- In 1983, Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Thomas "Tom" Highway finagles a transfer back to his old unit, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, Second Marine Division. En route, he meets fellow passenger and aspiring rock musician Corporal "Stitch" Jones, who borrows money from Highway for a meal at a rest stop and then steals his bus ticket, leaving him stranded.
When Highway finally arrives, his new commanding officer, Major Malcolm Powers, seeing him as old-fashioned, assigns him to the Reconnaissance Platoon (part of his assault battalion) which by coincidence includes Jones. The platoon's previous sergeant, awaiting his retirement, had permitted their inactivity, but Highway quickly enacts a rigorous training program. Their desperate plan to intimidate him with resident body builder "Swede" Johanson, just released from the brig, fails after Highway easily overpowers Swede in a fight. Their conditioning provides positive results, and they develop esprit de corps and respect for Highway.
Highway repeatedly clashes with Powers and his assistant, First Platoon Staff Sergeant Webster. They deplore Highway's unorthodox training methods (such as firing an AK-47 over his men's heads to familiarize them with the weapon's distinctive sound). Seeing Highway's platoon as simply a training tool for a supposedly elite First Platoon, Powers proceeds to arrange for First Platoon to beat Highway's men in every field exercise. However, Highway's old comrade-in-arms, Sergeant Major Choozhoo, and his nominal superior officer, the college-educated and well-meaning but awkward and inexperienced First Lieutenant Ring, support him. After learning of his Medal of Honor award during the Korean War, Highway's men gain further respect for him, becoming unified against their perceived common enemy.
Highway attempts adapting his mindset to romance his ex-wife Aggie, a barmaid at a local tavern who is dating the establishment's Marine-hating owner, Roy. He resorts to reading women's magazines to attempt to understand the female mind. Initially resenting their failed marriage, Aggie tentatively reconciles with Highway.
The 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit is then deployed for the invasion of Grenada. After a last-minute briefing on the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2), Highway's platoon mounts their UH-1 Huey and are dropped by helocast into the water before the rest of Powers' Battalion Landing Team. While advancing inland, they come under heavy enemy fire. Highway improvises, ordering Jones to provide cover using a bulldozer so they can advance and destroy an enemy machine gun nest. Their celebration after subsequently rescuing American students from a medical school is short-lived, as Choozhoo discovers that the Cubans are manning a key enemy position that will have to be taken to prevent further incidents. Powers, not wanting Highway to outdo him, orders the recon platoon to advance on the position, but not to attempt any engagement or take the position until First Platoon arrives.
Ring and Highway advance on the position, but come under heavy fire from two armored cars and infantry. The platoon hides inside an abandoned building, but when the Cubans attack, platoon radioman Profile is killed and his radio destroyed, impeding direct communication. Ring proposes making a long-distance call to Camp Lejeune for air support and sends Jones to repair the phone line before borrowing a credit card to complete the call, but enemy fire severs the line as he completes calling in the coordinates for an air-strike. Unsure if the call went through, Highway goes to put out a marker for the air support to locate the position, but is fired upon and knocked unconscious. Assuming that Highway is dead, the platoon exits the building to engage the Cubans, but then the air support arrives and repels the enemy. Ring and a revived Highway then disregard Powers' order, advance upon and take the position, and capture and detain the Cuban soldiers.
Major Powers arrives with Webster, reprimands Ring and threatens Highway with a court-martial. However, the commanding officer of the regiment to which Powers' battalion belongs, Colonel Meyers (a combat veteran who had served in the same battalion as Highway in the Vietnam War), arrives by helicopter and after listening to Powers' and Highway's reports, commends Highway and punishes Powers with transfer back to his former support unit for discouraging the Recon Marines' aggressive fighting spirit.
Highway and his men are warmly received upon returning to the States, with the 1st Marine Division Band playing the official Marine Corps march, Semper Fidelis. Jones informs Highway that he is going to re-enlist and make a career in the Corps, while Highway confides to Jones he is taking mandatory retirement. Aggie is waiting for him in the stands, and the two of them walk off together to start Highway's retirement. - Розваги
This LT may be a bit nerdy, but is actually a good officer. He took advice from his more experienced NCO, led his men from the front, then not knowing what would happen to him, took responsibility.
SNCO
As a Marine NCO in nam, we had an officer like that Major once. Once being the operative word.
@@bradleysanford5105 Gee, I hope the schmuck didn't have a mysterious accident with a grenade rolled into his tent. That would have been "tragic"
@@bradleysanford5105friend of mine served in Nam and they had a Lt that no one liked. LT pulled out a cigarette and everyone leaned away from him and as soon as he lit it, a sniper took him out.

Gunny Highway is one of Clint's most underated movie characters. Heartbreak Ridge is a classic
It's pure cheeseball.
@@paulnejtek6588 cheeseball classic?
His character is good. The movie is hot trash. A Marine force recon unit al acting like 16 year olds taken straight from Juvy. Makes no sense whatsoever. Plus the major never solutes Gunny... while gunny is a medal of honor winner. A big no no.
@@jordanmc9015 Ha! So true.
"A rag-tag crew of grown men who act like 16 year olds taken straight from Juvy!"
That should have been what they said in the preview.
It's fucking terrible let's be honest
How is Clint Eastwood in full camo war-paint the greatest thing I've ever seen??? He has the perfect face for that look.
2000 AD's ABC robot has got to be based on his gurn.
@@cronocide Johnny/Joe Pineapples, the sniper ABC Warrior? (Always thought Simon Bisley's Hammerstein was based on Arnold Schwarzenegger).
It also helps that Clint had an experienced make-up artist take their time in the application, for just that reason! LOL! You're absolutely right! The man always looks fantastic!
Except the big sections at the top of his forehead...... take your helmet off, or it gets knocked off, and you might as well be wrapped in tinfoil.

I love how clint chooses to portray the enlisted man! NCOs are the backbone of the military ❤
In the Movie " Kelly's Heros" Eastwood played a former army Lt, busted down to private..still led the men serious good fortune..

Do you knows this movie is a movie, and not real. It never happened like this and never would. Grow up.😮😊
@@JohnSmith-lp8wt No really I would never have guessed I thought Clint Eastwood was a real Marine.
@@JohnSmith-lp8wtYou're the Debbie Downer child/teen who was thrown out of parties so the good times could roll on.🤣
@@JohnSmith-lp8wt Of course he knows it's a movie but he makes a good point. In so many cases it's the overly-ambitious middle-mangement that cause the problems, not the top brass, and not just in the military but in the business and governmental worlds as well. Also, Gunny Highway's a great example of sometimes you've got to manage UP in addition to managing DOWN. Take it from a former Marine, sure there's liberties taken but I enjoyed this movie!
@@JohnSmith-lp8wtNo friends eh? I wonder why... 🙄
Leadership is never about "being the boss."
Good leaders are natural followers first..just depends if you learned anything on the way up and can think up the correct solution faster than the other followers.
It is a bit like the motivational saying the late Zig Ziglar used to say, "You get everything YOU want out of life, if you help enough OTHER people get what THEY want!".
A proper officer, as is the case with a decent manager/Team Leader, leads from the front, but remains last in line for praise.
When those under your charge, are motivated to such high standards, your efforts will be recognised as a consequence. A win/win/win situation. The people, the leadership, and the 'entity' itself ALL gain the advantage.
Damn right ✅️
Saw this movie on a Marine base on Okinawa, it got loud! LOL
I saw the Rock on Okinawa in '96, that was loud lol.
"I told you to stay in contact and not to take this hill without me!!" Do you want me to give it back?
Yes.
Kinda hard to stay in contact with a big hole through both the radio and Profile.
They might not take it back, thinking it might be a trick and Gunny might subject them to embarassment again. I say keep it! 😁🤘
Clint looks like a boss with that paint on.
But you can see him, right? Bad camo.
Take a GOOD look. In that camo face paint to me he looks like the Grim Reaper himself.
Gotta appreciate Clint's face paint is actually done well. That's why its hard to see him vs the other officers
It helped that he has his infamous squint too
No it isn't. "Dark high, light low."
Cheeks bones, nose, brow, and chin get covered with darker colors while the cheeks and eyes get covered with lighter colors. You also don't apply it splotches of random colors, and use a lot less black. The idea is to break up the patterns of the face, not create new ones. Clint didn't even cover all exposed skin with a base layer.
I was taught how to apply camo paint by Rangers.
@@StudleyDuderight exactly. "Less is more".
Was Clint in this clip? I thought I heard him, but I didn’t see him.
@@StudleyDuderight was gonna say, if he'd done it right, he wouldn't have black around his eyes...that's where the lightest color goes. As former cav, never woulda gotten away with making the shadow areas darker & splotches the face randomly...didn't hide anything with that.
Good, senior NCOs, especially Platoon Sergeants, are the backbone that maintains unit cohesiveness and ensures that the mission is accomplished but balanced with the safety of the troops.
For sure 💯
Sergeants have always run armies, not generals
The russians seem not to have got that message.
@@michaelreifenstein2114 You're right. I heard that only a few thousand Ukrainians have died in the war. Amazing.
I love the look on Websters face when he realized he’d backed the wrong horse.
Washington? You mean Sergeant Webster?
@@treyhelms5282 Thank you. I stand corrected.
@@Sh9168 TY. It was still a great reference you brought up.
it wasn't him backing the wrong horse. the company commander decided his bunch was going to be the premier platoon. Webster was a by the book Marine he did take advantage if his good fortune. Gunney Highway did the same to the Colonel.
The Major forgot the first rule of the Marines. Never f with a Gunny and his crayon.
A neighbor's son was in the Marines from 02 -2010 and we were sending care packages in the biggest plastic storage boxes we could ship to all the kids we knew in Afghanistan and Iraq.
I still kick myself in the ass for not sending more crayons to my neighbor's kid.
We knew he was destined to be a marine when he liked to suck on dry erase markers before he could wipe his own butt.
Truth NEVER!
RAAAAH!
Iirc Gunny Highway was also MoH winner.
man that "crayon" bit is so lame, have to be honest
I love the "with all due respect" expression.
It more than suggest that very little respect is due.
😂😂😂😂 he's green asf
“Well, we sure chewed some of the same dirt, sir.”
An absolute classic! Clint is on fire, in this. Mario Van Peebles' character always cracks me up, too... 😂
Coulda been a badass batman with that voice and tone
Maybe the animated series voice over hell yeah!! but HELL NAW ain’t NO way live action if it meant Clint MF Eastwood wearing tights…
Somehow he never even came close to that level of zest and had to dress up as a mf cowboy for a whole ass 2 decades not to mention the friggin zest fest that was the 60’s & 70’s‼️ 😳
Guy deserves a gd medal for that alone! 🫡
He was going to play a live action old man Bruce in a live action Batman Beyond movie but it got cancelled
Gotta love that this short summarizes US infantry philosophy before the 2000s. The commanders on ground are given relatively high freedoms, which creates a more flexible force and high performance when there's good officers. On the other hand it makes high command less impactful and when there's bad officers it creates chaos and risks.
Amen!!! And my experience from 2004-2009 I WAS ARMY 10th mtn. The Marines don’t play politics I love it! They have their boys backs even if Muther suckers bangs ol boys WIFE! Army Slangs up on a post strips ya down whipps you right to nothing and makes an example out of you!!! BOO!!!! Not saying it’s good to do that. NOT AT ALL!!! Morals are MORALS WE HAVE SUPREE DECORE! That chopper saved him from an ass whipping. Clint was about to give him a taste of some real pain.😅😅
Clint was a life guard in Malibu during the Korean war he wasn't much better than a draft dodger.. Clint liked playing something he could never build up the courage to be, a war hero.
@@mastermonarchif I remember correctly he was in the army and actually short of being sent to the Korean War. However he and several other man have been on a army plain that crashed and he and several other survived the crash. So the army didn't send him to Korea. So well this is at least from his record.

@@leeiron9767 not really
I was an 03 41 from 1980 to 1984 and a lot of what they show in this movie is true regarding officers!
And it doesn't matter what branch.
Same in the Army for me. I never met one officer that you could respect that wasn't some political acting asshole. I once asked one about his Ranger tab and he cut me off mid sentence and said, "if you wanna talk to someone, don't talk to me, use your chain of command". I was going to Ranger selection and was going to ask if he had any advice. But I later found out that captain got his through the leadership course, he never went on to get the long scroll and be the REAL DEAL. But he was an asshole all the same. Most MEN will talk to you and encourage you through motivation and leadership. Most officers don't and think they are above enlisted and the NCOs. In 10 years, I never met one I liked, period.
One of the few LT worth a damn
The one thing any fresh boot second Lt should have, beyond anything else. Is the confidence to go with his senior NCO's gut feeling when the situation is hard to read and simple sollutions are required.
For the most part. However in Platoon Lieutenant Wolf should have followed Elias, and no Staff Sergeant Barnes.
"Now get off my LZ!"
"Semper Fi."
Hoo-rah
One of the most underrated movies of all time.
Clint Eastwood is and always has been a badass!
This is honestly one of my favorite war movies that doesn't have much action.
Nobody would would speak to Medal of Honor like that.
True, but I doubt he would’ve been aware of his having one. He’s that sort of officer.
Praises and compliments from military leaders hit way different
This is the best part of the movie and exemplifies that getting the job done is the priority and not catering to politics or egoes of those “in charge”. This is how the US wins when it fights but loses once politics and other agendas and egoes creep in.
Big difference between being a boss and being bossy. Love this movie!
He was trying to take credit for his work. That why he wants him to wait.
...and it ended up backfiring on Major Powers-Big Time!!! I love it!!!
Actually, he wanted to take the hill HIMSELF and get the credit. That is of course AFTER Highways men had laid all the groundwork and cleared the way.
Yup ...I sad the same thing
Umm..no The young Lieutenant had good NCOs under his command structure and was learning by example.
I was in the Navy on a Amphibious ship when this movie came out.
Accurate representation of the Majors in the Marine Corps at that time
Ever meet someone with a shiny medal around the neck?
Funny how people snap to attention when they see the albatross around the neck.
Meeting living Medal of Honor recipients was one of the greatest moments I had in the military. Truly inspiring.
🫡
Medal of honor and/or the silver star!!! No matter the rank, you stand to and salute!
@joeyr7294 is that a thing? In the British Army, a General would need to salute a Victoria Cross recipient, be they whatever rank or none. Rare though, as I think there's only 1 man in the entire active military with the award. I'd have loved to see any officer salute a Corporal rather than simply return one
@@jamesgornall5731 it's fairly rare in America as well, and I'm not positive it's required. It's basically a thanks for your service through hell. Silver star is not as well noticed, but also means you did some serious sh*t to get you and your unit home. Unfortunately, not always the whole unit. But the recognition is basically that you did more than was really required of your position in said unit and completed the mission/saved your brother's in arms.
@joeyr7294 for me, it was not so rare. Being in the Marine Corps and timing is everything.
I had the opportunity to meet and have conversations and dinners with several medals of honor recipients. And seeing how people dart and dash around those shiny pieces of metal.
As I stated for me it was not unusual for me to meet high ranked officers or medal of Honor recipients.
I believe it is each person's individual experiences that shape a person.
It is an honor to be able to say that I live in the time of Clint Eastwood.

One of the best moments was after the nerdy LT left the Major’s office and a tongue lashing from the Major for disobeying the Major’s order, on the advice of Gunny Highway, Highway was outside the office waiting to get yelled at also, but Gunny gave the LT a “hoorah”.
