+TheBurbski You can also (permanently) unlock the extra stages if you get all the 120 Gold Cards (If you think it's only 100, just get them and you will then find other 20) on Adventure mode.
Bomberman 64 was a game I always loved as a kid but don't fully appreciate until I was older. I think it has aged really well as the collection of all the gold cards is quite challenging. While I do agree the bosses are easy on their own, beating them and getting all of tier gold cards is much more challenging and fun as well. Also the secret world for unlocking all the gold cards is ridiculously tough! This game really earned that good old defunct KA rating
exactly. also the really advanced bomb moves are mind blowing and i think the best way to play the game is to really just mess around in any stage with remotecontrolled bombs. jumping, high and far, bouning around. amazing.
This is my personal favorite when it comes to the Nintendo 64, or the Bomberman series altogether. The multiplayer featured in this game features 3-d movement not restricted by a grid of panels like most Bomberman games, and it proves to be much funner.
@@NaOkii yeah they told me to go to the bottom part of the map, that was enough for me to figure it out. I was probably like 8 or something at the time.
One of my favourite on the system ! You didn't mention one of the great aspects : the costumes ! In each level you can unlock costume parts for the multiplayer mode, allowing you to custom your bomberman ! Mine looked like a dragon, I was proud !
a little late to the party here, but this is easily in my top 5 N64 games. Loved the single player and loved the multiplayer, especially the pyramid level when it began to sink. I collected all the gold cards and 100%'d it in under 3 hours to get the special gold armour in multiplayer and amazed my pals, plus I couldn't believe the secret ending with that huge twist... my jaw literally hit the floor...And that final fight where Sirius turns up!? loved it.
This game was one of the most rented games for my N64 days, i loved this game so much at the time. Im considering picking it up online right now actually. Great Review as always my friend!
I think the reason why Bomberman 64 was compared to Mario 64 was because of the Gold card scavenger hunt in the game being somewhat similar to collecting Stars throughout the levels. Besides you didn't mention that collecting all the gold cards in BM 64 reveals a huge plot twist, unlocks a new stage and shows the REAL final in game boss, which even included a bonus blooper reel in the ending.credits.. To me this game is a hidden gem for the N64. Difficult to some degree but actually enjoyable.
Love this game. Spent countless hours playing it multiplayer. I remember when we rented it, me and my stepdad played it until 7am. We only noticed the time when we saw it was light outside.
I bought this game second hand for 5 bucks when it came out and really enjoyed. It was definitely an awesome party game when you got 4 player going. I'd play with my family and friends and we would just laugh our heads off at all the craziness that occurred.
This game has always been so special to me. I got Bomberman 64 and Chameleon Twist on Christmas 1997. They aren't the greatest games ever made, but they have such a special place in my heart, particularly Bomberman 64. It holds up really well today, and the multiplayer with bots is still very enjoyable. But it's always been the soundtrack that has been so influential in my gaming life. This soundtrack and star soldier vanishing earth's soundtrack are so nostalgic for me. Hudson Soft was incredible in the Nintendo 64 era. Thanks for this wonderful review Glenn!
Everett Armstrong and thank you for watching! i did star soldier a year ago i think so i dig that too! ill do chameleon twist 1 and 2 when i get around to doing a reptile themed month :) hah
My friend had this. He hadn't cleared this yet when I was at his place in 2004. We played trough the last world and got to see the epic N64 era credits. You know, those where you get to see all the levels you've played trough and maybe see some secrets you've missed.
i feel like puzzle games and bomberman style games can't really have sequels. There is just a set way to play it and changing it creates an entirely different game. Its like trying change the way math is done... you can't its just math, you do it one way and thats it.
i just remember how tricky was for me do those 3 bombs jumps... in a first glace i didn´t know what to do , so i start mashin button until i jumped high randomly.... eureka!
One of the two games I got when I was given my N64 for Christmas by my parents, Mortal Kombat Trilogy being the other. My platforming debut as well. I was never able to complete this game sadly. The giant fish and the lava level were the only ones I could never beat. I still have my copy of Bomberman 64, but I mainly play it for reminiscing nowadays. The will to really sit down and try to beat it has gone.
Bomberman Hero was, according to rumors, actually supposed to be a Bonk's Adventure follow-up, which they decided to make into a Bomberman game because of Bomberman's popularity. While Bomberman Hero has its issues, it still looks quite good and has incredibly catchy music. Bomberman 64: The Second Attack is really the pinnacle of 3D Bomberman games imo. Great profile picture btw. Air Zonk is one of the coolest characters in video games!
This was one of my first N64 games. Even to this day I've never played the single player campaign long enough to beat it, but I've played the multiplayer battle mode countless times with friends and every now and then we still gathher around for a few matches. I remember the visuals looking very nice for an early release title and really captivating me and the music really stands out. So much so, that, even though I never listen to the soundtrack, I can still clearly remember the World 1 theme music.
I played the multiplayer of this once and didn't enjoy it as much as older titles, I never even saw the single player mode until watching this and it looks a lot more fun than I thought. I might have to give it another try.
This was one of the three original N64 games I received on the Christmas of 1997 along side Shadows of the Empire and Star Fox 64. I always liked how the main bad guys were named after stars. I loved the soundtrack to; it was extremely catchy. This game was pretty easy and short in hind sight for a puzzle/platform title even when you 100% it but it had a lot of personality and I still enjoy playing the multiplayer to this day. Great memories....
***** I like how you have to get all the gold cards to unlock the last secret level for the true ending. It gives it a little more replay ability but yeah otherwise it's super short. It was an early N64 title though so I guess it can be overlooked....
I used to play this game so much, back in the day. Always found it to be tough, as a kid. The songs in the bomberman games were always a big highlight, because they were so catchy xD
I remember going to the video rental store and saw this game and Bomberman Hero on the shelf. I decided to pick up the former, thinking that Hero was a direct sequel to the first game and I wanted to start from the beginning. Playing through this title, I was just amazed with how well done everything was. That is, until I got stuck on the 3rd level of the White Glacier stage and couldn't figure out how to get to the switch lol. I ordered the game 10 years later and it's a nice game to pick up every once and a while.Bomberman Hero doesn't even compare and the Second Attack just doesn't come close.
I've never once played this game before but man do both the graphics and visuals just look amazing in this game!! Even though the bosses end too quickly, I would still enjoy having boss battles whether they are a challenge or not all because I like to rush through boss battles and then go back to the game and play it normally until the next battle comes later on in the game.
I was never able to beat this in terms of getting the gold cards and reaching the secret world. It's on my list of games to beat on the N64 along with Jet Force Gemini and the Banjo games.
I recently picked this up at my retro game store game x change for 12.99.Haven't played it yet was wondering if it would play like the original but this goes far from what i expected.Cannot wait to play this.
I bought this a while back but gave up on it really quickly as it seemed a bit tedious. After your review I'm going to give it another try. I can't wait to see your review of Bomberman Hero.
Though I was old enough to play the original Bomber Man when it came out, I ender up skipping over it. I bought the N64 version on release day, and went in completely blind. Top to bottom one of my favorite games on the console. Played the multi-player many times, but absolutely LOVED the single player/story mode. Great game!
it was one of the first 3d games i ever played so i was completely receptive to its concepts not think it should be like "this game" or "that game", it was super awesome
A chunk of my childhood. Riiight, here. My sister was always a huge Bomberman fangirl enough to make her own fan comic she'd read to me, I too was heavily into Bomberman, and the sequel to this game is my favorite of the series. Since my real life birth name really is Orion, I always wanted to see the character in this game orion turn good like Regulus. Who is one of my favorite characters in the series.
This is a game that I used to rent out a lot as a kid, but I'm not sure I ever really "got per say. I treated it a lot more like an adventure sort of game, really missing out on the cues of calling to puzzle solving. Don't think I ever faced a boss, just went between levels and tried to reveal as much as I could. There was still an impact though, enough for me to remember it and get it in my new collecting days. Also to grossly covet Second Attack. Want so bad ;_; I agree in that the game isn't all that fluid, but I think lingering on the point of the platforming elements was a bit much for this review. You were trying to make a point, but I find the platforming to be very minimal by actual platforming standards. Really the stand out of the game is the world and the kookie situations therein. It's a game that's incredibly creative, and despite its outward appearance, is not just a "kid's game".
@@n64glennplant I've asked before but I'll do it again your so damn good at reviews, would you ever consider reviewing other Nintendo games or even other non Nintendo games
Great review, I got this after having great fun on the SNES Bomberman games. Still I did prefer Saturn Bomberman. This game did come up short in many ways but its multiplayer and 3D environments made a exciting change. On the games title screen if you pressed start quick enough it unlocked a special battle arena. Of course if you have a turbo pad you can save on the pain.
I enjoyed this game. It's the best of the series . By far. The story and unique gameplay will forever remain in my head. I played it young and passed it on my own. I hate puzzle games I was into the charecter design. The bosses were actually hard shit... Lol... But yea literally been looking at all the games I passed by that i enjoyed. See how other analytics summarize it
Hey weird question for bomberman aficionados; Which bomberman game has the big circular overworld type are and you enter like... tunneps to fight the bosses (the bosses look like the guys from the start of this video). It could be this game but I cant see anything I remember from it.
+N64 Glenn Plant Hey Glenn! Another Great review on a fantastic game in one of my favorite series! I'm a little bit obsessed with bomberman and it shows in my collection :P I put a lot of time into this game. The multiplayer is good but the SNES ones are better IMO The japan exclusive "Arcade" game is very fun as well.
I didn't pick this game up because I was listening to the reviews that called the game average or not good but you know what I wish I didn't listen to the reviews because I love these quirky light hearted games. These were around a lot in those days but games feel a whole lot more serious these days
God i didnt think this game was easy at all when i was a kid. to be fair i was a kid. I find it crazy though how well memories of this game stick with me all these years later though.
Glenn Plant, just do Mario Golf already! I've been waiting what feels like forever for you do cover this game. PLEASE tell me that you'll cover it (and possibly the other 2 Mario Party games) some time this month. :(
I am sad now. :( On a more related note, of the 2 Bomberman games I own for the 64, I prefer Bomberman Hero just because you actually have a health bar in that one as opposed to dieing from basically 1 bomb blast in B64.
never played it i get mixed up with which n64 bombermans are good and which people dislike, i thought this usually gets criticized but it looks pretty fun and abit diffrent form the norm
I ‘Glenn plant’ myself when I wanna add to my collection and seek out a recommendation So I watched this video And being a fan of the megabomberman on the megadrive I figured despite some of the negatives it looks pretty darn fun So the day before heading into Romford to seek in my retro shop of choice I realised as I was playing through body harvest that there..in my box of about 50 n64 titles was this very game I remembered then that I’d borrowed it in year 8 (so 98 lol) along with Mario kart 64 and it fell by the wayside and the guy who lent me it obviously had no love for it RESULT
I had 'beaten' the game for like a month then a new kid showed up at school we got along quite well and found out he liked Bomberman as well so during recess we would pretend we were Bombermen. Wasn't til a few days later he found out I didn't even know about the Rainbow Palace he then told me how to access it. Boy did that become annoying since I don't know all the tricks you apparently know like that jump bomb stun. Now for my question when are you going to do Bomberman Hero or Bomberman The Second Attack?
I got this one a couple of years back at a yard sale for $3US, and I played the Single player game, and while it's alright, it's nothing special for me, but it does give me, my g/f, and her daughter another decent multiplayer game for the system, so that's a good thing. :-)
***** blowing yourself up to reach ledges etc is something you need to learn in the game, its not necessary but can save you a whole ton of time when you get good at it
so I'm years late but I hear what you say and while I don't think you're wrong I think you are missing a point. I agree that the bosses, once you know what you are doing, can be way too easy. but at the same time I think that's one of the big things about this game. once you know how it works you can push yourself for the optional gold cards, getting all 100 in the base 5 worlds unlocking a 6th. and there's another 20 in there and h'oh boy I hope you like challening puzzle platformin with bombs. You can easily beat this game and get the normal ending without trying. but the gold cards are where the real challenge comes into play. and those aren't as easy to get. beating the bosses by breaking certain parts of them without killing them for instance.
I thought this game was going to be like Mario 64 and really disliked it because it wasn't back when it came out. I've really enjoyed other Bomberman games since then like 93/94 on the Wii VC, Saturn Bomberman, Generations on the Gamecube, and several on the GBC/GBA but haven't gone back to this one yet(picked up Hero recently but haven't played it yet). Since I've been collecting for my N64 again this is pretty high on the list to look out for along with Road Rash. Thankfully my horizons opened up a lot by the time I played Silicon Valley, loved that game.
I was all about finding the different kinds of armors ! that big ? question mark ? always got me thinking what it could be and that I had to have it :) then play with matching skins in multiplayer. I'm still trying to get them all :/
Was excited to hear this game was coming out and bought it upon release. Sadly though I didnt like it very much. If you want to play a good bomberman game get Super Bomberman 2 on SNES. I still play that game today and my kids like it too. 3D isnt always better
I got a Japanese copy of this back in the day, absolutely hated the multiplayer. Even though I loved the SNES versions. But I never gave the single player much time, possibly as it was all in Japanese.
***** i can imagine anyone expecting this to blow the snes multiplayer away would have been as dissipated as i was! the single player game it good, slow at times but in japanese yeah you'd have no chance!
FUN FACT: If you mash the start button at the opening screen you will hear a sound, unlocking 3 additional multiplayer maps!
Everett Armstrong bumping that right up!

Did you know about that already, Glenn?
Are the only the maps less barren? From what I've seen I don't think I'd like the multiplayer in this much because the maps look kinda boring.

This game did come up short in many ways but its multiplayer and 3D environments made a exciting change. On the games title screen if you pressed start quick enough it unlocked a special battle arena. Of course if you have a turbo pad you can save on the pain.
Marc M i vote saturn bomberman for multiplayer too
Great channel! Keep up the good work. Would you do Bomberman Hero sometime?
this was the first video game I ever played.
2nd N64 game i ever owned and I loved it! great review
***** thank you :)
What about bomberman hero? The soundtrack alone in that game is legend. "Redial" ftw
has an awesome soundtrack - one of the best on the console for pure listening pleasure IMO
I loved this game.
See how other analytics summarize it
I agree the bosses and puzzles are quite unfair.
Definitely up there with Mario Kart 64 when it comes to 4 player action
One of my favorite games on the system.
The hidden final episode in the game was fucking brutal. I still don't know how I managed to beat it.
Hey weird question for bomberman aficionados;
Which bomberman game has the big circular overworld type are and you enter like... tunneps to fight the bosses (the bosses look like the guys from the start of this video). It could be this game but I cant see anything I remember from it.
+N64 Glenn Plant Hey Glenn! Another Great review on a fantastic game in one of my favorite series! I'm a little bit obsessed with bomberman and it shows in my collection :P I put a lot of time into this game. The multiplayer is good but the SNES ones are better IMO
The japan exclusive "Arcade" game is very fun as well.
Loved that game, one of my favorites on n64
This was the best bomberman multiplayer game honestly
Was thinking about picking this up but after this review I may look out for the sequels instead.
Steven hay all 4 on n64 are fun, just each is very different in terms of content
My favorite way to play bomberman multiplayer
its a great multiplayer experience still to this day
@@n64glennplant untill looking up some videos on bomber list. I didn't know so many bomberman purists don't like it or haven't given it a chance.
I didn't pick this game up because I was listening to the reviews that called the game average or not good but you know what I wish I didn't listen to the reviews because I love these quirky light hearted games.
These were around a lot in those days but games feel a whole lot more serious these days
***** yeah this is easy at first glance but when you play it then there is a lot of depth, just not much content aside from the multiplayer
God i didnt think this game was easy at all when i was a kid. to be fair i was a kid. I find it crazy though how well memories of this game stick with me all these years later though.
This game is awesome me and my kids still play it.
I really hate the instant deaths and great difficulty in getting fall the gold cards I never get past World 1 because of this.
Great stuff Glenn cant beat a bit of bomberman!!
TootyUk not the best one on the console but the start of a good set of bomberman games for the n64
Why didn't you make a review of Bomberman Hero? I like your reviews! btw.
Will you do The Second Attack and Hero next?
Glenn Plant, just do Mario Golf already! I've been waiting what feels like forever for you do cover this game. PLEASE tell me that you'll cover it (and possibly the other 2 Mario Party games) some time this month. :(
Skyler744 i will do it but haven't even started recording any of them yet so may be 2015 until they are done
I am sad now. :( On a more related note, of the 2 Bomberman games I own for the 64, I prefer Bomberman Hero just because you actually have a health bar in that one as opposed to dieing from basically 1 bomb blast in B64.
i like the other 3 bomberman n64 games, they are all fun in their own different ways
My go to N64 platform puzzle game is Lode Runner 3D
Normally I keep all my purchases on all consoles. However I remember selling on Bomberman 64 and South Park for the N64, just didnt get on with them.
BrooksterMax i always used to trade in as soon as i was bored but this game i borrowed from a friend for a week when i was younger
never played it i get mixed up with which n64 bombermans are good and which people dislike, i thought this usually gets criticized but it looks pretty fun and abit diffrent form the norm
Ollie Martin the 4 bomberman games on n64 are all fun but in different ways
I ‘Glenn plant’ myself when I wanna add to my collection and seek out a recommendation
So I watched this video
And being a fan of the megabomberman on the megadrive I figured despite some of the negatives it looks pretty darn fun
So the day before heading into Romford to seek in my retro shop of choice I realised as I was playing through body harvest that there..in my box of about 50 n64 titles was this very game
I remembered then that I’d borrowed it in year 8 (so 98 lol) along with Mario kart 64 and it fell by the wayside and the guy who lent me it obviously had no love for it
RESULT
Haha that’s an awesome
Story so random
I remember enjoying this game and playing it at a friends house 🏠 but I don't remember why I enjoyed it.🤣
I had 'beaten' the game for like a month then a new kid showed up at school we got along quite well and found out he liked Bomberman as well so during recess we would pretend we were Bombermen. Wasn't til a few days later he found out I didn't even know about the Rainbow Palace he then told me how to access it. Boy did that become annoying since I don't know all the tricks you apparently know like that jump bomb stun.
Now for my question when are you going to do Bomberman Hero or Bomberman The Second Attack?
i will...but longer games to record :)
I got this one a couple of years back at a yard sale for $3US, and I played the Single player game, and while it's alright, it's nothing special for me, but it does give me, my g/f, and her daughter another decent multiplayer game for the system, so that's a good thing. :-)
Commodorefan64 yeah i think you either like this game as a multiplayer or solo game, it won't please everyone
***** I'm not saying it's a bad game by any means, but when I think of a Bomberman game, I think of the old school top down Bomberman games.
he to me as a kid was a spy reminds me of 007 but in the most fun and funny ways it and it was like those big gun games but ok for kids
whoa that technique at 4:00!! is that something you have to do in the game or was the some sort of shortcut?
***** blowing yourself up to reach ledges etc is something you need to learn in the game, its not necessary but can save you a whole ton of time when you get good at it
Wow this is still helpful
I think you're kinda understating what a pain the gold cards can be to find, especially the ones available during boss fights.
they are tough but more of a rewarding tough than frustrating I think. it depends on how much of a completionist the player is
I loved this game but i sucked hard on it i wasn abel to finish the first level in the magma/lava levels
I feel your pain.
so I'm years late but I hear what you say and while I don't think you're wrong I think you are missing a point.
Ordered a mint cart with the manual for 20 bucks.
There are two _Bomberman 64's_ and about a hundred _Super Bombermen..._
and that's a problem.
you review some strange titles. I've played a lot of them, but i think i was a bit young to fully enjoy them. I.E. shadowman, forsaken, etc.
Pimpalicious1987 ah man the other 4 bomberman games on n64 are awesome ill try to show them soon
I was all about finding the different kinds of armors ! that big ? question mark ? always got me thinking what it could be and that I had to have it :) then play with matching skins in multiplayer. I'm still trying to get them all :/
code470926 its still a game which challenges which is always cool after all this time
Was excited to hear this game was coming out and bought it upon release.
At least Bomberman's voice in the English version was better, even though it made Bomberman sound like a Powerpuff Girl.
Esse foi uns dos primeiros jogos que tive no n64, o jogo é muito bom, eu achava tão lindo os gráficos, amava jogar com meu irmão.
