- The stock focuser on the Meade SN8 schmidt newtonian is, shall we say, not very good. These are the steps I took to install the cheapest dual speed crayford focuser I could find on Amazon. Improvement? Very much so.

Thanks for giving me an idea of how to drill a larger hole. I'm doing this upgrade right now and that's the first obstacle I encountered.
Glad I could help!
Excellent job on upgrading the focuser and excellent video on steps needed to incorporate a focuser onto an ota , I'm definitely going to attempt this process on my scope as it came with a very rough single speed focuser as well. Thanks for taking the time to make this video and share your process
Glad it helped. It made a lot of difference for me.
I built a 10" Dob ages ago (1983). Now I have a 10" Pyrex blank and I'm going to build a more sophisticated telescope. Thanks for the real world insight on this focuser.
I hope we can see it when you're done!
Nice job great idea about one hole cutter inside the other to.
Glad you liked it!
Nice job!! That looks like quite the process!!
Love your commitment. It really is inspiring even though I’d never try it myself since I have no workshop and tools.
Well most of it was done in my front room
@@whyf16uy I guess not the bandsaw though? Anyhow, good job. I just bought a second hand 10:1 dual crayford for my Star Travel 120 for £55. Good deal I thought. Haven’t fitted it yet however.
I bought a C6-N for $125 at a Pawn shop and the mirror was micro-scratched from being cleaned with a paper towel it also came with a 2x Tele Vue Barlow. I sent the mirror off to be re-aluminized during a sale at Optical Wave Laboratories. They tested my mirror and said they could improve it to at least .95 Strehl and 1/10th wave. I got it back at .98 Strehl and 1/12th wave, it was near perfect to my rookie eyes. My 1.25 R&P focuser had to go. I bought a 2" PMI Crayford focuser with dual speeds. I've had guys in my astronomy club say it was as good as their 8" scopes were insofar as clarity and brightness. edit, OWL no longer performs those services btw, didn't make money and optical engineer who refigured my mirror left for better pay.
That 2" focuser with 2" eyepieces is something else and I bought an Apo 2" Luminos 2.5x Barlow to double-duty my 2" eyepieces. I've been offered $1000 for the old C6-N scope. Heck with the focuser I have near $800 into it, but I can see the Crab Nebula with it, no filters. On the brighter globular clusters it is great with the Omega Centauri Cluster filling up the eyepiece view. I live at 32 degrees latitude so I get good views of much of the Southern sky in the summer.
Nice. We live the upgrade life.
I paused, liked, and subbed in the first 7 seconds! 😆
Thanks that's awesome
