He's based directly on both of them, Pommy describes himself as a mimic which is very similar to Kirby conceptually and explains why he has so many forms. Later games give Pommy inherent Electric abilities, so thats when the Pikachu part factors in aside from his ears.
Was very lucky to find a copy of this for about $62. Expensive price for me personally, but being the first time I have ever seen the cartridge under $100, I had to pick it up before somebody else did. This game is non negotiable in my collection. Was the single most rented game of my childhood. I had to pick it up one day.
I’m glad nowadays people even recreate the cartridges themselves with the sticker especially considering this and many other games never released to europe. So sad since i loved the first entry that i couldnt get this as a child.
My childhood... This is hands down my favorite Bomberman game! Was planning on buying the first one back in the day after renting it, but EB didn't have it. So I decided to take The Second Attack home! Was not disappointed. Story was awesome, and Multiplayer battles got intense on Saturday nights! Glad to still have my copy after all this time, never getting rid of it. Prices are ridiculously high, but you can't put a price on memories.
If you don't mind me asking, do you remember how much you paid for it back in the day? Seeing as it's crazy expensive now. I paid $70 for mine in 2013, and to me it's worth every penny.
$70 is pretty good considering I've seen them going for $100+ nowadays. The sticker on the back of my carts ripped and faded so i can't give you a exact price, but I bought my copy around 2003 or 2004 when N64 games were getting pretty cheap. I think I paid $10 to $12 for it used. If only we had those prices today lol.
Wow, that's incredible. I'm sure it'll continue to go up (as game prices always do) and one day we'll be looking back at how cheap $115 was for this game way back in 2017.
I absolutely adored this game as a kid. I remember renting it from Hollywood Video back in the day all the time. When I finally got it as an adult, I wasn't disappointed. Something about the first game will always be more nostalgic for me though
Oh yeah, I remember Hollywood Video rental stores and Blockbuster video stores. They were all over Utah County up until the early 2010s when they shut down. Sadly, I cannot go back to those awesome 1980s, 1990s, 2000s that I lived through as a kid, teenager and young adult unless I can get a Time Travel ability like in A Christmas Carol to view it only.
Maybe I missed you mentioning it (and I know it's been 5 years), but why didn't you use the different bomb types? You used fire bombs throughout. Enemies have resistances or even immunities to some elements and weaknesses to others, and the different explosion shapes and effects are really cool. Seems odd to leave it out of the review.
Considering the n64 was on its way out when second attack came out my friend this game looks good in terms of graphics and gameplay im happy i was able to pick this game up.
these n64 bomberman games always looked like the coolest of the bomberman games to me. I need to pick up a copy of them eventually but this one is super expensive now days.
This game here is my childhood, my all time favorite Bomberman game for any system, one of my favorite N64 titles, I love everything about it. I don't think any Bomberman game compares to what they pulled off here, and I say that as a huge fan of the series who has played every Bomberman game from the NES to the GameCube.
I live in the US, and I had Bomberman 64 and played it a lot, but I never knew a sequel existed until about a decade after the N64 era ended. Now, the game is so rare it's worth over $100.
Yup. Hero may have had the better soundtrack and it's my sister's favorite Bomberman, but I like Second Attack better. I was hyped through the whole development process when it was in development, I first played this on the christmas of 2001 and I loved it. I didn't like Pommy but I loved this game. I wanna see a Switch sequel to it with the first 64's camera controls and puzzle elements and maybe more Hero like elements to the soundtrack.
This might be my favorite Bomberman game. Although I love all of the N64 ones. The soundtrack was overall quite wonderful. I think the same person who composed the music for Chrono Trigger worked on this. The single player was pretty solid! I enjoy the story and Pommy was a fun addition to the game. Also the elemental bombs were super cool! My friend and I used to play co-op on this fairly often. It was less challenging overall than 64, but there were some parts that I found to be really frustrating. I would get stuck in a few of the gravity generator rooms, because the camera wasn't obvious enough with where certain things were located, in my opinion. Certain enemies could actually mess with your control and cause you to fall off the level and die. Thank goodness they did away with the gold card collecting. It might be in my top 10 N64 games.
You should look into Rocket the Robot on Wheels. Developed by Sucker Punch it has a physics system that was ahead of it's time and a cool jazz inspired soundtrack. Also I love your videos I look forward to the next one keep it up!!!
I've been wanting for this review! My favorite traditional N64 Bomberman, so many memories! It was easier than Bomberman 64, but the different bomb types, multiplayer, Pommy evolution, etc kept me entertained for hours. Hero was fun, but that was orginally a Bonk game that was reskinned and re-worked. Didn't have that Bomberman feel.
N64 Glenn Plant, I still love Hero, but certain thing like collecting the bombs to unlock the true ending, and a lot of little things knock it down for me; although Redial will forever be my favorite Bomberman track.
Pommy does become pretty useful if you do keep investing in him. Eventually he'll be able to do tons of damage which helps to clear rooms of normal enemies while you focus on puzzles and other things. I also disagree on the multiplayer, on paper all the modes are great, but having cross shaped bombs in a 3d environment doesn't work well at all in my experience.
Regarding pommy: his later transformations are super strong and have much better AI. The knight pommy with the axe just goes ham and kills basically everything.
Never got this game as a kid but i remember seeing it in some rental shops. Also, It looks great without the SD blur too. I will definitely get a copy one day when i have extra money. Thanks for the review!
Wearing a full set of some custom clothes gave the player free items in matches too actually. golden is basically the story mode's guardian armor for example
I thought it was just, arm pieces gave permanent free Power Glove and leg pieces gave permanent free Kick, and while the Guardian Armor *is* the story mode equivalent of Customs, Custom head and body didn't seem to do anything... but either way, don't forget you needed a Memory Pak to even use Customs in Battle, which made it a weird, early version of imbalancing DLC.
Interesting. I hadn't seen this one in action before. I wasn't a big fan of the original for its large departure in play style compared to the prior classic Bomberman games. This one however seems like it's more of a hybrid of the old style with the new and as a result looks more appealing to me. I may give it a try.
The Bomberman Arcade 64 is very special to me but the adventure games like this one are my favorites. The original 64 one being at the top if I had to choose
Great review, I actually like Pommy though, he's unfortunately useless in his first form, shame because it's my favorite, but he becomes decent in his level 2 forms, good in his level 3 forms, and excellent in level 4 forms. I may have gotten more out of him though since I played the game in co-op with another person. I only dream we'll get a game that takes the best aspects of this game and the original Bomberman 64 and puts them together for one awesome title, but with the franchise under Konami atm thats not likely. You should try Bomberman Generation and it's follow-up Bomberman Jetters on the gamecube both are good times with the former being one of the best Bomberman games period imo, Generation's Adventure mode plays like a streamlined version of the original 64, it kind of bugs you at first especially since Dr.Ein keeps backseat gaming for you throughout areas, but the more you play it the more you learn to appreciate the game's design and it really starts to come into it's own, hard to explain properly.
There was going to be a spiritual successor to this for the DS I believe, with co-op mode, elemental bombs, story and dialogue, etc. But then Konami bought Hudson and the series died :'(
Lets see. Yup I did let my sister play the game with me having her play as pommy she eventually got bored because the camera didn't always show her on the screen, her fault not mine >XD. I loved when my pommy eventually became a Knight and still acted like the biggest coward when boss fights came up, but at least now it could damage stuff . . . if I gave it 5 years to chase and swing that large sword. But that was what the Evo down or w/e it is called was for. Surprised you didn't mention how the story actually has two endings depending on how a certain fight goes and if you got all the elemental stones or not. One thing I didn't like about the game was the amount of times I ended up dying and then had to redo THE ENTIRE FRICKIN LEVEL or maybe not the entire level but I do believe you go back to the start, I think with everything still done. I remember beating Mihaele and then dying in the lava room afterwords because my ice bombs blast radius was too big and proceeded to slowly kill me. I was kinda disappointed there was a lack non-humanoid enemies the closest it ever got was the 'final' boss and the FINAL boss; but even they still had a human like appearance. Overall I did enjoy the game but it wasn't something I went back to that often, if at all, after I fully completed it. Mainly because my friends liked Bomberman 64's multiplayer more, can't say I agreed.
yeah its always a tough one when you have friends who prefer one multiplayer and you prefer another - i think the speed of BM64 as opposed to this versions multiplayer really appealed to a wider audience
Bomberman 64: The Second Attack is pretty expensive in NA. I was lucky enough to get a copy of my own over a year ago before it shot up majorly in price! It goes for around $350 to $400 loose(or 270.75 Pound sterling to 309.43 Pound sterling)! Not cheap here by any means. I would assume not a whole lot of cartridges of that game were manufactured and produced; just a one time print run here I believe! But I would assume it's alot cheaper in Japan though as a lot of Japanese versions of games in general tend to be alot of the time.
Poppy is honestly awesome later on. It can start doing damage, making really challenging rooms, simple with a good second player. Granted the AI is not that helpful, but still. Poppy would have been a huge misstep if not in the game.
...and Pommy can't be killed, only stunned or respawned. Player 2 Pommy can also pick up most items, and even if you're alone, you can throw CPU Pommy into an item, then temporarily switch his control to P2 and back again.
You can now play Bomberman 64: The Second Attack on Raspberry Pi 4 console. To the Bomberman fans and N64 Glenn Plant. You're probably aware of how ridiculously expensive and rare Bomberman 64 sequel cartridge is on the Amazon, Ebay market. Did you know that you can now play it on the Raspberry Pi 4 console with the SD Card RetroArch, Retropie which includes Bomberman 64 sequel. When Bomberman 64 and Bomberman Hero came out on the Nintendo Wii and Wii U console I was excited and hoped that Hudson would put Bomberman 64: The Second Attack on the Wii U virtual console. Sadly they never did and there's no announcement for it getting ported on the Nintendo Switch. So as for the performance of Bomberman 64: The Second Attack on the Raspberry Pi 4, I'm kind of feel mixed and frustrated because sometimes the game glitches and my joystick doesn't respond and the game suffers from severe slowdowns and once in a while the game crashes. I'm sad I wasn't ever able to get the official N64 cartridge like I was with Bomberman 64, Bomberman Hero. You can play it on Raspberry Pi 4. But it doesn't always work perfectly.
There are a number of small inaccuracies (but you review a ton of games so it's understandable), but one note is, King & Knights doesn't make a player the King; it's the _team battle_ mode for 2v2 or 1v3 (or 1v2), where each team has a set number of lives (1, 3, or 5) and killing an opponent will cost them one life, but killing their King will cost them three lives. The Kings were static NPCs that you can pick up and carry or throw to safety (or death), much like a stunned opponent, and the first _Bomberman 64_ had Team Battle as a second mode which was very similar, but instead of a king, it was a jewel, I don't think it could be lifted (only destroyed), and players' deaths didn't count against their team.
It’s a tragic shame this game never got any rerelease’s on modern consoles making it a hidden time capsule gem 💎. Especially I really want to try this game out since I enjoyed the previous 1st game.
I prefered the first one to this. I thought the gameplay was slow. Definitely not worth the price it goes for now. Its one of those games you should emulate first to see if you like it before buying
Still haven't gotten this game, it's one of the last for my N64 collection. It sure looks amazing tho, I love the other Bomberman titels. Btw Glenn, how are you doing? These are weird times, so I hope you can stay positive, healthy and calm. I wish those things to everyone really
I’m all good thanks, going stir crazy with the lockdown but playing cod warzone with friends to kill then time in between my Normal job which I’m doing from home. Hope you’re doing well too
@@n64glennplant Well, you have a job atleast, that's something :) I am slowley doing fine. I first had a bacteria in m stomach, when that went away, I build off medicine and then got Corona :s That was a month ago, I am feeling way better now, but the doctor suspects I have galstones. Anyhow, besides that, I am doing great ;D Reading books again and watching stuff about succesfull and wealthy people
hey glenn, love your reviews. im surprised though that you havent reviewed mario 64 or zelda ocarina of time. Do you have any plans to? would love to hear your thoughts on them :) keep up the good work!
You forgot to bring up that this game is prohibitively expensive, the first bomberman is much more accessible and won't break the bank!! Forget this game guys, not worth the asking price of usually around 150 USD.
+Stuff Done Right it's one of those tough situations where although I don't like emulation personally I can see why some may feel that's the only way to go for games such as this
I got really lucky and found a copy of this for $60. Most I've ever spent on an N64 game, but it was absolutely worth it, this is singlehandedly my most rented game of my childhood. Also, this is one of those games that just does not run in an emulator very well. You really need the cartridge to play.
I never played this one nor Hero for some reason. I rather enjoyed the first Bomberman 64 quite a lot, and also remember some of the frustrations to go with it. My first foray into the Bomberman world was the crossover Wario/Bomberman title on the GB. I don't remember the name, but I played it a ton and my interest in the series grew from Bomberman's first outing on the N64. Don't know why I never picked this one up, but I believe I now will. On a side note, the Bomberman game that came out on the XB360 almost killed the franchise. It was awful. Glad to see the Switch bring it back to it's roots
@@n64glennplant Whats crazy is, at the time I was so young and just in a bomberman phase that I bought the game thinking it was Hero. What a pleasant surprise it was to find out that it was a lesser known but arguably better game
Well I grew up playing Bomberman 64 and Bomberman hero I've never ever play Bomberman the second attack I just played it on the emulator a couple days ago it is pretty cool but it's frustrating playing it on the emulator cuz the joystick will stop working and making it so I can only move up or down and I have to use the d-pad which makes it harder when you go into a room with a diagonal camera angle and some of the object you destroy to get items will be invisible I am having fun with it I just wish the emulator can play it better
This is one of the more expensive and rare N64 games out there. I'd LOVE to have a copy of this and will probably get one eventually, at least I hope. The price of a lot of N64 games has been dropping recently, with the onslaught of reproduction carts invading eBay... The only Bomberman game I had as a kid was "Bomberman Hero" and I wasn't the biggest fan of it. It wasn't that the game played bad or anything. It was a little difficult for me at the time but I did get pretty far into it (never beat the "final" boss). The thing that made me not like it that much was Bomberman had a voice that made him sound like a girl when he got hit by anything...and for some reason that just turned me off of the game. It doesn't bother me a ton now that i'm older, but I just find it odd that something so insignificant could turn me off to a game like it did...
I have yet to get the US version of this game. I have the Japanese version which is playable but I want to read the text as I go thru... Price is still pretty high; I'm going to have to do some auction sniping haha
Dude everything about this bomber man game is perfect and unfortunately made me disappointed in every other one after. Altho I like them all but 2ed attack was the best easy .well bomber man hero was cool to with the jump lol
I'm surprised you said this was your favorite multiplayer bomberman, as the Sega Saturn Bomberman is usually stated as being the best for multiplayer. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
This game is gonna be a pain in the ass to get I love the Bomberman Series so much they are hard yet fun. But i will one day same money for it what pisses me off is people on ebay try to use reproduction carts im sorry i only want authentic copies
I got it a couple years ago before it sky rocketed and promptly traded it back in. It just felt slow and kind of boring to me. Maybe should have given it a bit more of a chance(at worst, would have been nice to make a couple bucks off it), but considering it was still 3 times the price of Bomberman 64, I think I'd rather have that game.
I think I was, like, 14 or 15 when this came out. Got it for $20 or less from a Electronics Boutique/Gamestop that was desperate to get rid of their N64 games at the time; picked it up with a memory card in some sort of Gamestop blister pack. They packaged a lot of their N64 games like that at the time (I also remember seeing Neo Geo Pocket Colors bundled with games like that, also on clearance, and curse myself to this day for not picking one up like that), and I remember getting this along with a few other games, like Duke Nukem Zero Hour and Goemon's Great Adventure (now THAT'S a classic, right there! Hope you get to that one eventually; its so fantastic). I found 2nd Attack a bit boring, tbh. I do remember enjoying it enough with my sister, but I never felt compelled to even finish it. Its real slow-paced, both because of Bomberman's walk speed and the slower pace of the design, not to mention the lackluster frame rate. It was hard to feel too engaged in the Adventure Mode for me. I never picked up B64 back in the day either - I only actually played that one relatively recently via the Virtual Console - and so Second Attack represents my only legit N64 Bomberman experience. I mostly remember being baffled back then as to why it looked worse than Bomberman 64, and I stick to that opinion, though your point about the engine probably explains it. Don't get me wrong; the artists were reaching for an improved look, and the textures & models ARE more detailed (especially Bomberman, who has an actual model now instead of being a collection of sphere sprites), but everything runs slow and just has this murky, muddy, blurry look that was super disappointing to see on the N64 in 1999 or 2000 or whatever. The higher quality assets coupled with the older tech just create too many problems and I didn't dig its look. It definitely needed a newer, or more optimized engine, as well as another pass or 2 with regards to color balance and contrast. Compared to Bomberman 64, which admittedly has less detailed textures, but looks "cleaner" because they're simpler (not to mention boasts a more vibrant color palette), Second Attack definitely looks worse in my opinion. Its almost like comparing Sonic Adventure to Shadow the Hedgehog; there's just a muddy dark grittiness to too many of the visuals in Second Attack. Like, look at the dirty Subway and City areas at 4:34 and 4:51 in your video - its just weird to see in a Bomberman game. I did really appreciate the cinematic camera angles though; framing the action like every screen was a diorama or whatever. It made it really playable. Playing Bomberman 64 on the Wii U proved that game's free-rotating camera to be a bit of a nightmare by comparison. I do remember really digging the multiplayer though; you're right about that! Playing Bomberman 64 on the Virtual Console, and seeing this review, did make me want to replay Second Attack and give it another shot though. My sis has got the N64 these days though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 'Nother great N64 review, man! Thanks for the shot of nostalgia! Your vids always rule (^v^)
It’s kind of like saying we’re done for today but I hope we will speak again soon. It was also a popular way that radio shows were ended back in the day 👍
the sidekick looks like the lovechild of Kirby and a Pikachu

+Theme and Friends Music Channel it's been on my to do list for a while
Hey Glenn Plant, you should review Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon and Goemon's Great Adventure because they are some of the best N64 games out there.

I love rocket robot on wheels it's one of my favorites on the system and easily one the best platformers for the N64 an extremely underrated game

Yeah the price continued to soar
I'm guessing someone already told you this, but Second Attack WAS the last Bomberman game on the console. Bomberman Hero came before this one.
+Sonicisbadazz of the 4 bomberman N64 games hero is my fav, in fact I’m editing the video now
Poppy is honestly awesome later on.
I saw this for sale the other day at the arcade however the only bomberman game I like is hero on n64
Same thing with Snowboard Kids 2.
A damn shame this game is so rare and expensive, it looks well good.
Konami needs to re-release this game on Nintendo Switch Online soon. This might be an opportunity for a PAL release!
Got sent by Pan Pizza. Looks like you're a cool channel :)
what is pan pizza? im confused but it sounds delicious haha
N64 Glenn Plant He’s a UA-camr who does cartoon reviews. He likes a lot of stuff from the 2000s and he recommended your channel on his Tumblr
Too bad this was never published in PAL region....much more fun than the first part!
Yeah I think so too
Great review😎
Never knew there was a second Bomberman game on the N64.
There’s 4 in total 👍
One is a japanese exclusive though.
I prefered the first one to this. I thought the gameplay was slow. Definitely not worth the price it goes for now. Its one of those games you should emulate first to see if you like it before buying
yeah the rarity really doesn't help these days because the price is insane for what the game is
Still haven't gotten this game, it's one of the last for my N64 collection.
Hope you’re doing well too
@@n64glennplant Well, you have a job atleast, that's something :)
I am slowley doing fine.
I first had a bacteria in m stomach, when that went away, I build off medicine and then got Corona :s
That was a month ago, I am feeling way better now, but the doctor suspects I have galstones.
Anyhow, besides that, I am doing great ;D
Reading books again and watching stuff about succesfull and wealthy people
Mathinus Wolters my step dad had covid too so I know how bad it can be so stay indoors and away from other people with nasty germs ga
@@n64glennplant Don't worry, I go to great lengths to protect myself and others ;)
I hope your stepdad recovers swiftly
Hey Glenn first of all I love your content and second of all did you know there's gonna be a next gen N64 controller?!
+ライガー yup I haven't backed it myself though
hey glenn, love your reviews. im surprised though that you havent reviewed mario 64 or zelda ocarina of time. Do you have any plans to? would love to hear your thoughts on them :) keep up the good work!
Specialized media... always suspicious .
Good work man
You forgot to bring up that this game is prohibitively expensive, the first bomberman is much more accessible and won't break the bank!!
Hmmmm, might pick this one up if I get the chance
+gamers in a container let me know how you like it if you do
N64 Glenn Plant will do!
+mike beck hero has perhaps the best soundtrack from any hudson game
Bought this from EB games around 2001 for 30 something bucks. Regret letting it and the lot of my 64 games go in highschool some yrs later smh
Hindsight is a wonderful thing right
@@n64glennplant Whats crazy is, at the time I was so young and just in a bomberman phase that I bought the game thinking it was Hero.
+timmer919hep yeah this is one which seems to keep rising
I have yet to get the US version of this game. I have the Japanese version which is playable but I want to read the text as I go thru... Price is still pretty high; I'm going to have to do some auction sniping haha
+71dembones yeah it's expensive considering
Dude everything about this bomber man game is perfect and unfortunately made me disappointed in every other one after. Altho I like them all but 2ed attack was the best easy .well bomber man hero was cool to with the jump lol
I'm surprised you said this was your favorite multiplayer bomberman, as the Sega Saturn Bomberman is usually stated as being the best for multiplayer. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Had Bomberman on Saturn back in the day but didn’t really do gaming then with anyone aside from my bro so only 2 player
This game is gonna be a pain in the ass to get
I love the Bomberman Series so much
they are hard yet fun. But i will one day same money for it
what pisses me off is people on ebay try to use reproduction carts
im sorry i only want authentic copies
Looks like I'm adding this to the collection and explain to my GF why paid so much for a game
haha the bombrman games are surprisingly solid on n64 I think
THE BEST BOMBERMAN
You said this wasn't the last Bomberman game on the console?
I got it a couple years ago before it sky rocketed and promptly traded it back in. It just felt slow and kind of boring to me. Maybe should have given it a bit more of a chance(at worst, would have been nice to make a couple bucks off it), but considering it was still 3 times the price of Bomberman 64, I think I'd rather have that game.
I have an extra cartridge if bomberman 64 the second attack. Anyone want to buy it?
You may be better off posting on the Facebook page…. 💪🏼
@@n64glennplant Which facebook page? Thanks
My sis has got the N64 these days though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
'Nother great N64 review, man! Thanks for the shot of nostalgia! Your vids always rule (^v^)
This game must have cost you a lot
Too damn expensive to try now.
Repro carts of this have become common and sell for $20.
Still holding on to my original copy though :) best n64 game.
did you really just called this game EASY???? The other bomberman's are a breeze compared to this one. This one is frustratingly HARD.
+Gustavo CVE you think so? I thought bomberman 64 was at least twice as hard as this
Fucking Scalpers I swear to god if I don’t get this game before I die my life will not be complete!!!!!
"...and until next time..." what? until next time what? Why do all your videos finish with a half finished sentence?
It’s a british saying
What does it mean? Oh, love your videos btw. You are doing brilliant work. But the sentence is...
It’s kind of like saying we’re done for today but I hope we will speak again soon. It was also a popular way that radio shows were ended back in the day 👍
