The 3d printing community on reddit is soooo far up its own ass. You can ask a simple question and they will call you a moron for not knowing the exact issue with a complicated machine right away.
Yeah, some of the more specialized subs (like r/mechanicalkeyboards) are really out of touch, you ask them a simple beginnner question and they rp like it's fricken stack overflow
Doomerism is rampant on Reddit, and that deserves to be counted as a strong negative when taking into account whether the platform deserves its negative reputation.
By doomers you mean those emo by any other name? I have two feelings about them: 1. "It never happened, and here it is again." 2. "Look how fast did emo die out of fashion in 2007... Oops, yes, it's not Russia"
I’ve tried advocating for it a few years until I realized I started staring into the abyss and promptly deleted the app. The app is great at first until you realize every subreddit eventually becomes a circle jerk. Still redownload time to time for the porn though cus I’m not an idiot
Karma is even worse then mentioned, some subreddits need you to have some minimum karma for you to make any posts. I wanted to post some epic dank maymays I made at some point to some sub but I guess I wasn’t enough of a neck beard to do so. Anyways great vid as always
It’s actually a way to stop bots/trolls/throwaways from posting. Since they are created en masse, they never really have karma and so by demanding a minimum it’s way harder for them to do their thing.
@@darkdragon5520 but why not make it so that only accounts that have existed for x amount of time can post? If a bot needed karma to post can't they just post something random on a subreddit that doesn't require karma and have it upvoted by other bots?
@@Clone-up2ge I will make the argument here that Karma is actually a better system to handle bots/troll accounts from posting while also helping the end user. Let me explain. Requiring someone to be a member of a site for a certain amount of time sounds good on paper, until you realize that doing so just limits what the user can do until they've been on the site long enough. This discourages participation and growth. With Karma, if you make a popular post or comment, or participate enough in communities, you are rewarded for doing so, allowing you to bypass that threshold, and reaching that threshold can take any time from a day to weeks to months, it doesn't have a time limit. I unironically think that Karma has some benefits compared to other systems even if it's heavily abused.

I disagree with the final take that it's not that bad, I would instead say that maybe all of the platforms are just terrible in their own ways. I tried making an account and writing a few posts on there and I learned pretty soon why it has its reputation. Now I only use it to look up an answer to a question I have with a game that I can't find much info for elsewhere and it works well enough for that but I guess if you can stand to be on that site for more than 5 minutes a month then you have me beat
yes, it deserves every stain on it's reputation it's gotten, being better than twitter isn't even the bare minimum and at times reddit is definitely as bad if not worse than twitter atleast twitter mobs are generally less organized the only time I look at the site is when I need quick answers because the comments will corroborate on whether it is good or bad info, if I wanna waste time this site right here is where I go (or I play a game)
A lot of social media is less then stellar but none as irredeemably so as Reddit. The engagement with the upvotes is so bad to the point it discourages or even outright disallows expression that doesn’t align with any given opinion. Should be a case study on the effect of echo chambers.
The system that can stack Internet points seems to have a lot of problems. There is a huge internet community in my country that has that function, and some people post inflammatory, manipulated and provocative posts to get worthless internet points.
It seems fairly neutral as far as places where fandoms gather. People who are obsessive about stuff tend to be socially maladjusted. That's just how it is. Ok the karma thing seems like a recipe of weirdness. It makes it about status. Introduces a capitalism of marketing yourself and appealing to the most people. I see how that leads to obnoxiousness. Then there's sexual weirdness. Sex is just disgusting for some people. That's just how it is. Someone has something weird happen in childhood (maybe the got molested, or exposed to something or got addicted to sex) and now they're stuck with it. Whatever. If the person in question keeps it to themselves it shouldn't be a problem. But don't expose people to it online. Try to adapt or fix it.

Nah as a former Redditor I can tell you that Reddit sucks ass; karma limits make the site impossible to use for new/casual users, the userbase is unintelligent and void of nuance, and different opinions are kicked into the absolute dirt; even a disagreement over something as simple as a video game often devolves into 12 assholes berating someone for saying they aren’t 100 percent on board with [insert harmless opinion slightly different from the community consensus]. Reddit has always been worthless trash. The only time I ever visit Reddit is if I'm using a search engine about a technical issue and a Reddit post pops up. Even at that, the issue is either unsolved or it gives bogus information because people who hang out on Reddit all day are some of the biggest morons on the planet, only 2nd to Tumblr.
Exactly I only use it for that sort of purpose too and I often wind up going through at least 3-5 posts with however many comments before I find something helpful and that's just for questions about games. Their brains are too rotted from constantly huffing the cheeto dust in their unwashed neckbeards to give any decent advice most of the time or if you find something at least halfway decent they say it in a way that is either not very helpful or full of elitism.
