In the full size world, a 'pontoon' is usually a non-aquadynamic floating device found on helicopters, while a 'float' will plane on water, which is what fixed wing craft need. So what you have there will be floats, not pontoons. But there have been ultralights using pontoons instead of floats, that will work if your takeoff speed is low enough. Have fun!
8:47... Is it just me or is your Left Float Rudder facing the wrong way around ? That way around the rudder will force the Servo as soon as it deflects left or right my the additional force of the water. I've never seen a boat rudder facing forward...😉
It is funny but some people (usually old timers) think the same which is why I wrote on screen in the video that you can position the rudder as you wish. The answer is… It makes no difference as you get the same result in steering.
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 Only difference would be if you snag something with it facing forward. That might tend to grab harder putting more stress on the servo, rather than glance off with the rudder trailing.
Thanks for the review Steve, I've been looking at this plane for a bit as a beginner. Now I just need to write that dam test to fly in Canada since it's over 250 grams :) lol
I believe I was the first Canadian to write the test so very long ago. Since that time, others have posted all the answers online which means anyone who writes it now, can just GOGGLE each question and receive the answer.
The 1st CD video I watched was the review of the original Ranger, this was before I had any RC stuff, so probably about 1 year ago. I'd always looked at RC planes probably starting in the 1980's but I'd never bought anything because either I didn't have the money, or other circumstances. I'd been watching a lot of RC channels on YT, and when I saw your review of the Ranger I thought that's the one for me. Thing is I didn't get it, mainly cuz we live in a cramped flat and I don't have a car. So long story short I got in to helis instead, and drones if the drone I order from Banggood ever gets here. Although I didn't get the Ranger I have bought other models that Steve reviewed.
I had version one and couldn’t get it off the ground but I liked the plane and beens I had bad luck with version 1 but I got v2 so hopefully when I main it it flies
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 it almost seemed like it wasn’t making enough power. I should’ve changed the esc in hind sight. V1 is boxed back up and in the closet. I’ll try v2 in the spring.
What is the range and max height on something like this with this in the RTF config? Kinda wish this was covered too, as opposed to just 30ft height small left turns the entire video.
Your question is what we call a “ROOKIE QUESTION”. What I mean is that if you ask anyone who flies a Drone, Helicopter or Plane, there will always be someone new to the world of RC that asks, how far does it fly, how high does it fly, how fast can it go, how much does it cost. But, I’ll give you the answer which is the same answer everyone in the RC hobby will give you. You can fly any plane as far as you can still see it, so that means horizontal and vertical. You’d be surprised that you’ll never fly far because once a plane gets at a distance you immediately lose orientation and you can no longer tell if it is turning, going away from you, or coming towards you.
Oof - I was trying to decide between the Ranger or the PA-18 Super Cub 1300mm as my first real plane (currently flying a Volantex Ranger 600) and had decided on the Super Cub, but seeing this version 2 of the Ranger has me thinking about it all over again lol. Ultimately I think the Super Cub is better for me as I have more placs to fly that would be grass takeoffs and landings, but this is one sweet aircraft for sure. Terrific, thorough and entertaining review as always, Cap'n!! Happy flying, and all the best to you and the family for the holidays!
Steve, great video and love flying in snow. Did I miss the large battery mAh that you said gives lots of flight time? I flew my old one on 2200mAh and would get 15+ min in warm weather. Now I've got the v2 as the old one flew away. 😢
@@Stirling_RC_Videos The LARGE battery I spoke of was a GENSACE 3000 mah 3s (it barely fits… had to remove a bit of foam). Also I did fly the plane on a 2200 mAh 4s lipo with no problems, but cut that part out of the video because people who live in HOT climates would probably damage the motor if flow on a 4s at Full Throttle for extended periods.
Great video Steve might pick it up "for the kids" (they won't be using it I will) can I just ask what agency did you get your editor from I have been noticing in all your videos the edits are so tidy
V2… notice how it goes together, notice that REFLEX V3 is in the plane, notice color. In the past there were only TWO RANGERS… A small one in the color yellow and a large one in the color green. I had reviewed both on this UA-cam channel. If you go back and watch those videos then you’ll see even more differences.
I never ordered pontoons for my carbon cub lake Huron way wavy. And to cold to fly in winter. Even my brother won't fly in winter lol and he is hard core flyer.. Question. Do you still have the 1300 mm carbon cub?
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 wow! I live in Florida 18 years now, from Massachusetts for 55 years, moved in 2006! Just can’t do cold anymore, but it’s so hot in Florida from April to October, you almost can’t breath! Thanks for all you do Steve, your videos are great! Merry Christmas

A question Steve. Are the pontoons used on these FMS planes generic? Specifically - will the pontoons from our SuperEZ v4 fit this without any extra parts needed?
Yes, but a total beginner would probably research on what an AILERON, RUDDER, ELEVATOR is and how these cause a plane to turn. I say this because I have seen total newbies (classified as IDIOTS) who fly a plane having no understanding of what moving the joysticks causes the plane to do. They always crash, but often they crash into their spouse or a car. Flying a plane is super easy, but you have to train your brain because you stare at the plane while you fly and you NEVER look down at your joysticks.
@CAPTAINDRONE798 I haven't flown an rc plane before but I khow all the control surfaces and what aleron and elavater do so would you recommend this to me
@@Brudwearingbucket Yes, most definitely. Just fly it for the first time in a big field and use the RIGHT JOYSTICK to turn in flight, but don’t turn too sharp in your turns as a beginner or else the nose could drop and as a beginner you may not react correctly. Other than that, it is simple to fly.
Are reflex and giro the same thing, on FMS stuff I mean, looking on FMS website it has PNP (with reflex) RTF (with giro), do you know if they both have GPS?

The term PONTOONS and FLOATS are interchangeable in the RC Hobby when it comes to planes. For this reason I used both terms in the vid.
Your videos are great captain. Always look forward to seeing what you have for us next.

One minor correction. You can crash with a gyro if you install it backward.
I've heard...
We usually learn to do a proper pre-flight check of the gyro correction AND stick directions - after the first crash! 😉😊

The fur on the face begins in November and goes for several months over the cold winter.
Will it make the best beginners better?
Usually RTF kits are rare in this size of plane with a GYRO & Floats. So, for the beginner this is pretty good.
They already sold out of pontoon version. :(
They are popular. Did you click on each color of plane & then each option (sometimes you may find one).
Yep. Seems all sold out. I'll check again in a while. If I remember. Lol

I agree in general but they work. The Tx would be much better if it had a throttle cut. Safety!
