History of MeTV's Underrated Animation Blocks

- This is something I've wanted to talk about for quite some time, MeTV's animation blocks! Here, I explain the history of MeTV's representation of the animation medium, as it is a channel dedicated to airing classic television series, specials, and sometimes movies from the 50's all the way through the 90's! MeTV has aired all types of programs, ranging from sitcoms to drama.
It was a matter of time before MeTV expanded their lineup to feature classic cartoons, starting with The Flintstones in 2019! More animated shows were added, such as Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Popeye, and The Jetsons when the network expanded its animation catalog in 2021 and went on to be one of the most successful aspects of the network.
Some secondary topics are discussed here, such as the lack of cartoons (other than PBS/FOX Sundays) on antenna TV, The FCC's outdated E/I content regulations for broadcast TV, and a bonus at the end of my picks for what MeTV should air next. But for real, MeTV should capitalize on this and start a new spin-off channel dedicated to cartoons 24 hours a day.

Rumor has it that any city with a regular METV affiliate will automatically get the new channel. Hopefully it's true.

Litton got bought out by Hearst, whose King Features Syndicate was once a media giant when its comic strips ranging from Blondie to Popeye helped sell papers. The Hearts name lives on as they still own a handful of TV stations, but the newspaper end continues a march to oblivion. Sadly, very few of their comic strips have ever been adapted into cartoons, with Popeye being the most successful.
I wish Lifton neve existed I hoping MeTV launch a 24 channel just for Toons from 50s to 90s and some days 2000s hopefully play shows like underrated like Heathcliff to really popular like Animaniacs
However if they have to mix preschool stuff play the classic stuff like Sesame Street Zoobile Zoo and Some old 80s 90s show that played on Nick Jr like Elerka’s Castle
Thanks for making this. I find it surprising and kind of sad that MeTV cares more about Warner Brothers cartoons than Warner Brothers does. I agree that I think the Saturday morning block is too short and don't understand why it ends at 10 in the morning when many years ago they ended significantly later. I'd like to see MeTV add more Hanna-Barbera shows to their lineup like Yogi Bear and Huckleberry Hound
For those viewers who are lucky, the closer to the U.S.-Mexico they live, the more likely they are to get Televisa's Canal 5 and Azteca 7, two major Mexican TV stations that devote much of their daytime hours to kids' TV, airing programming licensed from Nickelodeon, Warner and Disney alongside some original Mexican cartoons, with English-language secondary audio for the Spanish dubbed Nickelodeon, Warner and Disney cartoons, so that English-speaking viewers can watch the cartoons in their original language with the touch of the SAP audio button on their remote...

Don't forget anime. Televisa's Canal 5 and TV Azteca's Azteca 7 was where many of us got our first taste of anime like DragonBall (original, Z and GT), Sailor Moon, Candy Candy, Captain Tsubasa, Ranma 1/2, Pokémon, Saint Seiya, and the list goes on and on.

Comcast isn't going to like this. What predictions do you all think Comcast will attempt to destroy the new 24/7 MeTvtoons OTA channel?
I don't know, but Comcast is heinous for being anti-animation. Let's take a look at their track record:
- In 2010, they stopped carrying Boomerang in New England states
- In March 2016, they stopped carrying Boomerang everywhere else
- In February 2021, they moved Cartoon Network + Adult Swim to the more expensive premium tier so people with basic cable couldn't watch it.
I Wish They Could Put On Super friends, Hong Kong phooey, goober and the Ghost chasers clue club emergency plus one Star Trek the animated series speed buggy Jana of the jungle Tarzan by filmmation Josie and the pussycats The archies space Ghost The herculoids The secret of Isis and Shazam. Last but not least speed racer.
I'm also questioning why they didn't include Hong Kong Phooey, it's one of the more iconic shows from HB rather than Secret Squirrel (but I like both)
This wasn't they're 1st efforts to have animated content they once had the television Mr Magoo series output Gumby She-Ra and Heman.
I wonder what other classics from other companies could MeTV air soon.

Will Danger Mouse and Count Duckula make their way to METV Toons in the US, despite that they are both UK TV shows? Count Duckula Seasons 2&3 never aired the US on Nickelodeon, but season 1 did.

What I Love about Toon In. With Me and Saturday Morning Cartoons on MeTv is the Looney Tunes
They are not very respected by the other networks but people who know their stuff knew how big this was and why the fact it only a matter of time till the block got a spinoff channel. I am so glad this was a success! Great video!
MeTV has more respect for their licensed shows than any network ever did such as ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, The CW, MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, TNT, TBS, and USA.

Personally, I think MeTV might be the start of the second Saturday Morning Renaissance since what they air on Saturdays and weekdays are non educational. And I also think that if MeTV is still around in the next 10-20 years, they should update their programming and air shows and cartoons from the 1980's-2010's. And I also like the idea of a 24/7 Me Toons network, they just need more shows. And if those FCC CTA rules are really outdated, the FCC should get rid of them, thus making other networks like the Big Four + The CW bring boosten the Renaissance!!
I agree with you, the FCC mandate is really outdated (and was a violation of freedom of speech) and doesn't fit today's standards and norms. Most children in the 2020's don't watch broadcast networks like ABC or GRIT for entertainment and rather just watch some garbage Cocomelon or GoAnimate video on their iPad. Not just that, school exists for a reason and PBS Kids is always an option if a parent wants their child to watch something educational.
For whatever reason, animation representation on broadcast (antenna) TV is pretty much non-existent outside of PBS Kids, FOX (mind you, only on Sunday nights), and syndication on The CW at like 2 AM. So MeTV should carry the torch dropped by Qubo when it shut down in 2021 and introduce a new free-to-air network that airs exclusively animation 24 hours a day!

@@ArtieRaccoonReviewsyou see, I was getting tired of cartoon network during 2019 and want to boomerang which was airing the Flintstones all night then when I got done recording the episode DVR I found a channel that said METV and it had the Flintstones on it so I had to watch and after they started Looney tunes an Tom and Jerry The Brady bunch in which Twilight zone I had to tune in on new episode I woke up every Saturday morning had cinnamon rolls and kicked off watching the Flintstones.
Then when they require the Woody woodpecker show Me-TV stopped airing on my TV. So that sucks, how do you get it ruined again?

The e/I law of 2004 needs to be repealed. Its at a point it screws up shows at times. How did save by the bell get e/I as it never was when it aired in the late 80s early 90s. The e/I block today even goofed up pbs.
I agree with you there, society standards and norms have changed over the years. Not only that, educational content can be viewed anytime on PBS or better yet, online. No reason to make other networks suffer for it.

My only downside with it is that it's not HD in my area unless i get Frndly TV, fortunately my TV has frame rate matching so it smooths out like at the movie theater. (not to be confused with the TruMotion effect).

When MeTV reintroduced the classics in these new blocks, it felt like your choldhood was back once again. No doubt they'll do a spinofff channel of classic animated shows if the fans and business want it.
Weigel Broadcasting is basically the anti-WBD and is actually thoughtful and cares about their shows and viewerbase
Especially the businesses - if they weren't so greedy and money -hungry and let the people enjoy the product they could, ultimately, enjoy the financial benefits that would come from this

I sort of predicted MeTV Toons
What I think MeTV needs to do is have a fantastic world of Hannah Barbera show. This would be a collection of the classic of Barbera shorts. I came too many of the other cartoon programming What I Mean is things from shows like quick draw yogi bear. Rough and ready huckleberry hound. And many more.
Kind of like USA Network's Cartoon Express from the 80's

Scooby Doo
It's strange to me. Cartoon Network used to run all these, in fact, Turner Networks used to own the entire Hanna-Barbera catalog and then some reason stopped running the good stuff. For years, well over a full decade, they made bank off of shows like Voltron, Robotech, Jonny Quest, Speed Racer, in fact, most of what METV Toons plans to run now. Then, over time, they fell to the trap of just rerunning the same tired old Teen Titans Go episode over, and over, and over again. Now they're a failing channel. I just hope METV Toons doesn't fall into that same trap. Just buy up catalogs,, run stuff, rotate out shows as needed to keep the line-up fresh. They're running Speed Racer and Marine Boy, so there's hope for a Japanese anime block on there, and a willingness to run shows from the late 1950s to the early 2000s-era. Between both the western and Japanese catalogs, there is a lot of stuff out there that can be gotten onto the channel.
It would be awesome if they managed to pull some strings so they could air Pokemon and Doraemon
Cartoon Network could've run the animated Shazam series from 1981, produced by Filmation with D.C. Comics and aired on NBC SatAM!!!
I would definitely appreciate if MeTV had a spinoff channel that aired cartoons 24/7, since their current blocks are just too early in the morning for me on most days. While they're at it, I would really love to see some classic anime shows added to that 24/7 cartoon channel, such as Speed Racer, Astro Boy, Voltron, and Sherlock Hound.

MeTV should pick up the Pokemon anime (especially Horizons) and air it every Friday nights at 8/7c

Pokémon is a great anime, but it would be out of place on MeTV since its too recent to be considered a classic cartoon. They should however air it on The CW
I remember I discovered this channel back in 2022 on a random Saturday morning, I would just flippin channels & saw Tom and Jerry, so I clicked on it & I was instantly hooked.
Like you said, this channel is basically what Boomerang used to be With the airing of classic show but what makes me like this more is unlike Boomerang, who just plays the same shows over and over again. This show actually airs EVERYTHING, from WB, Hannah-Barbara, MGM even Tex Avery, Hell, it's even showing stuff that I never saw even as a kid.
I just really love this channel because it gives you that old feeling of actually being a kid watching Saturday Morning Cartoons & The Toon In With Me stuff is charmingly entertaining. I really hope this channel lasts a long time along with adding more shows like you said

A MeTV Toons charter affiliate has just been announced for Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota:
KSTC-TV 5.6, a subchannel of Hubbard Broadcasting's flagship station and ABC affiliate, KSTP-TV 5 and its independent sister station KSTC-TV 5.2.
Im not sure if they should add these to the consistent lineup due to time but considering they got Woody Woodpecker I feel like it should be said that Universal has a few other cartoon libraries to their name like UPA, Felix The Cat, and I think Casper so...
Also if they have a MeToons channel and have to air educational programming maybe they could do some older educational programming like I know it isnt a cartoon but maybe something like Mr Rogers and if we're willing to go into like the 90's Magic School Bus
MeTV's Saturday Morning Cartoon block has scored astronomical ratings and viewership to the point that CBS allowed its agreement with Litton Industries to expire to begin the process of returning to SatAM animation programming- both ABC and NBC may follow suit as the public continues to pressure the FCC to reform the CTA of 1990. The best way to reform would be the networks airing 2 hrs. of E/I programming a week, while the affiliates air an hour of it, mandated. Prohibition in this kind of programming has caused more problems than solutions, nowadays!!!
Could this mean the grand comeback of Saturday Morning blocks? Also the FCC's guidelines are extremely dated and not relevant to today's society standards and norms. Let's be real, kids aren't watching broadcast television and rather tapping away on their iPads and TikToks. Besides doesn't school exist for a reason? I hope the law changes!

And don’t forget Discovery Family, they ran “Looney Tunes” at 1PM every weekday. They ran vintage WB cartoons that MeTV ran at the time.

@@davidfraher1292, MeTV has already forced CBS' hand- both ABC and NBC may follow suit. Keep in mind, this may also have to do with ownership of animation properties, courtesy of Paramount(CBS), Disney(ABC) and Universal(NBC)- stay tuned!!!

Same, 7 AM on a WEEKDAY is probably ths worst timeslot imaginable. MeTV Plus airs it at the more reasonable time of 10 PM, but my area isn't good enough to have MeTV Plus
Tablo among other tv box is what you need. Be able to record anything and watch it later on.

I'd like to see the Fairly Oddparents added, a fun show today's parents who grew up with it can share with their kids and bond over. I'm sure some already do with Paramount+, but I've long thought FOP deserved a place on over-the-air TV. MeTV should use this modern classic......

It's a shame, since the main reason why cable was introduced in the 60's was for people who had trouble with reception or lived in the countryside/desert too far away from a transmitter.
