the city, but now have left because of that same reason….it’s expensive. I’ll still watch your vids even if you don’t live in San Francisco! Lol! You share the same struggle as all of us raised in Northern California….and in California in general. Hopefully this will change someday. Crossing my fingers.

I love San Francisco and always will. The City’s changed a lot, there’s a lot to talk about.
I can totally relate to the question of “do I have right to live here?” I’ve lived in SF for the last 30 years and grew up in Mill Valley but alas I am not rich enough to buy a home here. You may have the “right” but if you don’t have the money, it doesn’t really matter. I’ve spent pretty much my entire life within 15 miles of my current Richmond district home but am looking to where I might be able to retire someday, and I’m pretty confident it will not be here.
Welcome to San Pablo! I live in the border of San Pablo and Pinole. It’s a small city with nothing much to do, but it’s not too bad. I hope you like it!
Congrats!! Big fan of your channel. Your videos are impeccably done and engaging! I spent a year living in Berkeley and working in SF. So grateful I get to go out there and visit.
I currently live in El Sobrante (practically San Pablo) and I gotta tell you it's not too bad here. It isn't SF I know, trust me like you I am also an SF native, but the entire Bay Area is just something special in itself no matter where you live. Enjoy!
If you ever decide to do a video about another place in the bay area come up to Guerneville it’s a great little town in the woods
goodluck to you man, I moved from Chicago to SF about 11 years ago and it was hard to move out of SF for me too. I moved out to Hayward this summer cause I wanted a home but couldnt afford the SF prices. Miss SF a lot even though I’m still close by!!
Congrats Joey, and welcome to my old stomping grounds ❤️ Very excited to see what you’ll make next
I’m very happy for you! I moved from the California desert in Palm Springs to SF 2 years ago and moving out of all that I have ever known has been great and bittersweet experience. Your videos showed me a lot about this city, and I’m excited to see where this channel goes as you grow in your journey :)

You're 34 man?! You look a lot younger!
Recently started watching your videos and am planning to move to SF this year (Sunset district). Never thought I would be able to afford it, but the prices here in Sonoma County are rising as the ones there are dropping due to covid so might as well try it while I can! I was born in Vallejo; my mom from San Pablo/Richmond. Coming from SF I doubt you would find it rough there, you just gotta have common sense in certain areas. People that come from this wine valley bubble sometimes see it as a culture shock haha. There is a lot of culture and history to San Pablo though - Check out the Eagles Hall! If you're into hiking Wildcat has some great trails and views; bunch of geocaches hidden there too! There's Rockefeller Lodge and several other earthquake hotspots... East Bay cities get a lot of bad rep but it holds a lot of the culture that has been gentrified in other parts of the Bay Area. It may not be as fancy (you legit will have bars and bullet proof glass on windows and gas stations in some areas), but you also have more of a melting pot than you get in a lot of the state. At least that's my experience... I'm sure you will have some fun adventures!
As someone who was also born and raised in SF, I can totally relate with what you’re going through. I also moved to the east bay this year, but both my parents and my husband’s parents are in SF, so we visit often! It’s like we never left. I’m sure you’ll have that same experience, you’re only a bridge away from home :) good luck and maybe we’ll bump into each other in the east bay!
I grew up in Berkeley many years ago and hung out ALOT in San Francisco over the years...there's just no other place like it..hope to some day in my late years to visit again..we'll see 💖 Enjoy your new journey....you can do it!
Discomfort is growth. Do good things where ever you are at. Good luck and look forward to more videos!
At the beginning of your video I felt like crying. We're the generation that grew up in this city, love it, but can't afford living here anymore. I'm glad you're not moving far away. I think it would be a good idea to make videos about the bay area. I'm looking forward to what other type of videos you decide to do. Congratulations on your new house.
I've noticed that, in the comments, several people are non-plussed by the notion of Joey having to make such a big deal of moving a BART ride away from San Francisco proper. In many American cities (and foreign ones as well) his move would be akin to changing neighborhoods. No big deal, right? Well, speaking as a native San Franciscan, it lS somewhat of a big deal. I think it may have something to do with the bridges and the fact that SF is surrounded by water on three sides. I can attest to a very strange and sometimes uncomfortable sensation that San Franciscans experience when they leave The City proper for the North, South or East Bay. It's not as strong on the Peninsula, but the East Bay can feel like another part of the country. Crossing that bridge can be quite anxiety provoking. I know this sounds absurd, but I'm sure other long-time residents of San Francisco can back me up. Wishing you the very best in San Pablo, Joey.
New subscriber here! Sorry for the late comment. I made the decision to leave my home town not once, not twice, but three times! I've come to realize that the important thing in life is being somewhere that allows you to do what you're passionate about. My journey took me away from my beloved PNW and now I'm a homeowner on the East Coast, which basically cements my departure from my childhood. I miss the West Coast immensely, but now I'm working in my dream field doing what I know I'm meant to be doing. Life is all about balance. I wish you all the best in your new home :)
It's a little bit hard for me to understand how it's hard for somebody to leave the city they live in because I've moved between 5 cities/towns in 24 years (including me moving to the US). Especially since it's still considered San Francisco (Metropolitan Area). I'm desperate to move from where I live now lol. I'll miss my friends and some family, but they are doing their life anyway. And we don't see each other that often because they have work, children, etc... But I appreciate your story because it gives me a new perspective.
Sorry to see you leave your city of so many years. :(
Joey, I've been commuting into the city for the last year and living in the East Bay & North Bay for the last 11 years. I'm finally moving into Hayes Valley this month and have been researching SF. I subscribed a couple minutes into your video on the Sunset, and this is the next video I clicked because I thought you were moving away away. It's truly apparent that you are an expert and are very passionate about SF, so I hope that we do get some east bay videos as well- looking forward to binging the rest of your content. When you said a city no one's ever heard of I thought you meant Benicia or Vallejo where I lived. Hope you're well!
I’m eager to see how your channel carries on, but I sure can understand your feelings about leaving SF. It’s so sad that big money is driving out the very people that have made the city what it is.
All the best on your next adventure! I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos over the years. Thank you for showing me more about the city I love. Sending all good wishes… and lucky San Pablo for gaining wonderful new residents!! ❤️

San Francisco loses an Ambassador to it's City. So sorry to hear that you got priced out of SF. I always looked forward to your interesting views on our hometown. I too had leave my city of 60 years, but, I still drive an hour once a week to "come back" to SF to see friends and to partake in the best food culture; so can you. Good luck in finding interesting things to do in San Pablo. Please continuing making videos, whatever the subject.
Never say never to things, ie, shaving your mustache in 2021. You look great without it!!!
What a wonderful experience your videos have been for me.! I can't wait to see your next chapter.
I feel you. I was also born in SF. Will always have love for the city. But The city has become an elitist bubble where everyone there is out of touch with what the rest of the world is like. It’s just strange
I sort of understand what you're feeling. But you're leaving right after your vid on steep streets was featured on sfgate!
I hope you'll enjoy what Caen called the Mysterious East (Bay). I was born over there but haven't lived there since I was 18 months old. I'm surprised that you found any neighborhood in the Bay Area that's affordable, especially one that close in.
We moved a lot, one hell of a lot, when I was growing up - it's a military thing. But 47th Avenue in The Richmond was my permanent address for all those years. [On an unrelated note, I just found an insurance policy on the house on 41st Avenue on The Sunset that we lived in before and after our time in Occupied Japan in the early 50s.] I have lived in the [non-voting] District of Columbia since 1979 but this area is still home and I'm in the process of completing my move back to Sleepy Little Mountain View.
I wish you well and look forward to your next videos.
well wishes, my dude! love your content and excited to see what's in store for you and family in San Pablo!
Thank you for everything so far!! It’s awesome to find a community who appreciates this place as much as I do. I’m moving to NY in January, but like you I will be back! :)
Have a wonderful time in San Pablo, Joey! You'll no doubt find a plot of land here in SF to call your own one day. I know it.
I was wondering where your new San Francisco videos were at
Leave the city and explore around the world man. I left SF in early 2021 and I can't be much happier. By far one of the best decisions I ever made
I’m so glad that you are still in the Bay Area. Welcome to the East Bay! I really look forward to more of your wonderful videos and your unique perspective on city life, but now about all of the other great small cities we have in our wonderful part of the world.

Born in SF. Raised in Vallejo. Love the city. But don't miss not being able to just drive and park in front of your house without having to drive around for parking, let alone having to feed a meter.
32 years in SF, I raised a now 21-year-old son, the city is still magical but I am ready for a new adventure in a new place. A little farther away than the east bay

I’m a native San Franciscan who was priced out 20 years ago. Ended up in the SCM until I was priced out as well. In LA, still trying to get back to the Bay.
It’s a tough move to leave SF. I did the same and landed in Berkeley, but like you said there’s still something new and exciting about something new. Enjoy East Bay, it’s quite charming.
hey Joey, I dont think it atters WHERE you film, you are pretty great at this film thing- so here's to new adventures with your wife & family!
Wow this is really heartbreaking. Please keep making videos abt the city and about the Bay area as a whole. But holy shit SF has lost way too many of it's finest
Good luck Joey! East bay is still Bay Area and hope to still see you around.
You are only 20 minutes from the city, by bart or car. I was born there, and as much as I love it, I am glad I don't live there. I even tried to live there in the late 90s, and it became apparent that it was impossible on normal wages. I settled in the Northbay, and visit when the weather is good. Taking the ferry from vallejo is so much fun. Living there makes you hate it, but visiting keeps it fresh.
First time viewer. I live right by the Balboa theater I need that shirt right now. Also, I'm moving in November for more filmmaking opportunity so good luck to the both of us. Keep on keepin' on brother.
I wish you the best of luck.
I was anticipating you saying that your plans would take you to Seattle. I live in the Richmond district, and over the last couple of years, 3 neighbors have moved up there.
You're not going far, and I think that you should explore widening your video range to other parts of the Bay Area.
I, too, am a native SF'n, and I'm the only one in my family ... parents, siblings, aunts/uncles ... who has declared herself a "city mouse," and not left. Most of them went to the Wine Country. That's a great place to visit, but I'm always glad to return to "The City."
Congratulations! Good Luck! Thank you!!! I love your channel, and the reason you are moving makes me sad. I wish you the best going forward.
You look just like your grandfather. I grew up in East Bay, went to junior college in San Pablo Contra Costa College, SFSU, and worked in SF. Once you get used to it, using BART, it's not that far and from San Pablo Ave in the city of San Pablo coming from Hilltop Dr. you can see SF on a clear day. It's honestly not that bad less crowded. Public Transportation is so connected, gets to SF and the Airports in no time, you'll probably be more grateful for the move in the long run. With that being said, there is a feeling of unfairness to what has happened with people getting priced out of their childhood neighborhoods if they want to stay.
I’ve loved watching your content and getting to know the neighborhoods and the city. Best wishes on the next chapter of your journey.
Sorry to hear you're leaving! But hey, maybe the new spot will be amazing for you! Best of luck!
Although I was not born in SF, I migrated to SF in 1993 until leaving for the East Bay (Hayward) in 2017. Although I miss it, the cost and issues living there proved too much.
You are a truer SF fan and San Franciscophile than 95% of people living in the city proper. Where you live doesnt matter. It's what's in your heart. Thank you for sharing your SF videos and never stop. Keep it going! Videos about the east bay would be awesome as well!
Hey new neighbor! SP is great! I make day trips to the city at least a few times a month, makes each trip going there a special event.
Great video! Looking forward to the new material.
Bro! you're moving 30 minutes away. You'll be alright. I was born and raised in LA 36 years and moved to DFW. Now that's a move. Good luck!!!
Just discovered your channel, excellent work. On behalf of the Empire, we give thanks! Huzzah!
Hi Joey! Stumbled upon this video by chance. I got really excited when you mentioned isleton ca, because as a toddler i would often visit my grandparent there. I had to stop the video at 5:52 becuase i recognized the historical building in the background. But ive never seen them look the way they did in its glory days. Do you ever visit ? that would be really awesome if you made a video of isleton and its VERY unique history.
I haven’t ever visited, but I really, really want to at some point. It has such an interesting history so closely tied with my family, that it would be a shame not to.
Good luck man, change is good. I left home (East Palo Alto) after 35 years in May 2021 to move to Chicago!

You're a real one, and I appreciate your content, no matter where you live. 👍
You have done an outstanding job playing tribute to and mythologizing a city that, aside from location, seems to have lost the charm and spirit that made it special. On our last visit, I was surprised by how many angry and aggressive people we observed or encountered. It is sad to see vibrant cities loose creative thinkers like yourself. But SFs loss is San Pablo's gain. I hope you are able to enjoy your new community and contribute as much as you did to SF.
Joey, I agree. It's tough to leave a place you've called home your entire for a new horizon, but at the same time, it will also be a time of excitement for you as well. I know this for fact, because I did it. Well, sort of, anyway. A little over two years I ago, I left my lifetime home of 17+ years, located in Windward Oahu, for college at Notre Dame. And I did this with relatively little experience with travel to other cities; the only places I had ever visited before in my entire life, before I began college, was San Francisco and my ancient ancestral homeland in Japan. I only added Chicago to my short list during a trial visit to Northwestern during my tour of potential schools to attend, while in my last years in high school. So that said, I was quite a rookie at experiencing new places and cities. While going away to school isn't exactly comparable as the long-term situation you're about to embark on---I do get to come home for our extended Christmas breaks, as well as summers (and in less than 2 years I will be finished with school)--it was, at first for me, a period of significant adjustments. Going from a life of living at the family homestead in Hawaii to South Bend was a big change for me. Especially during that annual 3 month period called "winter" that seems to last longer than it's supposed to. All told, the change of my scenery was initially scary, fun, educating, lonesome (at times)--totally eye-opening for me. I'm glad I decided to attend college 4200 miles from home. I've learned and experienced so much from being away from what is familiar to me. The change did me good. I'd like to say one thing to you about your move to San Pablo: Embrace the change. You'll be experiencing new things, in a new place, while at the same time, you're still just a short drive away from your beloved Richmond---assuming the traffic on the Bay Bridge isn't too bad! And when your time is up in San Pablo, and you've returned to The City for good, you'll only appreciate being back home that much more, after being away. Good luck, Joey, with your move to San Pablo. Just remember that San Francisco will be always be there for you, eagerly awaiting your return!
Thank you for all of the videos and good luck in your new home.
bruh, gonna miss your amazing content, don't stop! We natives need to have a visualization of this love affair we share with this beautiful city/experience.
Good luck on your move to San Pablo, still close to SF and you can use BART if you are still working in the City.
Congrats on finding a home that is still in the bay.
You can always go back to San Francisco every once in awhile for a visit whenever you want.
I totally understand your situation about living where you were born. I can’t afford to live In Carmel/Big Sur. I had to move to Northern California. It ‘s still in my home state . I moved to Arizona and love it but my family is in California.
Good luck with your new adventure! I had to leave SF approx. 5 yrs ago. But I still live nearby (Upper Peninsula). I love the City, but I'm not ready to come back yet.
While there is the matter of I-80 traffic, alas, San Pablo is definitely within shouting distance. Hope it works well for you.
