it still boggles my mind why Sega didn't give the Power Base Converter this ability right out of the box. As someone who actually really dislikes the sound that comes out of the Master System/Mark III, The FM Sound Unit is actually a must for me.
That fm soundchip is absolutely mind blowing it makes you even wondering if you are still playing an 8bit system or playing on a 16bit system, it really feels nextgen. That PSG chip really sounds. Lifeless & cold . Apart from the fm soundchip, many games do have decent graphics to mimmick 16bit, so that's 2 pseudo bits of the price of 1.
Sega with their crazy add ons for even the Master System. Pretty cool. A lot of those Master System songs were pretty charming on their own, but still a neat option for those who want something different.
In regards to the obligatory "sega does what nintendon't", Konami's Lagrange Point on the Famicom features a custom variant of the YM2413 in the FM sound unit called the VRC7 and there's third-party hardware that lets you take full advantage of the chip with more than just Lagrange Point.
I honestly never knew SEGA 8-bit games had FM sound capabilities. Growing up, I had a SEGA Master System and the games that utilized the FM sound unit were exclusive to Japan. The SEGA MARK III had an optional FM Sound Unit while the Japanese Master System had the FM Sound Unit integrated. If I could only import a SEGA MARK III and/or a Japanese Master System to add to my collection!
A really cool add-on. For someone who grew up with the Nes, the SMS always seemed like a bit of an oddball with it's better graphics but clearly more lacking sound capabilities. With that thing the SMS feels like an actual more advanced system with two extra years in developement compared to Nintendo's machine.
there is a guy who makes them new and includes a region switch for increased compatibility. they are about $100 shipped IIRC. You can also get an alternative, which is a SMS to Genesis adaptor (also made new) that is able to fit into Genesis 1 and 2, but unlike the original power base convertor it has a BIOS chip to increase compatibility and FM audio chip included

Sounds a lot better IMO. Maybe the Master System would have beat the NES had this been installed by default. The IDE ribbon cable seems a little cheesy, it makes the device look delicate.
I find the FM unit sounds just like the Master System *looks* like it should sound. Visually, it's that step between say the NES and the Mega Drive, but the original sound doesn't match up to that at all. With the FM unit, however, it all comes together.
You're right, the Famicom didn't have a addon for extra sound. They just built their sound expansion chips into the cartridges. ;) **Edit** Unless you count the Famicom disk system, then kind of. :P
Oh, it's simple! (if you understand some electronics ;v) Just a couple oscillators running in different phase shifts going through a feedback loop generates the sounds in these chips. (for YM2151/YM2612/etc. it's 4 operators) It's a lot more in-depth than that of course, this is just a simple explanation.

The sega 3D classics collection for 3ds has a neat master system game in it called maze walker 3D. It'll let you play the game with either the nomal music or it's fm soundtrack. With that game though, i kinda prefer the non-fm soundtrack while most other games seems to have been improved with it 😶
There is also a chip made for the master system that is a reversed engineered FM sound unit. Its made by a team in australia and has a super simple install if you are willing to pay the premium for it.
in addition to that there is the JP master system which had FM built-in and the new manufacture power base mini someday id like to take a stab at modding a YM2413 into a megadrive/genesis

I have to say that I do think it sounds better but I don't like it being in a Master System console, I much prefer the programmable sound generator audio as that is a big part of what defines a Master System, it helps gamers identify the console. FM is Mega Drive, PSG is Master System, this FM unit is like a hybrid of Mega Drive and Master System together. Sometimes when you play Mega Drive games for a long period of time you get sick of them (as anything when we have too much), but it's nice to escape the 16-bit scene for a while by playing Master System games, the tinny audio is sometimes very refreshing to the ears and it's a nice change from the FM-YM2612 and the library of games. This FM sound unit would completely screw one over as there would be nowhere to escape to. Your Master System is now a Mega Drive.

I'm thoroughly impressed with how good the FM sound is for 8 bit era games. It reminds me of many Genesis/Mega Drive games. But for pure nostalgia purposes, the SMS sans FM (as we had it in the US) had a very distinct sound and having the FM enabled just doesn't cut it in that department.

To be fair the 32X was a great adition to the Genesis, but in those 6 months of lifespawn, no one used the real power behind the hardware. The 32X deserves more love and respect for what it is

Now the Sega CD is indeed a really good add-on, albeit one that was tainted by a flood of bad games, but if you dig through the crap you can find some REALLY good hidden gems! If Mark had said "This is like the Sega CD for your Mark III" not only would it have made more sense, because the CD add-on allows the Genesis to play CD quality audio, which is an audio-enhancement similar to what the FM is to the Mark III, but it wouldn't have come off as an insult to people who don't like the 32X (e.g. Most people)
Michirin9801 I understand your point and I agree with it, but to me despite the 32X being a failure due to the low lifespawn (if that thing lived longer the history would be diferent) it has some relation with the FM Module. For example the module itself just gave FM music to some games, the 32X did the same. Both could be described as (an optional bonus just for the "yolo"). The Sega CD on the other hand, just for the concept of CD Quality and the capability to play CD's on the system, the huge amount of storage space and the fact that in that time CD's where the shit, is a MUST BUY if it's presented in the gaming market. This is just my opinion, my biased (maybe) point of view, but I feel that both FM Module and 32X are "optional" and not a "must have". The standart game in the Master System will play with or without the FM Module and the standart Genesis games will run with or without the 32X, but both add-ons gave something to those games, one gave music, the other gave video quality. Totally not. I still love to play my old Neo.Geo CD with my best friend, and the CD games sounds are different from the arcade, or the original NG AES; the *real* nostalgia. But I'll still enjoy my improved music and sound effects that come with the game being on CD. Or with Super Street Fighter 2 turbo on the 3DO, usually we would play this game on a SNES but the musics are remastered and the sound effects are much better, sounds like the original cps2 SSF2T came out for... Don't let nostalgia get in the way of better sound man, that's why people thing us collectors are crazy cat ladies in the making ^^ If it's better, and a nice piece for Sega collectors, and you can actually use it to boost your games, it's not some useless item that will stay in its box ^^ Sorry for the rant, but I love this sound unit, going back to normal musics after using it for a while (a friend lent it to me) is pretty sobering..
i think the new systems should bring back cardboard boxes.....why put them in those plastic cases when u can have amazing boxes? i miss buying a nes game in a box with so many sheets and papers inside, those were fun days...
Rami Merehbi as cool as they can be they are extremely easy to destroy and some people just see cardboard boxes as disposable packaging and toss them. It's easy to find cartridge only games and jewel case only pc games but never easy to get boxed titles.

This is the only way to play these games. This should have worked with all games and come standard with the Master System. That would have changed everything. Of course, they shouldn't have redesigned either the Nintendo OR the Mark III either, among other things. Regardless, with this sound the adult arcade seriousness would have really come through giving the true Sega character instead of that lackluster thing we got. (when compared to the best games from NES) The NES sound was warmer and charming, but Sega was never "charming" anyway. With this the MS could be what it should be: POWERFUL. That's what Sega was to me, serious equipment for arcade enthusiasts. Part two may have been a great game (I eventually had to admit) but when they went the cartoon route with Sonic it nearly killed it for me. This was the only Sonic they really needed.
It means FM synthesis, a then popular form of digital audio synthesis by Yamaha. It found widespread use in the majority arcade machines from the mid 80's to early 90's. It even found it's way into consoles such as the Genesis and PC cards like the first Soundblaster.
They're both use FM synthesis, other than that that they're completely different. The YM2143 in the FM Unit is much more limited, the instrument set is hard-coded and cannot be altered. The YM2612 chip in the Mega Drive/Genesis is more sophisticated, with user definable instruments. That's why all the FM Mark III use the same instruments but Genesis/Mega Drive games have more variation.

Eh, I don't like it. Part of what defines these old consoles is their sound. And a Master System should sound like a Master System, not a Genesis :P Could you imagine playing Super Mario Bros. with FM sound? Would completely kill the nostalgia.
Totally not. I still love to play my old Neo.Geo CD with my best friend, and the CD games sounds are different from the arcade, or the original NG AES; the *real* nostalgia. But I'll still enjoy my improved music and sound effects that come with the game being on CD.
Or with Super Street Fighter 2 turbo on the 3DO, usually we would play this game on a SNES but the musics are remastered and the sound effects are much better, sounds like the original cps2 SSF2T came out for...
Don't let nostalgia get in the way of better sound man, that's why people thing us collectors are crazy cat ladies in the making ^^ If it's better, and a nice piece for Sega collectors, and you can actually use it to boost your games, it's not some useless item that will stay in its box ^^
Sorry for the rant, but I love this sound unit, going back to normal musics after using it for a while (a friend lent it to me) is pretty sobering..

Well, it doesn't sound quite as capable as a Genesis, but it's still very much FM, and sounds nothing like a Master System.

i think the new systems should bring back cardboard boxes.....why put them in those plastic cases when u can have amazing boxes? i miss buying a nes game in a box with so many sheets and papers inside, those were fun days...
Rami Merehbi as cool as they can be they are extremely easy to destroy and some people just see cardboard boxes as disposable packaging and toss them.
It's easy to find cartridge only games and jewel case only pc games but never easy to get boxed titles.

This is the only way to play these games. This should have worked with all games and come standard with the Master System. That would have changed everything. Of course, they shouldn't have redesigned either the Nintendo OR the Mark III either, among other things. Regardless, with this sound the adult arcade seriousness would have really come through giving the true Sega character instead of that lackluster thing we got. (when compared to the best games from NES) The NES sound was warmer and charming, but Sega was never "charming" anyway. With this the MS could be what it should be: POWERFUL. That's what Sega was to me, serious equipment for arcade enthusiasts. Part two may have been a great game (I eventually had to admit) but when they went the cartoon route with Sonic it nearly killed it for me. This was the only Sonic they really needed.

It means FM synthesis, a then popular form of digital audio synthesis by Yamaha. It found widespread use in the majority arcade machines from the mid 80's to early 90's. It even found it's way into consoles such as the Genesis and PC cards like the first Soundblaster.

They're both use FM synthesis, other than that that they're completely different. The YM2143 in the FM Unit is much more limited, the instrument set is hard-coded and cannot be altered. The YM2612 chip in the Mega Drive/Genesis is more sophisticated, with user definable instruments.
That's why all the FM Mark III use the same instruments but Genesis/Mega Drive games have more variation.
